Hi, I'm trying to learn some Mandarin - enough to get by, and I was wondering if anyone else had some simple phrases/words for me to learn (yes/no/how are you?/etc.) Xiexie to anyone who can help.
P.S. Please spell phonetically, I've not quite got the hang of the proninciation yet.

...and we will call it...this land...

My high school science teacher said you need to know three sentences (all questions) of any foreign language to survive:
“Do you speak English?”
“Where is the bathroom?”
and
“Are you of legal age?”

Spelled the way they sound:

1. Ni hui shuo yin yu ma?
2. tse suo dsai na li?

tse suo = bathroom (generic)
You may substitute with the following:
Shi so jien = water closet (more polite in restaurants and hotels)
Yu shih = Bathing room (one that has a shower or a tub)
Hua Drun shih = powder room (fancy fancy)

3. Ni yo chen nien ma? (casual)

or depending on local law, use the following:

Ni yo mahn [heh fa deh nien ling] ma? (are you over legal age?; formal)
Ni yo mahn [er shi yi] ma? (are you over 21?)
Ni yo mahn [shi ba] ma? (are you over 18?)

I'll throw in a bonus phrase, according to me 9th grade English teacher that one must know:

"Wo bu shih ni the di ren" = I am not your enemy.

Another bonus phrase from me that might be useful but should never be abused:

"Wo yo mei jing" = I have U.S. currency.

Sounds like a good one.

Yes. There are 3 main ways to say it, and here they are:

好 hao3 (good, ok, yes)
對 dui4 (correct, yes)
是 shi4 (true, yes)

No. Just one major word, and you add the words from above after it depending on the context.

不 bu4 (not)
