I saw something I don't think I've seen before.

I've had this house almost 8 years. I was about to leave, and noticed something at the bottom of my door. It was snow. On the inside of the doors threshold. The door had been closed and deadbolted for more than 20 hours. And the white stuff at the bottom of my door was still snow.

Last Friday or Saturday I saw weatherguessers saying the warmest of the next 10 days was going to be Sat at one degree above zero. The other days will all be too cold to snow. So then I wake on Monday to something like 10" of snow, which is reportedly the 5th highest single day snowfall here.
And now temps are dropping to -25 degrees F, with Wind Chills down to -60. Schools and events are closing for Tues evening, all Wed, and Thurs until noon.

That algore invention of Global Warming is really kicking in.

I saw that Anchorage Alaska is about 90 degrees warmer today.

"It snowed, so climate science is made up."

You're as stupid as Trump himself.

And that's really, really stupid. Here, dummy. See if you can read at middle school level. I doubt it. English is hard for Russian trolls.

Polar Vortex: How the Jet Stream and Climate Change Bring on Cold Snaps
It might seem counterintuitive, but global warming plays a role in blasts of bitter cold weather. The reason: It influences the jet stream. Here’s how.

Meanwhile, in Australia, it's so hot that birds are dropping from the sky. And as you posted, Anchorage is much warmer than you are!

Jeez, JSF, I know it's cold where you live but (1) It's unlikely that you will break all-time record lows because ... well, things are getting warmer and (2) you need to take the whole globe into account, not just your neck of the woods.

The warming of planet Earth continues apace, and the ramifications become ever more stunning with each passing month. While no single meteorological event or phenomenon can be attributed solely to human-caused climate disruption, this is now nearly always the leading cause of the event, or at the very least a major contributing factor.

Recent data from the World Meteorological office showed that 2018 was the fourth warmest on record, making the last four years the hottest four years in Earth’s recorded history.

On that note, it is worth remembering that the single worst mass extinction event in Earth’s history, the “Great Dying” that happened 252 million years ago and took out as much as 96 percent of all marine species and two-thirds of terrestrial life, occurred due to rapid planetary warming.

Another feedback loop has been discovered in the Arctic, this time in Greenland, where it was recently reported that melting glaciers are yet another source of methane.

It was also recently revealed that Greenland saw an “unprecedented” loss of ice over the last two decades. Another study by a US research team had shown that the decade of 2004-13 experienced more sustained and intense melting there than during any other 10-year period in the 350-year record. This means that Greenland is contributing more to sea level rise than previously understood, adding more than at any other time that record keeping has existed. Melt water runoff there has increased 50 percent since the industrial revolution began.

Was only -57 today in Wautoma. Most places only lowest temps in 23 years. Weather Radar systems are inoperative because they are freezing.

Shore yore right.

These cows farting are really causing catastrophe. They are causing Global Warming on every Celestial Body in our Solar System, even planets on the opposite side of the Sun from Earth. Plus, retroactively heating up the Sun itself - that glowing orange blob spikes the energy output, just before the cows pass gas and overheat Earth at the same time as every other planet.

You should not belittle the impact of the farting cows dooming the entire Solar System.

I'm about as quick to say that climate change doesn't exist as I would to be to say that there absolutely is or is not a God.

There's not enough data, and there is plenty of evidence to support that a lot of the data out there is manipulated for political purposes.

Personally, I err on the side of caution with this one. However, I have no idea what to do about it that wouldn't put an immediate end to the way of life as we know it. Half of China looks like L.A. did back in the 80's right now. We're still doing all the same damage. We just outsourced it to the other side of the world is all.

And if a state reorted an all-time low, was that only one reading? The entire state? Something in-between?

I'm not saying that there aren't people who are benefiting from this. Of course there are. And of course it's at the expense of the working class in America.

Hence my trepidation about the whole ordeal.

There's nuance in everything though, and I think it's a big mistake to take a hard line stance and say that you don't believe in global warming because of these facts.

