Let's see ... Turkey has Russia's defense system and is no longer reliant on buying US arms; and has joined the SWIFT alternative, blunting any sanctions efforts.

OOPS. They've slipped the US leash.

I just checked: Turkey is bombing the Kurds, today. That would not be happening if Trump had told Turkey "NO! American troops are not obeying Turkey." But Trump will obey Turkey so that Turkey won't confiscate Trump's property in Turkey. If Trump had placed his property into a blind trust as every other President does, Trump would not have these conflicts of interest between what is best for Trump versus what is best for America's allies, the Kurds. The Trump Company would have to leave Turkey in order for there to be a blind trust, but Trump would not do it. Maybe he should have thought about it before running for President?

1kiki, nobody is impressed with your argument that Trump has to move the American Army at the orders of Turkey. I realize that Trump will lose what money he has in Turkey if he does not do as Turkey requests, but that is too bad for Trump. He should have gotten out of Turkey before he became President.

I think it's more a case of Trump being given a choice by a newly unshackled Erdogan: either ramp up US troop levels ASAP and engage in full-on war with Turkey (a NATO member), sacrifice them to superior numbers, or get out of the way.

1kiki, you noticed that Turkey took steps so that it cannot be pushed around by America. But Trump did not take steps so that he cannot be pushed around by Turkey. Trump left his money where Turkey could take it all away from him. That is impeachable stupidity by Trump.

Trump placed this particular person on this particular court to protect him from this particular subpoena. The dissenting opinion from the Trump judge was that Trump's tax returns stay secret until Trump is charged with tax evasion, but he can't be charged until tax returns are not secret and can be audited. The other two judges laughed at that Catch 22 nonsense from Trump's judge, the judge Trump owns. Trump has placed two of his judges on the Supreme Court. That might not be enough to protect Trump from the subpoena when this case goes to the Supreme Court.

I forgot to mention that Trump promised while campaigning to make these records known to all Americans, but once the moment came to make them known, Trump decided to sue to keep them secret.

Well I didn't forget he made the promise. I just didn't give a shit back then and I don't give a shit right now.

Unlike any other President in my lifetime, he's actually made good on a few promises, despite and probably in spite of the 24/7 onslaught against him over the last three years.

You are the craziest Republican I have ever known. Fortunately, at least 3/4 of all Americans would be very angry at Trump if he had cheated on his taxes to the amount of $50 million. Since he says he is worth $10 billion, it is not unlikely he has cheated to the tune of $5 billion. Fifty million or five billion, whichever, would be the end of him as President, even if you still vote for him. But who knows? Maybe he is honest? If he is, why the hell is he fighting so hard to keep secret tax returns that he promised to make public as soon as his audit is complete? LOL, 6ix.

Not true SLOPPY. Is the only way you can 'win' an argument is by lying?

I said I think SWIFT was the last remaining pressure point on Erdogan. And Turkey leaving SWIFT at the end of August was it slipping the last rein holding it in. I ALSO said that there were FAR WORSE provocations that Turkey could have pressured Trump over since 2016 - a US-backed assassination attempt in 2016, a US-backed coup attempt in 2017, and US sanctions and currency-war that torpedoed the Turkish lira in 2018 and crashed the country's economy. You've left completely unaddressed WHY Turkey would have not used all its options including personal blackmail for any of those FAR WORSE provocations. Yanno, you STRAWMANNED my argument. (ie. lied. again.)

I ALSO said I think Trump was given a courtesy call by Erdogan about Trump's very limited options - a mere 6 weeks after Turkey left SWIFT. And Trump's choices were:
1) Leave your roughly 50 US troops in place and take your chances.
2) Use your roughly 50 troops to fight Turkey, and have them obliterated
3) Get your roughly 50 troops out of the way.
4) Ramp up your entire military for full-on war with Turkey.

Quote:

Trump would have mentioned the threat of "full-on war with Turkey" sometime in the days after that Sunday night phone call from Turkey, if it were true.
Admitting those were the reasons for withdrawing the US fig-leaf force would have meant Trump admitting that he was out-maneuvered, and basically beaten on the geo-political field. That would have been very embarrassing for Trump.

He doesn't mind bellowing WAR!! against an already identified target, then backing down. It's harder to bellow WAR!! against a supposed NATO ally.
Quote:

Trump would NEVER mention that the actual threat was Trump losing his money in Turkey.
Trump has already endured billions in losses, and he's filed for various business bankruptcies 6 times. It's nothing to him.

UNLIKE YOU, Trump doesn't equate his success with money. What matters is being seen as a 'winner'.

Long post history here backing up my claims of not being a Republican. They predate the day you accidentally stumbled upon this place. Democrats just became gross since then. Unlike Democrats, however, there isn't a single time in the last 11 years that I've looked back fondly to the GWB years.

There are a lot of posts in the last 3 years that your buddies around here love to post about and say "see, even Republicans don't like Trump."

Well... no shit. That's why I voted for him.

