As far as I can tell, security forces have set up a defensive phalanx around public buildings.

They are NOT chasing protesters around the streets of Portland, kettling them and rounding them up en masse.

And WHY have they set up these defensive positions/

Because of night after night of attacks against the buildings ranging from vandalism (graffitti) to more serious attempts to set fires, and attacks on Portland PD itself.

Now, REAVERBOT CLAIMS that these Federal officers are picking people up off the street without warrant.

How would he possibly know? I've seen arrests IRL, Nobody is waving a hardcopy arrest warrant in the air. Neither it nor I would know from watching any arrest whether there was a warrant or not. You would have to follow the arrestee to detention and check up in the booking sheet why they were arrested. Has anyone done that?

REAVERBOT claims aggression against "peaceful" protesters. But IMHO if you mix yourself in with violent agitators and provocateurs who have been attacking buildings and local PD,and approach a defensive line, well, that's just stupid. When I look at who is "aggressing" the first thing I do is look at who approaches who. The static person is not the aggressor.

REAVERBOT also claims that the Federal officers are operating outside of their jurisdiction and therefore "lawlessly". Not true. They are within their juridiction and therefore are operating under relevant rules and chain of command.

Then, based on a lot of hot air and hyperbole, REAVERBOT calls for revolution.

Sounds not only stupid, it sounds like treason.

*****

I think, if there were real reporters out there, someone should investigate ALL of these claims. Ask witnesses to see if people really were taken off the street, Try and find out the indenties of the arrestees, if any. Where are they presumably being detained? What were they taken into custody for? Are they illegal aliens? Were they caught on camera wielding lasers, or throwing fireworks, or attacking police officers? Were they just innocent protestors pulled off the street at random? Did this actually even happen? (There are no specifics in these stories, AFAIK.)

Look at the arrest records of local PD: how many people have been arrested, and where were they arrested? At the contact line around the Federal Courthouse? Someplace else?

Who is in charge of the Federal officers? What rules are they following? What charges are they empowered to levy?

In any case, I think there is already a formal investigation going on. I await the results.

Peacefully reaver. Those on the left who believe it's time to do an end run around our democratic institutions, are, wacko sicko's like those on the Trump spectrum you and I complain about.

No shit. If you think it's time for violence we part company now. So far the system is holding and will recover. It will be better and stronger than ever because of recent lessons learned. Protecting and yes, improving those institutions is what I'm about.

Of course.

IF FEDERAL AGENTS COMMIT CRIMES THEN THEY SHOULD BE CHARGED.

BUT SO FAR, ALL I SEE IS VAPORWARE: A LOT OF ALLEGATIONS, NO EVIDENCE.

All of the videos of "police violence" in Portland shows PEOPLE APPROACHING THE CONTACT LINE. Not the other way around. The officers are surrounding Federal property. AFAIK they haven't been chasing protesters thru the streets of Portland.

Hey, I've seen protests where the police were chasing protestors thru the streets, billy-clubbing as they went, shooting real live rounds (Kent State) as well as "less lethal" rounds and tear gas canisters directly at people's heads. I've seen protesters kettled and rounded up en masse and herded into waiting buses. I've seen crowd control police pick out people at random from a group of protesters for a real beat-down. Dragging people by their hair. Spraying a sitting, restrained group of protesters straight in the face with tear gas.

Should be punished.

Is this happening in Portland?

I wonder which date the Gov, Mayor, etc decided to tell Law Enforcement to go away, stop interfering with our vandalizing and anarchy, our assault on Federal property and Law Enforcement officers and agents.

The Doxxers and laser wielders and guns and hammer wielding anarchists should all be thrown in the dungeon.

Holy shit! They used paint filled balloons! Fuggin' run for the hills! Doomsday is upon us!

The phrase "violent anarchist" is used 70 times in the list and yet "injured" only twice. (and claims of assault need to be verified since the source is biased.)

Looking more closely, many of these are for the inhuman and horrifying crimes of:

"Violent anarchists attempted to damage the Hatfield Courthouse by throwing objects at it and spray painting it."

