So I watched China's 70th Anniversary parade. It was an historic event and I was interested to see what it would look like. I also watched Russia's Victory Day parade this year, and some interesting comparisons came to light.

Beijing is very smoggy compared to Moscow. It must have been very stagnant day in Beijing because all of those military vehicles idling created quite a cloud!

There were very few aerial views of China's parade. The few that there were showed that there are indeed trees in Beijing, but for some reason Beijing looks drab and colorless ... maybe it was the smog.

The parade was mostly military. My impression is that the Russian parade had a larger civilian component, esp the Immortal Regiment.

As a neophyte in military matters, it was interesting (to me) to try IDing the military hardware as it rolled/flew by (APC, tank, supply truck, various missile launchers etc) but for some strange reason the Chinese-made equipment didn't look as durable or well-made. If I figure out the difference, I'll post it.

It was clear that the marchers were all chosen to be within an inch height of each other, and they marched (and the band played) with extreme precision, heightening the impression of a precision machine at work. everyone looked, and moved, the same. In the Russian parade, there was a lot more diversity. Not only was the Russian reviewing stand filled with foreign dignitaries, the Russian troops themselves were ethnically far more diverse. The Russian parade goers were far more emotional; by contrast the Chinese parade seemed tightly disciplined and almost severe. The Chinese parade was by them and for them only.

It is clear from the Chinese parade that China is a nation proud of its culture and its nationhood. Altho China has not thought of itself as a military nation, preferring (I think) to focus on standard of living, production, and trade, this parade was a military statement and a possible warning to the west.

I don't know if it was a warning. Did you see their performance at the Olympics quite a few years back? I believe it was the opening ceremony...

They're crazy disciplined over there.

Also, 70th anniversary of what?

The start of Communist China. I think that was the reason for the parade and the hardware on display.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

According to the people who seem to know about these things - it was very important for all this to go off without a hitch. Any deviation or disruption would have been shameful. Once the ceremonies are concluded, Xi Jingping can address Hong Kong with a freer hand.

ETA: whether you see that as a good or bad thing, that's what was claimed.

SIX, thanks for the video of the Okympic opening ceremoeny, which I miised.

But in terms of discipline, that ain't got nothing on the National Day parade,

If you want to see precision marching, go to about 2:05

As somebody who grew up under an extremely overbearing home situation, I watch something like this and it makes me really sad.

It's a very impressive display, but at the same time, I couldn't imagine what life under Communist rule would be like.

As much as I constantly rag on the US Government about almost everything under the sun, I still feel like I won the life lottery by living here.

The parade had a half-dozen or so trumpeters playing a fanfare for Xi Jingping, but these weren't regular trumpets they were straight and long, the kind that angels play on Xmas cards. When they lifted those trumpets I doubt there was a degree difference in the angles.

A few thoughts went thru my head ...

Everyone was selected to be almost exactly the same height*: The marchers, the band, the choruses ... but if you got a billion people it's easier to find people who are exactly so many centimeters tall who're also talented and motivated. Lots to pick from!
* I know I mentioned this a few times already, but it was striking. In any NORMAL parade there are a few taller and a few shorter people. Not this one!

They must have been practicing this for a year. Or more. They probably felt it was a great honor to be chosen.

What the heck does this have to do with military preparedness??? Since when does marching in REALLY straight lines and lifting your feet to EXACTLY same height as your neighbor's win battles? For some reason, this extreme precision and discipline matters a lot to the Chinese, but in the grand scheme of things it's not only Non-functional it's DYSfunctional. Like their military hardware they just didn't look battle-worthy.

And it kinda feeds into the stereotype that the Chinese lack originality. After all, it seems that the Chinese value conformity ... EXTREME conformity ... above eveything else.
