My friend who's stranded there, with his kitty, is in Isabella.

On Facebook today, his son shared that they now have power there, & my
friend replied that both he & the kitty are fine.

The UP side of Trump disowning PR: just one more reason he ought not to
be president of anywhere, anything ... May a dark cloud hover over him.

Just so you know, Puerto Rico has issued a contract with a little-known power company with 2 employees.....Hmmmmm.....Oh and it happens to be in the same state as the Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke, actually in his hometown of Whitefish, what the attached report won't tell you is that he knows a relative or friend that works at that company - Whitefish.

Again, Hmmmmm!

A little bit about Ryan Zinke.......

Zinke was born in Bozeman, Montana and raised in Whitefish. He also threatened Alaska Senator Murkowski to bully her into voting for Trump's Health Care bill.

He's quite a character. He also engaged in expensive air travel at taxpayer's expense, a la Tom Price. Why isn't he fired as well.

"Congress gave final passage Tuesday to $36.5 billion in disaster aid
for Puerto Rico and several states impacted by a particularly destructive
hurricane season.

"The package includes $576.5 million to address the devastating wildfires
in California and the West."

This story also affects Puerto Rico: It could take as long as the year 2020 before some homeowners get federal funding to permanently rebuild or fix their Hurricane Harvey-ravaged homes, key state officials told a Texas Senate committee on Tuesday.
www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Red-tape-t
ies-up-Harvey-rebuilding-money-12303527.php

Although Congress passed a $7.4 billion initial relief bill last month to help people rebuild after the numerous natural disasters that hit the nation over the last three months, Texas General Land Commissioner George P. Bush warned that money has a lot of red tape to get through before Texans will see any of it.

He said historically, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has taken anywhere between 9 months and nearly 3 years to get that money to the people who need it. Additional aid was approved Tuesday, and more is in the pipeline.

"It is a painstaking process. Everyone is frustrated by it," Bush said moments after testifying before the Texas Senate's Finance Committee.

. . .

While Congress agreed to spend the money, HUD officials must go through a lengthy rule-making process to determine how the $7.4 billion can be used by states and which states get what share of it. But even that calculation cannot begin until better damage assessments come in from Puerto Rico, said HUD spokesman Brian Sullivan.

In short, the rule-making process to even start the process of actually spending the money has yet to begin.

Hmmm.

So the folks who have a job or some money will repair their own
homes long before the gub'mint sends any relief money.

The folks in poverty will camp out, roughing it.

The olde folks will die unless their relatives can get 'em to
the mainland.

I think I'll ask my friend over there where to donate a bit.

The people have also been exposed to contaminated water as they are drinking from rivers and streams throughout the island. I believe there have been 6 or 7 deaths due to a treatable water-born disease known as "leptospirosis," which brings the total number of deaths from Hurricane Maria's aftermath to 51. The disease is spread by animal urine in the water.

Second, the power situation has been going on for years, but it came to a head after the storm hit the island.

Apparently, the power authority in Puerto Rico has been affected by the economic crisis on the island. There is a video that I recently saw that explains it all, or, at least, gives an overview of the situation. I will try to find it and post it here.

But, suffice it to say, it's been a domino affect - a change in how busniesses apply their taxes, so several large companies left the island in droves, including the power company employees, insearch of a new life on the mainland. The power grid was left in disrepair and that caused the system to be strained and then the storm hit.

Part of the problem is how FEMA requires Puerto Ricans to apply for disaster aid. Lynch said FEMA workers were asking residents to give them copies of utility bills and bank routing numbers. Then the agency promised to follow up via email or text. But most people don't have electricity or phone service, and their homes and documents may be destroyed.

The nation's largest nurses union condemned the federal government's emergency response in Puerto Rico on Thursday for "delaying necessary humanitarian aide to its own citizens and leaving them to die." The official death toll from the storm so far is 51, though Vox's own reporting suggests the actual number of deaths could be in the hundreds.

This is what the Mayor of San Juan was talking about, plus I saw a video (live feed) on Facebook of FEMA staff and employees getting their drink on in a luxury hotel lobby. And yet another video of government officials and nurses getting pedicures.

