Trump — the dealmaker — got outplayed by Putin.

The problem is that Trump wasn’t prepared.

Trump barely had any notes or talking points heading into the meeting (he also didn’t have a hotel room, by the way). Putin, by contrast, came in ready to go as he famously does.

Putin reached into his suit jacket pocket, removed notecards listing perceived American sins against Russia, and read them one by one. Only then could the substantive discussions begin.

After the meeting, it seems like Putin got what he was looking for.

Trump bought the Kremlin’s denials of election meddling, even though the entire US intelligence community believes the Kremlin mounted a sophisticated campaign to help him win the White House.

Trump’s top aides have been hemming and hawing for days about whether Trump would use today’s high-profile meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to hammer Moscow for its election meddling. Nope. Trump decided to back Putin and hammer the United States. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Trump told Putin that some in the United States were “exaggerating” how much Russia affected the election’s outcome.

Final score: Putin 1, Trump 0
Trump bought Putin’s lies about Russian election meddling.

There is evidence that some peculiar ideas of Russian origin are circulating inside Trump's mind. Against the advice of everybody loyal to the USA and competent to know if Russia hacked the election, Trump has sided with Putin on US election hacking.

To hear the Russians tell it, the president of the United States took Vladimir Putin’s word over the work of US intelligence agencies when it comes to whether Moscow meddled in the 2016 race for the White House.

During their lengthy meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, according to Russia’s foreign minister, Trump accepted Putin’s explanation that the Russia government did not interfere in the election. The US president also cast doubt on the credibility of his own government’s long-running investigation into Russian meddling, dismissing months of work by the US agencies—and the conclusions drawn by top officials Trump himself appointed.

“President Trump has said he has heard a clear declaration from Mr. Putin that the Russian government and Russian leadership has not interfered in the elections, and he accepts the things that Mr. Putin has said,” Sergey Lavrov told journalists on the sidelines of the summit on Friday, according to a translation provided by Sputnik, the Russian state new agency. Trump also told Putin that he has heard these allegations for “many months,” and that “not a single fact has been presented,” Lavrov said.

Lavrov also said that either Trump or US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson (he couldn’t remember) said the “campaign” about Russia’s alleged interference has taken on “a strange nature,” according to a report in Russian on RIA, another state-run news agency.

Lavrov’s statements haven’t been disputed by the Trump administration. They are likely to drive an even deeper wedge between the White House and the US intelligence community, even as the FBI and is investigating whether the Trump campaign or administration colluded with Russia to interfere in the election.

Trump’s continued assertion that any assertion that Russia meddled in the last US election is “fake news” have been publicly disputed by intelligence agencies and members of Congress.

I don't see anything here to even be concerned about.

We don't have any proof of Russian hacking or influencing. "17 agencies" you guys were quoting for a long time here turned out to be only some members of 4 agencies. To date, not a single shred of evidence has been given to the American public that this even took place at all.

If Trump does know otherwise because he's President, and he's privy to information that we're not, why would telling Putin he believed him mean that he was telling the truth to Putin? You haven't believed a single thing that Trump has said in 6 months. Why choose this thing?

You’re kind of hopeless about understanding, aren't you? You don’t want to know that your god is a gold-plated plastic idol because your future hopes would crash when Trump crashes.

On Jan. 6, the US director of national intelligence agencies issued a joint report (pdf) that said:

We assess Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the US presidential election. Russia’s goals were to undermine public faith in the US democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency. We further assess Putin and the Russian Government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump.
www.dni.gov/files/documents/ICA_2017_01.pdf

Top intelligence officials that Trump appointed himself have said publicly that Russia interfered in the US election in recent months. When the Senate Intelligence Committee held a public hearing (pdf) on the issue on May 11, Mark Warner, the Democrat from Virginia, asked agency heads to answer one question with a simple “Yes” or “No.”
www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2017/05/11/full-transcrip
t-acting-fbi-director-mccabe-and-others-testify-before-the-senate-intelligence-committee/?utm_term=.990f535a0e3d

Did they agree, Warner asked, that Jan. 6 report “accurately characterized the extent of Russian activities in the 2016 election and its conclusion that Russian intelligence agencies were responsible for the hacking and leaking of information and using misinformation to influence our elections?” Warner asked. (You can watch the question being posed at here at the 1:04:00 mark.)
www.intelligence.senate.gov/hearings/open-hearing-worldwide-threats-he

Every single intelligence official testified “Yes”—including Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and CIA director CIA Mike Pompeo, both Trump appointees.

