My eAG is down to 158mg/dL for the roughly 6.25 days that I've had the meter installed. That's only 4mg/dL above the recommended target for non-pregnant adults with Type 1.

If I threw away the results from the first day and a half, I'm sure I'd be in the high 140s or very low 150s at this point.




I've been hanging onto the low 70's after I stabilized from the earlier drop. I'll be eating soon since dinner is on the stove. I'm going to take some rapid acting since I'm having rice. I'm debating whether or not I should use 8 units for the 64 grams after fiber because of how low I already am. If I weren't worried about it dipping too low while I was sleeping it might be nice for my body to sleep at what a normal person sleeps at. And also it's been my experience that I always go up at night while I'm fasting rather than down anyhow.

I think I'll do 7 units and see what happens tonight.

According to the stats, my mean level for the day has been 130 even. That's my best day by 18 points.

7 units for the 64 grams of rice carbs seemed to be PERFECT.

By the time I started eating, I got an alert that I'd fallen to 65. Shortly after eating I went up to 110, but then it gradually went back down to 88 and seems to be holding steady right around there for now.

I've even been snacking on some shelled sunflower seeds.


120 is the target that Dr. Endo set for me, but there's no reason not to keep it lower as long as I'm not dipping under 70.

I decided to eat a little over 1/4 cup of peanuts along with the sunflower seeds I was snacking on to get me a little higher up before I went to sleep. Last time I checked before I went to bed I was up around 110. When I woke up I saw a graph that had a steady rise a few hours before waking up to 135, and I've gone down to 130 as of writing this.

Even better, I slept for around 7 hours and didn't get up to pee once.

Regular doctor visit today. Not sure he's going to be able to tell me much that I don't already know, but I should be able to get the blood work that Dr. Endo wanted me to do while I'm there.



Yesterday was so good that it officially put my eAG since I started using the monitor to 154mg/dL.

That's great, but my deviations are still too wild. But they seem to be getting better everyday now that I've got my numbers so much lower.

It sounds like you have one more factor to consider: activity level? the insulin is shuttling sugar into your muscles, where it's appropriately being burned up?

Maybe? I'm keeping a log of the questions I will be asking next week during the education courses. I'm hoping that my Nutritionist/Nurse will have some 1 on 1 time for me after the class(es) are over.

Same thing is happening to me again today, but the numbers are even better than yesterday. I only spiked over 200 for a few minutes right while I was in the parking lot to see the general practitioner. I was 180 by the time the nurse pulled me in, and already down to 135 by the time the Doctor came in. When I got my blood work done, I was 85. 80 by the time I left the hospital and right when I got home my meter started beeping at me that I was low and 67. I had a banana and a half cup of peanuts and I'm back slightly over 100 now (with no insulin required to keep it low). And my hope is that this will be the first day since Thursday that I don't have to "save" myself with the chewable glucose tablets.


Doctor's visit went great. Everything else, including my lungs and heart are great, with oxygen absorption at 98%. In his write up that I can see online, under "Physicality", he wrote "He is well developed and looks healthy".

EKG was good.

Metabolic Panel was perfect with everything right near the middle of the normal range. Hilariously, my glucose level was 81 at that point and if you didn't know I was diabetic that result would lead you to believe I wasn't. It just so happened that on my way down the timing was perfect.



And the best part is that my blood pressure was a perfect 120/80. I've NEVER had a perfect 120/80 before.

We're going on 5 weeks of working out, eating right and taking my vitamins daily now. It's nice to know that it shows. Whenever I finally get this sugar level evened out and the whole process becomes second nature to me, in an odd way the diabetes diagnosis might just be the 2nd best thing that's happened to me after getting sober. Chances are, it's probably going to add a lot of years onto my life since my days of avoiding the doctor like the plague are forcibly over.

I wonder if insulin dependent diabetes has ever reversed itself... i.e. that the insulin producing cell recovered from some sort of insult. Everywhere online says "no". I suppose it would be too much to hope for (sigh)

Not "everywhere", actually. I was just reading a study about a woman who was 30 and diagnosed with diabetes 10 years prior. It looks as though through daily fasting and some other stuff I didn't understand she actually got her c peptide count up.