JSF, tptb will ride ANY excuse/crisis to enhance their power.

Water shortage? Just hand over your power to a central authority and they'll fix it for you!

Health insurance/ economic crisis? Ditto.

R2P? Ditto!

Climate change? Ditto!

What was it that Rhamn Emmanuel said? Never let a good crisis go to waste?

But just because they take advantage of crises ... indeed, create them ... doesn't mean that they don't exist.

Climate change is not a political, metaphysical, or magical problem. It's a physical one, like a car breaking down. It has physical causes and physical solutions.

Of course there is a solution. Stop cows in America from farting, only let cows in China fart, and reduce Energy Spikes from Sol. Give more money to Dem politicians and algore. Maybe also stop moving long-term temperature sensors from open rural spaces to congested industrial hot-exhaust zones.
Easy, peazy.

JSF, there are a lot of solutions

1) Stop the USA military from patrolling the entire world, because there is a tremendous energy cost to flying our jets and steaming our ships (which consume gallons per second) hither, thither and yon; the USA military is the largest single user of energy in the entire world,

2) Are you worried about job loss? Then reduce automation (instituted only to increase profits) and replace those energy-hogging robots with human labor power, which is already consuming kilo-kilocalories just maintaining body heat,

3) Make production local. A large fraction of our energy use is transportation, so reduce the amount of transportation embedded in each produced item,

4) Change our farming practices to put carbon back into the soil. Do you know the difference between sterile dirt and fertile soil? Biomass,

5) Manage our forests to reduce wildfire. Make mile-wide firebreaks by thinning forests and using the thinned trees and shrubs onsite to create energy and "black soil" =biochar= which is a long-term carbon storage technique first discovered thousands of years ago,
http://biomassmagazine.com/articles/1298/pyrolysis-char-rejuvenates-ti
red-soils
/

None of this is bad for America, or Americans. It does require the government's willingness to reduce transnational profits, tho.

PS Apologies for the typos. I was texting from my phone (with teeny-tiny letters) without my glasses!

In terms of employment, the clean energy sector already employs more than 3 million Americans — about 14 times the number of coal, gas, oil, and other fossil fuel industry workers — and has the potential to employ many more with further investments in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and electric grid modernization to replace the aging coal-powered infrastructure. Indeed, moving forward with the Clean Power Plan alone could deliver more than a half-million new jobs by 2030. Meanwhile, coal jobs aren’t so much being transferred “out of America” — another Trump claim — as they are falling victim to market forces as renewable and natural gas prices decline.

Finally, rather than giving China and India a pass to pollute, as Trump claims, the pact represents the first time those two major developing economies have agreed to concrete and ambitious climate commitments. Both countries, which are already poised to lead the world in renewable energy, have made significant progress to meet their Paris goals. And since Trump announced his intent to withdraw the United States from the accord, the leaders of China and India have reaffirmed their commitment and continued to implement domestic measures toward achieving their targets.

Climate change is real, because, unlike the existence of God, it has been proven.

If we don't cut all CO2 by the time it hits 2 degrees, it will accelerate all the way to 5 degrees, and virtually all life will be wiped out.

We have 12 years to turn it around, or we're done for.

The evidence HAS been discovered, son. Temperatures ARE going up. CO2 IS going up. They've both been measured.*

And I've looked into every single argument that scientists and others have forwarded to deny the evidence, from Climategate to measurements of CO2 trapped in ancient ice (Altho they better take more samples quick! That ice is disappearing fast!) to deposits of diatoms in ocean sediment to tropospheric v. stratospheric temperatures, and I feel I have a good understanding of all that. All I see at your end is someone closing their eyes and plugging their ears in denial... I have a feeling that you don't have the faintest idea of what the evidence really is, do you? It's something that you never even looked at, is it?

*Altho this latest event does point out the difficulty of measuring global temperature. If the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-Saint Paul have 200 temperature sensors, but the vast majority of Minnesota has only 200 more sensors, it would be unfair/unwise to average all of that in together, because it would "overweight" city temperatures. Apply that problem worldwide, to where vast parts of the ocean have a limited number of buoys, and you can see that coming up with worldwide temperature average requires adjusting the data to make sure that no one physical region is "overweighted" compared to others which have limited data.

