Let’s assume it costs $600 per ton (2,000 pounds) of CO2 removed from the atmosphere.
https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2018/06/cost-plunges-capturing-carbon-
dioxide-air

Let’s assume a gallon of gasoline produces 20 pounds of CO2.
https://www.eia.gov/environment/emissions/co2_vol_mass.php

What does it cost to remove the CO2 from one gallon? The math is simple enough to do without a calculator:
$6. A large number, but not ridiculously large.

As the cost for removing CO2 decreases from $600, gasoline should get cheaper. Refusing to pay for scrubbing CO2 out of the atmosphere is even cheaper.

Carbon Calculus

ducing-greenhouse-gas-emissions-gillingham.htm

For deep greenhouse gas emission reductions, a long-term perspective on costs is essential

I haven't seen a Cage flick since Wicker Man. But I think I'm going to watch the one where he beats the piss out of some Showbiz Pizza puppets.

I hear he doesn't have any dialog in the whole movie. I'll probably be a lot scarier to any labcoats that come my way if I don't say anything to them.

The hate in my eyes will do all the talking for me.

What will you do when the interstate pipelines are shutdown for natural gas and gasoline? Are you switching to solar, wind and nuclear energy? Or will you burn coal and wood to prove you don't believe climate change is real? Maybe go the next step and become an arsonist burning forests? Don't let Smoky the Bear and lab-coat wearing libtards tell you not to start forest fires. You must be free to do whatever you please or else America is a prison!

I don't know. Maybe. What Nic Cage movie was that the plot to?

I think in many of his movies Nicholas Cage's character is denying the reality that surrounds him, which gives him plenty of space to emote. Cage would make a great Senator James Inhofe:

The Bad Economics of Fossil Fuel Defenders

Global warming is fake news. Anyway, it isn’t man-made. And doing anything about it would destroy the economy.

Opponents of action against climate change have always relied on multiple lines of defense: If one argument for doing nothing becomes unsustainable, they just retreat to another.

That’s what we’re seeing now, as conservatives argue against the Biden administration’s push for climate-friendly public investment. As it happens, this push is taking place against a background of unprecedented heat waves, huge forest fires, severe drought in some places and catastrophic flooding in others — phenomena that scientists have long warned would become more common as the planet gets hotter.

Given these events, as The Times recently reported, Republicans have toned down their climate denial — in some cases pretending that they never denied the science in the first place. Thus Senator James Inhofe, author of 2012’s “The Greatest Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future,” is now claiming that he never called climate change a hoax. https://www.amazon.com/Greatest-Hoax-Warming-Conspiracy-Threatens/dp/1
936488493
/

If past experience is any guide, this new willingness to accept the reality of global warming won’t last; the next time America has a cold snap, the usual suspects will go right back to denying climate change and attacking scientists. For now, however, they’re focused on the immense economic damage that, they claim, will result if we try to limit emissions of greenhouse gases.

So let me offer four reasons not to believe a word they (Senator James Inhofe as played by Nicholas Cage) say on this subject.

With a title like that, I thought there might actually be some meaningful or important suggestions of things everyone could sacrifice to help stop climate change.

Yanno... like not buying a ton of shit you don't need, or demanding there are changes made to the bullshit way that corporations package everything and the fact that the stores just throw tons of plastic in with the trash instead of recycling it like they do with the cardboard (that takes a lot of time and money to make a plastic bale compared to the cardboard ones, don'tcha know?)

Don't get me started on what happens to broken packages of bottled water.

But no. It's just some angry dude making too much money ranting that nobody wants to vote for a carbon tax.

Same old shit.

Why are you complaining about plastic? The plastic is NOT burned into CO2. It is buried. Plastic makes no difference to climate change. Now for something real: We used to believe that achieving big reductions in greenhouse gas emissions would be difficult and expensive, although not nearly as costly as anti-environmentalists claimed. Over the past dozen years or so, however, we’ve experienced a technological miracle. As nicely documented in an article by Max Roser, the costs of solar and wind power, once dismissed as foolish hippie fantasies, have plunged to the point that quite modest incentives could lead to a rapid reduction in use of fossil fuels.

