No, not recently. But in the process of chopping down weeds some sprinkler heads got chopped too. And three, I know, have been broken for over a year.

I have a gizmo for unscrewing broken "risers". It can be a PITA to use, but it works.

More importantly, I want to replace those (9) 70- year old valves and ridiculous controller, two valves that leak and two stuck shut, with ball valves, and reconfigure the PVC connections to make more sense. That would require cuttingthe valves off copper lines on tbe upstream side and putting ball valves in with ... well, I would like a soldered joint but be happy with a compression fittings ( what we in the lab would call swagelok or parker hannifen fittings) and PVC on the downstream side. SharkBite works well for PVC.
But first, I need to assess the backyard valves. So tomorrow I'm goin to grab my trusty pocket reciporocating saw and cut down those effing palm sprouts that have grown up in the irrigation supply area. And elsewhere. Those Mexican fan plams! I had those effing trees taken out, but their seeds are still everywhere.

Thanks to 4 years illness i have a lot to catch up on!

Poker, blackjack, and chess are a few more. It sounds like these groups are pretty well established and don't have room for beginners? That's too bad! The best time I ever had playing was as a newbie with a really fun group.

I like to play some online games (247games) and I'm expanding my repertoire to blackjack and poker. Doing pretty well at poker, really. Still learning the odds of blackjack. I might try hearts next. Since it's all no- cost I can flub around as much as I want while I learn the rules of the games. But there's no online cribbage, alas.

Maybe you could learn some games online?

I learned to play cribbage with my dad when I was child but haven't played in years.

Played mah jong on line for years before learning to play with the actual tiles at the seniors centre. The lady who runs the mah jong group teaches anyone who wants to play but as I said you have to commit to joining the main group which plays Thursday morning.

I've played poker and again years ago with a couple of friends but don't really remember how. Learned solitaire from my mom and I play it on line too. She also taught me how to play Chinese checkers and I've played regular checkers too.

Played on line slots for free too.

Nice thing about the game it accommodates from 2 to 6 players. We girls had TONS of fun with that!!

What would it take to start a new group, BRENDA? I mean, if there was a particular game that you wanted to play that wasn't being played at the Senior Center?

Just to let y'all know, I'll be cutting back on posting again. Lots to do! But I'll still be keeping up with what you're doing/ what's happening, and chipping in from time to time.

I expect progress reports from you, SIX!

As you used to say: "Do right, be right".

Yeah a friend of mine used to play a bit in high school. I still have my mom's version of the game. It's made out of metal and the marbles inside rattle when you move it.

I would have to talk to the head office and probably put around a notice of a new game to see if anyone is interested. Then find a time for it and a room for it as well as anyone interested I would probably have to teach. Then there would be getting copies of the game depending on what it was.

I'm mistaking you for somebody else then. I know my brother on the East Coast had recently done this, but I know somebody else that I know had done it too. For some reason I thought it was you.

That's a pretty big job there, but it will be well worth it once you're done. Good luck with it.

A "pocket reciprocating saw"? I'm not familiar with that.

I've got a corded DeWalt and a cordless Ryobi, but they're both beasts. I don't have any problems holding it with one hand and holding the thing being cut with the other, but I can't imagine that would be safe for you to attempt.

I just looked them up. They're pretty cool. Cute little things. But I'm seeing all the big players make them so they've got to be packing some power.

Please be careful.

LOL... I haven't done that since I was a kid and I was messing around with the menus and changed the launguage from English to something else.

My TVs are all "dumb" except for a small one my aunt gave me last year. I set up both of hers and it was a bit of a chore getting everything running the way she wanted it and removing all the bloat and crap she was never going to use.

I don't know how the hell they think your average person who doesn't keep up with tech could set those up where they're actually useful. They probably don't care and don't even want that anyhow because they want you to have potential "landmines" all over the place, enticing you to spend more money on things you don't need after the purchase. I actually had to go into the deeper settings to find "privacy" and manually disagree to allowing them to sell her data since the default option is that she gives them express permission to sell any data they collect on her.

Ridiculous.

The only reason I even took the one she was getting rid of is because I can keep it offline and use an Amazon Fire Stick for the online connectivity.

Good luck!

