But I guess it's just a little thing.

Trump before Sondland’s testimony: “He’s a great American.” Trump after: “This is not a man I know well.”
Sondland, who gave $1 million to Trump’s campaign, just got the “coffee boy” treatment.

Last month, President Donald Trump described Gordon Sondland, the US ambassador to the European Union, as “a really good man and great American” in a tweet. Trump said that he would not let Sondland testify before impeachment investigators about the administration’s dealings with Ukraine.

Sondland defied Trump. On Wednesday, Sondland testified. And Trump suddenly barely knows the guy.

Sondland delivered a bombshell opening statement in which he implicated everyone from Trump to Rudy Giuliani to Vice President Mike Pence to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a “quid pro quo.” He testified he believed White House officials wouldn’t allow a state visit and hundreds of millions of dollars of military aid would be withheld until Ukrainian officials delivered “a public statement announcing investigations of the 2016 election/DNC server and Burisma.”

During the afternoon session, Sondland undercut the president’s claim about not knowing him that well by testifying that he and Trump have spoken about 20 times.

Trump wasn’t alone in quickly trying to distance himself from Sondland. Vice President Mike Pence responded to his testimony in the same way.

What I find ridiculous is that the people here who were all hot to have a sitting President (Obama) use foreign governments (Britain, Ukraine, Australia) investigate* a candidate (Trump) are now suddenly all hot to run in the other direction. They're outraged - OUTRAGED, I tell you! - that Trump would do such a thing!

Crybabies.

* Yanno, I have no problems with the idea of investigating candidates. I think they should ALL be put thru the wringer. It should be part of the territory of running for office, and maybe if it happened more often we wouldn't have such a bunch of crooked politicians siphoning money into their pockets via a foreign money-laundering operation. What I object to is when the deep state MAKES SHIT UP about a candidate, tries to ENTRAP his/her campaign staffers, engages in PROECUTORIAL MISCONDUCT, and LIES TO THE COURTS (INCLUDING THE FISA COURT).

Lev Parnas Helped Rep. Devin Nunes’ Investigations

Lev Parnas, an indicted associate of Rudy Giuliani, helped arrange meetings and calls in Europe for Rep. Devin Nunes in 2018, Parnas’ lawyer Ed MacMahon told The Daily Beast.

Nunes aide Derek Harvey participated in the meetings, the lawyer said, which were arranged to help Nunes’ investigative work. MacMahon didn’t specify what those investigations entailed.

Nunes is the top Republican on the House committee handling the impeachment hearings—hearings where Parnas’s name has repeatedly come up.

Crybabies.

A pillar of the Republican defense of President Trump during the impeachment inquiry has been that he had good reason to believe that Ukraine intervened against him during the 2016 presidential election — and that he therefore was justified in demanding that the new Ukrainian government investigate. That made the testimony Thursday of Fiona Hill, who served Mr. Trump as the National Security Council’s senior director for Europe and Russia for more than two years, particularly important. Ms. Hill, one of the nation’s top authorities on the regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin, warned that the Ukraine intervention narrative was not only “fictional” but also potentially damaging to U.S. national security.

U.S. intelligence agencies, the Senate Intelligence Committee and former special counsel Robert S. Mueller III have all found that Russia meddled in the 2016 election in support of Mr. Trump. But the president and some of his more fanatical followers, such as Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), have clung to the idea that the intervention came from Ukraine, and that it was aimed against Mr. Trump. Mr. Putin himself has echoed the Republican arguments. “Thank God no one is accusing us of interfering in the U.S. elections anymore,” he said Wednesday. “Now they’re accusing Ukraine.”

This false narrative, Ms. Hill bluntly declared, “has been perpetrated and propagated by the Russian security services themselves.” It is dangerous not only because it clouds the truth of what happened in 2016. It has also had the effect of weakening and politicizing U.S. support for Ukraine, which Russia still seeks to dominate. It facilitates what Ms. Hill said is Russia’s intention to intervene in the 2020 election.