I'm sure you appreciate the problem because you're a numbers-kind-of-guy. I've read the papers on how those adjustments are done ... have you?

The Little Ice Age started in 1610

A study conducted by researchers at the University College London (UCL) found that the arrival of European settlers decreased the population of indigenous people in the Americas by 56 million over the course of roughly 100 years, causing large areas of farmland to go abandoned and reforested.

The study said the new swath of vegetated land, which CNN reported was roughly the size of France at the time, caused a massive decrease in carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere.

Levels of carbon in the atmosphere had changed so much that it caused the planet to experience a global chill in 1610 that is now known as the Little Ice Age, researchers said.

"CO2 and climate had been relatively stable until this point," UCL geography professor Mark Maslin, one of the co-authors behind the study, told CNN on Friday. "So, this is the first major change we see in the Earth's greenhouse gases."

Maslin told CNN that he and the team of researchers conducted the study by examining archaeological evidence and historical data and analyzing Antarctic ice, which can trap atmospheric gas and reportedly reveal the quantity of carbon dioxide that was in the atmosphere long ago.

He said a combination of all of the above showed researchers how the reforestation that was brought on by the population decrease of indigenous people in the Americas led to the global chill.

"The ice cores showed that there was a larger dip in CO2 [than usual] in 1610, which was caused by the land and not the oceans," Alexander Koch, the lead author of the study, told CNN.

Corporations are wrecking this planet.

I think it really hit me last Sunday morning as I was driving my 5 kids back to our home after we had breakfast at the local diner (it's a weekly tradition for all of us to get the Hungry Man breakfast of Steak & Eggs with sides of ham and bacon). My mind had been drifting as the kids squabbled in the back (we have a huge SUV so I actually feel kind of removed from them as we drive). The long drive back to our home in the countryside gives me time to think, so I don't mind the hour long round trip I make in to the city I seem to make almost every day (I also get to glance over the snowmobile trails where we ride in the winter and the lake we go speedboating on in the summer, which is nice!).

Anyway, I started thinking about how corporations were really wrecking the planet, as I'd learned on Reddit that they are responsible for the vast majority of carbon emissions, which were causing rampant global warming. It was hard to believe at first, but the more I thought on it I realized that it was true.

Later on, when I got home to our big 4500 sq.ft. house, I almost felt like I could feel the avarice of those bastards and the people controlling them weighing down upon me and my family. I could almost see their emissions of carbon filling the air. I decided to retire to my outdoor hot tub (really pleasant in the winter) to think more on it. It was their profit motive, their rapacious greed driving the destruction of our Earth.

I wanted to help, to do something to contribute to making the world more sustainable, but I had also read on reddit that changing individual behavior wasn't even worth contemplating in the face of what corporations were doing to the planet. The three hamburgers I ate for lunch tasted like ash in my mouth, the roast lamb for dinner not much better, and not even distracting myself with movies on our big screen TVs, numerous computers and iPads, or perusing all my photo albums (we try to fly to a different part of the world every few months) could make me feel better.

I didn't want to take my sports car out for a drive in the winter, which could have made me feel better. Cranking the heat up in my house barely got rid of the chills I felt as I fretted about the lack of control I had to affect corporate carbon emissions. I only knew that my own actions were inconsequential.

Anyway, can anyone here tell me what I can do to stand up to corporations who are wrecking things for all of us by being responsible for almost all the carbon our society is emitting?

I just noticed the weatherstripping all around my door is now sporting frosted ice. On the inside.

The snow and ice inside my door melted yesterday, while outside is warming 105 degrees in 3 days.

Troll, maybe you should try paying attention, like to hints such as the direct quote producing the direct response.

Technically, I don't think you're supposed to be counting wind chill as the actual temperature.

