The strongest Atlantic hurricane on record to make landfall, with top wind speeds at 220 mph - tornado-strength.

Warming waters. Coral bleaching. Slowed jet stream and biggest-hurricanes-ever. You can quibble about the data but the effects of global warming aren't coming, they're already here.

Can't help but thinking of "Mother of Storms" a scifi novel that mixed cheesy sadistic porn committed by world leaders and top-notch research into how bad hurricanes can get.

It's going to be bad and depending how much steam it either picks up or looses going up the eastern seaboard. Will determine how much of a hit Atlantic Canada takes.

It's not moving. It's been going 1 mph all day and Freeport has had sustained winds over 100mph for an entire day. Ten minutes of it here was enough, a whole day would be horrific.

I think these hurricanes are natures way of saying "MOVE INLAND, YOU DUMB SHMUCKS-I"M MELTING GREENLAND NEXT!"

That's insane. An entire day of 100MPH winds would probably knock down all of my trees and my porch... maybe take the house with it when it all fell.

5 minutes of it earlier this year left me with limbs the size of small trees to clean up after.

At least my mom and step dad seem to be alright where they're at. I really hope they don't end up regretting moving from warm and dry and relatively safe Arizona.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Hurricanes are nature's way of taking a bunch of excess heat in the water and redistributing it into the atmosphere. Where it goes from there I have no idea.

Glad my folks live on the Gulf side of the state.

I let 'em know that if Trump builds a golden Trump tower on top of all that snow in Greenland and it heats up in the sun and melts all 10,000 feet of snow that their home is the first to be submerged when the Earth turns into Waterworld.

Maybe people will start taking that movie a little more seriously now.

By the numbers alone, Dorian is an impressive beast. It made landfall in the Bahamas with 185-mile-an-hour sustained winds, which tied the landfall record set by the Labor Day hurricane of 1935. Dorian’s winds also sped up by about 35 miles an hour over the space of just nine hours on Sunday; it’s the only storm of its caliber to ever intensify so quickly. In the Bahamas, people in Dorian’s path were told to expect 18 to 23 feet of storm surge; for reference, the Louisiana coast suffered 10 to 20 feet of surge during Katrina. Dorian was also forecast to dump 30 inches of rain on the Bahamas. The 2019 Atlantic hurricane season was originally forecast to be a relatively average one, and it had a slow start (and) until last week, this year’s accumulated cyclone energy—a measure of the combined strength and duration of all tropical storms and hurricanes—was below normal for the North Atlantic. Dorian has more than made up that deficit.

Some of the storm’s most frightening attributes, though, are on a par with recent trends. Dorian made 2019 the fourth year in a row that spawned at least one Category 5 hurricane; that’s the longest streak on record. Dorian’s rapid jump in wind speed is in line with the major storms of 2017 and 2018; Hurricane Maria, for example, jumped from a Category 1 storm to a Category 5 within 24 hours. And Dorian’s devastating stall over the Bahamas—the National Hurricane Center has listed the storm’s “present movement” as “stationary” since 5 p.m. yesterday—matches Harvey’s in 2017, Florence’s in 2018, and even Tropical Storm Barry’s earlier this year.

Each of these trends, in turn, can be traced back to climate change, and so is likely to get even more severe. A hurricane is more likely to have strong winds, and to rapidly intensify, if the waters it traverses are warm. And as temperatures rise worldwide, air will move more slowly, failing to push hurricanes around as speedily as it used to, which will lead to more stalled storms.

I have a bad feeling...There are hundreds dead, possibly thousands either dead now or dying

Ive seen aerial photos, satellite pics and it seems to show possible 50% maybe 60% of these islands destroyed during the peak storm surge

Seem it is still a protector region of the British Empire the Queen of England the head of State.

Grand Bahama - northernmost of the islands of the Bahamas, lying 103 kilometres
Population?: ?51,000 + people, biggest town /city ?Freeport
Abaco Islands lie in the northern Bahamas

The only positive is the island or islands seemed to have drained some of the Hurricanes power before it hits the USA

Dorian is one of only two Category 5 hurricanes to make landfall on the Abaco Islands, the other having occurred in 1932 and is the only such storm on record to have impacted Grand Bahama.

I hear the US Marines the US Navy Ships already moved their ships out to sea to avoid the storm, they are delivering food aid at the moment on some of the islands

The island seem to have taken a terrible blow

They were probably totally un-prepared for this hit
sanitation, lack of power, no medical supplies, disease and this will soon kill a lot of the young, elderly and needy

“Staggering” Death Toll Feared in Bahamas as Thousands Remain Missing After Hurricane Dorian

As Hurricane Dorian lashes North Carolina and continues its path north, the death toll in the Bahamas has risen to 30 people but expected to soar.

