Hey I was wondering if some of the nice shiny people around here to help me out with some foreign swear words.

I'm writing a new series of short stories that I'll bring up at a later date when they manifest themselves into something I've used 'foreign' swear words in my stories for some time, but the last one I did used quite heavy in the alien language of it and this time the story has no aliens and it's a full planet migration kind of thing so I'm trying to cut out all references to race etc. People are just people in the story so I thought adding swearing from other languages would help bridge the gaps, like the use of chinese does in Firefly as it ties down the fact that there aren't any distances between the english and chinese in it.

I've already got some going for the first story, which is now complete. Except I've forgotten a few

The big one I can't remember is 'hu shen', one of the characters shouts it at another (female) so I'm thinking it means bitch or something similar but I have no clue.

I've also tried swearsaurus at insultmonger and none of them are remotely useful. They're like a bunch of kids looking through a dictionary for 'naughty words' like I saw one which, literally, was 'a noble erection' and another was 'suck butter from my ass'. Seriously no one is going to be insulted by that, my 5 year old nephew insults better than that.

I work with the short and simple swears, where someone says something and you get the strange feeling you should be insulted but you don't know why.

Thanks people

Sekarashika: Nagasaki slang for Shut the fuck up.
Shimatta: Damn
Kuso: Shit (I had added u which when written at end of word, means the letter before it should be extended, but checked and didn't need it.)
Ushi kuso: Bull shit, direct trans from English another way to say it is oki na usotsuki: lit a big liar.
yariman: slut or ho
baka: Fool
Baka yarou: Bastard
Hope this helps enjoy and have fun

No prob, Always glad to be of help!!! My theory on languages is you learn the fun stuff first and then build on the language and cultural aspects from there. Alright, which one did you end up using so far??? I've got the basics down. Need to work on the more colorful expressions, ie go through Serenity list and retrans a bunch of stuff into Japanese etc. Anyways take it easy and have fun!!

Capt, now this is what I call a fire fight!!

I used Sekarashika to end an argument and I also just got Baka muttered into a conversation. I think the hardest part of using it is to find the appropriate place so people know the rough meaning of what they're saying. It also mixes well with my use of mythology and cultures in my story. I also used the Japanese of donkey 'Usagiuma' as replacement for jackass.

Japanese is going to play a large role in some of the story, which is mostly because I like Japanese

I used to be quite good at spanish through a similar theory to yours, but then suddenly one day it was just gone like I had the knowledge lobotomized.

Swears are swears, I've got spanish ones in and german. They aren't as unique as the japanese ones, it's more about where they're put. So feel free to offer them, I'll find a time and place for them

Well, the native Germans on this board can probably be more help, but I'm happy to share those that I know:

Halt's Maul! = Shut up!

Verpiss dich! = F*** off! (I'm not sure what maturity level this board is, so I'll try to keep the English clean)

Bist du bescheuert? = Are you crazy? or Are you daft?
Or Du bist total bescheuert.

Du kannst mich mal! and Leck mich am Arsch!
These are both translated as Sod you! in dict.leo.org, but that's a British translation... I think they're about equivalent to F*** you!

That's all I got right now.

No Prob, glad I could be of help. Yeah have some fun ones. Your one of jackass, although it works is not the correct one. Lit its just donkey ie rabbit type horse. Usagi is rabbit and uma/ba is horse. A better trans of Jack ass is Roba. Still means donkey but a better way of using it as Jackass. tatoeba(for example): sorera no keisatsu wa cho roba da yo!!! (Those cops are really acting like Jack asses!!)nothing against cops just decided to add it in sorry) Another one that I can trans real quick from the list up for Serenity is Stinken Horse piss (kusai na uma unko/kuso) lit stinken Horse crap. unko or kuso can be used in this. means the same thing. Yeah it happens, gotta keep up practicing it or you lose it. One of my friends that stayed w/ me for a year. His English got pretty good but he didn't practice it when he went back so its alot harder for him to converse. Anyways have fun and I will try and throw a couple more up sometime here.

Sarge, which way we flanken ??? I swear these boys couldn't hit side of a damn barn. Thats what they get for joinen the Alliance

Alright, as a German native I would say that you are quite good ;-)

Well, despite some little naunces (I won't bother you with them right now) everything you said is right. You picked the rough ones though.

Here are few weaker ones:

- Ich glaub's nicht... -> I can't believe it!
- Raff' Dich mal! -> Pull yourself together! (this is a pretty new one, mainly used by teenagers)
- Scheiße! -> Shit! (You just can't live without that one)

And here two little Swabian specialties:

- Rutsch mir doch den Buckel runter! -> roughly translated something like: kiss my ass!
- Heilig's Blechle! -> Oh my Gosh!