Mine, BTW, looks to be .3 (or .03... I don't remember the decimal placement from the test results). That IS very low, but it's also on the cusp of type I and type 2, which makes sense since nobody can tell me what the hell I've got. They say that less than or equal to .2 is Type 1 and greater than or equal to .3 is Type 2. I think this makes sense since even though we went straight to insulin, there were clearly visible results from the original 500mg of Metformin I was taking twice per day (The weight loss stopped immediately, and the thirst went away).

That's the good news.

The bad news is that the girl who gave me the EKG lied to me and said it was good. It's not good news. Searching online for my results, it looks as though I had a silent heart attack at some point. It's not acute and they mark it as "old". I sure as hell hope somebody tells me what's going on with that tomorrow. Shit... I hope I don't have to have heart surgery now too.





I've only had 13 units of insulin all day today. 7 at breakfast, none for lunch and 6 more before dinner (Dinner had 64 grams of carbs, which I would have been taking 8 units for just a few days ago). For about 3.5 hours after dinner and the 6 units I remained in the 70's which is where I was going into the dinner for several hours after I ate the 1/2 cup of peanuts and the banana after coming back from the hospital at around 3:00PM. After that I started dipping into the low 60s at my buddies house, maybe around 9:00PM. He had some Pho noodle soup things that had 45 grams of carbs per serving. I decided to try one of those without taking any insulin. A little while later I got up to the low 130s but I'm back down in the 110s again.



My average Glucose today was only 109mg/dL, with a deviation of only 32. 91% of my day was in target range, with only 2% high and 7% low.

By far my best day.

Woke up today at 127. I didn't spike while I was sleeping this morning. A gradual rise of about 8 to 12 points or so between 2AM and 9AM is all.

Maybe today is the day I can finally keep it under 200 the whole time?

I get fuckin' twitchy about test results.

Some things (like kidney failure) just kind of silently creep up, and by the time it's symptomatic you're practically dead. So when nurses ask me "How are you doing today?" in that chipper tone of voice, I give them a humorous but qualified answer: I don't know, I'll have to ask my doctor.

But I suspect you won't need any corrective surgery for your heart, at least not for a "historic" event. They probably detected an area of heart muscle damage, which - unlike other areas of the body- doesn't repair itself. But what's done is done. The heart compensates and if you're active and you don't feel overly tired or have chest pain or breathless on exertion you shouldn't stress about that. (You should see all the dents, calcifications and broken toe bones I've collected over the years that they found adventitiously!)

What you need to be doing in looking for ONGOING problems - yanno, cholesterol, calcium deposits in the arteries around your heart etc - and just correct it moving forward.

I get twitchy about EVERYTHING healthcare related.

I might have mentioned I finally got that tetanus booster I was worried about not having a few years back when I took a nail to my palm, but I know I forgot to mention that I also got a pneumonia vaccine yesterday too. I wonder if that has anything to do with those weird "adrenaline spike like" events in my chest area that make me bolt out of bed all the time when I almost fall asleep or the area of numbness on my middle-upper left side of the back that happens when I'm really stressed and/or doing heavy work? Both of those sensations started happening in my late 20's, which would have been right around the time I got strep throat and let it get so bad my throat looked like it had two grody looking and smelling golf balls on the sides and it felt like razor blades going down even just drinking water (once my fever hit 103.5 I had my brother take me to immediate care to get it fixed).

I'm such an asshole. It sucks getting old and finding all of these things you've done to yourself after there's not much you can do to fix them anymore.

Yeah. I have some blood work that I still need to go back for. I got all the stuff for Doc Endo yesterday because it didn't require fasting, but I'm going to have to fast for his blood work. I just got the EKG while I was at it because I didn't need to fast for that. They're in the process of getting a Cardiologist involved for me as we speak.