"Violent anarchists continued to assault law enforcement officers with lasers, slingshots and fireworks."
Nooooo! Not slingshots!

Be honest, JSF - you didn't really give a shit about Portland anyway, do you?

MEANWHILE - roughly 1,000 Americans are dying every day from Trump's shit hole, zero "leadership." We'd be much safer with the violent anarchists running things.

But, people are spray painting public buildings, so priorities! (f*cking idiots)

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

For whatever reason, Portland has become the turf on which a proxy battle is being fought by infiltrating groups with various agendas: Antifa, CHAZ, BLM, Boogaloo Boyz, 'large money political donors', and so forth.

And at the moment, the only voices that are being heard are the loudest and most violent, who are ALL pretending to represent the best interests of the people there.

Now, I'm sure there've been plenty of polls asking the citizens at large what they want for their own city, but nobody is publishing them. What DO Portlandians themselves want for their home of Portland? I dunno. Do you?

As to the use of USBP, as I posted AND LINKED above, the USBP 100mi generous area of authority has caused heartburn for both the left and right at various times. But there it still is, ready to be invoked.

From REAVERBOT'S link

Quote:

There will be time to sort out the legalities of the federal government’s actions. The attorney general of Oregon has filed suit against various federal agencies and officers involved in one arrest, arguing, “Ordinarily, a person ... who is confronted by anonymous men in military-type fatigues and ordered into an unmarked van can reasonably assume that he is being kidnapped and is the victim of a crime.” The American Civil Liberties Union has also sued the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Marshals Service. The chairs of three House committees have requested an internal DHS investigation of the matter. Between these varied proceedings, the Trump administration will have to answer legal questions like whether it’s really okay for unidentified federal officers and agents to patrol streets, and whether an agency whose mission is to patrol the border is properly used without training for crowd control. The administration will also have to justify the propriety of the individual arrests both in any prosecutions of those detained and in any civil suits filed.

But let’s leave the legalities aside for now.

Why would an author, who is hand-wringing about "rule of law", want to set aside discussion of legality?

Probably because author has run down the legalities as well, and has a pretty good suspicion that what DHS is purported to have done IS ENTIRELY LEGAL.

Indeed, from the same link...
Quote:

The existence of the department’s authority to protect federal property is uncontroversial. The federal government has the power to defend federal buildings and facilities from civil unrest, and a variety of federal laws protect federal property from attack and vandalism and federal officials from interference with their discharge of the government’s business.

I can't stress enough that an arrest is an arrest, whether it's from uniformed police in a marked car, plainclothes officers in an unmarked car, or officers in fatigues in an unmarked van.

They aren't waving arrest warrants in the air, so nobody knows whether there is a warrant or not. You're read your rights and shoved into a vehicle. You're taken to some sort of detention center and booked. You can be held for 48 hours without charges. You can call your lawyer.

From the same link

Quote:

While this authority certainly extends to the power to investigate federal crimes and arrest those suspected of them, it is not some general authority to patrol the downtowns of major cities and pick up and detain protesters merely because a federal building may be in the neighborhood.
If someone is arrested and charged, the charges won't read "Because s/he was in the neighborhood of a federal building". DHS apparently has it's own intelligence, there should be specific charges attached.

But nobody seems to know who was arrested or what for. There are no names attached to the stories. By now, the process has unfolded and the person(s) have been charged or released. The person's lawyer would have made the arrest and charges public if they felt it beneficial for their client, and any person who was released is free to go to the media.

If that's not what has happened, then it deserves some serious charges against those who made the arrests, because they didn't follow procedure. But the rest is all optics.

*****

If people don't like the laws, the CHANGE THE LAWS. These laws are made and passed by Congress and State Legislatures and reviewed by the courts.

MAYBE NEXT TIME PEOPLE WILL PAY MORE ATTENTION WHEN LAWS LIKE THE SO-CALLED "PATRIOT ACT" ARE PASSED.

