I'm travling right now and I'm here in Nevada visiting a friend...

My friend, Shawn, said, "You seen the new equipment for the diggers?"

He's referring to the heavy machinery for the mining around here... I love labor so I know some things...

so I said.. "Yeah, looks great."

To fuck with me, he told me, "Whatever, you wouldn't know."

And out of reflex, I responded, "Chu ni duh!" which means 'screw you' in Mandarin.

A lot like Firefly... does anyone here just express yourself in other languages like they do in the 'verse?

Can't say as I spout much Mandarin, though I do now and then come out with a few choice 'ta ma de' or 'hundan' from the show, which my fiance hates.

I've found, though, that I've picked up a lot of the dialect.

The letter 'g' has almost entirely disappeared from my vocabulary. And I like the word ruttin'. And shiny. Everything is shiny. Unless it ain't. I say 'ain't' a lot, too.

Apostrophes and contractions dot my conversations everywhere, as well.

'S'not really good conversation, but it's lots of ruttin' fun. And ain't no one gonna tell me otherwise. 'Cause it's all shiny.

I hear 'shiny' all the time here. And I understand it. Shiny is like the most popular Firefly related word...
..but whats it from? I dont remember hearing it anywhere in the episodes.

you just think you didn't hear it...

watch again, and look for it... its all over the place...

first place i can remember is right after the scavenging on in Serenity (the epipsode) Wash says after they come in the cargo bay
"We look shiny, Captain. They are not
repeat not coming about."
and remember this(same ep.)
KAYLEE
No, it's shiny! I like to meet new
people. They've all got stories...

JAYNE
Captain, can you please stop her from
being cheerful?

MAL
I don't believe there is a power in
the 'verse that can stop Kaylee from
being cheerful.

and thats just the beginnning of the first epipsode!

I'm taking a course right now: the honours project. It's independant study for 4th year students.

Basically, it translates to, here's a project to fustrate you and cause you much pain. Also, it is expected that some sort of paper is produced in the end to prove that work was done and the topic was "understood."

Of course, I regularly have problems that I can't resolve myself and that's what the supervisor is for.

One time, the solution was was just so gorram easy: just couldn't see the pattern. It went from pages of what I've tried, to two lines.

"Go-se! Why didn't I see that!" says I.

Don't know if he understood, but I think I'm going to have to re-adjust the brain filter a bit

And I also use shiny, and the general style of language, to the extent that the wife has said something. Tee hee. I've toned it down, but just can't seem to stop entirely. Oh well

I say dong ma so much that my 6 year old understands it.
'You can't go to church in a power rangers costume, dong ma?'
I am trying very, very hard to keep my grammar clean, writing fic like a goramn fic machine isn't helping any. So far, my speech is ok, but my inner voice is pure Jayne. It's bound to start slipping out any day now.

I've been using bits and pieces of other languages, in addition to US western- and southernisms, for so long that adding things from Firefly didn't even get noticed. The Chinese one I find myself using the most is "ai ya." Anytime the kids do something (spill their milk AGAIN, race to the car and crash into each other and get hurt, you name it) or I do something (loose my keys AGAIN) out pops "ai ya." I've used easy peesy a lot, but many of the other things I would have added I've already been using since I was a kid. I've actually been wondering if Joss' people (family type) come from the same kinds of places my people came from. Hmmmm.

SERENYTY

I've caught myself. I quote Firefly (whenever something is said about either 'blue' or 'hands' I say "two by two, hands of blue).

I say Gorram, and shiny a lot too.

I say "mind your own business" (can't spell it) in Chinese all the time. I say Ta me duh, and here's the thing that always baffles everyone: Wuh Duh Mah huh tah duh fung-kwong duh wai-shung doh. It's from Our Mrs. Reynolds, and it's the ever-popular "Holy mother of God, and all her wacky nephews."

I've said "Ai Ya." A lot, too.

my grammar is so bad since i started watching firefly. For Instance, if someone asks me to do something, i would say-
"I ain't gunna do it jus' cuz you wan' me to"
as opposed to just sayin "no"
I also get the occasional "tamade hundan" slip out when referring to guys in my class, plus "piece of fei-oo" and of course, the essential "Shiny", "Gorramm" and "Ruttin'".

I wish I spoke like that more, but I don't wanna force it. I also do that "two by two, hands of blue" whenever someone says 'two by two' or 'blue hands' or anything even remotely related. I have friends who actually speak Chinese so I always feel a bit funny quoting it from firefly 'cos I just know my pronounciation is really bad. I find it embarrasing when they have NO IDEA what I'm trying to say.

I work my ass off at work. In fact, I did her job that night by doing the dishes last night, just because. To show her appriciation, she said, "This pot isn't clean yet!"

I replied, "Chu ni duh, tchen wah!" (in English pronounciation... by the way, that means "Screw you, slut!")

She said, "What?" I just rolled my eyes.

Ah haha

My inner voice has become an odd combination of Mal and Wash: sarcasism with a twang. I don't think I actually sound like that out loud yet, but it might just be that I don't hear it, lol. I have caught myself using some of the chinese a lot, but since I haven't manged to memorize any of the longer phrases, it's mostly the basic stuff. I was actually considering registering for a beginner's manderin course next quarter, but then I realized that it would be mildly insane, not to mention incredibly difficult, considering my difficulties with the english language, lol.
