What you are so certain will lead to compromise would actually lead to even worse gridlock. If Jefferson Davis had been Abraham Lincoln's V.P. the Federal government could not have functioned because Davis's goals were incompatible with Lincoln's, just as today the GOP's goals are literally, not figuratively, at war with the Democratic Party's goals. Look at the Democrats' platform. Compare it to the GOP's. You will see that the two cannot come to a compromise.

That may be the stupidest example possible.

Wrong, but I know who can explain it to you, maybe even explain to you your passionate objection to HR-1 as "unconstitutional":

Will the quest for secular redemption through politics doom the American idea?

Shadi Hamid writes:

The United States had long been a holdout among Western democracies, uniquely and perhaps even suspiciously devout. From 1937 to 1998, church membership remained relatively constant, hovering at about 70 percent. Then something happened. Over the past two decades, that number has dropped to less than 50 percent, the sharpest recorded decline in American history. Meanwhile, the “nones”—atheists, agnostics, and those claiming no religion—have grown rapidly and today represent a quarter of the population.

But if secularists hoped that declining religiosity would make for more rational politics, drained of faith’s inflaming passions, they are likely disappointed. As Christianity’s hold, in particular, has weakened, ideological intensity and fragmentation have risen. American faith, it turns out, is as fervent as ever; it’s just that what was once religious belief has now been channeled into political belief. Political debates over what America is supposed to mean have taken on the character of theological disputations. This is what religion without religion looks like.

Not so long ago, I could comfort American audiences with a contrast: Whereas in the Middle East, politics is war by other means—and sometimes is literal war—politics in America was less existentially fraught. During the Arab Spring, in countries like Egypt and Tunisia, debates weren’t about health care or taxes—they were, with sometimes frightening intensity, about foundational questions: What does it mean to be a nation? What is the purpose of the state? What is the role of religion in public life? American politics in the Obama years had its moments of ferment—the Tea Party and tan suits—but was still relatively boring.

We didn’t realize how lucky we were. Since the end of the Obama era, debates over what it means to be American have become suffused with a fervor that would be unimaginable in debates over, say, Belgian-ness or the “meaning” of Sweden. It’s rare to hear someone accused of being un-Swedish or un-British—but un-American is a common slur, slung by both left and right against the other. Being called un-American is like being called “un-Christian” or “un-Islamic,” a charge akin to heresy.

This is because America itself is “almost a religion,” as the Catholic philosopher Michael Novak once put it, particularly for immigrants who come to their new identity with the zeal of the converted. The American civic religion has its own founding myth, its prophets and processions, as well as its scripture—the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and The Federalist Papers. In his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, Martin Luther King Jr. wished that “one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed.” The very idea that a nation might have a creed—a word associated primarily with religion—illustrates the uniqueness of American identity as well as its predicament.

At least while Lincoln was alive, V.P. Johnson was cooperative. V.P. Jeff Davis would have been sabotaging everything Lincoln tried to do. Johnson was impeached because he was a slave-owner who won't punish the slave-owners of the Confederacy. Then when Johnson wasn't convicted, it was payback time for those who voted to remove him. He really took the side of the slave-owners by pardoning them for their war crimes.

Is this the bill which legislates that a covid is required to be declared every General Election year so that Dems and other Libtards can again use it as excuse to steal Elections?

Or was that in the covid Emergency Rescue bill, which had almost 9% of the $1.9T allocated to covid-related spending?

The most intense voter suppression activity is in states narrowly carried by Joe Biden in 2020 but where Republicans hold a governing trifecta, namely Arizona and Georgia. In these two states they are entirely able to enact voting restrictions with Democrats left howling on the outside. If the GOP can overcome its own divisions, and not write laws so stupidly that the courts will strike them down, they can perhaps hold off or reverse blue trends simply by shrinking the electorate. Or so they hope. They also hope to head off Democratic efforts to preempt state voter suppression activity via a restored Voting Rights Act or the much more definitive legislation already passed by the U.S. House in H.R. 1, the For the People Act (both likely doomed in the Senate unless there is filibuster reform).

Okie dokie!
He reads a telepromper good now!

But what does it have to do with anything?

He mourns the death of everyone, not just victims of Covid-19?
Oh, big deal.
All of the negative effects ... the parties that never happened, the jobs and homes lost, the isolation from loved ones, the vacations never taken ... were a result of GOVERNMENT MANDATE, NOT A RESULT OF COVID-19.

