All the dialogue below was copied verbatim from the closed captions during the TV broadcast.

1) Mal: "Ching-wah tsao duh liou mahng."

frog-riding bastard

ching-wah = frog
tsao duh = riding (or sitting)
liou mahng = bastard

(Basically, Mal was swearing.)

2) Federal marshal: "Ni hao."

ni hao = how are you?

(It's a standard greeting like, "what's up?")

3) Jayne: "Shee-niou" high-tech alliance crap!

shee = shit
niou = urine

(That's Jayne's way of cussing....)

4) Simon: No, "mei mei" - it's time to wake up.

mei mei = little sister

Now that was a lot easier than the dialogue in Safe. :)

Okay, I don't know a thing about Chinese, but in the spoiler script pages posted on the official site, this was supposed to mean "frog-humping sonofabitch." No clue if they actually got it right, though.

Actually it's much more formal than just "what's up?" It's more like "How are you".

Also, has anyone noticed what it says on the medical uniform? There are four characters and I know the last two are "hushi" which means nurse, but I couldn't make out the first two.

If you are referring to the jumpsuits that Mal et al. wore, the 1st 2 characters on the back of the suit says "emergency", which makes sense since they are doing the work of EMT's.

Thanks for putting this up! Very helpful. :)

Some alternative meanings:

I've heard "liou mang" used mostly in reference to thugs; does it literally mean "bastard"?

I just saw the episode and heard him say it--perhaps he means "xi niou"? I think that means "water ox." I forget what the word for water ox is. Hm. Anybody?

Take care,

They got it wrong. I think the translator didn't understand the curse and translated it literally. Mal actually said: "Ruffian who frogs hump."

A very different picture. Probably more insulting, but less comprehensible.

I think its possible the translation was diliberatley literal.

What time did Firefly originally broadcast in America? I beleive many TV networks in America are very strict about swearing. Even in a foriegn language they might thought it safer to further obscure the meanings...

1) Mal: "Ching-wah tsao duh liou mahng."

the context of the phrase .. is
"frog humping bastard"

but the literal translating will be
ching wah - frog
tsao de - intercourse (insert more vulgar representation here)
liou mahng - ruffian/thug/bully

you could ignore the "duh" as it is used in chinese grammar as "in association to"

so if I used the literal it will be
Frog humping associated rufian.

Hope that clears your confusion.