Thanks SIX

I know. Ever since they turned tvs into HD it is a pain in the azz. I can watch what I want to watch, I just have to do it a different way. And I hate getting "tech support" is over the phone because with my hearing problem it makes it hard to understand them.

May have to make a trip to a store in another city to talk to an actual human being to try and set things back to right.

I'm glad you got it operational again Brenda.

I'm pretty sure that whatever you wanted to make it do you could bend that TV to your will, but I won't suggest that you even try to do it yourself because you might accidentally end up with a TV that doesn't serve you at all again.

I know you don't use credit cards, but if you could manage to get your hands on a current generation Amazon Fire TV stick there's not much you can't do with that and an antenna connected to it.

With the Fire TV you can download all sorts of free streaming programs as long as you don't mind commercial TV. A lot of them could probably be downloaded to your smart TV as well, although different manufacturers have different lists of apps that they make available to you unless you start hacking things.

What's great about the Fire Stick is that it is easily hackable, and even if you screwed something up while trying to do that it's also very easy to factory reset it so you can try it again. You don't get that guaranty with a TV and could accidentally brick it by messing around like that.

Back when I watched TV and movies on the regular, I had installed a program called KODI on my Fire Stick and could watch pretty much anything that had ever been made. The only problem was that every few months or so they'd get shut down and you'd have to redo it again with the new software that thwarted their attempts to shut them down. You could put KODI on a good deal of smart TVs too, but they recommended against it since you'd be putting a several hundred dollar TV at risk instead of a $40 device that could easily be factory reset if something went sideways.

But come to think of it now... I don't even know if KODI is a thing that exists anymore. It's been a LONG time now.

I hate that Roku TV my aunt gave me. It takes about 10 to 15 seconds to load up when you turn it on, and the user interface is ass. Even when you're not online with it and it can't show you constant advertisements, the boxes are there where the ads would be and only about half of the main screen is functional for the user. And when you're not online it won't even let you make any changes to what you see on your "home" page. And I refuse to put it online now since I'm probably one of the only Roku TV owners that never agreed to their new terms of service since it hasn't been online since last fall when I took it out of my back porch and packed it away for the winter. The second that thing goes online it will update and I won't even be able to use the TV for anything unless I agree to their new bullshit TOS.

I've looked... It's not hackable since it's a closed source OS.

I much prefer the ancient Zenith flat screen I just got from my friend a few months ago. It's twice as thick and not nearly as sleek looking, but it's just a regular old dumb TV that turns on immediately and loads my fire stick right after it turns on.

I've never actually purchased a flat screen TV on my own. They've all been hand me downs. But if I ever do buy one, I'm thinking that I might just buy a huge computer monitor instead. I can always buy an antenna if I ever go insane and decide to watch commercial TV again, and that way I could plug whatever I wanted into it and not have their stupid "smart" things going on in the foreground and the background. I will never buy a TV that can connect directly to the internet.

Thing is was I pushed a wrong button and somehow it dropped a channel that I watch the local news on.

Well, you forget that I live in an apartment building on the tenth floor and any work done up this high would not be really possible.

My tv is old and will just have to do until it dies and I get one of the newer flat screen ones. And that will be a smaller one as the space for a tv I got is small.

Mostly I use a tv to watch the news, my cooking shows, maybe Dr. Who if I can get it and of course Nathan Fillion's show "The Rookie". Then I use it to watch DVDs, like movies and stuff I can't find on YouTube.

I didn't get as much done outside as I had planned, bc just about the time I was heading out I remembered that I needed to call our health care provider's tech support and have them send the links for three telemed appts to my smart phone, which has audio and video, instead of to our PC email, which doesn't. And apparently tech support takes off early on Friday bc I spent about 20 minutes trying to reach them before giving up on that number and calling their after- hours number. Which I hate to do bc it seems so rude. But after hours tech support was very helpful so now I have the links where they need to be so we're all set for the coming week.

And even with that delay, I did manage to cut down the palm sprouts and a few volunteer shrub and tree sprouts in that irrigation valve area and pull up this crazy groundcover planted by the previous owner that grows EVERYWHERE if left untended. All needed to do now is rake up the area so the pathway footing is more obvious and secure.

Back to work!

How did THAT happen??

Number one rule to anything computer related: ALWAYS save backups!

