Got back around 4pm today. I won the second round on my pick up game of mah jong which was nice.

Tomorrow is my regular game and then some errands after.

Back and done a while ago for today. Terrible morning at mah jong. Oh well. There is always next week.

Got a couple of messages back to the ones I sent on Face Book. My cousin has been sick and a friend has been uber busy over Christmas. I will not see my friend until late in January to exchange Christmas gifts.

I hope you find them! Lamb chops are so special around here.

A traditional item for New Year's Eve is pickled herring. It's supposed to bring good luck, and fortunately I really like it.

Unfortunately there is not a lamb chop to be seen at my local grocery store. So, I had to go with pork chops. Oh well. The store said they should have some in later in the week. I hope so.

Lamb chops are my tradition that I started. *L* When my mom was a live it was usually ham for New Year's.

Thanks.

We had a really good time. It wasn't just sitting around watching movies and TV shows like it usually is when it's my old man. We only watched one movie while we were there on the 2nd night, but we went driving around the town and showing her around, going out to eat and just talking most of the time.

It's so nice taking a break from politics. 2 1/2 days of not knowing at all what's going on in the world is a nice little reset. I enjoyed that part so much that even though I've been home almost 2 days now I didn't come back here until now.

I'm probably going back up to the store to get more paint on rebate today. I have no idea when I'm ever going to get things set up so I could ever actually do the basement, but if I had just one more gallon of each color and white ceiling paint I should be able to paint the whole thing with that. All I should need at that point is another gallon of High-Gloss white for the trim, but no point in buying that now if it's not on sale.

As long as you store it right paint tends to last a long time. The two gallons I'd bought back in 2018 or 2019 and finally got around to using last year were still basically brand new. The inside of the lids did develop a little bit of rust on them since they were metal, but they're all plastic lids now, so whatever I buy should still be good by the time I get to them.

Sounds like a lovely visit and also a visit with a purpose. Sometimes that purpose propels you to do more than you would have otherwise, and makes it more enjoyable.

They still had plenty of paint, so no worries there.

So after rebates it will be 4 gallons of eggshell and 3 gallons of flat white for ceilings and only $78.

Got some other stuff while I was there that's either free or only a buck after rebate too. I should have about $120 coming back to me with just those last two visits.

Probably just going to relax for a day or two and maybe try to figure out what my next step is going to be on the house.

Ugggggghhhh...

Sick today.

I think I had signs of it at my brother's, but the air was pretty dry in his apartment so I blamed it on that. My aunt has been a little under the weather for a few days herself, and she almost never gets sick.

I don't think it's the flu or covid or anything like that. At least I hope not. Usually stuff like that hits me like a truck and this has just been a slow decent into misery. No fever or anything, just super low energy and some coughing and sneezing. Maybe a little bit of joint pain.

At least my brother isn't sick. Hopefully this goes away in a day or two.

I don't need much convincing. I really can't do much of anything right now. I'm going to have to change my insulin pod in about 6 hours and I'm really not looking forward to even doing that.

I'm in-between house projects right now, so I don't have something nagging at the back of my head to get done at the moment, which is nice. I've got a doctor's appointment on Friday and was hoping to have my old man over this week too. Hopefully it goes away before then. Not feeling too hopeful about it at the moment now though since it just keeps getting worse every day.

This is a weird one. I've got a lot of the symptoms I'd have from the flu, but I never got a fever and it was a very slow crawl to feeling as bad as I do right now. Usually when I get this sick I've pretty much got a fever the second I start feeling bad which goes away after about 3 days and then it takes another 3 or 4 days to feel 100% again.

I think I finally hit the point where I can't actually sleep anymore either after sleeping most of the day and night away for the last 2 days or so. That's always fun. I've been in and out of sleep for the last 2 hours like half dreaming and half awake and the dreams tend to get really strange in that state.

It'll be fine. Just need to rough it for a day or two more. At least I still felt good enough to get a bunch of shopping done after the trip to my brother's, so I'm not going to have to go out into the cold and snow to pick up anything.

Well, in the main grocery store I deal with the lady said she and another person forgot to put in an order and they couldn't do anything about it until after New Years. There is a little butcher shop in my area as well and maybe they just couldn't get their hands on any.

Been being ping-ponged between specialists all week, literally all day today between infectious disease and rheumatology and then the lab bc the rheumatologist ordered a fuckton of blood tests and urinalysis. And all I want is for my nose to be unblocked so I can get a halfway decent night's sleep.

Is that too much to ask???

Dr Infectious Disease and Dr Rheumatologist were supposed to talk today but when one wasn't busy the other was. I was left under the impression that Dr ID was supposed to Rx an antibiotic for me and Dr R was supposed to Rx a special med that would help me produce more tears and thinner mucus to help my nose drip but when I went to the pharmacy neither one had been ordered. And i have to wait a week for the blood tests to come back for Dr R to decide what, if anything, to do. It would help to have a bipopsy but Medicare hasn't approved surgery yet.

Meanwhile, everything is growing together. I got so desperate I stuck a cotton swab waaaay up my nose to punch thru the whatever it is that's growing my nose shut. Bled like crazy but at least it opened up a little hole and relieved some of the pressure.

Anyway, tomorrow I'm going to press Dr ID for a plan, and press Dr ENT's surgical coordinator about that approval. If necessary I have a spare packet of steroids that I can use, but not gonna use it until i know what the plan is so I don't screw up any testing or surgery. I can always stick a cotton swab up my nose again.
*sigh*

Certainly not to rub anything in, but despite being sick all week I had a GREAT visit at Dr. Endo today.

I figured my blood pressure would be off the charts with the illness, but it was only 126/75. Higher than the last few visits, but still way lower than I chronically was before my diabetes diagnosis.

