But I'm looking at the photos I took yesterday and I'm thinking that I probably won't get that wood putty to fill in the gaps between the steps and the wall. It's really not that noticeable when you're face isn't right down in it.

There would only be two real solutions to this, and neither would be ideal. The wood putty would look perfect when it was done, but if there was any more settling to the house in even the slightest, there's no give to that solution and things would potentially break. The other solution would be backer rod and caulk, which would be much more forgiving with slight shifting, but caulk in an application like that is guaranteed to be uneven, and it could very well lead to a much worse looking finish paint when trying to cut the brown of the steps into the white trim on the wall than just leaving the gaps there would.

I'm just going to start painting the white risers and the overlook today and not think about it. I'll still have time to decide if I want to do anything about it, but in the meantime I'll get some second opinions.

Maybe I'll find the time to get some pics up here and ask you what you think about the gaps.

--------------------------------------------------

Political correctness is just tyranny, with a smiley face.

How about ignoring it? If the steps are going to be dark brown, a slight (black/dark) gap would blend in with the dark brown paint, and if you put a real even line of wall color at the join it'll probably look better (cleaner, neater, straighter) than your other two options, where you might be traing to paint a straight line over an uneven surface?
Just a thought.

Yeah... It's not really a dark brown though.

I went and found it so I could show you the color. It's called Talavera from Pittsburgh Paint.

https://www.ppgpaints.com/color/color-families/neutrals/talavera

Quote:

Talavera is a saturated, gray, rusty beige with a chocolate undertone. It is a perfect paint color for spaces where warmth is required. Pair it with light woods and accents of blue or teal.

I think it would actually make pretty nice colors on walls too. If I choose to repaint either bedroom upstairs I may think about using that color again.

Just an FYI if you didn't know... though it will be pretty close, you're likely not seeing the accurate color on your screen unless you've got a very expensive monitor.

I actually broke down and decided to caulk it. I haven't actually caulked it yet, but after two LONG sessions, I finally finished applying the backer rod everywhere it needed to go first. After I wrote the last message about it, I went downstairs and right away the fact that some of the risers and steps had gaps between them were staring me in the face and I knew I had to at least do something about that. Then I just kind of decided to put the backer rod everywhere.

It really just has to be done. Those gaps are just so uneven from stair to stair and from riser to riser. Probably nobody else would notice but I'd be pissed off at myself every time I went back up those stairs and had to look at it.

I'll make this work.

I usually don't like using painter's tape for anything, but it may come into play here where the steps will meet the wall after caulking... at least on the top of the steps. The good thing is that the decorative trim on the wall where the caulk is going to make everything meet is being painted the same high-gloss white that the risers are, and I'm not super concerned about the lips of the bottom of the stairs being perfect cuts with the risers because unless you're a toddler you'd never be at a vantage point that you'd even see the transition.

I'm taking a little break now. I don't know if I'll finish caulking tonight, but it would be nice if I did. I could throw some primer on the caulk tomorrow then and start painting the risers and the trim almost right away. I think I'm also going to try painting the overlook while the paint is out, but since that's really intricate work I don't know what my chances are of getting all that done and putting the 2nd coat of paint on the risers and the trim.

Picture time.

Unfortunately, I didn't take a full picture of the staircase from the bottom before I did anything with it. I took these at some point just to show how bad the holes they cut for the return vent looked.

This picture still tells a thousand words though. You can see the grime on the steps, the brad nail holes on the risers, the screws down through the tops of the plates, the paint on the steps and risers when they did the trim because they didn't care at all with carpet going over them, the gaps between risers and steps, the uneven gaps between the wall and the staircase... probably some other things I'm forgetting right now.

Here's a pic after I'd already sanded everything down and applied the wood putty. This was the day that caused my body to feel wrecked when I woke up the next morning.

Got the wood putty all sanded down and finally cleaned my house up after that power sander kicked up dust everywhere. There was no way I could do it when I did the initial sanding to clean the steps up, but when I sanded the wood putty off I did it one handed while using my shop vac to catch all the dust. Hardly made a mess the 2nd time.

The good news is that after this room is finished, if I ever get around to doing the rest of the basement I can easily use some painters tape on the ceiling and separate the rest of the basement from the house and not deal with that issue again.

