The nation's top military official in the Middle East on Wednesday said Iran is one of the greatest threats to the U.S. today and has increased its "destabilizing role" in the region.

"I believe that Iran is operating in what I call a gray zone," Commander of the U.S. Central Command, Army Gen. Joseph Votel, told the House Armed Services Committee in testimony Wednesday. "And it's an area between normal competition between states — and it's just short of open conflict."

The general said Iran is exploiting this area in a variety of different ways, through things such as "lethal aid facilitation," the use of "surrogate forces" and cyber activities, among other things. He also believes Iran poses "the greatest long-term threat to stability" in the entire region.

U.S. Central Command is responsible for U.S. security interests in an area stretching from the Arabian Gulf region into Central Asia. It includes more than 80,000 soldiers on land, sea and air as well as the ongoing campaign to defeat Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (or ISIS) as well as the Taliban in Afghanistan.

I think that we have been the longest term greatest threat to stability of the Middle East since shortly after WWII. The breakdown of Republican and Democratic administrations in that time is about 50/50.

I wonder how much better the world would be if they weren't sitting on top of all that oil over there.

You've got to be fucking shitting me, right? A nation with barely a GDP of about 3.5% of ours and a population of about one-quarter of ours is the "greatest threat" to us? What- Do they have us ringed with nukes? An invasion force on our borders?

WTH???

No. The nations which have heartburn about Iran are Israel and Saudi Arabia. Let's not confuse their interests with ours.

Just for your information, the nation with the largest proven oil reserve is

Select to view spoiler:

Venezuela. So it's not like we don't have any place else to shop for oil!

What ARE our interests in the area? I mean, besides the military reflexively thinking that they "should" militarily control every square inch of the globe?

It's this kind of stupid... and I mean REALLY stupid... calculus that is such a big problem for us!

Meanwhile, the CentCom commander also responded to questions about reports the U.S.-led coalition air strikes against ISIS fighters contributed to the deaths of nearly 200 Iraqis in a western Mosul neighborhood on March 17.

"This was a very dynamic situation," Votel said of the airstrike. "So this wasn't a deliberate target or anything else. This was an evolving combat situation."

The general said the military has a standardized process in place on how it looks at such cases and will pull together information from various sources in conducting the Mosul probe. One of the many things he said the investigators will look at is the "intelligence that was provided to the us by the Iraqis."

Even so, he added there's a "fair chance" that the U.S. coalition strike targeting ISIS fighters may have also contributed to the high casualties, echoing a comment made Tuesday by Army Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend, the U.S. commander on the ground in Iraq.

Votel also reiterated a point made by Townsend that the munitions used in Mosul "should not have created the effects that have been observed," such as the collapse of entire buildings. He said the probe will look at whether "other things contributed to that as well."

"I would just suggest that everyone be cautious," said Rep. Mac Thornberry, the House Armed Services chairman (R-Texas) in opening remarks about the Mosul civilian casualties. "In a dense urban environment there might well be civilian casualties. But we also know for certain that ISIS uses innocent civilians as human shields and that they can arrange civilian deaths to further their misguided narratives."

Obviously, this^

Past that, it's a very disturbing thing the general said. I wonder how Russia feels about it, meaning will they risk $20 trillion to save an ally. I'm guessing yes, because Trump is also risking it if he follows this, and chicken is a game Putin likes.

Also this

let's hope Saudis don't drag us into yet another Yemen.

as for oil, sig, they want ALL the oil

1kiki, that's also worrisome. The US led attacks are the source of the civilian casualties and ISIS was part of that US-led attack. pretending they weren't is one of our nation's false narratives.

essentially, what 6 said. we're the problem.

put ivanka in a hijab and send her over to do rex tillerson's job, let him sign the oil deal, and we'll be right as rain with iran again.

It is again obvious, our three Russian trolls work to undermine what is in the best interest of America and our allies. While, supporting Russia and its allies. It's the same story thread after thread, post after post.

And 1kiki, we own our mistakes. If we are responsible we will say so. Russia targets civilians, hospitals purposely. That makes them ( you ) gutter trash, scum.

They have a narrative at least T. What's yours?

Not only do I never see you post any solutions to problems, but you don't ever actually state what you believe any problems are. All I ever see is you calling other people Russian trolls. I don't even know where you get that and you look foolish when you say it.

You haven't been sober and paying attention long enough to understand what is going on. What I post is my opinion. The threads I start, is my opinion. Just as Putin spreads fake news in an attempt to camouflage what he is up to, so does our resident trolls. His agenda is their agenda. To discredit the institutions of democracy.

The Real Russian Threat to Central Eastern Europe

Neo-fascism. Russian disinformation. State-sponsored ethno-nationalism. And all around unwillingness to do much about any of it — yet.

The European People’s Party adopted a resolution at its annual congress in Malta on Wednesday. The subject? “Russian disinformation undermining Western democracy.”

It’s the latest chapter in a push to get the European Union to take seriously what is becoming a growing threat to liberal democracy in the world’s biggest democratic club. And it comes just as lawmakers in the United States grapple with the fallout of Russia’s disinformation campaign during the 2016 election, widely believed to have been meant to help tip the scales in favor of Donald Trump.

Wake up to what? The Russian bogey man?

We don't have a Russian invasion on our hands. It's a bunch of left wing media propaganda. After 8 years of Obama we've finally started calling terrorist attacks from Islam what they are instead of being afraid to say it. Muslim people aren't the problem. The ideology of Islam is. Christians have been tempered. We now live in a mostly secular run state, and that is a good thing. The same now needs to be done to the religion of Islam. That is an actual problem that is tangible and needs to be addressed.

Instead, you choose to live in fear and chase shadows. You look for conspiracy everywhere. The MSM today is more than happy to give you all the untangible fear you're looking for.

I'm woke.

Maybe you should stop being afraid of ghosts.

Did Giuliani Try to Cut Deal Between U.S. and Turkey for Iranian?

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former U.S. Attorney General Mike Mukasey disclosed they wanted to go around prosecutors and cut a deal between the Turkish and U.S. governments for a client accused of laundering Iranian money, a federal prosecutor alleged in a letter to a federal judge Friday.

Giuliani, now President Trump's cyber czar, and Mukasey are part of the defense team for Reza Zarrab, a Turkish-Iranian gold trader charged in federal court with helping the Iranian government avoid sanctions and launder hundreds of millions.

They did not inform the court formally that they were representing the client, and lead attorney Ben Brafman said they would not be appearing in court on behalf of Zarrab. On March 28, the judge asked the defense to disclose the role of the two men in the defense team, and also explain why it had not been disclosed previously.

Giuliani, is Trump's cyber czar? That has to be a joke appointment. I guess he doesn't want the job being done. Rudy is the guy who dealt with the threat of terrorism by welding the manhole covers shut. Srsly. The guy who say 9.11 every time he talks should know that in NY, we remember. Ruday was a total douche. He also used to be pro HRC. I guess party before, oh fuckit, it's any port in a storm.

I guess it's open season. Please Russian hackers, come on in!