If you want to blame deaths on anyone, blame them on the government - the President and governors who did not take effective action soon enough.

And if you want to blame anyone for the jobs lost, blame state governments (mostly Dems) who were the first to institute lockdowns, which "flattened the curve" but ultimately did not prevent infection.

THE TRUTH?
IT'S A SHIT SANDWICH, NO MATTER WHICH SIDE YOU BITE.

And don't forget, the vaccines were developed UNDER TRUMP.

Biden's message?

TRUST GOVERNMENT! The same government that ordered nursing homes to take in people who had been diagnosed with Covid-19, causing about 10,000 extra deaths! (Cuomo)

TRUST GOVERNMENT SCIENTISTS AND DOCTORS! The same scientists and doctors that refused to even consider preventive medicine, like HCQ or vitamin D or ivermectin, which showed success as a preventative (not a treatment) in foreign studies.

There were a couple of things Trump COULD have done early on, but he didn't: Close the border to all incoming foreign travellers, and require ALL returning Americans to quarantien and

Commandeer all N95 masks and use war powers to build factories at home to make crap-ton more. Those "procedure" masks are only minimally-effective. Vatious studies have shown they prevented approx 1-2% infections and deaths, which is better than nothing but not really effective. But nobody has ever claimed that N95s don't work.

GOVERNORS could have clamped down on nursing homes, which is where 40% of deaths occurred.

And the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT could have given Sputnik5, the conventional Russian vaccine (not mRNA-based) an EUA, cross-licensed it to mfrs who didn' have a viable vaccine in the pipeline, since it is very effective and available earlier than the others.

what can Biden* do in addition to improving N95 capacity?

KEEP THE FUCKING BORDERS CLOSED, JOE. ESPECIALLY TO ILLEGAL ALIENS WHO MAY BE COMING IN WITH VARIANTS WE DON'T KNOW ABOUT.

END THE ENDLESS WARS SO THE COVID RELIEF PACKAGE (90% TO B BUSINESS) WON'T BLOW A COVID-SIZED HOLE ON OUR BUDGET.

The rest is all just emotional bullshit and phony sympathy.

Are you getting paid by the word, Signym? Getting back to why HR-1 should be passed:

Maybe we can break the rules whenever we'd like to now...

We just don't want to break them to raise the minimum wage.

Point being, the filibuster isn't going to be broken. Whether or not 50 Democrats were going to pass the minimum wage is besides the point. They knew that the only way it had a prayer to pass was to sneak it inside of legislation that only required a 51/50 vote by pretending that it related to the budget.

HR1 has nothing to do with the budget, so it will need 60 votes to pass.

I don't know why I come back and this thread is still even being discussed.

HR1 will NEVER pass.

Was that short enough for you?

Two reasons: 1) the video of Trump repeatedly saying the election was stolen from him by the news media, the vote counters, the Democrats. He also demanded that the camera be turned to show his claimed hundreds of thousands who came out to hear him. The camera turned to show thousands, not hundreds of thousands. Trump was lying about the election count and about how many were at his rally.

That video set off a wave of new laws.

2) The most intense voter suppression activity is in states narrowly carried by Joe Biden in 2020 but where Republicans hold a governing trifecta, namely Arizona and Georgia. In these two states they are entirely able to enact voting restrictions with Democrats left howling on the outside. It wouldn't hurt to also include a special provision in every bill that helps Manchin's voters back in West Virginia. With frequent large bribes, wonderful things become possible in the Senate. Without bribes, nothing but evil and sadness will happen for the next two years, followed by the Democrats losing their majority in Congress. If the Democratic Party doesn't use both the carrot and the stick on Senator Joe Manchin, the party will fail at its job of governing.

There are at least four (five?) things about myself I've mentioned at fff.net. Each would be found morally repulsive to many people if my life was well documented in a movie with actual brutal scenes of me on the job: war, hunting, construction, cattle-ranching, natural gas drilling. I loved my jobs, even the nastiest, most brutal parts. There was no way to accomplish anything in the areas I've worked without offending the moral sensibilities of softer, more delicate people. There is no way for the Democrats to work their job of governing without offending softer people.

