Hubby has been pricing wood at Home Depot, Lowe's, and our nearest lumberyard and the prices are phenomenal, WHEN IT'S EVEN AVAILABLE. A problem ever since Covid. For example, hubby has been shopping for straight grain Douglas fir which used to be $3/board foot (bdf) and now it's not even being delivered. Prices for wood has more than quadrupled!

What to do kind of depends on how thick you need your spindles and dowels. They need to be heavy enough to keep kids from pushing thru and strong enough to support stair banisters.

For the dowels I guess the best thing to do is select better pieces of premade hardwood dowels from your local hardware store. But for staircases, he suggests going to a lumberyard, selecting your own stock, cutting it into square lengths on your table saw, and then using a router with a round over bit or quarter round to shape it into either a full circle or a rounded square. Maybe leaving the ends square which might make an easier fit into the stairs and banister.

Alternately, table legs might be an option altho I think they might be even more $$$.

Wouldn't it be nice having a lathe?

I could probably round the ends no problem, but my router skills are basic and I've got an ancient and heavy router without a table, so I'd be doing it free hand.

My neighbor was awesome for doing those drawer fronts for me, but I can't ask him to round a couple dozen dowels for me.

I think I'm just going to focus on the overlook for now and look for prices to come down or a great sale and/or clearance bargain in the meantime. I want that overlook done soon so I can finally put my table back in the kitchen, so I might have to bite the bullet and pay around $100 for the wood on that.

I've lived for 12 years against code without a banister, what's another year or two? It's not like I don't have more important things to be doing this winter like adding and changing all the electric in the basement for a dual sump well system in the crawl.

Thanks for the input.

Yeah....

I don't know if I'm going to like this Automatic Mode on the insulin pump.

I thought I'd have to wait until my next sensor to try it, but strangely I got a bluetooth notification days after I'd tried setting up the existing sensor saying that it was trying to communicate. I was due to change my pod early this morning anyhow, so I spent the time to figure out how to get it all connected together without help from the trainer.

PROS:

- One single device for both the CGM and the Pump.

- Access to MUCH more detailed historical information and graphs on the phone than I had with the old receiver that only showed the previous 24 hours with laughable touch screen features. (Although I still get even more data if I log in on a computer than what I get on the phone app).

- My Pump's main screen now shows my current number, so there's no need even to use two separate apps for regular daily functions, which would be 95%+ of the time interacting with it.

- It automatically updates my information via my home wi-fi instead of needing to manually log in and upload my reports when I'm charging the device on my computer.

- All of the above pros are available to me whether in Manual or Automatic Mode.

CONS:

- None... When in Manual Mode.

- 110 mg/dL is the lowest setting I can put for Target.

- In automatic mode, it will completely withhold insulin if I drop below 110 at any point of the day or night, regardless of what my Basal program says to administer.

This is unacceptable to me. 110 mg/dL is a safety feature / ass-covering cop out on the part of the company so they don't accidentally end up killing stupid people. They're simply rounding down to the lowest common denominator.

I've had 3 out of the last 4 days below 100mg/dL for my daily average. With a 110mg/dL safeguard minimum, I would never again have a day within healthy-person range.

I'm either going to have to see if there is a way I can hack the program to remove this safeguard, or I will have to put it in Automatic Mode only between the hours of 9AM and 10PM if not completely abandon it altogether.

Please be careful. I noticed a change in the tone of your posts and I'm concerned about you. If your AVERAGE is under 100 you could be flirting with 70 or lower, which is too low, and could lead to "angry drunk" behavior (a combo of not enuf sugar in the brain and too much adrenaline everywhere.)

Gotta go. A family medical issue to attend.

Really? I'm usually like this, I think.

I think my change in posting habits happened back around May of 2020, to be honest.

Maybe dealing with my friend's dad's passing has something to do with it. Just went to the service today. Didn't stick around too long because that's really not my jam, but I had to pay my respects and give the family hugs.

My range is 70 to 180, and I've spent 92% within range, and 8% low in the last 44 hours, but those CGM's read low on purpose, so I'm thinking maybe 2% actually low.

I'll be careful though. Thanks for the concern.

No problem Sigs.

