Hi, all,

This is actually my first post, which...makes me feel somewhat guilty, but can you all please help?

I'm trying to translate the phrase "white lotus" into Mandarin. It was kind of funny, really--this is for something I'm writing, where most of the characters are Japanese, and I had already translated it into Japanese ("byakure") before I remembered, "Oh, crap, no, this character's Chinese!"

If someone could please help me with this, I would appreciate it so, so much. I don't know any Chinese at all, other than what I've seen on "Firefly" and in my fortune cookies. It's very sad.

If there's anything I can do for whoever figures this out, they have but to ask.

Translate the entire phrase "Order of the White Lotus" and they can ask me to have their babies.

Thanks in advance,
Heather

Can't help with the translation, but you could try babel fish ( http://babelfish.altavista.com) which isn't perfect but does give fairly good translations.

In babelfish "Order of the White Lotus" = "白色莲花的定货"

It's actually byakureN in Japanese, "white" and "lotus." In Mandarin those would be pronounced bai4 and lian4 (4 = tone).

I'm not sure about "Order of." In the sense of an award of rank/medal (like Sir Michael Caine's Order Of The British Empire), it's xun1zhang1. You could make up Bailian Xunzhang, but it sounds like you mean a group of folks.

Perhaps you know that historically there have been Chinese secret "White Lotus Societies." These were Buddhism-related rebels fighting against the Mongols, and later the British, according to various online sources. In Mandarin it's Bailianjiao, "white lotus" and jiao4, "religion" or "teach"--the kyou in Japanese kyoukai or kyouiku. You could also think of them as the White Lotus sect, but they were fighters.

(In the 4th and 5th centuries there was also Bailianshe. She4 is "a society/organized group"--the sha in Japanese shakai. However, that seems to be just a Buddhist meditative group.)

Keep flying.

Ying

Ahh, thank you! It's not perfect, but, well, it's for a self-published comic--the odds that it'll develop a fandom big enough to call me on it are pretty low, but I like to get it as close as possible.

Thank you so, so, so much! If there's anything I can do for you, please let me know! I owe you.

Thanks so much, y'all! I love "Firefly" fandom; I was just "Buffy"/"Angel" fandom for a long time, and didn't even start watching "Firefly" until right after "Serenity" came out, and I've turned into a total addict. I'm glad to find out there are such nice people here!

Anyways, there's my gushing. Thanks again y'all!

Oh, yeah, actually, I did know that--not in detail, but I had read an article about it once. It called them messianic Buddhists who had a widespread reputation for conjuring devils and being vegetarians. I remember that part specifically, because that seemed like the oddest coupling of sins I had ever seen. "Conjuring devils...and being vegetarians?"

Just wanted to throw a quick note in here and thank you for bringing up the secret societies / Tongs. Thats one of the few missing points in Serenity!!! Both in Chinese and Japanese history monks took a active part in fighting and forming secret societies. The Chinese societies eventually evolved into the Tongs. Also if I remember correctly, when Buddhism was introduced to Japan through Korea it was considered as a "new weapon" with the mantras, prayers, and beliefs used to protect fighters (forgive me if I error) dusting off college related info. Thanks again for the interesting discussion. Take it easy and I will chime in again sometime.

Oi, dochira no baka wa kore no koto (thing) o tsukuri mashita ka?
Doubt, Capt we chargen or retreaten ??