The island nation's Health Minister Duane Sands said the number of dead, quote, "Could be staggering." Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas as a Category 5 storm over the weekend, lingering for days and leaving nearly unimaginable destruction in its path.

This is hurricane survivor Ramond King describing the widespread devastation he witnessed on Abaco Islands, the worst-hit area in the Bahamas.

There were 13,000 sructure seriously damaged or destroyed. If there are 4 people per structure (probably an underestimate) you're looking at roughly 50,000 who may have had to survive without a roof over their heads. I hope they were mostly evacuated to safer places ... multi-story hotels maybe ... before the storm hit.

What shocked me was how HIGH the water was ... 20-25 feet, according to the government official videoing from his home. That's enough to swamp any one-story home in the USA to the peak of the roof. How do you escape from THAT? I mean, you can climb up into your attic, but then you'd have to chop a hole in the roof and crawl out onto the roof, and even then you could be be swept away by the wind and the waves. Kind of reminds me of Katrina, or the tsunami in Banda Aceh.

Bahamas Death Toll Rises As 70,000 Residents Struggle For Food And Shelter

Search and rescue teams in the Bahamas are scouring communities with cadaver dogs looking for both victims and survivors of Hurricane Dorian, which devastated Grand Bahama and the Abaco Islands in the strongest hurricane ever recorded to hit the archipelago nation, according to PBS.

The official death toll has risen to 43; thirty-five on Abaco Island and eight in Grand Bahama, and is expected to increase even more according to top officials. An estimated 70,000 people are now homeless between the two islands, according to the United Nations.

"We acknowledge that there are many missing and that the number of deaths is expected to significantly increase," said Prime Minister Hubert Minnis. "This is one of the stark realities we are facing in this hour of darkness."

On Saturday morning, several hundred people, many of them Haitian immigrants, waited at Abaco’s Marsh Harbour in hopes of leaving the disaster zone on vessels arriving with aid. Bahamian security forces were organizing evacuations on a landing craft. Other boats, including yachts and other private craft, were also helping to evacuate people. -PBS

"It was like an atomic bomb went off," said Sherrie Roberts, who was on the Abaco Islands when Dorian struck last week as a Category 5 storm according to CNN.

Now, the islands are facing a "humanitarian crisis" according to the Bahamian financial services ministry in a Friday statement, while Health Minister Duane Sands told Guardian Radio that the public should prepare for "unimaginable information about the death toll and the human suffering."

"When we were driving up, we could smell ... death," said CNN's Patrick Oppman, describing his trip into Bevans Town on Grand Bahama. Oppman added that the area is in ruins. "Every house, every structure, every life has been essentially destroyed in this area."

At present, efforts are underway to rescue evacuees by the hundreds - including on a cruise ship expected to arrive Saturday morning in Florida according to the report.

Search and rescue personnel who arrived with cadaver dogs on the Abaco Islands brought body bags and coolers to store human remains, said Joy Jibrilu, director general of the country's tourism and aviation ministry.

The smell of death lingered in the air in Marsh Harbour, CNN's Gary Tuchman said Friday has he toured hard-hit areas there. Workers also brought equipment to count the dead and to understand the scope of damage, Jibrilu said.

Ravaged infrastructure has impeded search and recovery efforts, as the islands remain a mess of splintered buildings, torn-off roofs, snapped power poles and scattered vehicles.

More than 1,550 evacuees are expected to arrive Saturday morning aboard the Grand Celebration humanitarian cruise ship in West Palm Beach, Florida, the Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line said on Facebook.

US Customs and Border Protection is working with the cruise line to process the passengers when they arrive.

The cruise line said it filled the ship with food, water, personal hygiene products, medical equipment, generators, volunteers, and first responders, and headed to the island to provide first aid. -CNN

According to the International Organization for Migration, a thousand plastic tarpaulins will be provided to replace roofs which were blown off of homes.

By Friday, the US Coast Guard had rescued over 230 people.

"The island of Abaco has been through and survived many hurricanes in the past. It didn't take long for us to rebound, but this is different from anything we've ever experienced. This hurricane will set us back for years to come," said Ted Curry - one of 300 people trying to catch a flight to the Capital of Nassau to stay with family.

Hey SIG.

Halifax seems to have taken the brunt of Dorian. Massive loss of power through out the city. Old growth trees pulled out of the ground. 1 Construction site at least in Halifax is going to fined for not tying down loose pieces of wood that were then swept away by the winds. Another site the news showed a crane coming down on a partially built building. An apartment building lost part of its roof.

Nova Scotia got over 150mm of rain by yesterday afternoon. And of course some of that landed on Prince Edward Island. Next target New Brunswick which by dinnertime out west was starting to feel it. The outer bands will make Newfoundland and Labrador.

I will see more on the news tonight.

Since it was downgraded I would say it was average for them.

I'd like to see the eastern part of Canada as well. And I agree best to go before storm season hits.