I gained 4lbs since last visit, so I'm finally over 160lbs after getting all the way down to 143lbs back in March of last year.

But the best part....?

My A1C today was 5.6%!

Back in March it was 11.7%. So from March to my first visit with the new doctor I went from literally off the American Diabetes Association's chart to "pre diabetes" and now I'm in the Normal range.

Hehe.

He had to make sure to stress that I still have diabetes and I'm low because of the diet and the medicine.

Yeah... I know, Doc.

The cool thing is that what I've learned I've been able to teach other people.

My old man didn't know what the A1C numbers meant before with his tests because it was never pointed out as a problem to him during his visits. But when he went through his tests last year he found out that he was 5.7%.

Granted, this was before he had started working out in earnest every day and sticking to it, but it was after he lowered his gluten intake by a significant amount after I finally convinced him to try it for his general aches and pains he blamed on old age (which did wonders for him, btw).

But I let him know that 5.7% was getting pretty dangerously close to pre-diabetes, and I was actually surprised his doctor didn't mention that to him.

So today when I called the old man up and let him know the good news, when I asked him to guess my A1C he said 6.2%, and I said "nope. 5.6%... I'm lower than you are now".

That's when he told me that he forgot to mention what it'd gone down to when he finally got the results from his last visit about a month ago. He's down to 5.4% now.

I'm really proud of him, actually. He's lost about 50 lbs in the last year or so with the working out and being more mindful of what he eats. I wouldn't call him skinny just yet, but he's probably only about 15lbs away from it now.

3 years ago I couldn't convince him to stop eating so much gluten for the life of me, but for some reason he finally did it. 2 years ago I couldn't convince him to try working out again because he had convinced himself that he was way too old to change anything, but then he did it and has stuck with it this whole time.

He's probably going to outlive me now.

They are good.

Learning to cook simple things isn't that hard. Mind, I started learning when I seven years old. First thing I learned how to make for myself was french toast. Still one of my favourite things to eat even with my egg allergy.

I plan on it considering how long it took me to find some.

That sounds so good.

I really need to learn how to cook. Enjoy those chops!

They are good.

Learning to cook simple things isn't that hard. Mind, I started learning when I seven years old. First thing I learned how to make for myself was french toast. Still one of my favourite things to eat even with my egg allergy.

I plan on it considering how long it took me to find some.

Yeah... It's not the learning part that's the problem for me. It's the actual desire part. I always say that I'd love to cook something, but when it gets to standing in front of a stove I always find myself thinking there's few things I'd rather be doing less than cooking like cleaning my toilet or my bath tub.

I know that is rediculous and that a lot of people even find cooking quite enjoyable, and I don't think anybody ever said the words "I love cleaning toilets", but that's just the way it is...

I think my best analogy for it I can come up with in my mind is that I was always able to watch a basketball game, even getting deeply involved in the sport for a few years in my teens because it was such a fast paced and high scoring game. But sports like football were way too slow with too many breaks where everybody was just standing around and sports like hockey and soccer just had a whole lot of nothing going on all game with those low scores.

Standing in front of a stove waiting for fire to do its fire thing to me is like trying to sit through a soccer game.

It's not that I don't cook. All I do is eat at home, so I do cook, and I rarely even use the microwave for anything. But anything I make is extremely fast or pretty bland. Stuff that I can just set and forget and come back to every once in a while to make sure I didn't burn it too bad.

I trust you enjoyed those chops?

I understand. I love to cook and bake but both have become a chore when it is only for one person.

Oh, I did. They were very fresh and very tasty.

Sigh.

I wish I could taste food. Or smell flowers, or dirt, when it gets wet. Or anything.

Well, I will get some music on later. But that publisher the lady helping me sent me in a email looks okay. I'll let her know next week that we should try it.

This has been an ongoing problem for at least 8 years. It's bc of recurring sinus infections. Each infection has taken more and more of my sense of smell, this latest one deleted it. And I used to have a FANTASTIC sense of smell.

So, just FYI, I can still "taste" food: fruit tastes sweet. Chocolate tastes sweet and a bit bitter. Cheese tastes salty, a bit sour, some cheeses taste a bit bitter, and of course I taste umami. Grilled steak tastes salty and umami.

But all of the things that we think of as "taste" are actually SMELL. Garlic, vanilla, cumin, chocolate, grilled meat... all of them are smells. I couldn't tell you if I was smelling vanilla or garlic. I can't tell if food is spoiled. I couldn't smell a gas leak.

Having done flavors and fragrance analysis and been an inventive cook ... it doesn't help to know what I'm missing

I try not to dwell on it. My close family members know not to rhapsodize about how good something "tastes" or how flowers smell. But every once in a while, I mourn.

Well, enough of feeling sorry for myself, we all have our crosses to bear. Even SECOND.

*****

On a positive note, I actually managed to get out an do yardwork.

Nah, nothing to worry about. It was more rain than snow by the time I got out and with it still raining what is on the ground will be gone by later this afternoon.

Back and finished for today but I really hate Mondays. Don't know if I have mentioned that.

It started with the pharmacy. They had the rest of my seizure meds ready but the lid they put on the bill bottle was a regular one that you push down on and twist. That isn't too much of a big deal I told them and left.

Got in and there was a message on my answering machine. Dentist wanted to change my appointment to tomorrow but I can't do that. Called them back and the buttons on the phone didn't want to work, but I got through and long story short there my appointment is still set for next Tuesday.

Then the neurologist's office called with an in person appointment but in a different city that I can't get too as I do not drive and have no one that I can all on to drive me. They just opened this office in this second city. I also proved to the lady over the phone that I can't hear properly because it took me a couple of minutes figure out what city she was talking about. So, she put me on a short list for a early phone appointment. Arrrrggghhhh!!!!!