Rewind us back to a few months ago and I took this pic to show just how bad the stairs were from the side. The added benefit of the pic is you can see the old colors before the work I recently did down there.

You can see the huge gaps under the risers and behind the steps as well as the gaps between the risers and the white trim over the stringer. That trim was in awful shape too, especially at the bottom where everything was discolored from previous water damage, I'm sure.

A closeup of the holes and gaps from the side from just a few hours ago.

Got them all filled in with wood putty now. I decided not to caulk anything tonight and focus just on the spots that still needed wood putty. I have just a tiny little bit left in case I need to still fill in anything a 2nd time.

Here's a cloesup of the gaps to the wall. I already have all the backer rod in there. That took hours upon hours of work.

You can see from this angle just how mangled the bottoms of those vent holes still are, but I couldn't cut any further down. I may or may not choose to get more wood putty to try and fill them in. I'm going to paint it the dark grey color on the walls first and put the vents up and see if anybody would ever notice if I didn't. The way those vents are made, nobody is going to see any of the white of the risers because they have a thick metal border all around with a wire lattice work in between it. I think it will be okay as it is.

Here's a pic of the backer rod.

Technically, it's not backer rod. I stopped buying that stuff when I saw somebody on youtube make his own out of water pipe insulation. What a brilliant idea. I'd probably wasted $50 over the years on backer rod when you can get 4 bags worth of the stuff from one single length of the pipe insulation.

Had to jam that all in there with a small screwdriver nice and tight. Its purpose is to minimize and hopefully eliminate any cracking of the caulk when it dries by making the amount of it you need to apply a lot less on the gaps. Everywhere else I've ever used it, including my shower that had cracked caulk all over because they didn't use backer rod it's worked a charm.

I forgot to take a picture straight from the bottom of the steps after priming it, but you get a good idea here.

That color on the walls is so much better, isn't it?

We're getting there...

Wow, they treat you good in this hospital! Here I am in a private room in a comfortable bed with my head elevated. In not much pain, attentive aides and nurses, an extensive menu, and a friend on a pullout chair making sure I'm breathing ok.

I was bleeding pretty heavily from my nose and have double packing stuffed up each nostril and a thick eas of gauze taped under my nose, and I'm MORE comfortable than before!
Surgeon said the surgery was difficult "but we knew that going in" but that it went well. She comprehensively cleaned out scar tissue, granulomas, polyps, and infection from ... everywhere ... opened up the sinuses (again) and took biopsies and culture swabs.

Since I don't heal normally, apparently, the first thing is to prevent bleeding over the next two weeks by not spiking blood pressure (eg lifting more than 10 lbs, coughing, laughing, straining). The next thing is to follow up with an allergist/ immunologist or rheumatologist (or both). But right now I'm on antibiotics, steroids, NO painkillers, and I'm pretty happy.

Thanks!

It's really 90% prep work that nobody likes doing.

My poor buddy called me up last night and has to go back to his rental that he still hasn't sold over the winter and do a lot of outside touchups after the winter weather. I realize that it's not feesable for him to have spent 5 to 10 times as long as he already did working on that place, but when you don't do any prep work and just throw lipstick on a pig it's not going to look that way for very long. The house looked gorgeous in the sale pics when it was finished, but the way he's explaining the work that needs to be done again right now makes it sound like only one winter season that hasn't been especially horrible has just mangled the outside work.

The worst part is that he's got to resurface that huge driveway a 3rd time in 2 years. You've got to power wash it first. You've got to scrub out any oil first. I told him that when my neighbor saw my driveway when I was done she said "that's gorgeous! You should go into business doing that". I told her "Honestly, nobody could afford me and it would be cheaper to have a company come and put a new one down." Between cleaning out the cracks and filling them and all the prep work, that job cost me $600 in materials and 3 weeks of my time. Applying the surface topper was quick. Maybe 1.5 hours per coat over 2 days. But it's been nearly 4 years since I did that and it looks almost as good as it did when I finished it. If there wasn't so many alligator cracks in 2 spots that kind of reject the work over time, it would look just as good as the day I did it. My buddy didn't even get one winter out of his job.

No such thing as a bad suggestion.