If you have faith in your computer hardware, save it under a different filename! (And come up with a good file and file-naming system so you know what time was created when, and for who. (Example 24-05-04-synopsis-for-XYZpublisher-backup).

If not, save that file, same explicit filename, to a thumb drive, for example.

I had to come up with a file-naming system for an entire group of 14 people using 30 different instruments and a number of different methods so they would all wind up on the shared drive in findable locations. Instruments had different firmware filename limitations. THAT was a challenge !

Your own personal files should be relatively easy to document.

Don't you go feeling bad about that.

If I were writing out all my posts I make here by hand on paper and you saw how bad of a speller I was IRL you'd swear to god I was retarded. Sometimes when I see all those red squiggly lines, I do wonder.

Wow. You mean old, old... like a Tube TV?

Oh yeah... even if you have to buy one used, you've got to treat yourself to a flat screen if that's the case, even if it's the same size as your old one, the picture is just SO much better. You're going to see things you never would have noticed before.

She's watching things like cooking shows and cop shows all the time on demand... meaning she doesn't have to wait for a particular show she likes to come on and she can just cue it up whenever she wants to watch it. They still inject commercials into it, so I can't be bothered watching TV that way, but I'd assume just like my aunt that you're used to it and it wouldn't bother you none.

You get yourself a flat screen TV with an HDMI input or two and get one of those Fire Sticks, along with your internet it's going to open up a whole lot more viewing options you probably aren't even aware of.

Let me know if and when you decide to go for it and even though I don't use none of that stuff I can fire up my stick and see what your options are and try to walk you through setting any of it up.

Think I was clearing out some old material and just wasn't paying any attention to what I was doing.

I keep hard copies of pretty well everything I write to do with my book from the book itself to letters sent to publishers, to my bio to well the synopsis.

That's a good idea. I should have a think about that.

Not sure what part of my post you're referencing here. I think perhaps we may have gotten our wires crossed.

My tv is old and will just have to do until it dies and I get one of the newer flat screen ones. And that will be a smaller one as the space for a tv I got is small.

Wow. You mean old, old... like a Tube TV?

Oh yeah... even if you have to buy one used, you've got to treat yourself to a flat screen if that's the case, even if it's the same size as your old one, the picture is just SO much better. You're going to see things you never would have noticed before.

Thought about doing a rescan but that scares me and I start thinking that I might make a worse mess. Since I do use a "tv guide" which shows all the channels networks are on, I looked it up there and have just been talking to the remote saying the channel number I want.

Crossed wires are possible. Don't worry about it.

I would have to say my tv is around 20 years old at least maybe a little less. I remember when my mom bought it and it was a real first generation flat screen. It still has a big back on it. It's hard to describe.

Oh the commercials bother me but yeah, I can use commercial time to get up and get something to eat or washroom.

It may be a while. This turkey has held up under at least 8 moves including being in storage for a while.

My email.
Ugh.
I get so much spam it's hard to keep my inbox cleared. Right now its full of junk. It needs weed whacking as desperately as the yard.

Since we try to give dear daughter as much experience wuth different things as possible, after safety instructions (always have the blade moving away from you, here is the button that locks the trigger off, brace the shoe against what you're trying to cut) and one example, I gave dear daughter the pocket reciprocating saw. And with me hovering over her at first but then moving away, damn if she didn't cut down somewhere in the realm of 15 palm saplings. Did a great job, cutting down as close to the ground as possible. Some were 4" thick, so I had to switch her out from a short blade to a longer one, but I was impressed with her work!

Well, on with the show here, too!

Forgot to mention that I read this in my local tv mag. The actor who plays the Duke in "Miss Scarlett and the Duke" is leaving the show. Says 5 years is plenty and he is off to greener pastures. Too bad. He was one of the best things about the show as I don't like the female character of Miss Scarlett at all. Funny thing is that they are sending the Duke to America. As he is the same actor who was in "Jamestown" which happened in America.

Finally seemed to have gotten back in a good mindset and went to sleep at a decent hour last night.

Weather is miserable around here since last night with tons of rain, on and off thunderstorms and a tornado watch until late tonight.

Ended up dealing with some property tax stuff that is now (hopefully) finally finished after over 1 1/2 years of bullshit today. Haggled down a good deal on my cable internet for another year. Ran about 7 errands, and now I'm in before the heavy rain starts up again.

