I watched The Last of the Mohicans (1992)last night for the first time in years. If you haven't watched it lately it's an awesome movie. I'm not just saying that because it was filmed in the mountains near Asheville, NC either.

I was struck by how the last 10 minutes of the movie was very much like Serenity. There is hardly any dialogue, just swelling music but a lot happens after the British have been defeated by the French at Fort William Henry.

Hawkeye shoots and kills Major Hayward as he is about to be roasted alive, after Hayward sacrifices himself in order to save Hawkeye, Cora Munroe and her sister, Alice.

Uncas battles on the edge of a cliff with Magua (a lot like the Operative I think) in order to try to save Alice who is being held prisoner by Magua (the nasty Huron that is determined to kill the children of his enemy,Col Munroe, who is Cora and Alice's father) and Uncas is killed by Magua.

Facing death or something worse, Alice then commits suicide by falling over the cliff.

Uncas father,Chingachgook, exacts a father's revenge with the butt of a rifle and kills Magua.

A lot in 10 minutes, but what really clinched the similarity to Serenity for me was the last bit of dialogue that Chingachgook says to Hawkeye.

He essentially tells Hawkyeye that soon there will be no more Mohicans left when he dies and that the frontier is getting smaller and will eventually cease to be. Then there won't even be a place for Hawkeye and Cora, or anyone who belings on the frontier.

Doesn't that sound like Mal and his remark that the Alliance is moving outward and soon there wouldn't be a place for naughty men like him?

This is only the last 10 minutes and there are lots more things that reminded me of Serenity. Hawkeye's charater especially remines me more than a bit of Mal without most of the bitterness. He does the right thing, not necessarily the "correct" thing in many instanes and that puts him at odds with the "civilized" world.

I know Joss was influenced by The Killer Angels but it looks like he was influenced by James Fenimore Cooper too.

One day.
One plan.
One army of Browncoats.

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.