I've already got something like that. It's possible the very first thing I did on this house was take them down so I could rip the carpet off those stairs. I know I've mentioned them before, but without pictures you probably couldn't visualize them. It's supposed to be really warm here on Monday and Tuesday, so my plan is to clean them up good with wire brushes on my drill and spraypaint them with the Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze I've used on all the hardware in the house.

Here's a mockup of what they look like that I just threw together in Paint.

Those cross sections are kind of wrapped around each other, similar to a metal outdoor fence, but in a bit more of a decorative way. I'm sure they got them from the same place they got all that wrought iron crap. I know I said I hate wrought iron in a house, but these will look fine where they're going.

I'm going to paint everything the dark grey color that is behind them, so hopefully nobody will even see any of that shoddy work when they go back up.

LOL... Yeah. That's the story of this whole house. I'm sure from one degree to another it's the story of most people's houses if they ever chose to get as intimate with them as I have with mine.

Well I've sanded down all that wood putty on the sides. It all had to be done by hand and I had to be particularly careful about sanding the large gaps because I jammed a ton of backer rod in there and the wood putty doesn't go very deep into it. Just in case it was still somewhat wet underneath I didn't want to accidentally break anything up, so I pretty much used a sanding sponge to do the job. I wouldn't have been able to sand with a sponge 3 days from now when it was all set hard.

I still have some wood putty to sand on the front of the bottom step and where one of the vent risers (doesn't) meet up with the step below it.

I think my plan is to finish that up, clean everything up good and then caulk what needs to be caulked. After that, I'm going to get out a pack of bleach wipes and wipe down everything I can reach inside those vent holes, let that dry and then hit it all inside with primer (and I'll hit all the sanded wood putty with primer while I'm at it). That should dry quick, then I can use up the rest of the can of the dark grey paint I used in the basement inside of the vent holes and that should really mask pretty much everything that is back there.

The only other thing I'd need to do to truly make sure it was dark in there is to go in the crawl and tape some cardboard to cover up the end of the venting (since it doesn't actually go anywhere without a furnace in the basement). Plenty of light actually gets in that vent and bounces around because I've got a light on 24/7 down there for the camera I have on the sump well. No reason to have that light shining in the vent now. Obviously, if I ever do put a furnace back down there it will be a closed vent system that didn't let any light in.

It got cold here and fast. I had to run a couple of errands and was able to go out just fine with just my hoodie. I was only out about 30 minutes and it was frigid by the time I got back home. Already feels 10 degrees colder in my basement than it was this morning.

We'll have to see about working down there tomorrow. Because I'm working on steps that already have primer down and will eventually be painted, it's just sweatpants and socks for me down there. I got my shoes down there for when I'm on the floor, but if I work down there tomorrow I'll probably have to be taking breaks just to warm up.

I can't believe it's going to be 67 on Tuesday.

It's before 9PM and I'm calling it a night. I almost feel lazy.

Everything is caulked. the wood putty was all sanded down and primed again. I cleaned up inside the vent for the return duct and primed it. Really slopped it on in there with a garbage paint brush and the last of a gallon of primer, which was nice since I didn't care if it got dirty. Didn't even bother cleaning that brush up. It's going in the trash.

Should be able to get both coats of the dark paint on the inside of the vents tomorrow. I went out and bought a can of the oil rubbed bronze spray paint for the grates since it's going to be so nice outside next week and I can get those taken care of... maybe in between painting coats on the steps.

Still haven't gotten to the overlook final paint yet. I should be ready to start that soon along with the stair trim and risers.

I hit all the caulked stuff with primer now that it's had a chance to dry. There were a few hairline gaps in the steps because they're made of poplar that was glued together that I hit with the primer as I went down the stairs too.

Just waiting now on that to dry so I can paint inside the vent holes with the dark grey. I'm also going to hit the pieces in the center that are in front of the center stringer with the grey, and maybe an inch or so around the holes in the front. I don't want any white showing up behind the grates when they're installed so everything has the best chance of blending in with each other.

Now that the caulk is primed, I may hit the tops of the steps one more time with a light bead of caulk to try to make it as smooth as possible. Not going to worry about the risers though since they're going to be white and blend right in with the trim.

Back to reality! But this tells me I need a vacation. This summer, gonna take a week off and go someplace where there's no cooking, cleaning, dishes, yardwork, or having to mind everyone's schedule or doctor's appointments or medical conditions.