“Russians have spread this across the globe,” Coats said then. “It’s a great threat to our democratic process.”

His boss apparently remains unconvinced.

It seems to me like we've gone from "THE RUSSIANS HACKED THE ELECTIONS!!!" to simply "The Russians influenced Americans by lowering their faith in the Democratic process".

Meanwhile, in Reality...

Nobody has trusted Congress for a VERY LONG TIME.

Even a very unpopular President usually has a higher approval rating than congress.

Hillary was a terrible candidate with A LOT of skeletons in her closet that were exposed.

The DNC colluded with Hillary, shut Bernie out, and even colluded with the MSM.

Seems to me like faith was already pretty low in the Democratic institutions in America before any supposed meddling by Russia.

It also seems to me like any faith that was given to them was misplaced.

If Russia did have any involvement in any of this, all they did was put light on some bad things being done.

Here's a tip. For politicians and the MSM.

Stop doing underhanded shit for a living, and then you can't be called out on doing underhanded shit for a living by 3rd parties.

I agree with you on that too.

The only problem is who decides what the "Truth" is?

I think you and I probably agree on a majority of issues in real life, but we seem to be polar opposites on most of what gets discussed in here regularly these days.

Coming from you, that's ironic. When you have to modify a standard definition ("evidence") just to give speculation, accusation, and paranoia some sort of credibility, it's time to start looking at whether or not you're parting ways with reality.

There's only way way to determine who's version is closer to "the truth" and that's by examining evidence - REAL evidence, not just someone's say-so - closely. Piece by piece.

For example, I've asked GSTRING more than once to define what he means by Russian "hacking" because, IMHO, there is evidence that they might have done some information-gathering, but none at all that they took active measures to influence our 2016 election. I guess that's just too much reality for GSTRING, who can't be bothered with little "details" like how the DNC has yet to turn over its server to the FBI or the Mueller for examination.

What are you talking about?

Are you not comprehending that Trump is a gold-plated plastic god? I'll give you an example from a real place in Ohio where the actual Trump is a fake President, only giving the appearance of reality without the substance. Here is the situation:

Given the scale of the opioid crisis, it’s not hard to understand why, when Trump promised Ohioans on the campaign trail to “spend the money” to confront the opioid crisis and build a wall so drugs would stop flowing in, locals in this historically blue county took notice. In late October, Trump became the first presidential candidate since John F. Kennedy to visit Ashtabula County. He promised to bring back jobs, to open the long-shuttered steel plants, to build the wall. Twelve days later, Ashtabula residents voted for a Republican president for the first time since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

Now here is where Trump reveals himself to be a plastic god:

1) The Trump wall between Mexico and Texas is not going to get finished in the next 8 years because Trump is not seriously pushing Congress to fund it. He still talks, this week, about Mexico's government paying for it. Such a joker! Remember the wall is for stopping drugs, not just Mexicans.

2) Steel production employment is not returning to 20th century levels because Trump will not outlaw steel made from scrape metal. (Scrape costs only $0.04-$0.065/lb.) Steel industry will not be switching back to making all steel from iron ore. Starting from ore requires twice as many employees compared to melting scrape iron.

In the next four point, Trump reveals himself to not even be gold-plated plastic. Instead, he is dipped in yellow:

3) Trump slashes funding for Medicaid, which is the country’s largest payer for addiction services—and which covers nearly half of Ohio’s prescriptions for the opioid addiction medication buprenorphine.

4) Trump’s 2018 budget proposes substantial cuts to the Administration for Children and Families,

5) cuts to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration,

6) cuts to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.

Don't you remember bitching all last year about being dispirited and unemployed because Obama would not help you? I remember mocking you that Trump would be a failure if he does not get you a job in his first hundred days. Are you now employed? Or have you decided that working is overrated? Have you started early retirement? Or are you waiting for Trump's second term in office to begin before he starts making America great again in your county? If greatness doesn't arrive by the end of eight years, will you be disappointed? Or will you just shrug and say "That's politics"?

I almost forget about your where is the evidence? thingy that seems to be your comeback line to every question about Trump's competence.

And it is worth repeating that Trump did not provide his income tax returns, unlike every President and every candidate. That is evidence that Trump is hiding something criminal. But what, precisely?

If I were prosecuting Trump, I'd subpoena his returns as evidence. We've heard all of Trump's excuses: that it would be a lot of paper (I guess Trump knows nothing of electronic documents), that it would inconvenience him ( that is why he has an accountant), that it would give ammunition to his enemies, but there is no ammo if there is no criminal tax evasion.