Trump told this story, and even Fox News had doubts:

Today, Trump pushed a debunked conspiracy the day after Fiona Hill described it as Russian disinformation.

On Thursday, former National Security Council official Fiona Hill testified to impeachment investigators that the debunked conspiracy theory about Ukraine interfering in the 2016 election to hurt President Donald Trump is “a fictional narrative that has been perpetrated and propagated by the Russian security services themselves.”

On Friday, President Trump called in to Fox & Friends and demonstrated once again that he has no qualms echoing Kremlin talking points.

During a meandering 45-minute interview with his favorite television show, Trump deflected from questions about Hill’s testimony by conspiracy-mongering about Ukraine.

“A lot of it had to do, they say, with Ukraine,” Trump said. “They have the server, right? From the DNC ... they gave the server to CrowdStrike — or whatever it’s called — which is a company owned by a very wealthy Ukrainian, and I still want to see that server. You know, the FBI has never gotten that server. That’s a big part of this whole thing. Why did they give it to a Ukrainian company?”

Even host Steve Doocy seemed somewhat taken aback by Trump’s claims and responded by asking him, “Are you sure they did that? Are you sure they gave it to Ukraine?”

Trump’s sourcing was weak, to put it mildly.

“Well, that’s what the word is,” he said.

Trump’s former homeland security adviser, Tom Bossert, has acknowledged that Trump’s notions about CrowdStrike are “completely debunked.”

Quote:

Impeachment Circus - Today's Bombshell Is Another Dud

The impeachment circus continued today with a refreshingly candid opening statement from Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the EU. Sondland was involved in diplomatic efforts in Ukraine. Instead of stonewalling Sondland just let it all out:

Gordon D. Sondland testified that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signed off on the pressure campaign, and that he told Vice President Mike Pence about an apparent link between military aid for Ukraine and investigations of Democrats. Mr. Sondland confirmed there was a “clear quid pro quo” for a White House meeting between President Trump and Ukraine’s president. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/20/us/politics/impeachment-hearings.ht
ml

The anti-Trump media see this as another "bombshell" that will hurt him.

But it is more likely that Sondland's testimony will help President Trump and those involved on his side.

The President of the United States thought it to be in the interest of the United States to press Ukraine's government into publicly announcing investigations into two issues:

* The successful meddling by Ukrainian officials in the 2016 U.S. election.
* The evident intervention by then Vice President Biden into Ukrainian politics to the benefit of the owner of a company that paid his son more than $50,000 per month.

Sondland and other U.S. officials were negotiating with the Ukrainians about these demands. There were two potential points that they could use to pressure the Ukrainians into announcing investigations:

* The Ukrainian request for a visit by President Zelensky to the White House.
* The Ukrainian desire to receive military aid that Congress had allocated for that purpose.

It is not clear at all that Trump wanted those issues to be used to pressure Ukraine. Trump never told Sondland that these issues were connected:

Aaron Maté @aaronjmate - 15:58 UTC · Nov 20, 2019:

Sondland's testimony is not as damning as it's being portrayed. He says Trump never told him that money for US weapons ("security assistance") was conditioned on investigations. Sondland says that such a condition is what he came to believe based on his own inference.
His interpretation may well be correct (I'd bet it was). But his own interpretation is not direct evidence -- it's an interpretation. Given he's the star witness who spoke to Trump -- & he says Trump never even mentioned "security assistance" -- it's actually an evidentiary hole.
Sondland: "I've never heard from Trump that the aid was conditioned on the investigations." Also says Trump never mentioned “security assistance.” This is the star witness who spoke to Trump, & who relayed conditions to Ukraine — which he now says was based on his interpretation.
Sondland: “President Trump never told me directly that the aid was conditioned on the meetings. The only thing we got directly from Guiliani was that the Burisma and 2016 elections were conditioned on the White House meeting. The aid was my own personal, you know, guess.”

The negotiators, including Sondland, presumed that the demands and pressure points were linked. But Trump had never said so.

The negotiations around the Ukraine issues were going slow. It was not clear to the negotiators what Trump actually wanted. Sondland said that at one point he called up Trump and asked an open questions: "What do you want from Ukraine?".

