Yeah. Renfield was a huge box office bomb. Worst return on a big budget studio film in 2023, actually.

Dear daughter became a huge Nic Cage fan after seeing him in National Treasure. She loved him in Ghost Rider. Those aren't my kind of films, but, amazingly, I thought he was good in them.

Looking at the forecast going out the next month was a pleasant surprise last night. Just a few days ago when I had looked there were a lot more days in the low-to-mid 20's in the near future with a lot more nights in the single digits to low teens than there are right now. Yuck... We got more sloshy snow last night. I knew something was up when I saw the lights of a plow going down the street past my house at around 1AM.

I already bathed my car and the undercarriage with salt the other day. I think I'll put a pause on picking up those 2 boards I need and other errands until the rain (hopefully) washes a lot of that away the next 3 days.

It's not like I don't have another big project ahead of me now.

I sanded down the patch in the ceiling yesterday but didn't bother putting a 2nd coat on it because I didn't get all around the room to prep for the rest of the mud on the ceiling and the walls. That's the biggest thing on the agenda today.

Yesterday I did take the panel off the breaker and network box and spent a few hours cleaning them off. First scraping whatever Great Stuff I could with my 5-in-1 tool, then using Canola Oil to take off all the adhesive residue from a sticker the bank placed on the front of it after it was foreclosed on (lol... yeah... finally did that over 12 years later). At some point I stopped trying to be careful with the finish and just sanded off all the great stuff, finish be damned. I even "rounded" the edges of the breaker plate, since they were SHARP in some spots and I could see myself or somebody else actually slicing their hands on it when taking the panel off (and being preoccupied with trying to take it off while not damaging what will ultimately be a really nice finished housing for it).

After that, I made my marks on the drywall with a level and used my multi-tool to widen the gaps around the panels by 3/4". This will be enough room to ultimately install jambs and trim around the panels with enough room to get your fingers in there and take them off if you needed to. Once I get my generator plug on the outside installed in the spring, I probably won't ever have to take that panel off again, but I do want everything to work as it should while looking as good as I can make it in the end.

So I think my goals are to finish scuff sanding the walls and ceiling, mudding the 2nd coat on that hole I patched the other day, mudding anything else I've found needed mudding, and then cleaning the windows so I can caulk them. That's probably as far as I'll get for the day, and since I'm going to need time for stuff to dry I probably wouldn't be able to do much else after that even if I felt like it.

If I can get that done, I should probably be able to put a coat of paint on the ceiling tomorrow, even if that hole needs one more skim coat of mud that would dry quickly with my furnace kicking on. I should also be able to give all the trim around the windows and the foundation shelf a coat of finish paint tomorrow too. I'll still have to use some wood putty in two spots to even out the bad spots I mentioned on that, but I want to see what it looks like after one coat of paint. I have a small container of wood putty I bought a month or so ago, but I didn't account for this work when I'd bought it and that was for something else. I may choose to take that back and buy a bigger tub after I see what I'm going to need, since that might be justified.

Going well so far...

Got most of the sanding of the walls and ceiling done. Kind of "stuck" right now on sanding off all of that adhesive from the back side of the duct tape I'd used to seal off the basement from the upstairs when I remediated the mold. I'm putting mud up there anyway since the tape also peeled off a lot of that in the same spots and I've got to fill all the staple holes too, but just in case I want to make sure the adhesive is gone so nothing separates after all the work.

I have a few ceiling cracks by the stairwell from settling too, which I don't even remember if they were there when I bought the place or not. I never did paint that ceiling, just the walls. Even though there are no walls on the bottom half of the basement outside of that room, I'm probably going to do ceiling repair all the way down the hallway to the basement bedroom since there are dividers to that room, the bathroom and the laundry room down there, and then I could paint the entire ceiling at once

Probably won't bother caulking windows today. I'm still going to have a lot of dust falling with all the ceiling sanding I'm going to be doing. I'll probably caulk that tomorrow after the sanding is done and I clean everything up.

So hopefully if all goes well I have the ceiling painted and the windows caulked tomorrow. Then I'll be able to finally move on to painting the walls and trim.

It's only a 20 minute walk and I shouldn't be complaining as it is down hill. I came back up the same way, so less strain on my legs and feet. That side of the hill is a little lower in that area.

There is a transport for seniors but there is a lot of paperwork that needs doing so you can use it. I'm not ready for it yet.

Three days of rain totalled to 2.5" in our backyard. I'm sure the plants are happy.

Unfortunately I have three, yes THREE doctor appts this week, and dear daughter had one. One is for my frigging sinuses. I HOPE the specialists will stop bouncing me between them and actually SOLVE the problem sometime soon, since this was brought to their attention last August! *drums fingers*

One is for a routine echocardiogram and doctor followup, since one of my treatments can be cardiotoxic.