There is the uncomfortable fact that President Trump can be prosecuted while in office when he breaks a Federal law. Ask Bill Clinton about perjury and Monica Lewinsky. Unlike voters, the law has little tolerance for lying sacks of shit, be it Bill or Trump.

You live in ignorance. You have always been a Know Nothing. Your kind of "Evidence" will only come from Robert Mueller, many months or years from now, but Mueller has already been accused of being biased by the GOP, which means there will never, never, never be evidence of anything to satisfy 1kiki.

Trump’s first public comments on meeting with Putin were on twitter, not the customary presidential news conference at the end of the Group of 20 summit meeting. Putin, however, broke with his normal practice of not speaking to reporters and held a lengthy news conference, in which he told reporters that Trump had “agreed” with his statements about there being no such thing as election interference.

Putin is not waiting for Mueller's final report. Putin has already declared himself and Trump innocent of everything. You have to take his word for truth because Putin will not be providing "evidence".

Our 'intelligence' agencies supposedly have SOME type of evidence for all their claims - wouldn't you agree? Then they could easily solve their credibility problem by releasing some of it. Because it's not like they're trying to hide it from Russia, Russia already knows what we know.

So, where's that evidence?

Today's goddamn guilty confession out of Trump Junior's mouth:

Donald Trump Jr. was promised damaging information about Hillary Clinton before agreeing to meet with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer during the 2016 campaign, according to three advisers to the White House briefed on the meeting and two others with knowledge of it.

Hmmm. That’s more interesting, but it’s still based on anonymous sources who may or may not have an axe to grind. The only way we’d know for sure is if Don Jr. fessed up to it, and what are the odds of—

In a statement on Sunday, Donald Trump Jr. said he had met with the Russian lawyer at the request of an acquaintance. “After pleasantries were exchanged,” he said, “the woman stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russia were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Ms. Clinton. Her statements were vague, ambiguous and made no sense. No details or supporting information was provided or even offered. It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information.”

He said she then turned the conversation to adoption of Russian children….“It became clear to me that this was the true agenda all along and that the claims of potentially helpful information were a pretext for the meeting,” Mr. Trump said.

OK then. Whether it was a pretext or not, the Trump folks really did take the meeting in hopes that a very plugged-in Russian lawyer could deliver some dirt on Hillary Clinton. This is hardly proof of collusion, but it certainly moves things a little further in that direction.

The Trump White House has been asked over and over about meetings between campaign aides and Russian nationals. This certainly counts, but they they didn’t reveal it even to the government until recently, and didn’t disclose it publicly until the Times forced them to. Even then, Don Jr. insisted that the meeting was only about Russian adoptions until the Times once again forced him to admit that it had actually been arranged based on promises of Russian info about Hillary Clinton.

This kind of prevarication is what keeps this scandal going. Team Trump keeps swearing they’ve disclosed everything and there’s no there there. Then it turns out there’s something else. Then they lie about that something else until someone forces the truth out of them. This is not how innocent people act.

BTW, I fully expect you to not actually try to answer this question OR address my post.

Trump will be trying to stop election hacking by working with Putin.

The announcement stunned lawmakers from both parties, with Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham describing it as “pretty close” to the “dumbest idea I’ve ever heard.” Graham also blasted Trump for his continued refusal to acknowledge the Russian hacking campaign.

“He is literally the only person I know of who doesn’t believe Russia attacked our election in 2016,” Graham said on NBC News’s “Meet the Press.”

Graham does not know 1kiki.

Coming from you JO, that's ironic. When you have to modify a standard definition ("evidence") just to give speculation, accusation, and paranoia some sort of credibility, it's time to start looking at whether or not you're parting ways with reality.
There's only [one] way to determine who's version is closer to "the truth" and that's by examining evidence - REAL evidence, not just someone's say-so - closely.

- SIGNY

You also asked me about your constant lying.- GSTRING

Reflexive trolling and more lying from GSTRING.

You lie when you say "Cnn says the story is bullcrap" as if that means it's proof that CNN knows there's no collusion.- GSTRING

Good lord, GSTRING! You're raving at the voices in your head.

Where did I say that CNN's admission of bullcrap stories means that Trump is innocent?? The answer is: Nowhere.

But what it DOES mean is that the geyser of anonymous accusations that you, JO, SECOND, etc have pointed to as "evidence" has turned into a self-admitted spewing gusher of BULLSHIT.