Wolf told Fox News host Martha MacCallum on Tuesday night. “Attacking federal police officers–law enforcement officers–which they have done for 52 nights in a row is a federal crime. So, the Department, because we don’t have that local support, that local law enforcement support, we are having to go out and proactively arrest individuals and we need to do that because we need to hold them accountable.”

Anticipatory arrests, of course, are prohibited under the U.S. Constitution.

The NRA spent decades scaring Americans into buying their products to use if the government ever sent "jack-booted thugs" to "attack, harass, intimidate law-abiding citizens" and "take away our constitutional rights."

OK, NRA. Now that it's happening across the US, are you saying it's go time?

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2013/01/two-decades-wayne

The NRA has also spent decades claiming that nobody to the left of Pinochet is "law-abiding" so I wouldn't hold your breath.

I mean, just read the rhetoric these mouth-breathing wing nuts are using. BLM protesters are "terrorists", "thugs", "insurgents". It's all there in the conservative subs and all over orange man's twit feed. They've literally stated that people protesting for policing reform are calling for the complete destruction of the United States, and that graffiti being sprayed on a building is a heinous enough crime to justify the deployment of 100's of unidentified officers, illegal detainment, and the employment of riot control measures like tear-gas on unarmed crowds.

It's a cult, and the NRA is a big part of it. They helped launder Russia's money for the Republican party. Don't expect rationality or a sense of their own hypocrisy to move them.

The Republican silence on what's happening in Portland is jarring
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/meet-the-press/republican-silence-wha
t-s-happening-portland-jarring-n1234684

If you’ve followed American politics over the last 10 years, you might be surprised that Republicans are more outraged at Liz Cheney than they are federal armed agents that just tear-gassed a city’s mayor.

What happened to “Don’t tread on me”?

What happened to states’ rights?

What happened to freedom of speech and assembly?

It’s easy to understand in our current politics why elected Republicans aren’t speaking out against the Department of Homeland Security forces in liberal, urban Portland. (Sen. Rand Paul is one exception.)

But if you lived through the Obama Era, this Republican silence is jarring.

And the next time they’re out of power from the White House, it will only undercut future efforts by them to decry federal overreach.

As to what's going on in Portland at the local level ... it's complicated.

And everybody's got their own spin on it.

BTW, as far as I can tell, the mayor is getting criticized by businesses for letting the riots go on, by some groups for being the puppet of 'big money donors', and by rioters for letting the police 'over-police' and use teargas; while at the same time he's protesting the federal presence.

It's a good thing there's a mayoral election coming up so people can vote on whether or not he's overall representing their interests. The populace needs to have their say, instead of having outsiders driving the narrative.

Speaking in a telephone interview on Fox News, Trump began by saying he was ready to dispatch "50,000, 60,000 people" into American cities. But eventually he upped the figure to 75,000 -- but said it would require local authorities asking for help.

"We have to be invited in. At some point we'll have to do something much stronger than being invited in," Trump said. "We'll go into all of the cities, any of the cities. We're ready," he added.

Deploying 75,000 officers would mark a significant portion of all federal officers in the country. According to a 2019 report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were approximately 100,000 federal law enforcement officers in the entire United States in 2016, the last year for which data was available.

Sending 75,000 out of 100,000 officers is Trump promising the equivalent of pointing a gun at his own head. I certainly hope he goes all the way, before the election, and pulls that trigger. The mess he'll make will be spectacular!

But today isn't that day. Marcos and his people think that it is.

Fine, I guess, but they need to realize that it's an act of war. They don't get to do it and then cry that they're the victims after the fact. Actions have consequences. Large actions have large consequences.