Why did renewables become so cheap so fast?
https://web.archive.org/web/20210817001925/https://ourworldindata.org/
cheap-renewables-growth

The big sacrifice will be coal miners losing their jobs. Since there are only 50,000 of them, it would be better for America if they would all retire or find other work, maybe fighting forest fires.

Typically Trumptards lose their cool in an argument, which is also why they make so many mistakes and can't easily correct their ways. They just keep shooting, missing the kill, and wasting ammo rather than either manually compensating or re-calibrating their gun-sight.

These skeptics believe in climate change. Why is it so hard to convince them catastrophe is coming?

https://web.archive.org/web/20210827190516/https://www.houstonchronicl
e.com/business/energy/article/climate-change-global-warming-skepticism-houston-16410884.php

Jim Walzel doesn’t fit the profile of what most people would think of as a climate denier — a term he rejects.

A chemical engineer who made his money as a pipeline executive, Walzel lives in Houston’s West University neighborhood, populated with academics from nearby Rice University. He points to his COVID-19 vaccination card as proof he trusts in science, and says he has little doubt that fossil fuels are warming the planet.

But he’s not convinced that climate change will result in the cataclysmic future predicted by forecasters.

“I wouldn’t call myself a denier, but I am skeptical about the gravity of the thing,” he said. “I’m trying to look at the facts and say what’s the deal here. And from what I’m seeing the consensus of scientists is not as pervasive as you describe.”

Walzel’s views open a window on how and why climate skepticism persists, despite mounting evidence that global warming not only poses a serious threat to the planet but is already doing damage. In Houston, long the unofficial capital of the world’s oil and gas industry, such strains of thought are particularly persistent, often grounded in the work of a small cadre of scientists who fixate on legitimate uncertainties within climate science.

They do not question the fundamental notion that greenhouse gas emissions are raising global temperatures but rather that it will all end in catastrophe. Dismissed as kooks or contrarians, these scientists continue to find followings among those like Walzel who believe if the world is going to shift from fossil fuels in just a matter of decades, we better be certain on the science.

Go to NASA’s website, and it states 97 percent of published climate scientists agree that manmade carbon emissions have caused the planet to warm over the past century. But once you get past the consensus that the planet is warming faster than it would naturally, agreement fractures over how fast polar ice caps are melting or whether climate change will cause more hurricanes and heat waves — hugely complex questions that require looking decades or centuries into the future.

Climate skeptics, or realists as they prefer to be called, fixate on the details under debate, even though the overwhelming majority of climate scientists agree that global warming will go very badly unless mankind takes immediate action.

On Monday, over 29 inches (742 mm) of rain fell in just 12 hours over northwestern Italy, rainfall rates never before seen in all of Europe.

A series of slow-moving storms stalled in the region Sunday into Monday, dumping over 36 inches (925 mm) of rain in the town of Rossiglione, about 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Milan.

For some context, 36 inches is roughly equivalent to the average rainfall one would expect in Seattle in a year. It would take London an average of 15 months to tally such rainfall.

A 6-hour deluge unlike any ever observed in Italy brought nearly 20 inches (500 mm) of rainfall, besting the national 6-hour record for all of Italy.

A warming globe allows room for more rainfall

The significant increase in heavy rainstorms observed around the world is becoming more evident.

As the global temperatures rise, extreme precipitation events will drop more water, according to a report by the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change.

Prometheus gave Man fire. This was insolence and Zeus punished Prometheus for making Man as powerful as the Gods themselves. That is not the end of the story. Over three hundred thousand years, Man burned everything flammable, changing Terra's climate. Zeus was displeased and decided to torture Prometheus more severely, but Prometheus, the bringer of fire and civilization to Mortals, had a solution to the change in climate: even more advanced technology than fire.