They sure take a big chunk out the the week!

So, WHICH ceiling are you working on? I thought they were all done?

The room in the basement that you can see from the overlook and stairway that is mostly finished except for the baseboard and the trim that goes over the bottom half of the wall on top of the drywall (more baseboard).

The ceiling was basically destroyed. I had used duct tape and staples to seal off the basement when I ripped out 55 contractor bags worth of moldy drywall and insulation, and when I'd pulled it off it ripped a lot of the paint off and left adhesive up there and I'm just now getting to that over 12 years later. I'd also accidentally put a hole in the ceiling when I fell through a hole in one of the closets where somebody appeared to cut a "secret" hole in the floor. It was a careless mistake I'd made while making a video of all the work I'd done upstairs for my mom. I strafed into the closet to show her the motion sensing LEDs that I'd installed in the closet and my foot went right through it.

I also had to do a lot of touchups around the walls where the ceiling paint had flaked too.

It all started because I want to get those last 3 pieces of trim I bought up on the basement side of the overlook, but when I realized how close the top piece was going to be to the ceiling and how hard it would be to paint that wall after the trim is up, I decided to do a ton of other things in that room first.

Other than that room nothing is done in the basement. Pretty much just bare studs everywhere. I only put drywall up in that one room since you could see it from the 1st floor.

I'd show you pictures, but it's all pretty boring right now. Tons of work with little payoff. It does look a ton better now, but until paint starts going up you get very little satisfaction on prep work. I might get paint up on the ceiling by Thursday if I keep at it. Probably won't start painting trim until Friday. But by sometime next week it should be finished.

Worked late tonight....

I made a HUGE mess of things earlier. Another bad side-effect of the open floor plan here.

Tons of sanding on the ceiling needed to be done. The good news was I didn't need a 3rd coat on the hole in the ceiling, and I only needed the 1 coat on all the damage from the tape and staples. My entire 1st floor was coated in the stuff though. Fortunately though it seems that it all was on the ground level and didn't get up on my countertops or furniture.

Got all the floors clean on the 1st and basement floors before I did anything else and shook out my throw rugs outside. Oh... but that was after I used a microfiber rag to wipe all the dust off the ceiling and walls with one hand while using my shopvac to pick it all up.

I had about 1/5th of a gallon of "ceiling" primer left, so I cut in all the corners to the ceiling and walls and I also hit all the spots on the walls that were patched and even cleaned up a lot of the trim with it too as I went along. Then I used one of those small hotdog rollers to roll out over all the big spots that needed primer. It's not going to look good until the actual paint is up there since the old paint and the primer are off-color and even a different sheen, but as far as the damage goes the fix looks perfect now.

Worthy of showing pics now, but I'm beat and I haven't eaten or showered yet. Maybe tomorrow, but at that point I'll probably have the ceiling painted. I'll get around to getting some pics up eventually.

Yeah... I'm in pain today. So glad that mudding and sanding overhead is all done now. I'm still going to go down there and work today, but my old man wanted to come by this week and I'm going to call him and let him know he can stop by tomorrow. It's a good excuse for a break. Painting is going very well. I love this part.

It's exciting when you get the real transformative stuff. I'm hitting all the trim with this ceiling paint as I'm going along too, even though I'm going to put two coats of my finish paint on it. Just finished that, in fact. In no huge rush to finish the first coat on the ceiling now since I'll want that to dry before caulking begins. Really though, if I don't feel the trim dried enough I can just go back and do the 2nd ceiling coat before I get to caulking. I really would like to get to the caulk earlier than later though, since that's the part I'm more likely to put off for another day if it starts getting too late.

Now I just have to hope that spring cooperates with me and/or the fixes I've done around the foundation and the grading holds the water at bay until I get the sump situation all worked out.

Most of this work will be okay if I do take on water, but it would be a shame if any got on the bottom pieces of drywall once this is all done.

I thought I'd be using one of the cans of white flat that I'd just bought for about $10 each after rebate a few weeks ago, but I found an unopened can of ceiling paint that I forgot I'd bought back in 2019 and never used, so might as well use that now. It looked suspiciously gray in the can, but I did a little test on my white trim and it's white. Weird.

Boy... rolling that second coat after caulking is going to be a tall order.

I forgot how much leaning backward I do when I roll out ceilings, and with the state I was in this morning that wasn't helping. Plus, I have a lot of stuff in the way in the center of the room with my horses and miter saw and the other table, with no real place for any of it to go if I don't want to bring it all back in the garage (which I do not want to do), so I've got to work around all of that instead of rolling out a ceiling in an empty room which I much prefer to do. (I wasn't planning on actually working on that room this winter until about a week ago).