The Lead Federal Agency Responding to Protesters in Portland Employs Thousands of Private Contractors
Congress needs to shine a light on the use of private security firms, including ‘Blackwater’ legacy companies, in Trump’s response to ongoing civil rights protests
https://medium.com/@wkc6428/the-lead-federal-agency-responding-to-protesters-in-portland-employs-thousands-of-private-db137349f8b0

What has not been reported widely in the media, however, is the fact that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) unit that is coordinating the “crowd control” effort — an agency called the Federal Protective Service (FPS) — is composed largely of contract security personnel. Those contractors are being furnished to FPS by major private-sector security companies like Blackwater corporate descendant Triple Canopy as well as dozens of other private security firms.
In fact, FPS spends more than $1 billion a year on these contract security guards who are authorized to conduct crowd control at federal properties, such as those in Portland. And, based on available photographic and document evidence, it appears those private contractors are now part of the federal force arrayed in Portland and are likely to be part of the federal response President Trump has promised to stand up in multiple other cities, including Chicago, Detroit, New York, Philadelphia and other urban centers led by Democratic mayors across the country."

It's hard to imagine a more literal example of fascism than using private resources to execute the Government's monopoly on legitimized violence.

Stupid people don't know they're stupid, and they certainly don't realize how obvious it is to others.

Yep, tear it down. And tear down all the American Indian statues as well. History people, learn your history. North America was not a Utopia before Europeans arrived. Not even close.

One reason why many indigenous Americans were actually eager for contact with Europeans was to acquire more advanced weaponry with which to defend themselves and kill their existing enemies. Every early French account from Canada and the Great Lakes attests to this.

There’s a fairly convincing theory out there that the word Iroquois (pronounced “iro-kwé” in 17th-century French) was just a corruption of a Basque-Algonquin pidgin word that meant “the killers” or “the murderers.”[1] (The Iroquois did not traditionally refer to themselves as “Iroquois.”) Basque fishermen and whalers were living with the Algonquian peoples of what became Quebec possibly as early as the late 1400s and witnessed some trauma and terror. The natives of eastern Canada were definitely interested in European weaponry to defend themselves against their enemies in what became the state of New York. Europeans didn’t cause that brutal conflict. They walked into it — and ultimately made it worse — but they didn’t walk into a North American utopia.

When French explorers and traders made it out to the western Great Lakes in the 17th century — 200 years before the slow Brits, Germans and Scandinavians eventually resettled Minnesota and Wisconsin — this was a refugee zone. Seventeenth-century Wisconsin was no empty wilderness, but a lot of people living there had only just come into that area. Green Bay was the destination for lots of groups who were fleeing the Iroquois back east. In some ways, the Great Lakes in the 1600s were the Syria of the day, with the bizarre twist that the Iroquois made raids out to the Midwest not only to kill but to replace their own dead through kidnapping. (A custom not unique to them. But since this is definitely not something practiced by Europeans, from what utopian ideal would it have come, exactly?)

The Dakota people, who lived mostly west of the Mississippi, actively wanted to make contact with the French because the French had weapons with which they could terrorize the Cree out to the west. Europeans hadn’t even been to Minnesota yet, but when they got there, the locals were already fighting and looking for better ways to kill each other. A “utopia”? Hardly.

In the 1600s, French Jesuit priests left hundreds of accounts of warfare — and several became the victims of it — when they wandered into the Great Lakes and Northern Appalachia, a terrifying place 400 years ago. The great historian Richard White, who teaches at Stanford — no home-published hack — looked at all these accounts in The Middle Ground, his classic book on the Great Lakes in what was probably the grisliest period of its history. Here’s a sample. No serious historian disputes this stuff.

The Iroquois onslaught did not halt other wars in the pays d’en haut, and sometime during the Iroquois wars, four or five hundred Miami warriors marched against their southern enemies. In their absence, a band of Senecas destroyed their village. Only one old woman, left for dead, survived. She told the returning Miamis that the Senecas had marched the women and children east.

Every night as the Senecas traveled home, they killed and ate a Miami child. And every morning, they took a small child, thrust a stick through its head and sat it up on the path with its face toward the Miami town they had left. Behind the Senecas came the pursuing Miamis, and at every Seneca campsite, brokenhearted parents recognized their child.

When the Senecas were within a day’s march of their own village, they sent their people a message telling them to prepare a great kettle and spoon to enjoy the good broth they were bringing them. It was at this last campsite that the pursuing Miami warriors at last caught the Senecas. But the Senecas had guns and the Miamis did not, and so the Miamis decided to set an ambush rather than attack the camp directly.