But Mortals refused to switch their civilization from fire to the latest technology because "Whatever dude. Nobody cares." Except for Mortal Engineers, the Average Man could not rightly understand tech more complicated than fire. Prometheus said that there was a way to encourage the switch without Man understanding why or how. Then Prometheus gave Zeus a flamethrower, bringing back human sacrifices of Trumptards, starting with Trump and 6ixStringJack. The smoke from Trump's burning fat pleased Zeus, but 6ix's odor stunk to high heaven, irritating the allergies of Zeus.

Natural gas prices are up 600% and electricity now costs double what it did last year in the UK.

People tend to flock to anywhere but Liberal when shocks like this start hitting them.

Why are Democrats so awful. If they really believe that climate change is a problem, why do they always sabotage every single opportunity to do something about it?

This happens every time.

The climate disaster is here

Despite the rapid advance of renewable energy and, more recently, electric vehicles, countries still remain umbilically connected to fossil fuels, subsidizing oil, coal and gas to the tune of around $11m every single minute. The air pollution alone from burning these fuels kills nearly nine million people each year globally. Decades of time has been squandered – US president Lyndon Johnson was warned of the climate crisis by scientists when Joe Biden was still in college and yet industry denial and government inertia means the world is set for a 2.7C increase in temperature this century, even if all emissions reduction pledges are met.

By the end of this year the world will have burned through 86% of the carbon “budget” that would allow us just a coin flip’s chance of staying below 1.5C. The Glasgow COP talks will somehow have to bridge this yawning gap, with scientists warning the world will have to cut emissions in half this decade before zeroing them out by 2050.

“2.7C would be very bad,” said Wehner, who explained that extreme rainfall would be up to a quarter heavier than now, and heatwaves potentially 6C hotter in many countries. Maycock added that much of the planet will become “uninhabitable” at this level of heating. “We would not want to live in that world,” she said.

Carbon dioxide is a waste problem that has been put off for centuries, since steam engines were invented. Another waste problem, sewage, was put off for thousands of years. Why bother properly handling sewage? Think of the $trillions wasted for underground sewer lines and to operate sewage treatment plants! Think of all the money that could be saved by dumping raw sewage in the street but government idiots interfere with the free market solutions to sewage. And don't get me started on government interference with burning your household trash in the backyard. Or the front yard, if you want! This is America! Land of Free! Nobody should tell me I can't have smoke and ashes where and when I want.

Biden will be fine.

As an engineer in the 1970's, I heard bitter complaints from older engineers about the "completely unnecessary" expense of scrubbing smokestacks. These old guys were so sour about that, and later, about not being able to freely dump untreated chemical waste into the Houston Ship Channel. Those same guys switched to voting for Republicans, because Republicans protect industry from "unnecessary" expenses. It those old guys were alive, they would be complaining that climate change doesn't exist and no money should be wasted on it like was wasted on cleaning up smokestacks and liquids dumped into Galveston Bay. (Now I'm 10 to 20 years older than those "old guys" were when they died. They did not take care of themselves. It would be unsurprising if they wouldn't believe in climate change. They didn't believe smoking caused cancer. None the less, cancer killed them.)

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) , who chairs the Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee, will not support a clean electricity program. Why?

Manchin’s home state of West Virginia is one of the largest producers of coal in the US, and Manchin himself benefits financially from coal, the dirtiest fuel for electric power plants. Explaining his opposition, Manchin said in so many words: Just because I say so. How dare you accuse a Senator of being crooked!

The clean electricity standard is a bit of a misnomer because the actual policy being discussed is even more boring-sounding: a clean electricity payment program that pays utilities to clean up their act (which means stop burning coal) and fines them for missing deadlines.

The program would help bring lagging areas up to speed with the ambitious targets set by the Biden administration, which call for 80 percent of the nation’s electricity to come from clean sources by 2030, and 100 percent by 2035. Not only will getting to 100 percent clean electricity directly cut more than a quarter of US carbon pollution, it will also enable large parts of our transportation, building, and industrial sectors to run on clean power. Powering as much of these sectors as we can with carbon-free electricity would allow us to cut US emissions 70 to 80 percent. It would, in short, solve a huge chunk of our climate challenge.