(Oh, and I'm not very worried about needing to fast in the morning because of the diabetes after what's going on today... More on that in the next post. :smile)

I haven't eaten yet today, although I will be shortly since I am getting hungry. I've done my morning workout and I've been cleaning up the house since my old man called me last night and asked if I would like him to come over to visit today on short notice.

Ever since I got home last night, and all through the night up until right now my sugar level has been almost a straight line. I've been between 110 and 130 for going on about 15 hours straight. The 4 or so additional fasting hours as well as my 15 minute medium intensity workout have not made the sugar spike or fall.

I took my 20 units of Long-Active stuff at the usual time around 9AM, but no other insulin or food since then.


Hopefully I don't spike when I eat lunch. I'm loving what I'm seeing so far.


I was worried about needing to come in to do blood work after fasting 8 to 12 hours beforehand, but now that I've had this morning behind me, I don't think that's going to be a problem anymore.

Well, after going round and round with a half-dozen contractors on our bathroom remodels, WE (heh!) finally decided what we want and where we want to start. The problem was mostly at our end. We thought we'd start with our master bathroom, then we switched partway thru to thinking about doing two at once, and then changed our minds again to focus on the central bathroom. So some of the bids were for bathroom #1, some for both, some for bathroom #2, some excluded finish materials (tile, vanity, fixtures) some included ... so it turns out almost none of the proposals were relevant and I couldn't do an "apples to apples" comparison.

Now that we have an idea what we want I developed a "universal checklist" for bathroom #2 (a complete gut job, SIX) and I hope to get updated quotes from at least four contractors so we can decide.

The bathrooms aren't tiny, but they aren't very big either- typical midcentury ranch house. The current tile trend seems to be for very large tiles .. 24x48... stone or marble-look but... seriously? This is a CA suburban ranch home, not a Roman villa. The size of the tile is way too large for the shower (36x36) and pretentious as all getout. Im looking for a relatively flat (not beveled edge or anything) subway tile in the realm of 3x6 to 5x10. Frameless glass surround. Furniture-style vanity with a "vessel" style sink with more drawers and fewer cabinets. Larger tiles for the floor make sense. I like darker floors, hubby not, I think we'll have to compromise on the color.
New bathtub. New window. The only things were keeping are the toilet, the very large mirror, and the ceiling light fixture.

Oh, but I discovered a LOVELY irredescent glass tile in the blue/delphinium/rose family. Far too expensive and finicky to install for an entire shower wall, but when it comes to doing dear daughter's bathroom I'm going to suggest a plainer tile but a 1-ft "band" of glass tile at about eye level for a splash of color. I think that'll look awesome!

I might have mentioned I finally got that tetanus booster I was worried about not having a few years back when I took a nail to my palm, but I know I forgot to mention that I also got a pneumonia vaccine yesterday too. Strep can do bad shit; it can ruin your kidneys or your heart valves. I don't know about heart attacks, but I does sound like you have some scar tissue in your heart, and- yes- that can cause arrhythmias and fast heartbeats. But there's medicine for that (beta blockers)

They probably want to check your cholesterol, which also needs to be measured fasting.

Yeah. It's a lipid test. My dad says he doesn't even have to fast for that anymore when they test him, but I told him that maybe because of my diabetes I do. I don't know what the number is they're looking for, but Doc said in healthy people it's 100, but in diabetic people it's 70. I went on a glucose rollercoaster last night... *sigh*.

I was on my way to a pretty perfect day there. 2/3rds of it was within range without any rapid acting.

While my dad was here, both while we were talking and while we were watching a movie, I had to eat food (peanuts and bananas) four times because I was dropping to 70 and below. My friend called me up around that time and said he got me some food from Hard Rock and was going to stop by. I told him to drop by even though my dad was there. It was the first time they've seen each other since I was in middle school.

So... I did what any lunatic would do and I ate too much. Supposedly hot wings only have 3grams of carbs, and though I don't remember what fries have off the top of my head, I didn't eat a ton of them. BUT, I DID just eat a banana before he called to tell me he was coming over.

After my dad left, I had been rising and peaked at 250, which is worse than I'd been in days. But by the time I got to 250, I had already injected myself 3 times with insulin to try and keep it going over 200. 2 units, 3 units and then 5 units.