Two Miami spies watched the Seneca camp. And that night, as usual, for the evening meal one of the Senecas decapitated a child and prepared its body for the kettle. Hearing a noise outside the camp, the cook tossed the head into the bushes and told the wolf he imagined lurking there that he was giving it the head of a Miami for its supper. The Miami spies carried the head back to their companions who sorrowfully recognized it.

When the heavily laden Senecas reached the Miami ambuscade, they were overwhelmed. The Miamis killed all but six. Two escaped. Four were taken prisoners. The Miamis killed two of their captives and beheaded them. They ran a string through the ears of the heads and hung the heads around the necks of the remaining two prisoners whose hands, noses and lips they cut off. They then sent them home to tell of the vengeance of the Miamis. At the Seneca village all was horror and confusion. The Miamis returned home with those of their relatives whom the Senecas had spared.[2]

You can argue that there are cultural, even religious reasons behind Native Americans flaying and eating their enemies, for example, and you’d be right — the French Jesuit Jean de Brébeuf died after the Iroquois drank his blood: to imbibe his incredible courage, much like Brébeuf himself believed he drank the blood of Jesus during mass, for spiritual benefit — but some of them still reveled in cruelty for its own sake. Europe obviously also has a long litany of sadistic butchery, with enough beheadings, disembowellings, impalings and gas chambers to fill a huge archive of misery. But Europeans in no way taught the natives of North America how to destroy their neighbors. And they certainly didn’t walk in and destroy a “utopia.”

Native American society collapsed overwhelmingly because Old World diseases wreaked havoc on populations with no natural immunity to them. Add to that existing warfare, plus what was considered legitimate conquest in warfare at that time, plus the ruthless shredding of treaties by the U.S. government and land-hungry settlers after 1783, plus intermarriage (especially in Canada and Mexico) which simply diluted the population. In Mexico, native society collapsed because the Aztecs were one of the most brutal empires in the history of the world — no utopia there. When the Spanish under Cortés rode into the Valley of Mexico 500 years ago, thousands of Mexicans were eager for help in throwing off the rule of the hated Aztecs. At least in the beginning, they weren’t the victims of the Spanish. They were willing allies. Without native military help, the Spanish would have been wiped out virtually overnight.

And disease would have decimated Native Americans no matter who came over the Atlantic — or the Pacific. The Chinese would have spread the exact same diseases. Africans were involuntarily killers of Native Americans, not just “the white man,” because Africans carried Old World diseases. (For the record, not all Africans came here in chains, either.[3]) Europeans weren’t invincible to disease in the so-called “New World.” In the tropics, thousands of Europeans dropped dead from malaria. They didn’t just walk in and have their way. A similar thing happened when the Black Death, originating in China, got to Europe in the 14th century. The Black Death peaked in Europe only 150 years before Columbus came to the Carribean. Massive numbers of Europeans died from a disease that was new to their own part of the world. This process was not unique to the “New World.”

Native Americans’ ability to kill was amplified, not created, by European weaponry. They were certainly sucked into the greed and slaughter that Europeans have left behind almost everywhere they’ve ever gone in the world. But Europeans didn’t teach them how to be cruel or how to kill.

The great historian David Hackett Fischer says that the way we assess history is like an earthquake in a bathtub, with waves moving from one side to another. Incompetent, ideologically-driven historians 200 years ago depicted Native Americans as “savages” and Europeans as “civilized” to the point of hagiography. To compensate for this, shoddy revisionists — mostly on the left — depicted Native Americans as infallible, saintly victims of barbaric savages from Europe. Both of these views are wrong and all of this is cartoon history. Humans aren’t made of cardboard. In the future, we need a less ideological, more balanced and empirical understanding of the past. Fortunately, we have that. People just don’t read enough books. Whether it’s 1519 or 2019, trolls, emotional wrecks, and half-assed historians shape our view of the world.