I don't know how true it is, but I saw a headline on the internet that proclaimed that the Puerto Rican government (meaning the governor) cancelled the contract with WhiteFish. Hmmmm, something really smells to high heaven....suddenly they withdraw the contract, probably because with the FBI conducting a full audit they will find
where the smell is coming from.

Prying eyes...they're watching you, watching your every move...Prying eyes!

OK. So the 2 guys from Whitefish, MT, were to be paid $3M to repair the power
lines in PR. .. But PR has changed its mind.
I haven't seen any clear details on this story yet.
But most of the power is still out over there.

If this was our PG&E power lines here in my hometown ... PG&E woulda sent
their guys out the next day to fix on 'em. It can't very well be that PR has a
power grid & no one there is responsible to maintain it ... that would make no sense.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I post these things not because I necessarily believe they are 'the truth', but because it's more information.

for your consideration:

ays-contract-to-whitefish-company-should-be-canceled/2017/10/29/e5336cda-bcb8-11e7-97d9-bdab5a0ab381_story.html

Puerto Rico’s electric company moved Sunday to cancel a $300 million contract with a small Montana firm for repairs to the territory’s hurricane-ravaged electrical grid, saying controversy surrounding the agreement was distracting from the effort to restore power.

The contract with Whitefish Energy — a firm that had just two employees the day the storm hit — had drawn blistering criticism from members of Congress for days. And on Friday the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which has a large role in determining government reimbursements, said it had “significant concerns” about how the contract was secured.

The figure is $300M and the contract was killed, according to reports, but this was a "greed" move on someone's part, but what I can't figure out is how they thought they were going to get away with it, with so much focus on the island's troubles.

That, I must say, was a real stupid move on the part of the governor, Secretary Renke and DJT. Now the FBI is on the case, and I would bet that there are quite a few FBI cops just itching to put a boot in the ass of Trump and Company for what was done to Comey.

This is getting better by the minute. Go ahead boys, go get 'em. And when you do boot him in the ass, make sure to wear your cowboy boots.

“significant concerns” - Now there's a fucking monumental understatement.

Well!? Is it Fake news or not?

It's what a friend of mine would say: Tira y Tapate.....loosely translated it means "duck and cover"

Anyway, Whitefish is being investigated by the FBI. These boys really thought they could slip a fastball by the Mighty Casey at bat...foolish thinking on their part.
Real subtle...good one, I say.

Whitefish was being paid (not the employees who get, perhaps, 33%, because it's not in the contract) an hourly rate for a site supervisor set at $332 per hour and $227.88 per hour for a "journey lineman" according to a contract seen by CNN. The deal also specifies the estimated cost of nightly accommodation would be $332 per worker and nearly $80 per day for food.

There's also a clause in the deal that bars FEMA, the government of Puerto Rico and the Comptroller General of the U.S. from auditing the cost and profit elements of Whitefish's labor rates. It was an invitation for Whitefish to cheat on billing.

Yes, the I heard that too about the contract. Somebody was going to walk away with a boatload of cash. What I'm interested in, is that the FBI is still going to investigate the matter.

If, after they complete the investigation, it is found that that is a standard contract and that WhiteFish is clean...then they should be allowed to proceed.

But I'm a bit curious. Isn't it customary for utility companies to "rally" around the crisis center and band together in an "all-hands-on-deck" manner to restore some semblance of normalcy? I always like when cops and firefighters pack up and go help a different state in a time of crisis. Why wasn't it done in this case?

Six weeks and counting.

Oct. 2 - Rather than call on mutual assistance from U.S. mainland utilities, the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority decides to rely on the Army Corp of Engineers and hire contractors, like Whitefish, to rebuild the power grid and restore service.

Why did the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority do that crazy thing? Money. 100% paid for by Donald J Trump. Trump was giving money away. The only limit was finish the job in 180 days. It was an opportunity for friends of Trump to steal federal money, but Trump's friends got too greedy and it was too obvious that they were cheating the federal government:

Sept. 26 - President Donald Trump increased the federal government’s share of costs to 100 percent funding for debris removal and emergency protective measures, including emergency power restoration, for 180 days.

