Did more re-grading today. Had to move some large-ish "pavers" (really, leftover 4" thick patio concrete cut into appx 1.5' X 2' pieces and set in as pathway) bc they were actually acting like a dam and keeping water around the foundation. Also cleared out a trench of lantana and other plants so I can check the grade with mason's string. Tomorrow I have to take someone to Dr, but hope to check the grade from the downspout to the head of the swale. If that's OK then I can start making that low retaining wall around the tree mound.

How is the interior doing? Any fire-quenching rain there?

I hope so. Last I heard the fire rating had gone down for the whole province. So fingers crossed it stays that way. I have to listen to the news tonight.

Out for my walk in a bit. Guess I should take my umbrella as the weather people are still calling for rain today.

Then it starts drying out for tomorrow which is the start of Summer.

Wild fire danger is low right now with rain but with a drying trend it could and most likely will go back up some.

According to a friend who drove by them, the recharge basins along the Santa Ana and Rio Hondo rivers are still full, there is still water running in the rivers, and the water level in the quarries nearby has gone up about 10ft. Woo hoo!!!

Damn I was busy today! I started when I woke up and didn't stop until dinner. It was all little stuff: watering the property, dishes, writing up a grocery list, cutting hubby's hair and giving him a beard trim, walking the dog, fixing dinner, cleaning the kitchen windows.. I didn't even get a chance to order all the stuff I had planned, which was on my "to do" list for the day. Also scolded fear daughter for goofing off most of the day, and made her finish the watering.

But in between I took a look at the "dry stream bead" that I dug out, ran some water in it and it's flowing appropriately. But bc it's about 3" shallower than I had hoped, I came up with an alternate way to stabilize banks and I think it's gonna look great. And one of these days I'll actually get back to working on it.

Damn! You're on a hot streak while I'm on a cold one.

Didn't do much again today, but I at least scheduled some heart tests, my cardiologist follow up and ordered another sensor because this current one seems to be janky too.

I also learned a bit about ketones. I was doing some cleanup around here and found inside a care package my old man got for me a bottle of ketone test strips and decided to try one out. I came up as 15mg/dL "small" which had me a little worried. I thought I wasn't supposed to have any ketones in my pee after going into diabetic ketoidosis before the diagnosis.

Not true. 15mg/dL is fine, and I should actually expect it on days like today where I was low activity and only had 12 carbs all day long.

Really, I'm good up to 80mg/dL on the ketones, and when people are using the strips to test their keto diet they're supposed to get up a lot higher than my 15 if they're trying to burn off fat with the keto diet. My numbers would just signal to them that they're finally starting to burn off the fat.

Everything about food is so weird now. Days when I work hard I can eat a lot of carbs and I actually put on weight. Days where I don't work hard and don't eat carbs are when I weigh myself the next morning and lost weight.

Chugging along on the cleaning and the laundry.... *boring*

Got my last current doctor appointment I needed scheduling scheduled today. Trying to get a real Dr. as an Endocrinologist instead of the borderline street-doc who learned his practice back when JFK was president they stuck me with. Finger's crossed.

This sensor I've got is janky as hell too. Two mornings in a row now it fell beyond low only to shoot right back up again like nothing happened. This time it told me I fell to 41mg/dL from 130 in 15 minutes, and I was still 128 according to the finger prick. Sure enough, 15 minutes later my readings were back up over 130 on the sensor. At least this sensor isn't just flat out crapping out and saying "sensor error" for a half hour to an hour at a time like the last one did. But I can't trust it at all for legitimate readings.

I'm going to need to get more testing strips. I didn't even use any for nearly 40 days while the first 4 working sensors did their thing, except to very occasionally test that they were matching up. I've burned through about 25 of them since last Thursday with these two bunk sensors though. These both came from the same lot number, so maybe there was a problem with the batch.

At least, I hope that's what's happening here.

Battery??

You have a sensor and an amplifier in there somewhere to produce a readable signal.

One thing I've seen that makes a sensor/amplifier unit crap out is bad grounding or broken ground line. Well, that's not the case with your sensor bc it's not grounded, but it DOES use the battery as a voltage reference as well as a power source. Sometimes all it takes is cleaning the battery contacts bc if they build up a little corrosion it throws in a resistance that the unit wasn't designed for. If it's a normal AA or AAA battery(ies) just spinning them in place will often do the trick. If you have a button battery you might need to take it out and clean both the battery and the contacts with a paper towel. If that doesn't work, try changing the battery.