Quote:

You know this takes time, you know they couldn't possibly know everything yet, and yet you want to suggest one flip remark by a line producer shows the party is over, no collusion. You're pretty dumb sometimes, but not that dumb.- GSTRING
YOU KNOW THIS TAKES TIME, YOU KNOW THEY COULDN'T POSSIBLY KNOW EVERYTHING, AND YET YOU WANT TO CONVICT TRUMP BEFORE THEY'VE EVEN COLLECTED EVIDENCE.

You're starting out, clearly, with the idea that Trump is guilty. It doesn't matter to you how good the evidence is, or how poor, all YOU'RE looking for is justification for your predetermined conclusion.

Not to be all epistemological, but "evidence" that Putin hacked Trump's election could be faked by anybody because the "evidence" would only be log files full of text about times, dates, URL's. Unless the hackers are working for Hollywood, there will be no physical evidence such as video of a Russian hacker at his keyboard and the CIA stealing that keyboard with fingerprints and showing it on TV to Trump.

You and Trump either believe what the intelligence agencies wrote about hacking, which requires trust, or else you and Trump have decided that nothing can be known about any kind of hacking in any kind of situation unless you did the hacking yourself. Only then would you know the hacking actually happened, assuming somebody hasn't rewritten your hacking memory using sci-fi tech.

On December 9, 2016, President Barack Obama directed the Intelligence Community to conduct a full review and produce a comprehensive intelligence report assessing Russian activities and intentions in recent U.S. elections. We have completed this report and briefed President Obama as well as President-elect Trump and Congressional leadership. We declassified a version of this report for the public, consistent with our commitment to transparency while still protecting classified sources and methods.

The Intelligence Community did not make an assessment of the impact that Russian activities had on the outcome of the 2016 election, and DHS assesses that the types of systems the Russian actors targeted or compromised were not involved in vote tallying.

This declassified version of the report is being released to the public and can be accessed via IC on the Record.

My Grandmother denied that Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon. She'd say that every year that passes without another landing is "evidence" the first landing was fake. Touching the Saturn booster at Johnson Space Center did not change her belief. The moon rocks on display could have been earth rocks according to her. The Lunar lander and Apollo capsule had to be fake because she wasn't allowed to touch those. I see that Buzz is amused by Trump:

Do you now see the basic problem when one combines those two thoughts? It means that all those accusations you parrot are based on what you already know is a total lack of genuine evidence - they're stuff made up out of thin air.

Now, maybe you don't see that as a problem. But other people do.

Now, maybe you don't see that as a problem. But other people do.

There is a problem with how you formulated the difference between Mueller and the CIA. Mueller goes to court and Congress. The CIA goes to war for the President.

Mueller needs to write a final report that can guide Congress, which has all the time in the world to decide. At this moment, no matter what Mueller places in his final report, Congress will decide to take NO ACTION. Years from now a different Congress might actually do the opposite of this Congress. That is why Mueller need not be in any hurry to finish his investigation. In contrast, the CIA is always in a hurry because it works for the President.

Why was the CIA in a hurry to decide about Russian hacking? Because Obama wanted to take action. If Trump doesn't like what the CIA reported to Obama, Trump can order them to again investigate Russian hacking. If Trump can't get the answer he wants from the CIA, then that is too bad. He will have to wait until Mueller finishes his report to get, Trump hopes, a different answer.

Is it necessary to say that Putin's statements denying Russian hacking, even if true, are without value in deciding whether Russia did hack?

Risking bringing T in this conversation to call me a Commie or another Putin puppet, I don't see what's so wrong about having "some connection to Russia", in and of itself. The way things have been going in the EU, I actually feel more comfortable with that connection than with.... say... Merkel.

There could be something to what you say. By all means, investigate the man. We waste tons of tax payer dollars on much less important things everyday from handouts to war. It is important to be able to trust our president, or at least trust that he's not "in bed" with the Russians. I'm for spending that money investigating it even if it turns up nothing.

The problem J0, is when you take some legitimate concerns and blow them completely out of proportion and accuse Trump of treason and/or being a slave to Putin.

I expect that from Rachel Maddow. She's making 7 million dollars a year speaking to her echo chamber that was yelling "Fuck Trump", "Not my president" and "No way, KKK" from day one.

I expect more from you though.

It is possible to get your point across without peppering in obvious bias and unsubstantiated claims. When you do that, although you might get pats on the back by the echo chamber, you basically shut the conversation down when it comes to moderates or anybody on the other side.