You weren't wrong though. I did have some lows there. I don't mind having an hour or so under 70 here or there if I'm steady though. But earlier today based off of what I'd plugged in for bolus it ended up getting me down to the mid 50's for a little while there. That wasn't a miscalculation of carbs on my part. But I noticed the other day that you can set a duration for bolus insulin to be administered over the course of "X" amount of hours, and the trainer set mine at 4 hours (or that's just the default).

I really don't want to change that number, but hopefully when they make upgrades to this system you can put in the type of carbs that you're eating and it would deviate from that standard 4 hour time-frame accordingly. Mine today were mostly peanut butter and cereal, which is quite a slow burn... basically on the opposite end of taking glucose tablets which are a near immediate infusion of sugar to your bloodstream.

That's the problem when you're always trying to be low... If the insulin is delivered too quickly for the quality carbs you're eating, you can get lower than you should be getting. But I didn't rush and take any glucose tablets. I let it sit for a while and it ended up getting back up to 115 on its own and then leveling out in the 90s again.

That's nice of your boss to invite you to Christmas, Brenda.

Yeah. You should if you're not doing anything.

I didn't celebrate Thanksgiving more than a handful of times in about 2 decades after my uncle on my mom's side of the family died and the tradition was broken up and usually worked on the day when I had a job. But my friend's family invited me over last year and now it's become like our tradition and I really look forward to it. Haven't gotten a Christmas or Christmas Eve invite yet this year, but I'm still hoping it comes. I know that they fell out of the family loop with Covid themselves, so they may or may not be going somewhere else for Christmas now that everybody finally seems to have gotten over the Covid insanity.

Either way, my aunt and I are going down to visit my brother for a few days the week after Christmas. He doesn't come in for the holidays anymore after he got the cat that destroys everything, and she's never seen his place or the cool little town he lives in before.

Not quite sure if it will be Xmas dinner exactly. But it will be close to then as they are heading to Ontario before the end of the month to see their daughter and granddaughters.

Good. I hope you all have a good time.

Yeah. I just found out last night from my aunt she got her time off for sure. There was a possibility that it wasn't going to happen, but I guess we're good to go. Hopefully the weather decides to cooperate with our plans now.

It will be a little bit colder than the week before Christmas is going to be, but the bottom doesn't appear to fall out until after New Years Day. We just don't want to be driving in some snow storms is all.

My last remaining very elderly uncle is in rehab after falling and cracking some ribs, and my equally elderly aunt is sad at home. They're both in their 90s and very far away.

Almost all of my relatives are 3000 miles away, and given our family health problems and hubby's complete household helplessness, I can't just hop on a plane and visit. All I can do is send cards and letters which are appreciated by the older generation, and texts and chats for the younger folks.

We had a scary medical crisis over the weekend, but daughter is now recovering. My rheumatologist has been looped into my sinus problem so I get to see Infectious Disease and Rheumatology both on the same day first week of January, and maybe I'll get to nail my situation down for good.

Sigh.

A medical funny....

Well, in addition to my nasal/sinus condition and ongoing medical issues, hubby's chronic old-age issues and daughter's pop-up crisis, we ended the week with another medical thing, but this time with hospital humor

My friend in the foothills had a cooking accident: she was taking soup out of the microwave and it (in chemistry terms) "bumped" - it popped out of the container and hit her in the face and elsewhere. When she ran to put cold water in it she noticed a few layers of skin peeling off. Not being able to negotiate driving a stick shift and keeping a cold compress on her face she called 911.

So far, not funny.

Eventually she was xfered to Los Angeles County Hospital for debridement and treatment, and we had to pick her up and eventually take her home. Still not funny...

But, as she told it....

"I was being wheeled (on gurney) down one of those interminable corridors. The ceiling was white... the walls were white ... the floor was white.

And I said 'I'm going down a long ... white ... corridor'

After a moment the ambulance attendant looked down and said 'Don't do that. 'Cause that's a whole lot of extra paperwork for us' "

BWAHAHAHA!
Hospital humor!!!

Here's one for you. I was going into have my wisdom teeth removed at the hospital. I had told the dentist that I wanted to be knocked out for it.

Anyways the OR staff was testing out the heart monitor and it flat-lined which made me ask, "Was that for me?"