Typically, one would just say 'yarou' if you're off the streets. Adding baka typically comes from a)a woman, or b) a pissed-off salary-man type.

'Shimatta' I always tagged with particle 'zo' for emphasis. and in my recollections most hot-headed people yelled it back at me ('Shimattazo').

Also available to ya in Jap:
'Temee': used as a 'Son of a bitch' or 'dumshit' type... not used as a direct noun usually, just an expletive IIR. (I.E., 'temee...mou keshite iwanu..' 'Dumb bastard/SOB..I ain't speakin to you again')
(The origin of this word actually is interesting, as I think this (and some of the others IIR came about as insults against the old ceremonial systems during the Sengokujidai)

Also, 'zakkenja nai, zakkenjanee, zakkenja nainda': "Go fuck yourself" Very strong street.

Just my two cents, having grown up around Jap punks for some years.

IKIYO.

DRE, Thanks for adding the stuff in
Yeah some of your stuff I'm guessing is probably hogen/ben (Regional slang). Most of my stuff is basic or from Kyushu area. Also for me its more insulting if you keep the baka in. Because its stronger sense your lit saying You stupid bastard. not familar with the zo. I know (yo) to add the emphise. but..... Anyways thanks again for adding the stuff in here. Well I'm commenting throw a couple other ones out.
Yabai: risky. A couple of my friends loved to use this one.
Muri: impossible (friends would yell this one out when ever I was playing pool) enjoy the language and keep having fun here. Also quick question for ya DRE, where did you live in Japan?

Ok swear words, obscure swear words but swear words all the same

CAUTION !!!!!! very bad english language used in translations

This is icelandic cursing, with direct translation and "proper" use:

Helvítis = Hell (used like english would use "shit" and can also be used with another word like helvítis Fox Network , taking on the same meaning as "fucking"

djöfullinn = Devil ( same as above)

skíthæll = shitheel ( used like "bastard")

Fífl = idiot (self explanatory)

Fáviti = idiot (we like saying that so we found more words to say it)

...if you want more let me know

And, this is off topic, but--you're Swabian?? My parents are Swabian, and damn proud of it! I already knew heilig's Blechle, but the other one is new to me. As is Raff' dich mal. I would love to hear any other new slang you've got...

Well, here's a couple of finnish swears:

Paskat! = Oh shit!
Haista paska! = Screw you! (Literally 'Sniff shit!')

Helvetti = Hell
Saatana = Satan
Perkele = Devil

Helvetti!, Saatana! and Perkele!: as curses they all roughly translate to Damn! or Goddamnit!

helvetin/saatanan/perkeleen = goddamned

Saatanan keskonen! = Goddamned idiot! (Literally 'Satan's premature infant!')

Hope this helps.

Edit: it looked very rude, so I took away some f-word equivalents and stuff.

While not very useful in cursing a person out, a little game a few friends and I started when we were working on cars was to who curse an offending nut or bolt the longest.

Repetition was not allowed neither were any of the "7 words you can't say on TV."

It led to some interesting strings.
... yellow snow eating, goat kissing, income-tax evading, ploka-dancing, hagis eating, plaid wearing...

Here's a few Welsh ones with some toned down translations for the young'uns. Note that "c" is pronounced as a "k"!

cach-gi = dog poo(lit)- generic handle for an unpleasant person.

coc-oen = lamb's penis - again used to descibe the chap above.

cachu = feaces, poo, shit.

cwd (pronounced kood) = 4 letter "c" word relating to female genitalia.

ast (pro. arsed) = bitch

tin (pro teen) = bum

twll-din (pro tooll dean) = bum-hole

I admit it's not much, but when we want to get unpleasant we swear in English!

For some reason, the English "Shit!" is much harsher than the German "Scheisse!"

Here are some more from a native German speaker:

"Fick dich!" - (lit.) "F*ck you!"

also as: "Fick dich ins Knie!", a proposition to go and f*ck yourself in the knee, which neither makes sense in English nor in German, actually...

"Friss Scheisse und stirb!" - "Eat shit and die!"

"Du kotzt mich an!" - "You make me puke!"

"Schwanzlutscher" - (lit.) "c*cksucker"

I´ll post some more when I can think of ´em...

Although we don´t actually say :"Scheissekopf" oder "Schwanzkopf". It doesn´t translate literarily.

You might use "Arschgesicht", which means "you´ve got an face like an ass" (not the animal), i. e. "assface", which wouldn´t be a proper swear word in English.

Also there is "Sackgesicht", comparing the face to a scrotum.

There are several ones meaning idiot and/or imbecile, like "Idiot", "Trottel", "Depp" or "Hirni". (The last one being out of fashion since the 80´s.)

A crazy person would be called "Verrückter", "Wahnsinniger", "Irrer", or, colloquially, "Spinner".

