True. But like they say old habits are hard to break. And that one keeps sneaking back up on me.

Balance is.

Trust me. I know the feeling of rushing. If I didn't waste so much time, then everything wouldn't be a rush when I'm working on it. Add to that me being a perfectionist, and it's like my psyche is tearing itself in half sometimes.

But now that I finally feel like I'm starting to get ahead of it, I'm able to have downtime without feeling so guilty about it these days. Boy... it will be nice to finally have the house done and only have to worry about regular maintenance stuff. I'm still a few years away from that, but I'm hoping I can really start to find the balance at that point.

The snow has arrived officially now before 2pm. It's sticking on balcony and the rooftops around me.

But I'm in for the day and so have to see what tomorrow brings.

Can't wait.

Got a great head start on winter today and made the most of the nice temps before the freeze came in. Garage is clean. Pretty much everything I could think that I'd need for working inside is in the house and ready to go. Did a few last minute wall repairs in the garage that I forgot about. Tested my snowblower and generator.

Still no car, but plenty of room to park it. Haven't had this much room in there since I put the shelving up and organized everything. Actually, there's more in there now than there was before since I put my mower in the shed for the winter. And I also got the broken snowblower my neighbor gave me last year that I still haven't gotten around to fix. I'm giving that a 50/50 shot that all I need to do is change the spark plug. I'll use that for my front walkway since mine is way too big, and it will be a nice backup for me or my dad if his goes out.

Snow that arrived also brought strong winds so all ferries between the mainland and Vancouver Island were cancelled for Tuesday. Hopefully they will be back up and running tonight or early tomorrow morning.

Suppose to shift to rain around me by the time I head to bed. My area will probably all totaled have gotten around 9 inches which is 25cm.

That's what the conversion table said 25cm works out to. But I doubt that my specific area saw that much. Won't know until I head out.

So vacation is over and I've been pushing thru misc chores, appts, errands and some yardwork which includes planning on how to regrade the front yard.

One side of the front walkway is very low, the other side has a hump that causes dirt to wash out onto the driveway. The complication is that there is a 20' Island Oak that I don't want to kill, so I've been digging around looking for tree roots to see how much I can move and where I need to stop.

But today will be just general cleanup. Tomorrow and the next few days are predicted to rain so its back to indoor work.

Made one of my more complicated recipes yesterday: Thai red curry with stirfry beef and hot sauce. There's a reason I don't do that too often: too many vegetables and herbs to prepare 1/4 c cilantro, potatoes, red pepper, snow peas, hot green peppers, grated ginger, pineapple, and lots of basil. Good thing my garden basil is still alive! I had some leftover cauliflower so i threw that in, too. Coconut milk, red curry paste, cumin, fish sauce and sugar. It's a tasty curry but a PITA.

Nothing of importance got done today. In fact, I took a super long nap that I'm going to regret tonight.

Made some plans with my bud for tomorrow night. I'm going to help him drive a car back to his house, then he's ordering pizza and we're having that last movie night before moving his furniture out and we do the other work. We'll probably be bringing the furniture over to my place on Saturday.

Still no word on the car. I told him that it's been so long since I've driven one I might need him to give me lessons before I drive his car back to his house.

Well, despite interruptions I managed to trim a bush, rake up the driveway (almost a bins-worth of trimmings, leaves and pine needles), and finally wash the dog and trim her nails. If the rain holds off I'm going to rake up the back and pick up the palm stalks and grinds.

Speaking of rain... The predicted storm looks to be swinging north. We may not be getting rain but it looks like everywhere from Point Conception to Sacto is getting heavy rain, and snow in the Sierras. Woo hoo!

Yeah. The sofa and recliner. Not sure if the fireplace is coming my way yet or not.

Mechanic got real sick over the weekend. I thought his wife died when he picked up the phone from how he sounded on Monday. He still sounded like shit today but he's going to have my car up tomorrow, he says....

Whatever.

As long as the price doesn't go beyond what he told me before, no biggie. I don't really need the car right now. I'm going to need to call in another favor on a ride if I don't have it by Saturday though. Just about ran out of perishables again.

Won't be helping my friend out tomorrow. He forgot some of his wife's family was coming and staying overnight and he'll be watching Football on Sunday and doesn't want to take the room apart until after the weekend. I think he's going to have a tough time letting that setup go.