I'll never be a "good man", and very possibly you could call me "Jayne Cobb", the useful and necessary thug from the Firefly stories. Jayne is essential to keep the stories from bogging down into uplifting sentimentality. The Democratic party can either be ineffective and fail or it can be a little Jayne Cobb thuggish with Senator Manchin of West Virginia and succeed at governing. But however little or much Joe Biden decides to do about Manchin, in order to get his vote, the Republicans will scream bloody murder. If the GOP isn't screaming and shouting about "unconstitutionality", the Democrats aren't doing the job of governing.

It has nothing to do with Manchin.

51 votes isn't enough to get rid of the filibuster.

P.S. A lot of Democrats aren't on board with doing away with the filibuster anyhow. They have half a brain and realize that it's a good thing in the long term.

Federal Investigation Finds Pennsylvania Postal Worker’s Mail-In Ballot Fraud Allegation Was, You Guessed It, Utter Hogwash

An investigation by the U.S. Postal Service's Inspector General into a Pennsylvania postal worker's outlandish voter fraud allegations determined the claims were, as expected, total hogwash. The claims levied by mail carrier Richard Hopkins shortly after the Nov. election were so cartoonishly villainous that in a normal year with a normal president and a normal Republican political party the burden of proof would have been on Hopkins to prove that he wasn't totally full of it. Instead, in 2020, Trump and his Republican allies, like South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, credulously lapped up Hopkins story. And what exactly was Hopkins story? That he ''overheard” the local postmaster in Erie, Pennsylvania hatching a sinister plot to backdate ballots that arrived after the Nov. 3 deadline, passing them off as legitimate, so they would be counted. Trump, you may remember, lost Pennsylvania by nearly 200,000 votes.

Yes, of course, Hopkins, just minding his own business, happened upon some casual federal election fraud office banter. It was always ludicrous, but it didn't matter and Hopkins' flimsy claim was sucked up into the rightwing delusion that their guy Trump had been robbed and blasted out by Republicans, well, everywhere. On Nov. 10 Trump tweeted that Hopkins was a "a brave patriot." Lindsey Graham, bless his little heart, called for a federal investigation. Hopkins, of course, recanted his story shortly after. When pressed by federal agents, Hopkins "revised his initial claims, eventually stating that he had not heard a conversation about ballots at all— rather he saw the Postmaster and Supervisor having a discussion and assumed it was about fraudulent ballot backdating," the Inspector General report found.

Former President Donald Trump's campaign of lies about a stolen election just delivered a huge victory with a new Georgia law. The Georgia law raises the question of whether election safeguards that prevented Trump's energetic efforts to rig the 2020 White House race after the fact in the state will stand firm in future elections amid false claims of electoral fraud by a president.

Using his massive popularity in the GOP, the former President has made the acceptance of his false conspiracy theories about voter fraud in 2020 a litmus test for Republican candidates seeking his support in upcoming primary elections.

The Georgia bill is only one example of GOP efforts in multiple states -- including many crucial electoral battlegrounds -- to hold back a diverse demographic tide in cities that favor Democrats, which critics see as an attempt to cement white minority rule in the United States.

Multiple courts and Trump's own Justice Department found there was no widespread electoral fraud in 2020. Voter mistrust was largely fueled by Trump's blatantly false claims that he had been cheated out of office in a corrupt election, which were incessantly broadcast by conservative media outlets.

Georgia's action threw a political grenade into the debate over a Washington campaign by many Democrats to abolish Senate supermajority rules that Republicans could use to block their sweeping election bill, known as the For the People Act. The measure would establish national standards and reverse restrictions like those that are now the law of Georgia. Republicans brand the Democratic bill as an unconstitutional power grab.

Black voters hampered by the restrictions of voting in urban areas have often found themselves lining up for hours to vote in inclement weather. The clear targeting of African American voters in Georgia and elsewhere recalls some of the ugliest racial episodes of America's past, and is fueling claims of open Republican racism.

"As the FBI continue to round up seditionists who spilled blood to defend a lie about our elections, Republican state leaders willfully undermine democracy by giving themselves authority to overturn results they do not like," Stacey Abrams said in a statement. "Now, more than ever, Americans must demand federal action to protect voting rights as we continue to fight against these blatantly unconstitutional efforts that are nothing less than Jim Crow 2.0."

^ True news, reported falsely.