Sen. Joe Manchin does NOT want to reduce carbon because that would close his family's coal mining business. He does NOT want to shutdown his business in 2035, which is only 14 years from now. The motivation for a Capitalist such as Manchin is very easy to understand, but only if you ignore his deflections and rationalizations, which are camouflage for his real motivation -- money.

You don't believe carbon dioxide will change the climate. Those old smokers didn't believe smoke causes cancer, but they are still dead from cancer. If America keeps burning coal, we are dead from climate change. We don't know exactly when, or how many will die, but we also don't know exactly when or how many smokers will someday die of cancer, either, although America already has collected millions of data points about dead smokers.

America is running two experiments in parallel: burning as much tobacco and coal as America wants in order to learn how many Americans die. It will be hard to differentiate which burning substance kills the most people until another hundred years of data is collected. You are now free to smoke if you've got something to burn.

How many cigarettes do you smoke? Are you running an experiment to show that tobacco can't kill you if you don't believe it causes cancer? Trumptards are running an experiment to show that burning coal can't kill them if they don't believe in climate change. Trumptards don't care what either experiment will prove and not caring frees them to do as they please.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Getting older has a way of removing all the things you assumed about yourself, that are part of your identity.

Your teeth going was the first event of that kind, taking away the smile you always thought was an essential part of who you are.

You may get lung cancer, or you may get prostate cancer. Or neither of those might happen, and you could develop high blood pressure and have a stroke - and there goes the independence you imagine is an indelible part of you. Or you could get microvascular disease and develop dementia, and there goes the mind you feel is who you are. And so on.

There can be many steps between who you are now and death; removing the things about you that you think are who you are, bit by bit.

But enough about you, because there are other topics.

This particular one is global warming.

Coal-fired electricity forecast to rise in the U.S. for first time in seven years

Natural gas emits almost 50% less carbon dioxide than coal. As natural-gas prices surge, coal-fired generation in the U.S. is set to increase for the first time in seven years, a government forecast finds.

The U.S. Energy Information Agency (EIA) said coal-fired generation will jump 22% this year. The EIA notes that in many parts of the country, power plans choose between the two sources, coal or gas.

The year-to-date delivered cost of natural gas to U.S. power plants has averaged $4.93 per million British thermal units, more than double last year’s price, the EIA said.

That said, the EIA pointed out the power sector has retired about 30% of its coal plant generation capacity since 2010. No new coal-fired power capacity has come online since 2013. The EIA said coal-fired generation will probably drop 5% next year.

Natural Gas Weekly Update for week ending October 13, 2021
https://www.eia.gov/naturalgas/weekly/archivenew_ngwu/2021/10_14/

Why are domestic prices for natural gas increasing?
Because U.S. exports of LNG are establishing a record high this year, and a new record high is anticipated for next year. EIA epects LNG exports to average 9.7 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) this year (3.2 Bcf/d more than the 2020 record high of 6.5 Bcf/d) and to exceed annual pipeline exports of natural gas for the first time. The year-on-year increase in LNG exports coincides with slight growth in U.S. natural gas production. U.S. dry natural gas production is expected to average 92.6 Bcf/d this year, which is 1.1 Bcf/d more than in 2020 but 0.3 Bcf/d less than in 2019.

Because U.S. LNG exports have grown faster than domestic natural gas production, inventories are lower than average. As of the end of September, EIA estimates that total U.S. natural gas inventories are 5.5% below the five-year (2016–2020) average. EIA forecasts that U.S. inventories of natural gas will begin the winter heating season on November 1 at 3,572 Bcf, or 4.8% below the five-year average. Lower U.S. inventories could contribute to more natural gas price volatility, particularly if any area in the United States experiences a severe cold snap, which makes the price outlook for this winter very uncertain.