The other possibility is an intermittent contact. Are there any "wired" connections between the sensor and the monitor? Sometimes just unplugging and plugging back in a few times can clean off the contacts.

I don't think the battery is the problem, but once I try a sensor from a new lot I'll at least know if the problem persists or not.

You are completely unable to change the battery on these. They're designed to work for 90 days (or 10 sensors). They're also designed not to allow you to start up a new sensor with it if it detects a problem or it is low on juice.

I do clean off the transmitter contacts with alcohol wipes in between sensors and let it dry, as per the instructions.

Quote:

The other possibility is an intermittent contact. Are there any "wired" connections between the sensor and the monitor? Sometimes just unplugging and plugging back in a few times can clean off the contacts.

There's no wired connections. Inside the plastic enclosure (above the adhesive pad) where you snap in the sensor is two black contacts. On the back of the transmitter is two matching silver contacts that you clean with the alcohol wipes. It's designed in a way where you can put part of the transmitter in and snap it into place without getting any of the (what I assume to be) dielectric grease in between the contacts. That clear gel needs to be in there I'm sure to keep the unit from shorting out when you take showers or take a dip in a pool.

Once snapped into place, I don't believe you can take out the transmitter without ruining the sensor. The way it's designed is to snap tightly into the sensor once you've installed it into yourself. When it's time to change sensors, you peel it off like a bandage, and you can snap the plastic enclosure in half and slide the transmitter out so you can clean it and use it in the next sensor. If you were able to keep taking it out and putting it back in I don't think you'd be able to make or maintain a watertight seal on it for 10 days.

I'll bring up the possibility of a faulty transmitter/battery if I have to call customer service about another one from a different lot number.

Hopefully one day you don't even need batteries for these things anymore. I mean, it does plug right into your body. If they were able to find a way to make it low powered enough they could probably get all the juice they needed right out of the rod that is injected into your abdomen.

Another sensor failure, but we have more data this time...

Looks like while I was away from the thing I went from 138, down to 52 and right back up again to only 92 before it errored out and stopped giving numbers. (That happened 2 or 3 times with the last sensor, but this is the first time it's happened with this one).

I haven't bothered finger pricking myself because I know I'm nowhere near low. Hoping to see this thing finally reconnect and I'll prick myself when that happens.

The new data I got this time is that this is the first time it's happened before I gave myself my 18 units long and 4 units rapid. Every other time it's happened in the last 10 days on the two sensors was somewhere within an hour after the injections. So now I doubt very much it has anything to do with where I'm injecting in relation to the sensor. I couldn't find any warnings online or in the documentation stating that was a thing I needed to worry about anyhow.

So at this point I just need to see if this persists with a new sensor that wasn't part of the same lot. If it does, I will be requesting a new transmitter and inquiring with the company about why this one would allow me to attach it to 3 sensors when there was an obvious problem with it.

It is odd though...

Why does it happen around the same time every morning? It's not the only time it's happened, but once the problem has revealed itself it does happen every morning at roughly around the same time. This current sensor has only done it in the morning, but the previous one did it both in the morning and in the late afternoon/early evening several times as well.

Hubby saw his GP yesterday bc he's been having a problem with his very low heart rate, which has been keeping him from being more active. So he got the recommendation to wean off of one of his meds, woo hoo! Also got an A1C reading which turned out OK. All of those dietary restrictions are paying off, altho it does make menu-planning difficult since I also need to take dear daughter's food sensitivities into account. I've given up on trying to accommodate my food allergies.

Today we're having stir-fried marinated pork tenderloin. Hubby and I are having shredded cabbage/ red pepper/ ginger/ garlic/ spinach/ sesame oil stir fry but dear daughter, bc cruciferous veggies like cabbage and alliums like garlic don't like her, is having "fried rice" with carrot, celery, peas, spinach, and sesame oil.

Sigh.

What I do for my family!