Stop being so hyperbolic about things. Property taxes pay for all of the services that you're talking about. Nobody has figured out a way to get out of paying those. That's not at all what we're talking about here.

Jennifer Griffin of Fox News reports that Mr. Trump was supposed to tell Mr. Erdogan to stay north of the border. When the Turkish bully made his threats, Mr. Trump could have said that the U.S. military controls the air above the region and would respond to protect the Kurds and U.S. soldiers. Ms. Griffin reports that Mr. Trump instead “went off script” during the call and agreed to stay out of Turkey’s way.
www.wsj.com/articles/the-turk-and-the-president-11570834334

Trump sympathizers have offered unconvincing justifications for the president’s decision. Two scholars of the Middle East, Michael Doran and Michael A. Reynolds, suggested in the Wall Street Journal that the fault was really President Barack Obama’s for aligning with the Kurds in 2016 — despite the success of that strategy and the lack of any realistic alternatives. Journal columnist Walter Russell Mead rationalized Trump’s move because he is giving his “Jacksonian” (i.e., isolationist) followers what they want. The Jacksonians may get more than they bargained for, however, if Trump’s move leads to a resurgence of the Islamic State.

These attempts to reverse-engineer and thereby justify Trump’s decision fail not only because of the weakness of the arguments advanced on his behalf, but also because there is no reason to imagine that Trump’s move had anything to do with these ex post facto justifications.

We still don’t know why Trump acted so solicitously toward a Turkish dictator who has been pursuing an anti-Israel, anti-American and anti-democratic agenda. Trump himself admitted in 2015 that when it came to Turkey, “I have a little conflict of interest ‘cause I have a major, major building in Istanbul. … It’s called Trump Towers — two towers, instead of one, not the usual one, it’s two.” Might the revenue that Trump derives from the Trump Towers in Istanbul influence his decision to let Erdogan have his way? Trump’s demands that Ukraine and China provide him dirt on Joe Biden indicate that he has no scruples about subordinating public interest to self-interest. Perhaps he did so in this case as well.

Or maybe, just maybe, Trump simply didn’t think much before acting? That would be indicated by his casual dismissal of concerns that the Turkish invasion could lead to the freeing of Islamic State prisoners. “Well, they are going to be escaping to Europe, that’s where they want to go,” Trump said. As if it doesn’t matter whether there are terrorist attacks in Europe, despite all of the Americans living and visiting there — and as if there is no way that a terrorist could get from Europe to the United States.

It would probably be necessary to read the transcripts of Trump’s calls with Erdogan to have any clue about why he acted as he did. Until those become available, there is no need to give much credence to the lame rationales offered by Trump and his amen corner.

"A U.S. special forces member serving with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Syria said Turkey is inflicting atrocities as it invades northeastern Syria.

“I am ashamed for the first time in my career,” the unidentified soldier, who has been involved in the training of indigenous forces on multiple continents, told Fox News Wednesday.

“Turkey is not doing what it agreed to. It’s horrible,” the soldier added. “We met every single security agreement. The Kurds met every single agreement [with the Turks]. There was no threat to the Turks — none — from this side of the border.”

SECONDRATE ... you can't withdraw from a war unless you actually WITHDRAW. Committing more troops or more planes or more actions because you want to withdraw on your terms is what keeps a war going even tho you've been defeated.

NIXON withdrew troops from Vietnam and it was messy ... the USA embassy being overrun, helicopters lifting off the last few friendly South Vietnamese that they could evacuate, leaving tens of thousands ... if not more ... "allies" on the ground and at risk but that's what defeat looks like. And what was the alternative? MORE undeclared Vietnam War?

We aren't in Syria to fight ISIL and al Qaeda and the thirty one flavors of jihad. If that was our real goal we would have stopped sending jihadists arms. We would have bombed the jihadi oil convoys ... yanno, the ones we couldn't find with both hands and a flashlight for three years ... the ones the Russians found and bombed straightaway as soon as they entered the war. If fighting jihadis was our REAL goal, we would be in a position to tell Syria, and Russia ... Look, we know you don't want Turkey invading Syria either, so we'll hold the line until you guys can take over.

Our involvement in every one of our Mideast wars is going to end this way: In confusion, recriminations, and abandoned proxies. The government of Kabul in Afghanistan is going to feel abandoned. So are the few forces that still fight with us in Iraq. Libya is going to be overtaken by whoever it is that takes it over (Haftar maybe) and the government of Yemen (the one that let Obama secretly drone its people) is going to have to reach some kind of peace agreement with the Houthis.

THAT'S WHAT DEFEAT LOOKS LIKE.

But as I asked before: WHAT'S YOUR ALERNATIVE? MOAR WAR?

We failed to implement to Powell Doctrine on every single point, the one that Colin Powell developed after studying our defeat in Vietnam:

*Is a vital national security interest threatened?
*Do we have a clear attainable objective?
*Have the risks and costs been fully and frankly analyzed?
*Have all other non-violent policy means been fully exhausted?
*Is there a plausible exit strategy to avoid endless entanglement?
*Have the consequences of our action been fully considered?
*Is the action supported by the American people?
*Do we have genuine broad international support?