Even news leaked out of the White House itself they call fake news. I'd like to see them post factual information of our government officials saying nothing here, we should stop investigating Trump. Fake news and lies they say. What they avoid addressing is the elephant in the room. They can't find anyone actually in government that hasn't said the Russians didn't do it.

Even news leaked out of the White House itself they call fake news. I'd like to see them post factual information of our government officials saying nothing here, we should stop investigating Trump. It's heartening to know this is all going to come crashing down on their heads. It won't just be Trump who's taken out. Nope, they'll never live it down. They will be saddled with the label, liar, loser, trolls and fools. Opps, they already are aren't they.

Who's trolling who, T?

You seem like you're really bored today. Don't you have some fake news to watch?

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Hey THUGR:

“That was true; we did not have an open counter-intelligence case on him. We agreed I should do so if circumstances warranted. During our one-on-one meeting at Trump Tower, based on President-elect Trump’s reaction to the briefing and without him directly asking the question, I offered that assurance.”

Later, at a Jan. 27 dinner, Comey said Trump asked him to investigate the origins of a salacious unverified Russian dossier. Comey said it would not be a good idea because it “might create a narrative that we were investigating [Trump] personally, which we weren’t.”- JAMES COMEY

You're quoting something from six months ago troll. And its only a sliver of the investigation going on now. Nope, not going to cut it. You also quote the edited version of Comey's notes. Most were handed over to Mueller and we have no idea what's in them. Remember this as well. Comey did what he did to get a special prosecutor assigned to investigate. Why, because he knew a full out investigation would reveal Trumps crimes.

You are soon to be revealed as well comrade. Once you are it's over for you too.

The Russian lawyer who has been thrust into the spotlight following reports of her meeting with President Donald Trump's eldest son was a largely unknown figure until she began to represent the son of a Russian official in a major money-laundering trial.

You realize that the only way something like this would happen is if Signy were to be doxed like the guy that CNN went after.

I take this statement to mean that you are in full support of what CNN did, and that you would be in full support of somebody doing this to Signy because she posts ideas that you don't agree with.

Remind me again, who is the fascist here?

Not surprised you think it means something other than what I have stated before.

That's exactly what you mean.

You are for silencing voices that are not in line with your own.

The left has become the fascists, though they pretend not to be. This is why Google has a false definition of the word as the first result when looking it up.

Is it fascism to silence a Russian who simply wanted to help a Trump? Or was not fascism, but it was illegal for the Russian to help? So difficult to decide but only until the decision-maker remembers whether they are Republican or Democrat, then the answer is trivially obvious and completely changes. Politics sure ain't physics where the answer does not change with a change of reference frame.

The Trump campaign took a high-level meeting — Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner were also present — whose ostensible purpose was for the Trump campaign to work with the Russian government to take down Clinton, which certainly increases the plausibility that people from Trumpworld were involved in the anti-Clinton information operation — the DNC email hack — that we do know took place.

Trump, Jr.’s participation in the meeting is trouble for him because it’s illegal to seek foreign help of any kind, not just money, in a political campaign. Under 52 USC 30121, 36 USC 510, the law governing foreign contributions to political campaigns, you don’t have to actually get useful help from foreigners. According to this law, the mere fact that Trump Jr. asked for information from a Russian national about Clinton, and heard her out as she attempted to describe it, might have constituted a federal crime.

“If what Donald Trump Jr. said was true ... then they should have never had the meeting in the first place,” Nick Akerman, an assistant special prosecutor during the Watergate investigation who now specializes in data crime, says.

Whether Trump himself knew anything about the meetings his son was setting up is, of course, another matter. But it’s inherently difficult for Trump to put distance between himself and his own son.

You guys may finally have something there, if the person he spoke to falls under a category of person that cannot be spoken with. The law is tricky though, and I'm just going based off of what you're saying here since I haven't read it and you didn't link anything to it.

Everything I've read on the matter says that he didn't seek this help. It was offered to him. Again, depending on the wording of this law and any previous rulings on it, he may or may not be in breach of it.

I sure wouldn't want to have a legal struggle like that on my hands with no money for a good lawyer. I can imagine that Trump Jr. has the best lawyers.

You'll never link that to Trump, even if he knew about it. I doubt Trump Jr. would throw his Dad under the bus unless we're talking what eventually leads to charges of treason and the penalties for it. Short of that, all you would have on Trump is Thoughtcrime.