According to Sondland Trump responded: "I want nothing. I want nothing. I want no quid pro quo. Tell Zelensky to do the right thing."

Trump is a crook. It is fair to presume that he wanted his aides to use all potential pressure points to deliver the desired results from the Ukrainians. But Trump is also a smart enough crook to never say that.

Today he read the above quote from Sondland's testimony to the press. Some photographer took a picture of his notes.
...

For two years the Democrats insisted on investigating alleged Russian interference in the U.S. election. What is wrong with Trump requesting an investigation into well documented Ukrainian interference?

Ukrainian corruption has been a concern of several administrations. What is wrong with Trump asking the Ukrainians to investigate a well known case that may have involved U.S. officials?

The U.S. is not a welfare organization. Official political White House meetings with the president are only granted if the U.S. hopes that it is to its advantage. Aid or loans are only granted by the U.S. when it is to its own advantage. The granting or withholding of such items are part of most international deals, as are threats. They are part of political deals between nations, not personal bribery.

It is beyond me why the Democrats think they can bring Trump down over this.

Even Trump doesn't know his exact bottom line. Trump has been showing signs of early dementia for a few years now. Listen to his most recent 45 minute rant on Fox and Friends - it's all over the place. The giant sharpie notes from a recent outdoor presser are a giveaway as well. Being prone to such outlandish conspiracies - Ukraine meddled in 2016 and has the DNC server - even more signs. If Trump was really falling apart, don't you think the deep state would have played that card dozens of times over ... held hearings about it already?

In thinking about this, it seems that while the deep state has had a hard time entrapping Trump, Hillary's shtick was destroying or hiding evidence. Not just the 33,000 emails that she bleach-bitted ...Like, with a cloth?... but also the Whitewater boxed evidence that mysteriously disappeared the same time that Vince Foster committed "suicide" and then mysteriously reappeared after the investigation was over. Obama's shtick was just "lie and hide everything" with the cooperation of the deep state. NONE of these people are clean.

And if you're voting for President because you think someone is pure, boy have YOU got growing-up to do! The reality is that the more expensive it is to run for office, the more likely it is that Dem Repub candidates will owe some very wealthy people SOMEthing.

Also, don't vote for Prez on a domestic agenda. The Prez really doesn't control that, that's Congress. The purview of the Prez is foreign policy and military matters. yanno, wake up and smell the coffee sometime.

More Quid Pro Quo: Trump Gives U.S. Business the Ukraine Treatment

Support him if you want a tariff break.

www.nytimes.com/2019/11/25/opinion/trump-apple.html

The story that has emerged in the impeachment hearings is one of extortion and bribery. Donald Trump withheld crucial aid — aid Ukraine needed to defend itself against Russian aggression — and refused to release it unless Ukraine publicly said it was investigating one of his political rivals. Even Republicans understand this; they just think it’s O.K.

And remember, the Ukraine scandal made it into the public eye only because a single whistle-blower set an investigation in motion. I know I’m not alone in wondering how many other comparable scandals haven’t come to light.

Nor need these scandals involve foreign governments. What I haven’t seen pointed out is that Trump is quietly applying a Ukraine-type extortion-and-bribery strategy to U.S. corporations. Many businesses are being threatened with policies that would hurt their bottom lines — especially, but not only, tariffs on imported goods crucial to their operations. But they are also being offered the possibility of exemptions from these policies.

And the implicit quid pro quo for such exemptions is that corporations support Donald Trump, or at least refrain from criticizing his actions.

Consider, for example, what happened last week, when Trump toured an Apple manufacturing plant together with Tim Cook, Apple’s C.E.O. Trump used the occasion to make a political speech, attacking impeachment proceedings and falsely claiming that Nancy Pelosi has “closed Congress.” He also asserted that the plant, which has been operating since 2013, had just opened.

And Cook, far from correcting these falsehoods, expressed support, declaring that America has the “strongest economy in the world.”