"You´re crazy!" therefore means "Du bist verrückt/wahnsinnig/irre!" or "Du spinnst!"

Just curious - if you have the time & inclination to do the following. From the movie Serenity Wash used Mandarin (???) when Zoe informed him Reavers were hot & heavy on her trail, and Mal said also said something I didn't understand to Simon when he amazingly decked him...
I'd love it if you wouldn't mind translating.

Yes, me too, I'd love to be able to swear in Mandarin, I absolutely adore challenges & this is a biggie...

If you are unable to swear effectively in English (or your native language), why not just learn to swear in Mandarin, it's ever so much more fun...I'm not bothering to justify this, my response to all those who say Sadie, you're crazy, is "and your point being is?" :)

Alright then, if anybody wants to swear in German at work, I´ll type in the words you need phonetically...

For example, "Scheiße" (shit) roughly is pronounced like this:

"Shy" + a sound like the first syllable (ce)of "celebration"

(I just realized that my first post here also was about shit. Great. Mighty fine way to make a first impression.)

I'm open to learning some fun phrases, for work and play (my e-mail buddies are kinda stumped @ some of the "foreign swears" I'm shamelessly borrowing from you nice folks - not anything really trashy (like F*** you) - and I'd love some full sentences to get their little 'ole minds to wondering.

Perhaps something odd that you'd never think of putting together - like "The old bastard's belly jiggles like jelly", and one I'd like to use on my army boyfriend "You're mama wears combat boots".

Can you come up with a couple of corny phrases like that for me Reimbutel?

REIMBEUTEL

Your wish is my command (or cussword), Sadie!

While I´m thinking of new corny phrases to translate, let´s start with the two you already mentioned:

"The old bastard's belly jiggles like jelly",

would (roughly again) translate as:

"Die Wampe von dem alten Sack wackelt wie Götterspeise!"

["Dee Wum-pe fonn dem ul-tan Zuck wu-cal-t vee Göttar-shpy-se!"] Gee, that looks weird! The "-pe" is short an pronounced like in "pen", the "dem" sounds like in "demolition", only a bit longer, the "ö" sounds somewhat like the e in the word German, the "-se" is also short, like in "seminar".

"Wampe" is a colloqial term for "Bauch" (= belly) and "alter Sack" is a not so nice way of saying "old man" and literally means "old bag (of bones)" or "old sack (of shit)".

(By the way: the "beutel" in Reimbeutel is the German word for a smaller bag, and a "Reim" is a rhyme, therefore Reimbeutel means "Rhymebag", a wordplay on slimebag. Slime in German is written "Schleim" and pronounced "shlyme".)

And the all-time favourite:

"Your mama wears combat boots".

"Deine Mutter/Mama trägt Kampfstiefel."

["Die-ne Moo-ter trea-gt Cumf-shtee-fell."]

The "-ne" is short like in "never", the "-ter" is short like in "terror", the "trea-" is pronounced like in "Reagan".

Combat boots are also referred to as "Springerstiefel" (Shpringar-shtee-fell), since they are associated with parachute troops, and all people who use parachutes (Fallschirme in German) are called "Fallschirmspringer".

And here´s another one to tide you over:

"Du stinkst aus dem Maul wie eine Kuh aus dem Arsch!"

("You smell from the mouth like a cow from the ass!")

["Doo shtinxed ow-s dem Mowl vee ay-ne Coo ow-s dem Ar-sh!"] The "dem" again sounds like in "demolition", only a bit longer. The "-ne" again like in "never" and the "Ar-" like in "arm".

"Maul" is a colloqial term for "Mund" (= mouth), and "Arsch" is, of course, a word for your rear end.

So much for today, class! There will be tests.

SHINYDS

I'd love to offer som good German ones, seeing as I'm living there right now, but it looks like the natives beat me to the punch. Unless it was mentioned and I managed to miss it somehow, all I can do is offer a shorter version of something that was already said. I've heard one of my roommates using the "Leck mich am Arsch," but he shortened it up to "Leck mich!" Needless to say, the other guy understood just fine what it meant. If I can think of any good ones, I'll post them, but for right now, unfortunately, I'm out. I don't know how helpful this website will be gramatically speaking, but vocabulary-wise it's all the words you never ever wanted to know http://www.notam02.no/~hcholm/altlang/

Nevermore, do you know any norsk or does it all come from the translator? Just curious. I only know about as much as you can fit into a fist.

A friend once told me that Motherf@#&er didn't translate into german with the same effect as in English. Something like Verpiss vixa? I think and instead of anger just shocked looks and definatley a taboo thing to say. In english you can call your friend a MFer and just be kidding around but not in German is this right?
Great idea for a thread BTW. I have been writing SciFi for a while (nothing published) and always like cultural textures I can add to a story.