I really only want to clean up that paint once though, so I'm going to struggle through it I think. I already have my old man coming tomorrow so I'll be taking it easy and one of the weekend days my aunt is coming over and I probably won't work on the house then either. The only "work" I have planned this weekend is going back and helping my friend dehoard his dad's garage, and since it will be warm this weekend it's not going to be a miserable thing.

Hopefully caulk goes well and relatively quickly so I can cut that ceiling in one last time and roll it out before it gets too late.

Caulking to fix some pretty shoddy trim work, but it's going exceedingly well today.

That trim actually will look really nice once it's all repaired and painted.

All the "shelving" on the outside walls and various trim around it is done, as well as one of the two windows. Just have to do the other window and then I've got to get some backer rod in behind the top frames and seal that off as best I can. Little hard to do with the top of the trim so close to the ceiling, so I'm sure that's why nobody did it before. I have to be especially careful now with that caulk gun since I have the first of two finsh coats of paint on the ceiling.

I've got one more place that needs quite a bit of caulk, so I might do that before I do the tops and spend down some of that tube so the center rod isn't sticking out as far in the back as to minimize the chance of collateral damage.

And I found a half tube of liquid nails in the basement that went missing a while ago. I put it in the wrong box when I was done. Dumb. I put up a few pieces of trim with caulk instead of the liquid nails and I was worried I might not have enough to get the job done today, but I will so it all works out. Now I can use that liquid nails to put the 3 pieces of trim up on the other side of the overlook next week.

Boy... even if I don't do the rest of the basement for another 12 years, I'm going to have to spend a few hours caulking the hell out of the other 3 windows. The difference is night and day. It's not even cold by those two windows anymore when it was just a few hours ago. I can't even imagine what the difference would have been a few weeks ago when we were -35 overnight.

It was a tricky job at the top, but easier than I imagined it would be.

Glad I got the caulking done in the middle of paint coats. I still have it in me to paint the ceiling tonight, but had I just been getting around to caulk right now I would have called it a day.

The ceiling appears not to even need a 2nd coat, but I'm sure in the right light there are still some spots that could use it. It looks awesome.

Just got to roll out the ceiling and I can finally clean up for the day. Managed to move some of the stuff out of my way so it will be easier this time.

I hit all that trim with the ceiling paint too as I went along now that it was caulked and it already looks up to my standards without the final paint on it.

Looking forward to hanging out with the old man and taking a break tomorrow.

Finally done and cleaned up. Yeah. I'm going to be feeling this tomorrow. The back was not liking that second roll out. Oh well... That's what I get for working until 10 or 11PM two nights in a row when I haven't taken a day off for who knows how long.

I gotta get out for sure tomorrow and stock up on my usual food too. I've kind of been riding the glucose roller coaster the last few days without my normal portions, and that f'ing thing is really getting annoying. I'm considering going back to just injecting with the pens because the Pod app won't work unless you give it access to do alarms at full blast 24/7 and I'm really tired of it. I did just fine without it and it's really becoming too annoying to justify anymore. Maybe I'll look into modding the software first. I'm sure it's hackable.

Pretty busy with other things up through the weekend, but I should be painting trim on Monday and have that room done well before next weekend.

If you can believe it, I'm scheduled for my THIRD sinus/ nasal surgery. I hope this one sticks. I hate my nose

Yeah. It's too bad I don't do this all the time, but when I'm on a roll things come together pretty quickly.

I actually didn't feel bad today, which surprised me. Cleaned my house up before my old man came by and we watched Contact. I'd never seen it before. Maybe he built it up too much or something but I wasn't super impressed with it. It's always interesting watching a critically acclaimed movie from my teenage years though and fun to point out all the funny styles of the time or how certain events wouldn't even be possible to put in a story anymore because of technology we take for granted today.

Did all my shopping right after he left and got the good deals and my two boards I need for the overlook.

And I finally managed to get the whole crew to come out to my friend's place for a few hours of pool. First time we've all been in the same room for about a year and a half. It was a great time. My buddy's wife sent me home with enough food for two dinners too.

Looks like my aunt doesn't need me to do that thing for her since she got somebody at work to do it for her, so she may not be coming out since it's pretty rainy and chilly this weekend. So I'll be going to help my friend out tomorrow or Sunday and maybe just relax the other day before getting back downstairs. No huge rush on it since I should easily be able to finish everything in that room except for the stairs and the banister before next weekend when it's going to be in the high 40's and I'm going to get that overlook all cut and routered and ready to paint.

After that I should probably get to the electric in the crawl space. I really want to have that set up so the first moment we get a dry spell and I don't have ground water I can dig that 2nd well and get the second sump installed. One step closer to an eternal dry basement.