Anyway, on light duty for at least two weeks, so no heavy lifting or straining or extended bending down so that eliminates most yardwork. Probably focus on decluttering and organizing and hope it sticks this time since I live with one pack rat and one near-hoarder.

Hey, glad that you're "information gathering", BRENDA! Its always good to be prepared for the future!

Over here, the big thing is arranging for medical coverage, plus in our case making financial and legal arrangements for dear daughter. If someone here is covered thru workplace it's simple, but once they retire, and especially if they retire early, as I did, it can be a bit of a scramble to arrange for extended coverage until Medicare kicks in. And even then people still need to get covered for all three parts: hospital, medical, and Rx. And get EXTRA coverage bc Medicare doesn't cover all of the costs. And arrange separately for dental and vision. Fortunately hubby's workplace offers a wraparound plan that covers those non-Medicare expenses.

Since dear daughter is underage but has been disabled since birth, she also qualifies for Medicare (Oh, it was a giant relief to find that out!) but, again, all those other coverages. I needed to do a lot of shopping for the best, most cost-effective plans for her. Anyway, our system is so complex I can see why they say administrative costs take up 30% of our healthcare costs. Such a big headache!

You don't have to deal with that stuff, do you?

I'll have some more pictures up soon Sigs. The stairs have turned into another week long to 10 day project, but that's par for the course, really.

Got a coat of the dark grey paint down in the vent holes and around the outside of them now. I decided to tape them off so I didn't get it where the white is going to go, but in retrospect I didn't really need to do that until I was putting white down... so other than having cleaner pictures of it on top of the primer, it was pretty much a waste of expensive painter's tape. Oh well...

While that's drying I am going to put more caulk down on the steps over the primer. Doesn't need much, but I'd like that to be as flat as possible on top of the steps and between the curve of my digits and the sink of the caulk, I've got the likely unavoidable divots that I wouldn't have had if wood putty use there was a real option. Just looking to minimize that as much as possible now.

Nice progress there, SIX. Crazy weather tho. Sounds like Buffalo: "If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes".

Glad you are feeling better SIG and you do deserve a vacation for sure this year.

I need to gather all the info I can on different government things as I am doing this on my own. Which is something that I always have to remind people of.

Turning 60 can be a big year for different government things in Canada. And the Feds start sending out letters before you do. I got one from Canada Pension Plan last year before my 59th. That was what I was looking in to yesterday. I want to get that sorted out as they recommend doing it early and I don't want to forget about it.

Feds here are rolling out a dental plan to cover Canadians but right now I don't qualify. Always with the hoops.

But anything else I don't have to worry about as it is covered. Thank goodness as my seizure meds even after all these years are still over $100 a month.

I was on the fence if I was going to paint the first coat of white on the risers and the trim... but I took a break and I think I will. Not going to mess with the overlook though. I need an early night for once. Maybe tomorrow I'll do the final coat on all of it. I really should get that overlook done before I paint the stairs since I'll be going up and down them quite a bit when I'm painting that thing after it was installed.

Got that done except for the outer trim on the outside of the steps.

I had to do a repair on the very top of the trim that I forgot about doing until earlier today, and it required quite a bit of spackel in a hole. We're talking WAY up high, just below the bottom step to the 2nd floor. I want that done before I paint steps, so hopefully it dries tomorrow. That was going to preclude me from doing a 2nd coat tonight, but even though I painted around that and finally got around to painting the trim on the outside of the finished steps going up to the 2nd floor after 12 or so years otherwise, I don't need to paint any of that a 2nd time tonight and I can just go back and paint the risers and the bottom trim a 2nd time.

I'll probably do that since I already have the paint out and it only took me about 1.5 hours. Without cutting around those finished stairs, the 2nd coat probably only takes 1 hour.

It's looking great, but I'm getting real impatient about getting those steps done. That's going to be the real transformative part.

I'm going to focus I think on the overlook tomorrow, and possibly put a 3rd coat on the risers and trim if I feel it needs it in the sunlight. Hopefully that repair I did is ready to sand down and get painted tomorrow morning too, because I'm not touching the stairs until I take care of that first.

I'm going to do one more coat on the white.

