Trust me. I know the feeling of rushing. If I didn't waste so much time, then everything wouldn't be a rush when I'm working on it. Add to that me being a perfectionist, and it's like my psyche is tearing itself in half sometimes.

But now that I finally feel like I'm starting to get ahead of it, I'm able to have downtime without feeling so guilty about it these days. Boy... it will be nice to finally have the house done and only have to worry about regular maintenance stuff. I'm still a few years away from that, but I'm hoping I can really start to find the balance at that point.

Can't wait.

Got a great head start on winter today and made the most of the nice temps before the freeze came in. Garage is clean. Pretty much everything I could think that I'd need for working inside is in the house and ready to go. Did a few last minute wall repairs in the garage that I forgot about. Tested my snowblower and generator.

Still no car, but plenty of room to park it. Haven't had this much room in there since I put the shelving up and organized everything. Actually, there's more in there now than there was before since I put my mower in the shed for the winter. And I also got the broken snowblower my neighbor gave me last year that I still haven't gotten around to fix. I'm giving that a 50/50 shot that all I need to do is change the spark plug. I'll use that for my front walkway since mine is way too big, and it will be a nice backup for me or my dad if his goes out.

We have the same problem here. Part of the problem is that we're bounded on two sides by fwys and on two sides by busy roads. And when it gets dry and the wind blows, it gets dusty. We track a lot of silt in on our shoes, despite mats at all the doors. And our air handler hasn't been cleaned in a decade, but when they installed they made it inaccessible.


But you're ten floors up, so all of the ground-level dust should never get to your apartment.

Do all of the apartments share a central heating unit? If so, do you have individual thermostats, or just ducts and registers to control your heating? Or does each apartment have its own furnace?

Anyway, unless there's some way to clean the ducts and air handler, there's not much can be done cheaply. There is a cloth you can fit behind the register grill, they claim develops static electricity when air flows thru it, and the static charge attracts dust better than a plain filter. It can be cut with scissors, it's cheap, and can be changed as often as necessary.

Aside from that, most of the high efficiency room air filters tend to be noisy or expensive - often both. And altho they catch a lot of dust, it's not enough to make a noticeable difference in the times I have to vacuum and dust. Allergists AFAIK have given up on the idea of cleaning up air inside the home.

But there are a few significant sources of dust.

One way to stop dust is a shoes-off spot near the doorway, and big mats. I got so tired of sawdust being tracked into the house I put a lot of mats down so "people" (ahem!) who don't wipe their feet have to take at least four steps on them on the way in.

And most dust settles to the floor, so carpets need to be vigorously vacuumed with a cleaner that has a beater bar/brush, good suction, and good filtration. I like to vacuum hard flooring as well.

Cloth upholstery and curtains are also source dust. In fact, the more surfaces you can make wipe-able, the better off you'll be.

I've found that giving the house a good vacuuming (including vacuuming soft furniture) and dusting hard surfaces with a damp cloth helps reduce the overall amount of dust and the number of times I have to do it.

And now, I have to finish vacuuming bc the dog is shedding, and altho I've given her a bath and brushing there's dog fur all over the floor.... It's terrible.

I'm on the tenth floor and each apartment has their own thermostat to regulate heat.

When I got back today, I gave each heater and going over with the brushes and vacuumed the one in the bedroom. I turned it on before supper and what I did worked. So, I am happy.

I'm trying to understand your setup. Most large apartment buildings - I consider a 10 story blgwith elevators to be karge- have a ginormous hiut water heater (bouker) in the basement that provides hot water for the entire building, and some sort of central heater that orovuide hot air (and here, usually AC) for the whole building as well, with complex pneumatic or solenoid valves to control hot and chilled air flow so that each apartment has its own thermostat.

In older buildings, each unit had a gas floor or wall heater and sometimes a window AC fitted in after the fact. REALLY old buildings had radiators. But I can't imagine a newish bldg with any of those bc of inefficiency and safety concerns, so what kind of heater do you have? Electric?