Cook’s incentive to play along was obvious. Apple assembles many of its products in China; it’s seeking exemptions from Trump’s China tariffs. And there’s every reason to believe that the allocation of such exemptions is driven by politics, not the national interest.

For example, in 2018 a company owned by Oleg Deripaska — an oligarch close to Vladimir Putin, who is supposed to be under U.S. sanctions for activities that include interference in foreign elections — received a waiver from aluminum tariffs. The waiver was withdrawn only after Democrats in Congress noticed it, with the Commerce Department claiming that it had been granted as a result of a “clerical error.” Uh-huh.

By the way, if you’re wondering why the Trump administration has the power to play favorites, it’s because U.S. trade law gives the president a lot of discretion in setting tariffs. The purpose of that discretion was to diminish the power of special interests in Congress, based on the assumption that the president would be better at serving the national interest. But then came Trump.

And tariff policy isn’t the only area in which the administration seems to be using its power to punish corporations if they don’t show proper political fealty.

Recently the Pentagon granted the huge Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure contract for cloud computing (yes, JEDI) to Microsoft, shocking observers who expected it to go to Amazon. Amazon is challenging the decision, claiming that it was punishment for critical reporting in The Washington Post, now owned by Jeff Bezos — a claim that is entirely plausible, given Trump’s own repeated declarations that he was going to give Bezos “problems.”

Trump officials claim, of course, that the decision process was squeaky-clean, based on expert judgment untainted by any political influence. But seriously, is anything clean in this administration? Are we really supposed to accept on faith that people who are willing to politicize weather forecasts were totally hands-off when it came to awarding a huge, lucrative contract to a company Trump considers an enemy?

When I and others point out the ways in which Trump is using crony capitalism to lock in political advantage, we tend to get two kinds of pushback. First, we’re told that we shouldn’t feel sympathy for wealthy corporations. Second, we’re told that progressive Democrats also criticize some corporations, like Facebook, and have proposed a crackdown on some kinds of corporate behavior. So what’s the difference?

Well, these critiques (willfully, one suspects) miss the point. What progressives are proposing are rules for corporate behavior that would apply equally to all companies, not be imposed selectively on corporations depending on their political orientation.

And the trouble with Trump’s selective doling out of punishment isn’t the harm it inflicts on corporations, it’s the incentives this regime creates for political sycophancy. American voters and American democracy, not Apple and Amazon — which are, as it happens, notorious examples of tax avoidance — are the victims we care about.

Put it this way: By using his political power to punish businesses that don’t support him while rewarding those that do, Trump is taking us along the same path already followed by countries like Hungary, which remains a democracy on paper but has become a one-party authoritarian state in practice. And we’re already much further down that road than many people realize.

No. It's in the article Second posted.

It's very relevant to show how Democrats in 2019 are pro war, pro censorship and pro large business monopolies.

You know who among you isn't? AOC. You'll notice nobody has heard a peep from her in quite a while now. Anything she had to say about Bezos or Amazon would not be welcome with the current narrative they're trying to push.

Only time will tell if that's a winning strategy for them. Especially since the impeachment will go nowhere.

What happened is that Amazon was the low bidder, but Trump hates Amazon because its CEO owns the Washington Post, which Trump also hates, so Trump gave IBM, the high bidder, the contract. There was some sneakiness where the technicalities of IBM pricing are adjusted to an amount just below what Amazon bid. And all the details are kept sealed, at least until Congress starts subpoenaing those bids and adjustments. Obviously, Trump will fight Congress in court to prevent those documents becoming known, because then we'd have more proof Trump is crooked, as is IBM.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

So far I've listened to the entire testimonies of Taylor and Kent (sounds like a men's clothing store, doesn't it), Yovanovitch, and Williams and Vindman.

As I mentioned earlier, neither Taylor nor Kent ever heard anything directly about anything from anybody. And I have NO idea why Yovanovitch was even in the process. She was even less involved than Taylor and Kent. Listening to all that testimony was a lot of hours completely wasted.