Not today though. I think I'm just going to focus on finishing that overlook and making that repair on the trim up by the second floor. I think I want to give all of this caulk and paint a few days to dry proper before I put a final coat on. I can already see a few hairline cracks in the caulk lines, which is annoying since they've got 3 coats on top of them already including the primer. I don't want to add the 2nd color until that stops happening.

No biggie. The only thing I'm really concerned about getting finished the following two days is cleaning up those old grates and getting the oil rubbed bronze spray paint on them while the weather is nice. If they've got to sit for another week or more after they're done, so be it. I can find other things to keep me busy in the meantime. My house really needs a good cleaning, and I'm a little behind on paperwork.

I should probably empty out my shop vac and clean the filter real good and get that basement as clean as I can make it. No matter how much I sweep I seem to pick up stuff with my socks and get it on the steps, so I'm constantly wiping them down with a microfiber cloth before doing any work on them.

I'm glad I spotted that little missing piece of trim under the top step to the 2nd floor yesterday. Between cutting back some garbage, plastering it and the "hidden" spot on the adjacent wall and generally cleaning up a really bad previous job, that's a TON of garbage I would have been working on above the painted steps if I waited on doing it later.

It's been on my mind for a long time to do it, and fortunately before I worked on the basement it was on my mind again so I actually had before pictures.

I wasn't even thinking about the gap all those years though until I spotted it yesterday. I just wanted to clean up the edges and smooth it out for repainting.

Circled here you can see the gap that I was somehow oblivious to for over 12 years until yesterday when I was painting that trim going upstairs and cutting it into the steps properly. I guess it's easy to miss things like that when everything else around it looks like crap.

A picture isn't as good as the real thing was in 3D, but I think you can get a good idea of the shitshow I was working with. At some point, before or after steps were put down going upstairs, somebody mudded around this corner and then just said screw it and let it look like crap after that. I understand why. It took me an hour and a half of cutting crap out and using small sheets of sandpaper to try to sand everything down in there despite my big meaty paws getting in the way.

It ain't perfect, but it doesn't need to be. Once it's painted it will blend in very nicely. I needed all that excess crap out of there because I'm going to be using L-Shaped trim to frame out the rest of the stairwell both upstairs and downstairs, and it's going to be going right down into that, and you won't ever see that bad corner again. Before I removed all that crap I would never have gotten that piece of trim to fit in there right and something that probably only I noticed all these years would be noticeable to everyone.

And here's a different vantage point where you could see the gap and how it went all the way up to the bottom of the top step. Don't mind the hair.

Much better.

I think I'll tape off the back corner of that top stair and both angles of the wall so I can hit all that with primer now and when it dries I can put a little bit of the high-gloss on the trim side and a little bit of white ceiling paint on the other two sides. Unfortunately, I don't have the same color paint that was painted in the upper stairwell to just match that all the way down, but really... nobody is going to notice it. You can hardly see down in there from the top of the steps and once the banister is in place you'll never notice it. And once that L-Shaped trim is in there it will be even less noticeable than it already was from the bottom steps.

I'm thinking I might paint the top step today too. There's no cracking caulk to worry about on that one, and I really want to see what this is going to look like when it's all done. The suspense is killing me.

No way I'm painting that overlook today. That's such a big and intricate job and my heart just isn't in it right now.

Yeah. Sanded all the muck and junk off first, then hit everything with the wood putty and sanded that down a 2nd time. I also "broke" the hard ends (which means rounding them down... for looks as well as paint adhesion). It's just about as perfect a surface as I could make it given what I started with.

I always thought I might stain it anyways, but there was just too much damage to it. I think it really would have looked bad. There were some holes in the stairs going up as well. Some I don't know how they got there and staple holes from the carpeting that went up to the 2nd floor too, but comparatively it was so minimal that those steps really looked nice after staining them and you don't notice the defects.

I just wrapped up for the day. First day in I don't know how long that I didn't work until after 9PM, but still way longer than I thought I was going to. But the last thing I did was paint that top stair tread with the new color. I haven't taken a picture yet because I want it to dry to the real color first. I think it's going to look really good.

I'm glad I did it today. It's going to let me know how bad (or not bad) walking on the paint is going to be with my socks as I work (and in between stair work). I also quickly figured out that I'm not going to paint the bottoms of the treads brown too. Way too huge a pain cutting that in, and even a short guy like me can't see the bottom of any of them while standing up anyhow. It just means that when I paint the white again I've got to hit the bottoms of all of those treads that only have primer on them now.