We're going to have a lot of catchup work to do if the weekend is burned though. His choice. He's the one who's got to work all week.

Yeah... well when I say I'm "making a lot of progress" on this project it's really like spraying a garden hose into the ocean.

Fortunately for me, I still have some relationships with some REAL "computer people" that I developed a long time ago, and with a little collaboration with them I've been able to make a lot more progress on one specific new thing I've been doing. I won't go into details in these forums other than to say that it's a long time archival and preservation effort that I spearheaded back in the mid-aughts and has since grown a lot larger than me.

I was always the "brute force" guy who was able to surround himself with smarter people to get some amazing things done.

Most of what I've been doing with this on the side is nothing more than redundancy, documentation and cataloging of behind the scenes stuff that everybody else just assume works and doesn't bother verifying. In this most recent endeavor so far, covering roughly 3,000 "things", I've already discovered 2 "things" that weren't right. At the end of the day, it doesn't really effect much, but you know what a perfectionist I am, and once I'm done those two things and maybe a few by the time this part is finished, everything related to it will work behind the scenes and issues won't accidentally pop up on anybody down the road, but otherwise nobody will ever notice anything was done.

We've all learned quite a few other things that we didn't know during this process. Most all of it completely trivial in the scheme of things, but I like having definitive answers for behavior that aren't based off of assumptions.

Sure it would... If you can handle the tedium and not lose yourself in it.

You've got a family at home that wouldn't let you do that, so you're probably safe.

I've got too much Real World stuff to do now myself. Not just the things that NEED to be done, but also the stuff I just enjoy doing... especially now that I have a lot of tools to do the stuff correctly.

Also, since I've reestablished friend and family relationships and it's become important to me to maintain them (when it wasn't back when I lost myself in this project), I can't imagine that I would ever do that again. I had nearly a solid week straight where I let my sleep schedule get out of wack just recently, but when I needed to step away from it for the RL stuff it wasn't a problem to revert right back to "normal".

Futurama is SO good. You should, you should.

That's one of my favorite quotes ever, and it's from one of my favorite episodes.

What I've noticed that's strange is that for the next month accuweather is predicting that we're going to be trending lower for the highs during the day, but we're also going to be trending higher for the lows at night. It doesn't look like a one-off thing either. That's their prediction nearly every day for the next 30 days.

It's 21 degrees here right now, and my heat isn't going off much. It's amazing how much less energy you burn up when you drop the thermostat around 7 degrees.

But if I'm not bundled up you sure notice the difference in temp from the time right before the thermostat kicks the furnace on to right after it cycles off and raises that temp about 5 degrees.

Fortunately, one of my 6 vents is in the bathroom and when I'm going to take a shower I can just close that door for a while and it's way hotter in there than the rest of the house for shower time.

I don't really have room for one of those things. I just put a mask on so I wouldn't breath in the dust I was sweeping out and I was fine.

We have the same problem here. Part of the problem is that we're bounded on two sides by fwys and on two sides by busy roads. And when it gets dry and the wind blows, it gets dusty. We track a lot of silt in on our shoes, despite mats at all the doors. And our air handler hasn't been cleaned in a decade, but when they installed they made it inaccessible.

But you're ten floors up, so all of the ground-level dust should never get to your apartment.

Do all of the apartments share a central heating unit? If so, do you have individual thermostats, or just ducts and registers to control your heating? Or does each apartment have its own furnace?

Anyway, unless there's some way to clean the ducts and air handler, there's not much can be done cheaply. There is a cloth you can fit behind the register grill, they claim develops static electricity when air flows thru it, and the static charge attracts dust better than a plain filter. It can be cut with scissors, it's cheap, and can be changed as often as necessary.

Aside from that, most of the high efficiency room air filters tend to be noisy or expensive - often both. And altho they catch a lot of dust, it's not enough to make a noticeable difference in the times I have to vacuum and dust. Allergists AFAIK have given up on the idea of cleaning up air inside the home.

But there are a few significant sources of dust.

One way to stop dust is a shoes-off spot near the doorway, and big mats. I got so tired of sawdust being tracked into the house I put a lot of mats down so "people" (ahem!) who don't wipe their feet have to take at least four steps on them on the way in.

And most dust settles to the floor, so carpets need to be vigorously vacuumed with a cleaner that has a beater bar/brush, good suction, and good filtration. I like to vacuum hard flooring as well.