Both Williams and Vindman were direct witnesses to the July 25, 2019 phone call in question. Both recall hearing 'Burisma' in the conversation, but oddly, they recall it being in different places in the call. Well, eyewitness - or in this case, earwitness - testimony isn't all it's cracked up to be. As I learned from the PBS NewsHour 5 separate people listen in to the calls and are transcribing furiously. They later get together and compare notes to synthesize a complete text. Then others review it, including in this case Vindman, who felt that the omission of the name wasn't a critical problem. He called the released phone call text correct.

Williams characterized Trump's request for a favor was unusual and inappropriate, but not culpable or criminal. Vindman felt it was a demand despite all the modifying phrases like 'favor', 'ask', 'if you could', and so on. His interpretation was based on his military experience of leader to subordinate, and apparently he couldn't - or didn't - adjust for the fact that the phone call was between two civilian presidents.

So, a few things I've observed do far

1) The closed door testimonies are dress rehearsals that the democrats are running before they trot out their dog and pony show. This is especially apparent in the smooth, well-rehearsed testimony of the witnesses when answering the democrats' questions, and the stumbling the witnesses sometimes display when getting unanticipated republican questions.

2) It's quite obvious that the republicans have had zero opportunity to either call witnesses of their own, or to elicit testimony to their own lines of inquiry.

3) Apparently there are only *3* witnesses in this whole parade who heard the actual call. Since by now I've already heard 2, unless someone new and different blows this process out of the water, there's no 'there' there.

4) Every single one of the witnesses, and many of the democrats, admonish that Trump's request of Zelensky was inappropriate because a government shouldn't pursue politically motivated investigations. Always said without a trace of irony or self-recognition.

Trump already manipulated them into putting all of this on the fast track a year before the election occurred.

He's going to force them to either cancel the whole thing or to put it to the Senate where it will be struck down immediately, long before Trump even debates somebody one on one for the first time. I'm hoping the Senate doesn't do that though. I want them to drag it out for the next year, all the way up until the election. Republicans will be able to get all of their own witnesses at that point and the ball will be in their court.

Trump's already said that he wants to testify. lol

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Without getting into the strategy of all this - I'm going to continue on some more.

I've listened almost entirely now to 2 additional 'witnesses' - Volker (I was out of the loop) and Morrison (I was concerned about optics). Morrison was another witness who heard the phone call directly, and he was concerned about the optics of the call, and its POLITICAL repercussions. He testified he had no serious misgivings about its legality. If he's indeed the third and final earwitness to the call, once again, there appears to be no 'there' there. Volker said that he thought a statement by Ukraine that it was investigating corruption, specifically Burisma and Biden, would have been helpful to allaying Trump's fears of Ukraine corruption. (In the testimony, Ukraine was referred to more than once by more than one person as the most corrupt country on the planet.)

EVERY SINGLE witness so far has said that Ukraine is 'vital' to US national security regarding RUSSIA, though they've been extremely short on the specifics. Volker I think summed it up best in all its idiocy when he said "The United States aids Ukraine and her people, so they can fight Russia over there and we don't have to fight Russia here." Do you think the Russians are going to be marching across the Bering Strait, Mr Volker? Exactly what are you imagining?

The OTHER thing I got out of EVERY SINGLE WITNESS is that they could be reading a script from the Cold War. (And that many of them have extreme personal and family antipathies to Russia.) Russia is THE big bad enemy trying to take over the world. And they all seem to be reading from the same script when it comes to POLICY - there's an interagency harmonization process to make sure everyone's going in the same direction. But that set of dictats they refer to is - as they put it - well-established ... years in the past. Nobody seems to have given a thought to the idea that Trump's policy might not be THEIR preferred, accustomed policy. No wonder they've been acting like a fifth column when it comes to Trump's policies.

And finally - NO ONE YET has testified that they heard Trump say I want this investigation or ... whatever. The WH meeting doesn't happen. The military funds don't get released. Or something. It's always ... Rudy said that Trump ... Sondland said that Trump ... Somebody said that somebody said that Trump ...

Where's the beef?