Nurse said, "No." Then asked me how I knew the machine was a heart monitor and what the sound was.

Answer, "I watch a lot of "Emergency". I was in high school at the time and that show was running then.

Here's one for you...

I started getting rashes under my CGM around Thanksgiving after using them for months without any problems. So here I was thinking "oh great... maybe my body's attacking something else that it shouldn't be" and worrying that I won't be able to use a CGM anymore.

Then today I do a simple Google search on the issue and find out that it's super widespread, it's been known about for YEARS and it's assumed that they changed adhesive since so many people who didn't have a problem with it before started having issues and even the FDA knows about it and nothing's been done to fix the problem.

Oh... I guess that's probably not funny to most people. It made me chuckle though.

I'm wondering if I got a "bad" batch, since my last 3 in a row did it to me. On a new batch right now, so hopefully the problem goes away.

At least I was happy to see that I wasn't having the same problems from the insulin pump pods. But there could have been a lot of other reasons for that too, since the pods don't inject metal into you and you change them every 3 days instead of 10 days.

At least I was happy to see that I wasn't having the same problems from the insulin pump pods. But there could have been a lot of other reasons for that too, since the pods don't inject metal into you and you change them every 3 days instead of 10 days.

Yeah. Not funny haha like both of your stories.

I got around to priming the shoddy baseboard I had fixed up with plaster and sanded down today, as well as one spot in the living room window that I repaired that needed it. Next I finally completed the arduous task of cutting in that window in all the places that it needed it with an artist's paint brush. Don't know why I thought it would go quicker the 2nd coat than it did the first coat. It didn't.

I don't want to rush that, so I'll probably let it dry overnight at least before I put the final coat everywhere I'm going to use a big brush. Maybe tomorrow.

But since I already have paint out I'm probably going to put the final coat on the overlook base I made a while back and maybe pull out some stuff and continue to work my way around the baseboard in the living room.

I've decided that's going to get 2 coats since I saw today that it could use it. I'm going to caulk it to the wall too since they didn't do that when they installed it and even though most of it looks okay there's a few spots where it could really use it.

Oh... I also finally got around to sanding down wood putty I had put up to repair some holes in the exterior door in the living room as well as the trim. At some point somebody had put up one of those chain lock things, so those holes needed to be repaired, and there was a big hole underneath the deadbolt because at some point there was also one of those large handles installed that wasn't there anymore too. I think I patched that door like 3 or 4 years ago now and just finally got around to sanding it down.

My plan was to at least paint the first coat on the casing today, but I've lost daylight. Maybe I'll still do it. Depends on how much I can brighten the room up. I have no problems making the kitchen bright, but the living room is harder to light up, and any shadows made from my own body in the way could lead to catastrophic results while cutting in, if you saw how the door was situated in the corner of the room.

I finished Christmas cards on Friday last week.

Don't think any of my dad's family still lives around Medicine Hat Alberta which is where my dad and his brothers and sisters were born. Cousins still in Alberta for sure and some in the US, my aunts' children and grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Picture time.

Now that I finished painting the base I made for the overlook today, I'm one step closer to finally having my kitchen finished.

I went into this kind of knowing what I wanted, but the plan for it sort of developed as the day went by.

This is what it looked like when I showed you the last pictures after the trim was up. My friend's dad cut the flooring with a sizable overlap to give me options when I finally got around to this. Boy was he a talented man. He cut that straight freehand. There's no way I would ever attempt doing that without a level like I did later in the day when I knew what I was going to do.

This was a part of one of the large boards I got out of my grandma's garage earlier this year. I've gotten quite a lot of use out of them so far. Unfortunately, what's left of them aren't in the greatest shape, as you can see here.

Unbelievably though, I didn't have to rip this piece down even a hair. When the quarter round was installed on both sides of it, I needed it to be 5 1/8 total, so the board needed to be 4 1/8 and somehow this cut off was exactly 4 1/8 left over from the last time I made cuts off the board. I didn't have any pieces of wood that were long enough for the entire length, so I was going to need to get creative since I wasn't going to buy a 12 foot board at today's prices.