I've got some financials and paperwork to do now, and I'd probably do well to start doing a few chores around the house since it looks like a bomb hit the place right now. My aunt wants to stop by this weekend, and there's no way she's going to see it look like this.

Hopefully I can keep this up and start working on that generator plug / 2nd sump well solution now so I can then finally get around to working on that 265 bags worth of river rock I've accumulated. Once that work is done, I shouldn't ever have water in my basement again unless we get 12" at a time, and I'll never have to worry about edging grass along the back/side of my house or the garage either.

Dammit!

It would appear I didn't get my head on straight quick enough. I just missed my first election in I don't know how many years. Today was our Primary. I even drove right past my local polling place when I went to the post office when it would have still been open.

Oh well...

There weren't any provisional matters on the ballot at all this time, unlike the 2018 mid-terms when the local Democrats managed to screw everybody on their property taxes by putting the referendum for a major increase for the schools on an off-year mid-term ballot they knew nobody was going to show up for.

It was just the primary for President, Senate and House in our locality. Everybody knows exactly how all 3 of those are going to go long before the General election anyhow. Other than that it was some dumb bullshit like County Coroner.

Who gives a shit about that?

Still though... Feel bad that I missed it.

Boy... April really got away from me. I can't believe it's May 7th already.

Thanks Sigs.

I know all about it. Happens pretty often to me and for varying lengths of time. It's like a light switch gets shut off and I can't find it in the dark.

I'm thinking that the reason it lasted so long this time is because it's been a long time since the last time it happened. When you get hit with the news you got Diabetes and other health issues, you tend to wake up pretty quick and start doing things right.

I did have some down time in the last half of summer last year as well, but nothing like this one. I think part of my problem is the fact that I'm managing the Diabetes so well and at this point it's old hat.

I'm not going to say that my numbers were as good overall these last 5 or so weeks as they were before I fell into my funk, but even when I was in that rut they were still a lot better than my doctor or the diabetes community wants to see out of diabetics. The diet really isn't hard for me to abide even in down times, and the CGM is just amazing. I hardly really even think about it anymore, honestly. I don't even talk to anybody about it anymore. Give it a year or two and my friends and family will probably forget I even have Diabetes.

Not going to say that I'm out of the funk until I get back to working and I know I'm out of it. But today was really good and I've had a few pretty decent days here and there over the last week or so before it.

I got a lot of work that needs doing. Hopefully I can get back to that now.

Just OOC SIX have you noticed any seasonal pattern? One of my relatives is strongly affected by season. Come the shortening days of winter, they want to go to sleep. In spring, they're "wired but tired".

In reviewing old phone bills over a few years, my long distance calls (when there was such a thing) REALLY peaked in May. (Now, it's internet shopping!)

BRENDA seems to be affected by cold, dark weather.

So, something perhaps in the transition from summer to fall, or winter to spring? Or both?

Sometimes success builds on success. You get such a charge accomplishing something it leads you to do more. But sometimes it's just hard to get the motor going! You start, do, accomplish... motivation coughs, sputters ... and then dies.

Sigh!

Maybe, but not really though... I used to think it was SAD, but even though I've had some bad winters, I've also kept myself busy with that full kitchen remodel over a winter and you know I've been busy this winter. Around these parts that can sometimes be 2 straight months without even seeing the sun. But then last summer I got a lot less done than I should have and this last thing had a lot of crap days but I wasted some nice sunny days too.

The thing I can say for sure is that no matter what happens I'm regularly super busy between the end of August up through the beginning of November or so. That's a benefit to living where I do and knowing that no matter what you did all summer you've only got a little time left to get everything you want to do outside done.

I know that overall getting rid of all the darkened blinds and putting all that vinyl up was a major positive life change. There used to be zero light in the basement, and not all that much on the 1st floor before I did that. I think my only problem now is that I've spent half my working life working overnights and I don't have any problem sleeping even when the sun is glaring right down on me. But it's a lot nicer having the sun come in whenever it pops out while still maintaining privacy.

Yup. That explains it right there.

And that's exactly how my leaf blower is behaving right now too. Once I get my head fixed I'm going to have to extend the courtesy and get her head on straight too.