There appear to be 49 senators in the party ready and eager to act aggressively on climate change, but circumstances have somehow conspired to put the 50th vote in the hands of Manchin, who does not merely hail from a state where the fossil fuel industry dominates the political landscape, but who has in fact earned a fortune from the family coal brokerage he founded back in the 1980s, which is now run by his son. Last year alone, he pulled in almost $492,000 in dividends from his stake. It’s the kind of bitter historical irony that seems too hackish for fiction—the literal coal peddler somehow ends up in charge of the planet’s fate!—a detail that I imagine decades from now will make Americans pause while reading about this era and simply go, “Oh, come the hell on.”

But on the other hand, at least he isn’t a Republican. Through the sheer miracle of holding his seat in a deep red state, Manchin is at least giving Democrats the chance to try and deal with our warming planet. He’s keeping the door open on the issue—asked recently if he would support any sort of major climate action, he told reporters: “My God, absolutely. Criminy”—and if Manchin is willing to go along with a major tax credit program, it will be on the rest of the party to decide whether they can live with two-thirds of a loaf. “The thing that I’m fearful about is if progressives say now that Manchin’s killed the CEPP, the whole thing’s going to die, because we can’t support this,” Resources for the Future’s Hafstead told me. “What I don’t want to see, what I hope not to see, is that everything gets taken off the table because this one piece of the puzzle gets taken away.” Compromising with a human chimney might be painful, but there’s still a chance to do vast amounts of good.

Jimmy Carter was the last president to call for Americans to stop consuming so much. Will anyone ever do that again?

Carter didn’t tone things down when he delivered the speech to television cameras. He exclaimed that “all the legislation in the world can’t fix what’s wrong with America,” suggesting that this was a moral as much as an energy crisis the nation faced. Carter worried openly that Americans defined themselves “no longer … by what one does, but by what one owns.” And then he added this zinger, “We’ve learned that piling up material goods cannot fill the emptiness of lives which have no confidence or purpose.”

What happened next to President Carter? Read about it at
https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2021/10/jimmy-carter-energy-crisis
-malaise-speech-biden-supply-chain.html

But to make a long story short, future President Ronald Reagan’s message was: There was no role for citizens to play in a public fight against an energy crisis, no need for sacrifice or a change in the way we lived. I am certain the next GOP Presidential candidate can win with the same message to Americans about climate change, another crisis involving energy.

Has any Republican congressman supported legislation to reduce global climate change? No. A few talked as if they did, but never did anything because they can't if they want to be reelected.

Examples of how that works:

Republicans in Congress are out of step with the American public on climate

New GOP-only caucus explicitly acknowledges climate change, but keeps fossil fuels on its list of solutions

Would you like me to dig up any of the dozens of posts where you try and fail to shame me for living a minimalist lifestyle that even Jimmy Carter himself would never be able to live?

Everything you've ever said on these boards regarding any topic is in conflict with something else you've said on these boards. Often times you contradict yourself through your hypocrisy in mere hours on a single thread.

You have no cornerstone in your life. No base to stand on.

You are a hypocrite and a liar who constantly shifts the goalposts to "win" an argument because you don't actually believe in anything other than your hyper-focused hate for Republicans.

I am convinced you are unstable. In that other thread where you are flapping your mouth about hating women and being stabbed by four guys, I suspect your motor mouth is the real cause of your miseries, not politics or climate change. Here, just in case anybody wants to read about 6ix stabbed:

Instead of getting to party that night, I got to have a catheter stuck up my nose and down my throat, with another one stuck up my dick hole before the(y) cut open my belly to dump a saline IV into my innards before throwing it on the fucking ground to see if I was bleeding internally.

That's what happens after you get sucker punched and beat within an inch of your life while you're down by four guys so bad that it took 10 minutes to even realize that you were shanked during the process.

That's what men used to do before they became soy-boy white knights cucks like you on Twitter and before women became whatever the hell women today are.

Don't care, Dr. Second. Go fuck yourself.

Didn't read past the first sentence.

That's all you get anymore, so you'd better make that first sentence good when you reply to me in the future.