When I'm finished making this thing nobody is going to be able to tell, but whoever installed those side jambs did a piss poor job keeping them plum and level. You can see from my straight cut on the board that it was about 2 degrees wider on the basement side than the kitchen side. It was the opposite problem on the other end...

... but nothing my miter saw couldn't fix.

You can see the two scrap pieces of the 3/4" by 1/2" quarter round I had leftover from casing out the stairway here. I went into this thinking I would be buying more of that, but I ended up rounding down the top of the board on both sides and using 1/2" by 1/2" quarter round for a much nicer looking reveal instead. But I needed these pieces along with my level to make sure everything was perfectly straight from end to end in the meantime.

I haven't even painted this thing yet... Can you even tell where I joined the 2 pieces?

There's my pieces... sanded, primed, painted and ready to go. You can probably tell how I cut the two long boards at 45 degree angles on the end where I would be joining them.

Once I knew exactly where I needed to cut back the flooring I put a heavy pencil mark down and cut it away against the level. I then installed some "shims" made from old kitchen drawer bottoms on top of the sub-floor to make things level when I put the board in. I left enough of the flooring so the 1/2" x 1/2" quarter round would cover it.

There's the two pieces of the base installed and joined together.

And there's the quarter round put on the end of it. Everything patched, sanded and cleaned up and ready for final paint.

A view from the basement side that still needs the trim installed.

The kitchen looks great except for that terrible countertop that needs to be taken care of.

And here's the finished product after painting it today.

And another shot with the basement lights off. Not sure which looks better in pictures.

Boy I'm glad I'm getting so good at cutting paint in. I was pretty much breathless the entire time I painted that against my nice flooring, but I didn't get a single drop where it shouldn't go.

Nice clean edge there, huh?

All I need to do now is get my poles and I can finally finish that up and get it up to code after 12 years.

I'm also going to eventually make a new threshold to join the flooring with the hardwood floor in the living room. The piece that was in there over the old sheet is just too high off the floor. Both my friend and his dad told me that they wouldn't put that back because it's a tripping hazard. I never tripped on it myself, but I could see where they're coming from. I did have to lift the vacuum cleaner over it, and it was probably at least 1" tall.

I've just kind of been using one of those throw rugs as the threshold for the last few years.

Hoo boy...

My body's wrecked.

I probably shouldn't have kept working until after 10PM, but sometimes I just get on a roll and go a little overboard.

So many awkward positions held for too long in the work yesterday. Not too much on that overlook in the pictures except for when I was cutting in next to the floor, but all along the baseboard, particularly where I had all my plugs in the wall and I had to work around them while cutting in the baseboard to the floor after I was up on that step ladder for hours cutting in the window to the glass earlier in the day.

I don't know how much I'm going to get done today, but I'm going to try to push through it. Everything is still pulled out from the walls where I left it yesterday and I'd like to get my living room put back together.

I need to caulk the baseboard to the wall at the tops since that was never done by the previous owners and re-paint that a 2nd time.

Fortunately, I don't need to paint anything on the window anymore, but I will have to scrape what little paint I did get on the glass off of it, then I've got to clean the window again so I can get the film back up.

My dumb ass got paint on the film years back when I primed the window, so now that it's down I've got to see if I can get the paint off of it before I put it back up. It's only primer, so my chances are better than if it were paint. Nobody ever noticed it in the last few years because of the way the film is designed, but I know it's painted and I'd like to get it cleaned up before putting it back up.

I'm thankful for microfiber towels. I don't know how I'd get all the various particles and misc crud off the back of the film before putting it back up without them.

Man... really not looking forward to caulking those baseboards. Caulking trim to walls with finished paint on them already is one of my least favorite things to do. Gotta power through it.

The only thing I'd ever need to move furniture around in the living room in the future after this is if I choose to resurface the hardwood floor like I did on the 2nd floor. Everybody else tells me that it's fine, and even though 90% of the floor looks great there are some bad spots. It's nowhere near as bad as the 2nd floor under the carpeting was was though. It would probably be a long time off before I did it if I do. The more I get finished in this house, the more I treat the rooms like a museum. I hated it when my mom and step-dad did that when I was a kid.

Out for my walk on a sunny day. Couple of things to do. Not sure if my area got rain last night but at least its dry right now.

