It turns out Gandalf isn't dead, but he's all Gray. Strider turns out to be the long lost King with magical healing properties. He fights all kinds of epic battles, but it's just a feint to give Frodo a chance to sneak to Mount Doom and destroy the One Ring. However, Frodo gets seduced by the Ring at the last moment. Fortunately, Gollum is still obsessed with the Ring, follows Frodo to Mount Doom, grabs the Ring, and falls into the pit, destroying Sauron's power. The Dark One Lose's even the ability to assume concrete form, and that brings the Age (third? fourth?) to an end. All the magical power of the Elves was tied up with the Ring, and besides they're weary of mortal realms. so they all bug out for the Undying Lands. Frodo, who never really recovers from bearing the Ring, goes with them, but not before a final struggle with Saruman, who's set himself up as dictator of The Shire. No explanation of what happened to the Hobbits -- I think they all moved to Florida. Strider marries Arwen and they live happily for a couple of centuries. But though he's long-lived, he isn't immortal, and he eventually dies, leaving Arwen stuck in Middle Earth with no way to get to the Undying Lands. Not really a happy ending, if you think about it.

There, now I've saved you $20.

It interesting. Tokien always denied that the trilogy was political or historical, but the whole thing bears a certain resemblance to the all the hassles in Europe between 1935 and 1955. Sauron is obviously Hitler. Saruman isn't any one person -- he's Socialism, officially against the forces off darkness, but always playing with those forces for his own benefit.

In particular, the "Scouring of the Shire" bears an uncomfortable resemblance to the political struggle in Britain after the war, right down to the political slogans.

Sorry, I'm getting too serious, aren't I?