Not sure if it got down to temperatures only seen on Pluto where you live, but where I'm at we're going to see about a 70 to 75 degree warmth increase in 3 or 4 days. (-20 to 50 or 55 degrees).

Do Right, Be Right. :)

And we'll see more and more weird weather as the scientifically proven fact of climate change continues to worsen.

The next few hurricane seasons will be something.

Dilbert: I invented a cost-effective product to harvest CO2 from the air and turn it into construction material.

Asok: So...you invented a tree?

Dilbert: What?

Asok: Trees take CO2 from the air and turn it into wood. Your invention will compete with plants and trees for necessary CO2. It seems you have doomed all life on Earth.

Dilbert: Not if people act rationally and stop removing the CO2 when...wait... You're right. I doomed the planet.

Boss: I'll be dead by then, so ship it.

Scott Adams draws Dilbert. On his blog, Adams always ends up endorsing the Republican for President, but he does it in the sneakiest possible way: first endorsing the Democrat, then switching to different third party candidates, eventually switching back to the Democrat before finally endorsing the Republican in the week before the election. He has done this in every election since he started a blog in the previous century. Mostly, people seem oblivious that it is all just a gigantic Dilbert joke with Adams. https://blog.dilbert.com

On Adams' latest episode of his blog:
Has President Trump EVER had a better week?
Great job numbers report
Northam story is Christmas every day for President Trump
Abortion painted in the worst possible way
Chuck Schumer staffer got a “me too”
INF treaty pullout, being tough on Russian treaty cheating
CNN caught in chyron fake news

I learned the astonishing fact that more than half of the carbon we have emitted into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels was emitted in the past 25 years. This means we have burned more fossil fuels since the UN established the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) than in all of the centuries before – so we have done more damage knowingly than we ever managed in ignorance.

"The five warmest years have, in fact, been the last five years," he told the Times. "We're no longer talking about a situation where global warming is something in the future. It's here. It's now."

GISS also noted that the average temperature of the globe in 2018 was 1º Celsius (or 1.8º Fahrenheit) higher than the average temperature at the end of the 19th century, as human activities began emitting more and more carbon into the atmosphere following the Industrial Revolution.

Last year: 10 years to 1.5 degrees, now 5 years to 1.5 degrees. FASTER THAN EXPECTED!
In 2017:

https://www.independent.co.uk/environment/earth-1-half-degrees-global-

But today, on the front page:

Pro-tip: When your linear trend line has to keep getting corrected up - it's not a linear trend.

(The chart/trend/model makers know this, but if you DO add an exponential term to the chart, perhaps it looks a bit too scary, and a bit too soon? So instead we get flattened graphs with "reasonable" increases, that need to be revised every couple of years.)

You see, if we hit 2C, the feedback loops really kick in, and it becomes entirely unstoppable.

You need to listen to the experts, not the shills that fossil fuel billionaires pay to lie to you.

If there were no fossil fuel billionaires, people would still disbelieve in global warming because they do NOT want to pay to switch away from fossil fuels, the cheapest energy available. The best psychological strategy for those people is to deny that climate change justifies a switch. Then they can feel good about their decision to buy the cheapest energy, at least until a wildfire or hurricane destroys their house, for example. That sad day may never happen in their lifetime, probably, but it is a certainty they save money buying the cheapest energy.

Our own president doesn't care. He thinks if we ignore it, it can't happen.

To climate deniers it will never matter how many whales or flying foxes die, unless the bodies are piled on their front porch. Climate deniers will fight to the death not to pay even one cent more for energy when fossil fuels are cheaper than alternatives. If change is forced on them by government, climate deniers will hold a grudge against that political party, presumably Democrat, forever. Trump knows this.

Before a climate denier would voluntarily switch to green energy, either green energy gets cheaper than fossil fuel or a climate denier's house burns from wildfire and floods from hurricanes. But maybe not even then.

The Democrats released their Green New Deal to "achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions".

The better part of valor is to do what the GND resolution does: say nothing about paying for it. Money is where brutal opposition and climate denial begins.