Hoping to get the bathroom vacuumed when I get in today. It needs it.

Thanks Brenda.

That's the type of work I really like doing. Building things. And figuring out how to do something that I never did before with just my tools and what I had lying around the house. I probably could have got some ideas and inspiration from YouTube, but that was such a unique situation that I don't think there would have been too much help there. So I'm surprised I got it all done except for final paint in one day since I really didn't have a clue what I was going to be doing when I started it.

Once again, I think I severly overestimated how much I can get done in a day. It's already after 4PM and I haven't even started painting anything yet. I got all the baseboards caulked to the wall, which is by far my least favorite part of this whole thing, so that's nice. I also got the window glass scraped and put my privacy film back up so that's great.

Not sure if I'm going to get to painting those baseboards today or not though...

I'm going to use my artist paintbrush on the tops of them where I caulked, so that's going to be an extremely long process. Not sure if I feel like working until midnight tonight or not yet.

Finished it all and got all the furniture back in place.

I was thinking that I was going to put a coat of paint on the exterior door, but after rubbing it down with a microfiber towel I noticed that it has some evidence of previous condensation or something on it... almost like something was spilled on it. I never spilled anything on it, but it might be from back when I didn't have A/C and it got real humid during the summer.

I'm going to have to wash it down before painting it. I didn't feel up to that today.

That's great work, SIX!

I think you have good visualization skills. You're able to imagine what something will look like, and how it needs to be put together in order to work out. And even if it doesn't come to you ahead of time, you can piece it together as you go. IMHO that's the key to flexible learning, which you seem to do quite easily.

Baseboard work ... it's prolonged work in a stress position. No wonder you're tired!

I think you might be right. Also, I think tempering expectations and knowing what your limits with your tools and budget as well as your skills are is important too. It's one thing to be able to visualize things, but they need to be grounded in reality.

That's not something I was always able to do very well. I remember making posts in here back when fff.net was still very much more alive with Wish and JO about the work I was doing and thinking how cool it would be since there's no proper dining area in my house layout to turn that room you see in my basement into the set of the mess hall on Firefly.

Yeah... that was never going to happen.

Quote:

Yeah. Not tired so much as sore. I can't even explain that position very well in words, but a lot of the time was the left hand extended over my head somewhere for balance as I would lay down after dipping my brush and getting paint on the main base before it dripped so I could be almost eye-level with the quarter round shoe and make sure I was cutting it all the way to the bottom without brushing the floor or dripping paint onto it.

Add to that, the living room is the largest room in my house, and because I had stuff plugged into walls while I was working I had to get into some REALLY awkard positions around all those wires. And corners are a big 'ole pain!!!

Yesterday wasn't any better than the day before either. I thought I could get away with not having to be so careful to get all the way to the bottom of the shoe on the 2nd coat, but it probably took me even longer because I did a better job lighting up the room and saw all the spots where I didn't actually get to the bottom of it and had to make that right. Really.... just a bunch of crazy work since I couldn't see that anything was missed at the bottom when my eyeballs weren't 2 feet away from it and nobody who's been over even realized I'd never painted the baseboard in the first place until just now. (It looks so much better now... at least I'd hope that people notice something different when they next see it, even if they don't know what it is... like when you get a new haircut and you're trying to fish out a compliment from somebody who knows something is different. )

I'm tired too though. Haven't been sleeping very well for the last few days. And my Aunt called me at 6:30AM about something arguably important and I never really got back to sleep after that even though I had trouble finally falling asleep until after 2AM.

Oh well... Not going back to sleep now.

Priming that door is going SLOW....

Lot's of cutting in around glass. The trick isn't to worry about not getting any paint on the glass. That's going to happen because you've got 1/8" lip around the glass that you want to make sure gets covered. The trick is to not leave any primer or paint pooling up anywhere. Not only does that look bad on the finished product, but if you're not careful when scraping the glass you can actually pull paint off your door and then it's going to look bad no matter what you do.

All that's left is to prime the surface now. That will take 10 minutes tops, only because I'm painting with a brush instead of a roller.

I can pretty much move right on to paint after that and just start where I started priming a few hours ago.

The door won't be done today, but the entire room is going to look a lot better.