Out for my walk in the rain. Got massive amounts of it coming in. Areas on Vancouver Island getting well over 100mm of it. Also up the coast to Whistler. Parts of the province are bracing for some flooding as the warm temps and rain will lead to snow melt.

What's happening isn't a total atmospheric river but a partial one. Still nasty and environment Canada is watching the situation.

First of all, it's important that you use DISTILLED water or BOILED tap water, because regular tap water and "deionized" or "purified" or "spring" (or whatever descriptor they use besides "distilled) water are actually germy. Psuedomonas and serratia marcescens both thrive in water. Its ok for drinking bc your stomach acid kills them, but you don't want either of them in your nose bc they're hard to get rid of.

I don't know what you have on hand, but I use the Neil Med squeeze bottle and saline packets. Regular table salt has too many additives (iodine, starch, calcoum silicate anti- caking agents) to use in your nose. You can make your own solution using PURE salt (like kosher salt) and baking soda, but those packets are already premeasured for the bottle size, and finely ground to dissolve quickly, and you can make it as you need it.

Just my $0.02.

BUSY, BUSY, BUSY.
But bc my time is being divided between my Dr appts, dear daughter's Dr appts, housework and cooking, yardwork and office cleanup, I haven't finished anything or accomplished much. There's still souch to do, and since this is"weed season" I'm trying very hard to stay ahead of it and not let it get out of hand.

The paper and mulch works well to stop weeds. In fact, the cardboard works pretty well too, but you have to be SUPER careful not to leave even the teeniest gap bc weeds will sprout thru it.

Anyway, I recycled a kitchen-sized bin of pape. But today and until next Thursday it's yardwork in between appointments and daily chores. Thursday it's predicted to rain again.

Hubby made me a beautiful cutting board to replace my old wooden one that's coming apart at the glue joints. It's awesome!

Oh BTW SIX, I found a weed spray that I'm a lot more comfortable using than glyphosate. It's more expensive but it acts within 24- 48 hours, so I can see where I missed and respray. Also, I was looking for something that could be used in organic gardens, and while this product doesn't have OMRI certification, being the chemist that I am, I looked up its Safety Data Sheet (SDS) - which is supposed to list all chemical hazards - and found that it was 80% of a combination of C8 and C10 straight chain saturated organic acids, which are derived from coconut oil, and 20% "other". (Probably a surfacant of some kind to help it mix with water bc it's pretty oily.) I have to assume since they didn't list what the "other" was and didn't claim it was proprietary that it's considered non hazardous.

Unlike glyphosate, it doesn't migrate thru the plant, it only "burns" the leaves, so if the weed has a substantial root system where it can store sugar and nutrients, it won't work. Not all weeds are susceptible, but right now my big problem is annual grasses like foxtail which are just sprouting. I'll use my flame thrower in back, where the neighbors can't see me because somebody complained last time I used it up front.

Today my plan is to spend some quality time decluttering the office, which means filing all the papers I haven't filed for over a year, tossing all of old papers I don't need anymore, and recycling some bottles and containers I haven't used a won't need.
Then I plan on sitting on dear daughter's neck so she gets rid of all the recycling built up in the house from various deliveries (she's very laggardly with that). THEN I plan on doing some digging in the front yard bc I took a look where the water was flowing during the last rain event and it was going on an unintended direction.

Then it's dinner prep time!

The past number of weeks have been going like that!

But one good piece of news: I had my last cardiac followup. From now on my care will be transferred to my regular doc. So that's one appointment off my list!

Hubby and dog emerge from bedroom.
Walk/jog the dog. (We usually go about a half mile. Her normal pace is a brisk trot, which for me is a slow jog or FAST walk).
Make hubby his favorite Sunday b'fast: four fried eggs with the yolks still runny, and two pieces of toast with butter. (It's one of his few indulgences)
Feed the dog and clean out her water bowl.
....
Go back to filing
....
Wake up dear daughter
...
Go back to filing.
Shake her out of bed.
...
Go back to filing.
....
Round up dearest daughter and help her clear the house of accumulated recyclables. (She's a big bug on recycling so it's her job, but she hasn't been feeling well lately.)
...
By now, I'm on a cleanup streak, so it's back to filing and recycling. MORE papers for the recycling!
Wash dishes and clear off the countertop to prep for cooking.
While that ....
Chat with dear day who's kind of obssessing about her medical problems, asking the same questions over and over again and not "getting' that WE DON'T KNOW.
Stop to fix dinner: burgers, cauliflower, green beans with a little cheese powder, and sweet potato.

Aaaaaannnd.... that's it for the day!
That's all I can manage from about 1000 to 1900.