Thanks Sigs.

Well... Everything except for the rest of that basement, anyhow. Flooding is still a concern in a bad season, so I really need to get around to doing all that mitigation work this spring and summer. It would be a heartbreak if we had the big one this spring and I have to gut all that drywall again.

I'm in no rush on any of that otherwise. I just wanted that one room basically finished, minus the baseboard, so it didn't look like dogshit from the upstairs. At least 50% of why that overlook looks so good is because what's on the other side of it looks good. Which finally includes the stairs too.

I'll get a picture or three up of the finished work on that problem spot from earlier today as well as the top step being painted after it's dry soon.

As promised... Some pics up to date where we are now...

A few before/after snaps of the 2 coats of white ceiling paint put on the patched up area I worked on yesterday. What a big time sink that was... But I'm glad I remembered to get to it now instead of working on that after the stairs were painted.

Here's a pic from a bit more of a distance (Still far closer than anybody's face is ever going to be to it). I'd thought about using the color I'm going to use on the stairs there, but that isn't a good match either, and I figured with all the white trim the fact that I don't have that paint color for the upstairs hallway is masked better just going white here. Once a Bannister is installed I don't think anybody would ever notice it anyhow.

That overhead part that goes down into this patched up area with the outer angle is one of the spots that will be getting the L-Shaped corner guard trim installed, so it's going to look a lot cleaner than it does now. It will be a little tricky getting that area trimmed out in that little nook and the corner that meets with the basement ceiling that are not 90 degree angles, but nothing I can't handle.

Gap be gone.

Haven't painted the high-gloss white on it yet, but it was primed along with the rest of the patch. It will get painted when I get the next coat on everything else.

And there's the stair color... FINALLY.

I wish I could have done more of them when I did this, but that was the only step where there wasn't hairline splits in the very minimal amount of caulk put down on that little nub touching the wall on the one end.

I knew this color didn't match with the existing 2 colors on the 1st floor hardwood and the upper stairs and 2nd floor hardwood, but I think it blends with them just fine as well as blending with all of the other aspects of the rooms like the wall colors and the tile floor.

You haven't seen the dark brown carpet pads I bought yet, and I also took that color into account when choosing this color. Those pads are really big... something like 8" x 35", so most of the steps are going to be covered by them anyhow. I bought enough to put one on the tile floor and wrap all the way up to the 2nd floor (18 in all). Having those on all the steps should tie everything together even nicer.

I'm amazed at the coverage I got with only one coat. You almost don't even need a 2nd coat on the step as far as coverage goes, but since it is a high traffic area I will be putting down 3 coats total. I opted for a semi-gloss sheen here. It's still very washable once it cures, but it won't be as slippery as high-gloss would have been. It will be a while before I put down the carpet pads and without a banister I don't need to beg for trouble. Plus, the high-gloss paint is really thick paint and needs to be applied much quicker than the other sheens before it starts "gunking up" on you (at least with this brand, anyway). Cutting in these steps is going to be tricky, and I don't need that additional pressure of being on a very short clock while trying to blend the paint smooth after cutting.

It looks like I can already walk on it just fine with my socks, although I just kind of tested it and haven't really walked on it much at all. It's going to be kind of a pain for me to remember not to walk down there with my shoes on for about a month to 45 days while it cures up and before I can put the carpet pads on, but warm weather is coming so it should be fine.

Well... It's going to be 60+ degrees out the next 2 days. The main focus is cleaning up those grates with wire brushes and sandpaper and then getting them spray painted. Hopefully I can just get that done today though, because even though it's almost 70 degrees tomorrow, that's coming with a half inch of rain starting in the afternoon, with possible thunderstorms along with it.

Hopefully I don't have to drag my extension cord out of the window of the finished room for the generator tonight. I really need to get that generator situation fixed sooner than later so I can just plug it in from the outside.

Finished for the day. Spent about 4 hours cleaning off those grates with my various wire wheels for my drill and a wire brush. Sprayed them down good with rust proof primer and then hit them with my oil rubbed bronze spray paint. I'll look at them tomorrow again when they're dry and see if it needs any touch ups, but I think I got them finished. If I need to do any spraying outside tomorrow I'd better do it early with the rain coming by early afternoon.