P.S. The filibuster won't be broken, since Democrats would need the filibuster already broken in order to bust the filibuster so they can rig elections in this country forever.

That's the real end game here for Democrats. They're trying to make a final play, believing that if the were to make it so any law gets passed with a 51% majority it won't harm them in the future because they will have rigged every election to go to them in perpetuity.

The Democrats' strategy goes all the way back to FDR and Social Security. FDR knew that GOP politicians would become a majority in Congress and would want to repeal Social Security. The GOP has tried many times and failed when voters terrified a few GOP politicians to either not kill Social Security or else lose the next election.

The latest devious Republican attack on Social Security. Ever since Social Security came into existence, Republican politicians and their billionaire donors have attempted to destroy it. It is anathema to the GOP's anti-government ideology.

I had heard the following also attributed to James Clyburn, but those results seem to be scrubbed from social media search engines.

Ted Cruz told activists that there would be no room for compromise on H.R. 1 and the democratic reform push. “H.R. 1’s only objective is to ensure that Democrats can never again lose another election,” he said. “That they will win and maintain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate and of the state legislatures for the next century.” In an appearance on Fox, he went on to dub it the Corrupt Politicians Act, calling it “the single most dangerous piece of legislation before Congress,” and insisted its passage “would result in millions of illegal immigrants, and criminals, and felons being able to vote.”

I'm from Texas and Ted Cruz is full of shit:

Inside the Koch-backed effort to block the largest election-reform bill in half a century

In public, Republicans have denounced Democrats’ ambitious electoral-reform bill, the For the People Act, as an unpopular partisan ploy. In a contentious Senate committee hearing last week, Senator Ted Cruz, of Texas, slammed the proposal, which aims to expand voting rights and curb the influence of money in politics, as “a brazen and shameless power grab by Democrats.” But behind closed doors Republicans speak differently about the legislation, which is also known as House Resolution 1 and Senate Bill 1. They admit the lesser-known provisions in the bill that limit secret campaign spending are overwhelmingly popular across the political spectrum. In private, they concede their own polling shows that no message they can devise effectively counters the argument that billionaires should be prevented from buying elections.

A recording obtained by The New Yorker of a private conference call on January 8th, between a policy adviser to Senator Mitch McConnell and the leaders of several prominent conservative groups—including one run by the Koch brothers’ network—reveals the participants’ worry that the proposed election reforms garner wide support not just from liberals but from conservative voters, too. The speakers on the call expressed alarm at the broad popularity of the bill’s provision calling for more public disclosure about secret political donors. The participants conceded that the bill, which would stem the flow of dark money from such political donors as the billionaire oil magnate Charles Koch, was so popular that it wasn’t worth trying to mount a public-advocacy campaign to shift opinion. Instead, a senior Koch operative said that opponents would be better off ignoring the will of American voters and trying to kill the bill in Congress.

Kyle McKenzie, the research director for the Koch-run advocacy group Stand Together, told fellow-conservatives and Republican congressional staffers on the call that he had a “spoiler.” “When presented with a very neutral description” of the bill, “people were generally supportive,” McKenzie said, adding that “the most worrisome part . . . is that conservatives were actually as supportive as the general public was when they read the neutral description.” In fact, he warned, “there’s a large, very large, chunk of conservatives who are supportive of these types of efforts.”

HR-1’s opponents will rely on the filibuster to stop the bill because turning public opinion against it would be incredibly difficult. The worst thing conservatives could do would be to deny that the legislation stops billionaires from buying elections.

The Conservative Movement Is Rejecting America

A recent essay in a prominent right-wing outlet gives an unusually clear window into the modern right’s anti-democratic worldview. The American Mind — a publication of the Claremont Institute, an influential conservative think tank based in California — published an incendiary essay arguing that the country has already been destroyed by internal enemies.
https://americanmind.org/salvo/why-the-claremont-institute-is-not-cons
ervative-and-you-shouldnt-be-either
/

“Most people living in the United States today — certainly more than half — are not Americans in any meaningful sense of the term,” Glenn Ellmers, the essay’s author, writes. “They do not believe in, live by, or even like the principles, traditions, and ideals that until recently defined America as a nation and as a people. It is not obvious what we should call these citizen-aliens, these non-American Americans; but they are something else.”