Once it started going down, it went down just as fast as it was rising. I knew what was going to happen while trying to save myself from crashing after using insulin AFTER eating and that I was going to eat too much again and go back up too fast and too high. Especially since I took 4 glucose tablets when I dropped to the 50s. I even got down to 49, which is my lowest so far. At this time it was 10:45PM and I didn't want to call anybody and wake them up, but I was worried about crashing.

Fortunately, it leveled out and went back up. I went to sleep after that and stopped looking at the meter. If I was going to sleep in the mid 250s, so be it. I'll fix it tomorrow gradually, the right way, without doing stupid panic moves.



I didn't go back up to the 200's this time though. It looks like I spiked up around 170 for a while after I went to sleep and I woke up to 127. (First time actually going DOWN by morning rather than spiking up).

Took my daily shot and I'm going to skip breakfast after all of that extra food last night and I'll just try to keep it even.

Lesson learned. No more eating out. Online numbers for carryout food are just too incorrect since every place is going to make things differently. If I'm going to control this thing, I need to be in control of what I'm putting in my body and not leaving it up to chance.

Sounds like a difficult balancing act, SIX Sigh.

Hubby is maxed out on two oral meds and his blood sugar is getting harder and harder to control. he's on a strictly controlled lower carb diet, which is why- aside from cost - we almost never eat out. But it sure means a lot of cooking and dishwashing.

I can manage it well once I find my new relatively small amount of foods that I have on hand at my house. I don't need a lot of variety. I never did. I just need to find what my new normal foods are going to be.

I can eat out on occasion with certain foods, but I think french fries are off the list forever. I'm sure that there were more than 3 grams of carbs in those hot wings, but it had to be the fries that got me that high. These weren't your standard McDonald's fries which were probably the online benchmark. They were delicious. Probably way more carbs in them because of whatever coating they had on them.

I was also crashing and trying to correct that with the banana when it happened, and while I was eating the food my friend brought by it was still dropping lower and got to 53 so I even threw in a glucose tab on top of it. I think under normal circumstances I wouldn't have been rushing to eat to avoid the crash.

I'll probably have a few more episodes like this in the coming weeks as I learn more each time. Obviously, it's extremely easy to over-correct and I need to learn to avoid doing that in the moment.

Over 17 hours into the day and I've been within range the entire time. After eating what amounts to a second dinner last night when I was trying to claw myself out of dangerously low territory, I skipped breakfast today.

I haven't taken any Rapid insulin. I was getting toward 80 around noon and had a 1/2 cup of peanuts. A few hours later I was back down to 80 and I had a LARGE banana that was likely 35 grams of carbs. That did bump me up to 131 at one point, but I'm sinking again.

I will be taking the smallest amount of insulin before I eat rice with my meal tonight, but if I play my cards right it will be my first day where I'm within target 100% for the full 24 hours and I'm going to use less than 5 units of Rapid insulin.

And what's even better, I didn't take that insulin I said I'd take with dinner. I decided to forgo the rice altogether and just have my vegetables in olive oil with two burger patties. It worked twice today. I ate that last banana at 11:09PM. By 11:33 I was down to 80. By 11:48 I was back up to 110. Based off of previous results, I fully expect this to bring me to around the mid 130s for a while and get me through the night.




So a full day 100% in range*, with zero units of Rapid insulin taken and no glucose tabs needed to save me from any lows.

Now all I've got to do is make that happen another 10,000 or so days straight.





*70 to 180 is "range", but I never went below 80 and the only reason I was ever at 171 was very early in the morning when I was "fixing" that glucose roller coaster I went on last night. Otherwise my high for the day was in the 140s and my average glucose for the day was 126, which is 28 points below what I am supposed to be aiming for.

Surprisingly, it made me spike momentarily to the low 160s this time. But only for one reading. It went down to the 150s five minute later and then gradually decreased as the night went on. When I woke up at 8:00 the number was at 115 and had been pretty stable around there for the previous 3-4 hours. These bananas I'd gotten were pretty huge... I will be making sure to get more medium sized ones in the future to prevent any spikes like that.