'Cause this sounds like something "Six-pack" would say. Do you know how PR got into such debt? Second: They had Casinos and tourist trade; mainly in the San Juan area.
And C: If Florida has more to offer, then can you, or anybody, explain why, if Puerto Rico is so worthless, why the United States declared - at gunpoint I might add - the island as a colony?

Why, if they don't have the resources that Florida has, did Congress establish that it's citizens be declared American? Why did Congress write laws that would guarantee American companies certain tax advantages siphoning off billions of dollars in revenue? Why did Congress establish the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, better known as the Jones Act? Why would American companies establish trade routes importing coffee, sugar and rice to the island when they have the land and resources to produce their own? Why was the US Navy so interested in a little island southeast of the island of Puerto Rico? Especially since Florida has so much too offer.

Little known Facts

-Puerto Ricans pay most US Federal taxes
-Most residents do not have to pay the federal personal income tax
-In 2009, Puerto Rico paid $3.74 billion into the US Treasury
-Puerto Ricans pay into Social Security, so they get SS benefits, but are excluded
from SSI
-They pay import/export taxes; payroll taxes and medicare taxes
-Most are only required to pay US Federal income tax return if they have income sources outside of Puerto Rico or if they're US government employees.

There are other intricate tax codes that determine federal taxable income. Then there are convoluted Commonwealth taxes, sales taxes and don't get me started on the voting rights.

There is so much more regarding the status of the island that can't be answered simply here. Suffice it to say that it is substantial. So, ask yourself why a powerful nation, claiming to be for freedom and sovereignty, like the United States, would be so interested in a tiny insignificant island? Then talk to me about the worth of such an island as compared to Florida.

This other article has graphs clearly showing a 1996 tax law change in Washington DC ("Section 936") caused an economic collapse in Puerto Rico.

There was a video I found weeks back that gave a really clear and concise accounting of the whole economic debacle, plus a brief economic history. I'll try to find it again. Thanks for posting the article Second.

Saw a blurb on the internet that Con Ed of New York is sending workers to Puerto Rico to help with the electric grid.

The Latest on the White Fish scandal goes a little like this:

It seems that the contract voided by the governor of Puerto Rico had a 30-day notice clause; and so the company is still there working on the power problem until the end of the month.

1. Despite the above, work has met with a few problems (quelle surprise!) it seems that the power line that White Fish has worked on has gone down twice.

2. They are charging the government of Puerto Rico twice as much as contracted for hourly wages and for meal allowance.

Why should we care?

Cause we are paying for it.

Have a nice day!

I saw an interview Friday with recent arrivals from Puerto Rico (in Florida) and they stated that the death toll is much more than has been reported. Many elderly have passed away due to illness, dehydration and lack of medicine.

Next thing will be the spread disease - through wild animals, rats etc. A major section of San Juan has no electricity - still. A village within San Juan - Villa Capri - has a section where many elderly people live. It's been 90 days and counting.

I saw an interview of recent island evacuees that spoke of this; they said that many have not been reported due to the lack of communication throughout the island. Makes sense.

I was just commenting on how you said the death toll numbers was a cover up and then two sentences later you saw an interview where people living it give a reason that the numbers aren't out there.

As for what the banks are doing, I don't have an answer. I mean, I'm not surprised that they'd be doing this. I'm sure at this point almost nobody is paying their debts back to the bank. Most of their houses and jobs are gone.

I'd say that I don't believe that the banks would actually want that property because it's worthless, but what do I know?

I'm almost 100% confident that the people of Puerto Rico will vote to become official citizens of America to cash in on tax dollars to re-structure everything. On that day, the death knell to the heritage of the Puerto Rican people will be dealt.

That money isn't going to come for free. My guess is that everyone in Puerto Rico will eventually have a place to live, but most of them will not own it anymore. Any of the prime land after cleanup will be owned by wealthy outsiders, and the crappy land in the middle will have cheap public housing for the natives. There will be plenty of jobs though, once Tourism becomes the almost singular force of their GDP.

Cuomo probably should have been keeping an eye out for warehouses with over 2 Billion dollars of aid that's been sitting around collecting dust (or worse) since we gave it to them.

Or maybe Trump dialed up CERN and they fired up the collider and sent it all there last week through a wormhole.