In the meantime, I pulled down all that basement trim. Looks like I saved all the actual baseboard. I didn't realize I still had all of that. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I marked which pieces go where on the shelf level, but I did with the actual baseboard. That sucks.

No way I'm even going to try bringing any of that into the house until it's cleaned and sanded down. Don't know when I'll get to any of that, but at least it's where I can easily get to it now.

Probably going to my friends house for dinner and to shoot some pool. Gotta get cleaned up and maybe hit the grocery store first if I have time.

Overall, even accounting for steroid high, better than before surgery, which kind of gives me an idea of how miserable I was. Surgeon roto-rooted all of my sinuses and trimmed a lot of overgrown bony structures from my nose (they had almost fused one nostril shut and severely restricted the other) and made a hole in my septum to make more breathing room. She sent it all to pathology (maybe get a dx of sarcoidosis or something treatable), and microbiology (infectious organisms). Rinsing clots out of my nose, still stuffed up bc tissues still swollen, and seeping a little blood but still... BETTER THAN BEFORE!
Happy so far about the results.

My boss is the same way. She looooves onions. I am like your daughter. They don't like me and I don't like them.

Eating them has the potential to make me feel very sick for a good long while and that is just a horrible feeling.

My supper tonight was a little hamburger with some pasta and then I melted some cheese through it.

Do you want to read something gross and disgusting?

Like I posted, surgeon trimmed a lot of bony structures from my nose, reamed open 6 sinus passages .... actually drilled two new ones to my frontal sinuses.

(Originally she was going to drill a passage between the two, but she said it would have taken another hour of drilling bc there was so much bone...
Say, did she just call me a bonehead?)

Anyway, scraped out a lot of inflamed tissue and scars from sinuses and nasal passages. Naturally there was a lot of swelling and bleeding, especially into my sinuses.

So I've been encouraged to rinse, rinse, rinse. The right nostril started rinsing OK but the left one ... persistent pressure next to my nose. I was begining to think there was a clot stuck in there that wasn't coming loose. But finally, FINALLY, the clot lysed and this nasty brown gob slithered out of my nose and ....yay! Feels better!

It was such a horror to look at, but so good to be gone!
Still have healing to do, need to up my protein to make up for all that seepage, but every day I feel better than the day before, and better than before surgery. I'm even beginning to breathe thru my left nostril again! I think I can sleep thru a night without struggling to breathe.

I finally took a day off of working on stuff here yesterday. Partly because it was time and partly because last night was a big what if scenario. Reports through the night before said about .6 inches of rain in just a few hours with massive winds and thunderstorms and the possibility of tornadoes.

But yesterday morning they seemed to back off of that quite a bit. No more talk of tornadoes, the rain was only going to be around .25 inches and we might not even get thunderstorms. Still... I had to be ready if the power went out.

Things looked good until about 9:00PM. Then the sky lit up non-stop for about a half hour with constant thunder. Air raid sirens went off once, but didn't repeat. When I heard that I saw there was now a tornado warning until around 10PM. Everything calmed down by around 9:30PM and that was that.

I think the strangest thing is I woke up this morning and everything looks dry outside. All that thunder and lightning activity and if we got any rain you can't even tell now. I don't think we got any. The sun's not out now and it dropped 50 degrees since yesterday, so it's not like it would be drying up.

Power stayed on and everything looks good.

I think today I want to put the final paint on that overlook and hit the hairline cracks in the caulk on the steps. We'll see how the day goes.

I applied a coat of paint on the hairline cracks in the caulk with a finish brush. So far, so good, but I won't really know for a few hours. Right now I'm painting that overlook and that's going to be an extremely time consuming process. I imagine it's going to take two coats to finish too, so I'll probably be at it again tomorrow. Since there's caulk in those holes for the poles, I probably don't want to rush a 2nd coat and I'll see what it looks like tomorrow and if I need to hit hairline cracks there before doing the final coat.

Oh yeah, and I hit the bottoms of the stairs with the white paint as I went along too since I'm not painting the bottoms of the steps brown. That will need another coat, but I am going to be putting one more coat of white on the trim and the risers once the cracks in the caulk are gone, so I'll hit it then.