It's been 10 days already, so I'm going to have to change to a new sensor today. My first thought was that I'd use them a few extra days above the allotted 10 days, but I got warnings at both 23 hours and 4 hours from ten days after I installed the first one, and I fully expect this system to prevent me from using it for one single minute past when it wants me to change them.

Two complaints.... It will take roughly 2.5 hours from installation for the new one to work, so I will be in the dark for that time and need to plan accordingly. The bigger complaint that I have though is that they count those 2.5 hours as part of the 10 days. That's bullshit. I should be able to collect those 2.5 hours every use to prolong the device and give me wiggle room for the future.

Two hours seems like a long time when you're waiting on something...

Finally got the new sensor up and running. Strange, but my numbers are higher than they were before I changed them. Usually my numbers dip around that time of day. I did test my sugar with my finger prick monitor halfway through and when the new sensor was up and running and this tracks.

After I was up for a while and took my daily (18 units today instead of 20), I actually went up from the mid 120s to the mid 130s for a few hours, and now I'm at the mid 150s. Maybe those two units of Long-Active I didn't take really do make a big difference. I won't be altering that any lower for quite a while unless I see different behavior patterns making me think it's a good idea to.

I was hungry since I hadn't eaten anything yet today so I did take 2 units of Rapid and had 10 grams of carbs.

Still well within range today, even if I am a bit higher. Its nice that I didn't have any early morning high spikes and haven't had any mid-afternoon dips. I'd like that number to be about 30 points lower than it's been most of the day today though.

Still a work in progress.

Yeah, it will be a relief to have it done.

For me it will be. But it is now in the lap of the gods. I have several publishers written down and I have to go over their requirements and then pick.

Hopefully for my corner of BC.

Alberta is still bad and no rain in sight for at least the next week. There are still at least 80 fires burning in Alberta. Homes have been lost and people from various communities in evacuation centres. Smoke from the fires has reached into Ontario.

Going to mow the lawn today. Nice, sunny, warm day to do it.

My numbers are pretty even right now, but I do raise above 180 and even get into the very low 200's when my numbers start climbing around 4:00AM and top off around 8:30 to 9:00AM. That's too high, and I'll have to figure out how to correct that.

It's especially strange this morning since when I went to sleep I was only around 125 and I didn't eat any carbs with dinner. I didn't realize I ran out of vegetables and didn't want to cook any rice by itself, so I just had a few burger patties and chicken breasts.

I haven't worked out in 2 days, which may have something to do with this change after two perfect days in range. I also lowered my daily long-active dose from 20 to 18, which may have played a part as well.

I've lost somewhere in the neighborhood of 3-4 lbs in the last 5 days. Not because of the diabetes, but because I'm not eating enough. The cool thing though is that I'm hardly ever hungry, and my stomach must be shrinking due to the fact I'm not gorging on huge amounts of food at only one point during the day like I used to, and I'm spreading out my food intake much more through the day. Energy levels haven't gone down with this weight loss, and my six pack is back after I let a little extra belly fat show up when I was still eating a lot on the insulin but I was not able to monitor my levels constantly with my new continuous monitor system.

Thirst is never an issue anymore, and the last 3 to 4 nights I've been able to get around 6.5 to 7.5 hours of straight sleep without having to wake up to go to the bathroom.

Classes start tomorrow and hopefully I learn a lot.

Believe it or not, your info is helpful for hubby. Taking blood sugar readings in the AM might not be reflective of his average.

I wonder if an implant would be helpful for him, at least in the short run? Maybe isolate what is causing his blood sugar to read too high, or maybe just demonstrate that it's not his diet but that he needs some other med, bc I know for a fact that he's eating somewhere in the realm of 80 grams of carbs a day. I know doctors are used to patients cheating, but maybe a monitor would convince doc that his isn't a diet problem.

I'm glad to provide the unexpected insight.

If his body runs anything like mine, his morning readings might not be at all reflective of his average.