These seditious citizens are opposed, according to Ellmers, by “the 75 million people who voted in the last election against the senile figurehead of a party that stands for mob violence, ruthless censorship, and racial grievances, not to mention bureaucratic despotism.” (74,222,958 voted for Trump. 81,283,098 for Biden.)

If Trump voters and conservatives do not band together and fight “a sort of counter-revolution,” then “the victory of progressive tyranny will be assured. See you in the gulag.”

What exactly this counter-revolution entails is unclear, but Ellmers has some tips. “Learn some useful skills, stay healthy, and get strong,” he writes. “One of my favorite weightlifting coaches likes to say, ‘Strong people are harder to kill, and more useful generally.’”

Ellmers’s essay has been widely discussed in American media and intellectual circles, due to its bracing honesty about the modern right’s worldview and the prominence of the outlet that published it. Claremont is an influential institution of the right; one of its publications, the Claremont Review of Books, published the notorious “Flight 93” essay arguing that the 2016 election was a choice between Trump and national extinction. (“2016 is the Flight 93 election: charge the cockpit or you die,” that essay declared in its opening line.)

Minutes before the January 6 assault on Capitol Hill, former President Donald Trump told his assembled supporters that “if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.” In a 2019 speech, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) warned that “we have come again to one of the great turning points in our national history, when the fate of our republican government is at issue.” In a 2020 Facebook post, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy declared that “Democrats want to defund, destroy, and dismantle our country.”

Ellmers’s essay should be taken seriously because it makes the anti-democratic subtext of conservative discourse into clearly legible text. And it is a clear articulation of what the movement has been telling us through its actions, like Georgia’s new voting law: It sees democracy not as a principle to respect, but as a barrier to be overcome in pursuit of permanent power.

Trump Calls for Major League Baseball Boycott After it Moves All-Star Game Out of Georgia

Trump thinks it’s time to boycott baseball. Trump called late Friday for a boycott of Major League Baseball after it announced it would be pulling the All-Star Game from Georgia as a protest to the state’s new restrictive voting law.

“-April 2, 2021 -

Statement by Donald J. Trump, 45th President of the United States of America

Baseball is already losing tremendous numbers of fans, and now they leave Atlanta with their All-Star Game because they are afraid of the Radical Left Democrats who do not want voter I.D., which is desperately needed, to have anything to do with our elections. Boycott baseball and all of the woke companies that are interfering with Free and Fair Elections. Are you listening Coke, Delta, and all!” Trump said in a statement.

While many researchers have attempted to quantify the health of democracy in different countries around the world, Jacob M. Grumbach’s paper is the first effort to develop some kind of ranking system for US states. It’s still in working paper form, which means it has not been peer-reviewed. But Grumbach’s work has been widely praised by other political scientists who had read a draft or seen him present it at a conference. From the draft's abstract:

The U.S. has a decentralized form of federalism that administers democratic institutions at the state level. Using 61 indicators of democratic performance from 2000 to 2018, we develop a measure of subnational democratic performance, the State Democracy Index. We use this measure to test theories of democratic expansion and backsliding based in party competition, polarization, demographic change, and the group interests of national party coalitions. Difference-in-differences results suggest a minimal role for all factors except Republican control of state government, which dramatically reduces states' democratic performance during this period.
https://twitter.com/tobalspielmann/status/1377075888869761024

American states, which were once praised by the great jurist Louis Brandeis as "laboratories of democracy," are in danger of becoming laboratories of authoritarianism as those in power rewrite electoral rules, redraw constituencies, and even rescind voting rights to ensure that they do not lose.

It's a good first step.

I didn't know you had a democracy system in Russia, Troll.

Here in America, we have a Federation of Republic, a Representative system. All of these words are in our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution - neither of which contain the word "democracy" because the Founding Fathers observed the mobocracy disaster from ancient Mediterranian democracies.

Imagine the hypocrisy of a government who will allow businesses to card people to get a job or buy groceries, but won't card people to vote in elections and gives millions of non-citizens free money from taxpayers.

You have beaten the fact into me, 6ix, about the psychology of Trumptards repeatedly making the same old mistakes that sink them to the bottom and keeps them struggling for their entire lives. You are somewhere between the 1,500th and 1,750th Trumptard to show me the depressing truth about themselves.

Don't be depressed for me. My life is awesome.