Yesterday was all about shopping. Dear daughter goes to the grocery store with a list but of course can't figure out how to pick out the right packages of chuck roast to make a total of about 3 1/2 lbs so I literally have to yak with her on the phone while she describes the weights availble and I tell her what to do. she tries, she really does.

for myself it was online shopping while I negotiated some big ticket items for/with family not in CA: a pocket battery-powered reciprocating saw and a cordless HEPA vacuum cleaner, as well as smaller items for the family.

But today the weather turned unexpectedly warm so I have to be judicious about yardwork and deciding what to do.

moved some concrete slabs with a lever, a hand truck, and dear daughter's help. The course of the 'stream' is now clear of walkway, groundover etc. temp 77-81 for the forseeable future... warmer than I like but not gonna whinge about weather that you would consider ideal just gonna have to hydrate well and get on with it.

Today, aside from the usual chores, I plan on recovering a rubbery mat-like material that the previous landscaper used to line his 'stream bed' along with more of the decorative stones that he used in the bottom (all alas which got filled in with dirt, and then weeds and grass, due to poor grading). The farther I get with this the more exciting it is. I have poor powers of visualization... I can't imagine what it should look like and work towards that goal. i kind of have to feel my way thru ... start and see what it looks like, adjust and look again etc, but it's at the point where it's already taking shape and i can see the outlines of what it can be,

sorry forthe inconsistent capitalization, one of the shift keys isn't working on this device. i took it apart, there's nothing stuck under it, it's just broken. Two other things you won't see from this device are the numbers five and six.

Well, I DID recover (most of) that rubbery mat and (most of) the decorative stones, but my outlook has changed somewhat. Because the more I dig, the more I see that needs re-grading. Hmmm....

Tomorrow gonna get out some more survey stakes and, with dear daughter's help, measure the drop from the downspout to just where the "stream bed" crosses the pathway. (After that, I know it all downhill ). If I have 3" drop over 10 ft I think that'll be good enough to keep the water flowing away from the house. But there's a significant low spot where the previous "stream bed" used to be, so I have to fill that in, in a way that doesn't puddle water around the foundation.

It's an interesting project, that's for sure!.

Even more strange is that I just went to my brother's place with my dad for a few days and it didn't crap out at all. I brought the replacement sensor with me figuring I'd be changing it out while I was there, but it seemed to have "fixed" itself?

Obviously, being there is different from my routine at home, but I can't think of anything in particular that would have really different except for a change of location.

I also recalibrated the thing back up about 20pts before I left for my brother's place because it was reading chronically lower than it should have been according to the finger pricking tests and I didn't want the damn thing going off the whole time I was there with false readings.

That actually was a good thing because I tested myself quite a few times while I was there and the similarity between the two readings were absolutely within an acceptable range the last few days.

Not only that, but I seem to have "reset" something in my body the first day I was there where I ate only eggs and meat, and had a record low 7 grams of carbs in a 24 hour period.

My highs for the last two nights have only been in the mid 130s. And by working out only 3 times a day for 10 minutes with the 10lb weights while I was there and keeping that up today, I've been able to eat a LOT of carbs, with my first need to do it coming as early as 8:30AM. Just the last 2.5 days of readings have lowered my AGL for the last 14 days down to 119 and the last 2 days themselves were only 107.

I've got some ideas for more tweaks to the diet right now. If I can keep having days this good AND figure out how to finally keep my sleeptime raises at a minimum consistantly, I think I can get my AGL down to healthy person levels, or at least keep them on the low end of what would typically be considered pre-diabetes.

Lazy Sunday for me too...

I suppose I should at least go out to my garage and figure out a game plan for what I want to start working on next.

Really, what I need to do is sand down the wood putty I used in the corners in the porch trim as well as the spackle over the nail holes so I can get that room cleaned up and get a final coat of paint on it. I can't even move my new fridge into the house until that's done and the furniture isn't all cramped in the middle of the porch blocking everything.

Numbers are looking great, and the new sensor I installed last night appears to be accurate upon firing up.

My two week average is now down to 119, with the last 5 days being only 107.

Usual Monday stuff for me. But I need something small to get the hair out of the bathtub drain. Think a small set of pliers would be good. Will look when I am out on my walk.

