Hey, Ive been in a firefight before! Well, I was in a fire. Actually, I was fired from a fry-cook opportunity.

Been an interesting 3 or so months. Best holiday I’ve had in years in July... no bad weather and it was high 20’s to mid 30’s the entire time and fishing and quad riding was awesome.

August helped in BC with the wildfires. Made a ton of new friends and we did good work the whole time. Came home and had a call from my Doctor. Something about my medical before I went to BC.

Sept was a whirlwind of Doctor visits and tests. Eventually wound up seeing an Urologist who explained my options to deal with renal cancer. Occupational hazard. 68% of firefighters get cancer of some type.

Its mid-October and while I appear to be cancer free, I also lost a number of internal pieces and parts and chemo is going to be pills rather than infusions. Got lucky there. I will say that having major surgery sucks like nothing else and avoid it if you can.

We closed up the house today and tomorrow my wife and I are going to the cabin for an extended period as I convalesce. No internet at the cabin. Follow-up medicals every 3 months for the next 3 years is just a few miles on the car and a chance to see the kids.

I don’t think I’ll be coming back. I think I’m done. I think there are way more important things in life than what I have been doing the last few years. I rarely saw people at their best or having a good day in my career and dealing with PTSD the last few years have worn me out with the darkness and it’s time for me to spend time in the light.

Glad you came back to fill us in. I absolutely agree the internet and the realities of life on this planet have become a festering suck hole. I don't think you'll miss a thing not being here anymore...I wish like hell I had another option, but since I am homeschooling -and may continue through her high school since it is going so well- I spend way too much time on a 'puter. The kiddo loves it, though. No one bothers her and I've never seen her so focused on just enjoying what she's learning. I'm glad the online high school thing didn't work out. I am continuing to fine tune our house while taking care of grandma, and then eventually we hope to sell and move to off to greener pastures. I am almost back to normal after the accident. Doubt I'll ever be 100% in that leg again...Enough to chase the dog around, though.

I know no one is ever the same after cancer, but I hope you get along well enough. I will always remember our conversations, and you as a decent man. There are far, far too few of those around. Your province will be at a loss without you. Enjoy the time with the Missus and your girls and the hot tub, and if I don't see you 'round again...