This whole Mideast debacle reminds me of Vietnam but on a much larger scale. Fighting because of WMD? "Freedon"? "Fight them there so we don't have to fight them here"? Can't stop now so let's throw good money after bad?

The same kind of mushy reasons that I heard for Vietnam. NONE of them make sense.

Nobody likes being defeated, but we've been defeated. We haven't achieved ... whatever it was we hoped to achieve ... installing Saudi/Israeli/American-friendly governments that would let us "develop" their gas and oil and would commit to using the petrodollar, most likely. Failing that, create a ring of failed states in the region which couldn't threaten anyone. Well, power vacuums don't last long, so here we are.

We were defeated in Afghanistan at least 12 years ago, and in Iraq at least 10 years ago, and we were defeated in Syria 4 years ago. THAT'S the hard pill to swallow.

In the video the answer Cenk gave was that the President of Turkey would throw every piece of dirt he had on Trump at Trump if Trump reversed himself on allowing an invasion of Syria. It would be interesting if Trump's Republican colleagues did get him to reverse himself. Then we might find out what the President of Turkey said to Trump during that infamous Sunday night phone call in order to persuade Trump to stab America's allies, the Kurds, in the back.

If the GOP Senators do get Trump to retract the permission he gave to the President of Turkey to invade Syria, and then Turkey confiscates Trump's property, it would strongly suggest that Trump gave the permission in the first place mainly to protect his property. From that, his impeachment will follow.

SECONDRATE, pushing crazy conspiracy theories.

Trump has been promising for years to pull our troops out of the Mideast. Why are you concocting an elaborate conspiracy theory when the reason for this action is as plain as day? It's like Trump's promise to make nice with Russia (which has ALSO been stymied by the deep state)... it's not like he campaigned on one platform and switched to another (like Obama did). If people didn't know what Trump's foreign policy intentions were when they voted, it's because they weren't paying attention.

NO IT'S NOT A SURPRISE.

We have an agreement with Saudi Arabia, it's called the petrodollar agreement. In return for Saudi Arabia promising to require dollars for oil and recycling those dollars into our Treasuries, we promised to protect Saudi Arabia militarily.

That agreement was made some time around 1973, so if this is a surprise to you, you'v had your head stuck in the sand for a loooong time.

We have accommodated the Saudis in all kinds of ways ever since, from overlloking their funding of radical madrassas all over the Mideast and N Africa, spreading their wahhabist ideology, to hiding and protecting the Saudi funders and abbetors of the 9-11 attacks to protecting the petrodollar by attacking any oil-producing nation that threatened to go off the petrodollar (Iraq, Libya) to aiding and abetting the Saudis in their wars of choice (Yemen, Syria, Iran).

Putting troops in Saudi Arabia is just pulling back to the original scope of the agreement: protect Saudi Arabia (and its oil infrastructure). Now, if Turmp would only end our involvement in Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq we'd be better off.*

*Or, maybe not. Make the case for continuing our wars there. Show me how we are maintaining some sort of vital security ithat can't be maintained any other way. I'm all ears, ready to hear some sort of countervailing argument.

Signym, you went way overboard with your description of the petrodollar. It is as if you have an agenda to explain away Trump's incredibly bad decisions. Was it the petrodollar that forced Trump to withdraw from Obama's peace agreement with Iran, a withdrawal that started a new round of crisis with Iran for the benefit of Saudi Arabia? Or was Trump just plain old stupid when he withdrew?

There is something fundamentally wrong with how Americans solve crime. If the criminal won't confess, the system can't solve the crime. There is a sociopath who went on a 40 year murder spree. Only now, when the old fool is talking about his exploits, will the system be able to solve 96 murders. But if the system would look at how the man lived his life during those 40 years, the system would not have waited until he was fat, old, slow and stupid to catch him. Trump is getting fat, old, slow and stupid. The system might catch him, too, but there were many instances in his past that indicated he is a sociopath who should have been locked up.

They could catch more if they really did audited the rich more. The money recovered would more than pay for the added staffs. I've heard there would be billions more in taxes paid.

Trump's favorite excuse is that his tax returns are still being "audited". I've never been audited, but other wealthy people I know have contempt for the poor quality of auditing done by the IRS. If you should get caught, your lawyers can negotiate the price to be paid. The amount of cheating is about $600 billion in lost taxes collected per year, while the total budget to run the IRS is about $11.7 billion. The GOP keeps lower the IRS budget, year after year, which opens more and more opportunities to cheat without fear of ever being audited by a competent forensic accountant.

I forgot to mention that you can pay your tax lawyers a million to stall the IRS in the Courts. The IRS will cut your bill by $10 million just so that your lawyers will stop filing writ after writ, appeal after appeal, year after year, delay after delay. Trump is aware of the same dynamic of stalling. He has used it many times in the past as a private citizen and he continues as President. Only if the IRS had a bigger budget could it afford a bigger legal staff to keep fighting tax cheaters like Trump.