Sanded down all of the wood putty in the miters, the spackle on the nails and cleaned everything up. I caulked the crown to the wall and the ceiling on two sides of the room and I'll finish that tomorrow and give the window & door trim and baseboard a good cleaning before I put the final coat of paint on everything. Hopefully I can get that all done tomorrow.

One thing I've gotten good at?
Digging up weeds.

I'm creating a NEW 'dry stream bed' to actually lead water away from the downspout to around the base of the oak mound. Something the old streambed didn't do. Digging around the oak mound was easy, (except that I had to go wider and shallower than I has hoped bc of tree roots) but going 'upstream' to the downspout is a challenge. I was having problems geting the channel to slope enough, so I decided to see what was going on with the rest of the area around the foundation and the more i dig, the more problems show up. I have to take out a whole cross-yard 'walkway' of largish concrete slabs bc it's significantly higher than foundation so it acts like a 'dam' holding water against the foundation. Not good. So i'm at the point like with some construction projects; I have to clear everything away from the foundation to about 12'forward ... weeds, shrubs, concrete, groundcover ... and regrade the whole deal before I can REALLY start. i'll have to remove a lot of dirt ... but i can put it on the other side of the yard which is too damn low, so at least there's that.

How are you going to get all that concrete out???

I find the trick to pulling weeds is just practice. You probably have different weeds around you than I do. You just get a feel for which ones need which pulling technique, and you probably couldn't even explain to somebody in written word what that even means since you just get a feel for it.

Yeah. Numbers are pretty great overall right now. I think my body is adjusting to the low amount of carbs I'm feeding it too since I'm still fairly high energy most times of most days.

Got the rest of the trim caulked to the wall and ceiling, then I hit all the patched stuff with a chip brush twice. Got most of the rest of the trim cleaned up. I was kind of low energy today, but that's probably because I was right in the middle of the world's worst air pollution for the day.

I'll put the final coat of paint on that ceiling trim tomorrow and probably get around to painting most of the rest of the trim.

Got to see if I can get my friend to come help me move the furniture soon. I think I'm going to move everything out of that room for a few days and prime and paint the floor out there. I'm not in any huge rush to put a final flooring down out there until I take care of the sand pit outside, but it would be nice to at least have a painted floor that looks better than the dirty plywood until I get around to it.

Ah,the wonders of a long heavy crowbar (or sturdy spade) and a heavy-duty hand truck and maybe a little help. The biggest piece is about maybe 3' long, 1 1/2' wide and 4" thick. It's solid stuff, poured back in the day before they used rebar. Hubby guesses somewhere in the realm of 3500-5000 psi. I'm bad at estimating sizes so I can check tomorrow, but all the other pieces are maybe half that size or smaller. For me the bigger trick is where am I gonna put all this stuff? Build a seating area on the other part of the yard?

Oh, totally. Around here it helps to water o'wise the dirt can be rock hard.

But I'm not going for finesse and trying to pull out all of the roots- except the effing Bermuda grass. Right now I'm just spading and raking it up to get the lay of the land, so to speak, bc I couldn't tell where the dirt was.

That's great news SIX!

Me,I'm just trying to lose a few pounds. I lost a lot on chemo and surgery took off a few pounds of boob and radiation cost a LOT of calories, but now that food tastes as good as its going to considering I have no sense of smell (can't tell garlic from vanilla but I can still taste sweet, salty, sour, bitter, umami, and hot stuff) I've been slowly putting on weight. I'd like to say it's muscle. If only!!

Dropped some stuff of at someone's house in the foothills, and they knew I needed some rocks to stabilize the tree mound, and they offered me a pick. DAMN! but there are lots of rocks there! No wonder they built everything out of these mostly rounded river rocks... walls, foundations, pillars. Anyway, I took my trusty hand truck and got a couple the size of small watermelons and a few smaller ones and I'm gonna go back for more next month. We went out to lunch later and had a NICE time!

CT scan shows some weird calcifications in my lungs, not cancer, but I've never had them before. Maybe it was metastisized tumors that got whacked by chemo and calcified over? Blood test coming up to see if my blood sugar and cholesterol are under control and if my kidneys are still "improved". But I try not to worry about that too much, just take care of myself and do stuff for the family. There's always something to do.