Cloth upholstery and curtains are also source dust. In fact, the more surfaces you can make wipe-able, the better off you'll be.

I've found that giving the house a good vacuuming (including vacuuming soft furniture) and dusting hard surfaces with a damp cloth helps reduce the overall amount of dust and the number of times I have to do it.

And now, I have to finish vacuuming bc the dog is shedding, and altho I've given her a bath and brushing there's dog fur all over the floor.... It's terrible.

I'm on the tenth floor and each apartment has their own thermostat to regulate heat.

When I got back today, I gave each heater and going over with the brushes and vacuumed the one in the bedroom. I turned it on before supper and what I did worked. So, I am happy.

Give your dog a big hug for me. My buddy's dog just died a few days ago and I loved that thing more than I did most people. :(

I gave my other buddy some "orders" this morning after finding a good paint sale. Surprisingly, he called me up after he bought everything. I was sure he was going to ask if he could pick me up to pick out the colors and paint for him. He didn't even bother looking at other colors and got the exact same ones I've used in my porch and my living room. (Not too surprised about that though, because I've got a ton of compliments on the two colors and how they compliment each other... including from him).

So, hopefully, the plan is he'll stop working early on Wednesday, we'll get the furniture to my place and then start painting. He asked me if I'd come by Thursday night and help him finish the job and I told him that wasn't a problem.

I'm hoping he got his "homework" done tonight though. He was supposed to dust all the walls, get the TV off the wall mount, take the wall mount down and patch it... and then sand that down tomorrow night and see if it needs any more mud before I get there on Wednesday.

Finger's crossed.

Also talked to my mechanic again because I love annoying myself. Supposedly it will be done tomorrow but it's not like I haven't heard that before. Whatever.

I'm trying to understand your setup. Most large apartment buildings - I consider a 10 story blgwith elevators to be karge- have a ginormous hiut water heater (bouker) in the basement that provides hot water for the entire building, and some sort of central heater that orovuide hot air (and here, usually AC) for the whole building as well, with complex pneumatic or solenoid valves to control hot and chilled air flow so that each apartment has its own thermostat.

In older buildings, each unit had a gas floor or wall heater and sometimes a window AC fitted in after the fact. REALLY old buildings had radiators. But I can't imagine a newish bldg with any of those bc of inefficiency and safety concerns, so what kind of heater do you have? Electric?

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that Brenda doesn't have more dust in her apartment than I've got in my house. I've never cleaned my ducts since I've been here, and god only knows the last time they were cleaned... if ever.

I don't have any carpets to hold any of it in anymore. I usually vacuum before somebody comes over to visit, but only on the 1st floor and the stairs to the bathroom on the 2nd floor. Maybe I hit the floors upstairs about once a year, and the floors in the basement about twice a year.

I barely ever dust. Maybe once a year. My jet black TV stand in the livingroom is covered in it. I probably only hit the ceilings with my vacuums about every 2 years for the cobwebs that start showing up when you don't regularly get the dust sucked up.

I do it enough where it's only a fine coating. A while back I was cleaning my grandma's kitchen that probably hadn't had a deep clean for about 12 or more years and I couldn't believe the thickness of the dust coverage. There were still cats living there before the last clean which made it even worse. It wasn't on any of the highly used surfaces that get cleaned regularly like the table or countertops, or heavy foot traffic areas, but in the nooks and crannies and above the fridge and underneath it were pretty ghastly. Fortunately there wasn't mouse crap in it too... It looks like 99% of the mouse activity remained in the basement since they did have some food in that fruit cellar which they were munching on and didn't need to venture upstairs where human activity was a regular thing.

I'm just not all that sensitive to dust. Perhaps Brenda is more sensitive to it and it's why it's a bother for her.

I guess I still find it astonishing how dusty our house gets, even compared to other places we've lived in SoCal. Last time I visited my childhood home it was winter, and there was hardly any dust anywhere, even upstairs that is hardly used. Here, it's a constant battle. I've tried eliminating as many sources of dust as possible but it's still seriously dusty.

I'm fairly certain that it is electric and this building is well over 20years old. Think it was built when I was in high school so it could be over 30years old. There is a main water heater too. I don't have AC in my place but there is heating in all the hallways and they are coolers as well in the summer.