I did have my A1C test done recently and although the exact number escapes my mind, it was somewhere around 275. If you remember, my initial diagnosis was at 409. First visit to the Encologist was 400. Both of these were AM appointments. And then there were the many times I pricked myself first thing in the morning and had anywhere between 360 and 550.

Now, granted, we did have a few weeks there where I was fixing things on the tail end of the 3 month span, and we don't know exactly how far back this thing goes and when it really started ramping up, but I don't believe for a second that those 360 to 550 readings I was getting in the AM hours were at all indicative of my average sugar level given the last few week's results of the continuous monitor.

It wouldn't outright convince the doctor he isn't cheating on carb intake. That's in the system for me, but its incumbent upon me to enter in how many carbs I'm taking in, how much insulin I'm taking, and how often/long/intense I'm working out. The monitor doesn't do any of that on its own. It just logs when I put that info in.

But you're going to get 288 readings per day on this thing as long as he keeps it close and doesn't wander too far away from the receiver. (If I were designing the new version, I would make this give a reading every 60 seconds if you drop below 70mg/dL instead of the standard 5 minutes).

Supposedly you can even swim with this thing on, but I haven't tested that out yet. Showers are okay, but defo be cognizant that you've got it installed when washing off so as not to manhandle it on accident.

In any event, I can't see anything but better results if he tries a continuous monitor. In fact, the 2 hours I had to wait for the new sensor to warm up the other day that left me in the dark was driving me nuts.




Exercise really does work too. I mowed the lawn and pulled some weeds for about 2.25 hours today. I was running a little high from the morning rise before that going into the work. Since then, I ate a HUGE banana, a 1/2 cup of peanuts and then had to eat a cup of Cheerios with a cup of skim milk just to keep my blood sugar up because it kept dropping shortly after it went up from eating each of those things.

FREE CARBS!!!

He's been so wigged out about his back he's basically been chairbound. Afraid he's going to fall and snap a rod or pull out a screw. But I took him to Home Depot and he picked out some wood and today he was planing. (He has a smallish project in mind, turning an old door into a table.)

So maybe that'll help bc diet-wise there's not much else I can do, unless he's prepared to starve himself.

I'm sorry to hear that his back is bad too. I'm honestly hoping I don't get anybody at the class tomorrow that looks at me crosseyed since I don't look the part of a Type 1 diabetic. As difficult as this has been so far for me coming to terms with it and changing up a lot of the way I used to live, the physicality part was relatively easy since I didn't need to lose any weight and I'm still relatively youngish.

It does STILL get hard for me though sometimes. I had to give up on weeding because when I'd get up from being on my knees pulling to throw the weeds in the can, I'd get really light headed. It wasn't happening at first, but the more I did it the worse it got and I started getting worried that I'd have a stroke or something if I kept on with it. The ONLY other time I remember feeling that way was when I was recently sober and I was mowing the lawn on a sunny day in the 90's and I needed to sit down.

My sugar wasn't low at that point, but it was on the steady decrease and at 95 when it was happening. Shortly after I went inside it was dipping to the mid-70's and that's when I had the extra large banana. I immediately felt better, and it wasn't too long until I went up and topped out exactly at 180 breifly before crashing again. That's when I ate the 1/2 cup of peanuts and the spike was much less pronounced to about 135 before going right back down to the 70's while I was taking a shower. That's when I had the 1 cup of Cheerios and 1 cup of skim milk. Once again I shot up but only to 170 this time and I'm back down to 125 right now. No Rapid-Active insulin used at all today, and just the 18 units of Long-Active.

If it weren't for the early morning rises above 180-200 I really want to lower that Long-Active again down from 18 and try to even out those drops in the afternoon/night. But if I'm going to do that I can't mess around anymore and I have to work out at least for one 15 minute session every day if not two when I'm not mowing the lawn or doing other yard work.


I hope your husband can get some action so he can eat and you both can figure out what's going on, and I REALLY hope you can get a continuous monitor on him at least for a month or two because it's a million times better than testing with lancets and strips.
