He is being tricky in the minds of Trumptards and himself but in reality he is a stupid asshole who won't admit he lost in 2020 and won't limit himself to two terms in office.

Trump has repeatedly promised to sic the Justice Department on his political adversaries, vowing to appoint “a real special prosecutor to go after” President Joe Biden, “the entire Biden crime family, and all others involved with the destruction of our elections, borders and our country itself.” He has repeatedly praised the extrajudicial killing of looters and drug dealers, and implored police officers to brutalize criminal suspects.

Trump has repeatedly assured those who commit violence on his behalf — like the January 6 rioters who tried to forestall the peaceful transfer of power in 2021 — that he will immunize them from legal accountability through presidential pardons.

Trump adopted a gangster’s mentality toward crime: the criminality of any given action is determined by its compatibility with his interests, not the law.

Trump's Truth Social reported financial results today for the first quarter of the year. Total revenue clocked in at $770,000 (yes, thousand).

TMTG (the official name of Trump's company) also announced operating losses of $12.1 million, up from $9.2 million losses last quarter.

Naturally the company said it was focused on long-term development, not pesky quarterly results because—well, what choice do they have? Their quarterly results are terrible.

What Does the Dow Hitting 40,000 Tell Us? (That Trump is a Retard, as are his Trumptards)

By Paul Krugman | May 20, 2024

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/20/opinion/trump-biden-stock-market-do
w-jones.html

Last week, for the first time in history, the Dow Jones industrial average closed above 40,000.

Unlike many right-wing commentators, I don’t consider the stock market the best indicator of the economy’s health, or even a good indicator. But it is an indicator. And given the state of American politics, with hyperpartisanship and conspiracy theorizing running rampant, I’d argue that this market milestone deserves more attention than it has been getting.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but do you have any doubt that Republicans, across the board, would be trumpeting the Dow’s record high from every rooftop if Donald Trump were still in the White House?

The background here is the gap between what we know about the actual state of our economy and the way Trump and his allies describe it.

By the numbers, the economy looks very good. Unemployment has now been below 4 percent for 27 months, a record last achieved in the late 1960s, ending in February 1970. Inflation is way down from its peak in 2022, although by most measures it’s still somewhat above the Federal Reserve’s target of 2 percent. U.S. economic growth over the past four years has been much faster than in comparable major wealthy nations.

Yet Trump says that the economy is “collapsing into a cesspool of ruin.” How can such claims be reconciled with the good economic data?

Well, the numbers I just cited come from official agencies — the Bureau of Labor Statistics (which produces labor market data) and the Bureau of Economic Analysis (which estimates gross domestic product). And if you were a hard-core MAGA partisan inclined to conspiracy theories — but I repeat myself — you might tell yourself that the good economic numbers are fake, concocted by a corrupt deep state to help President Biden win the election.

Although I don’t have a way to quantify this, my sense is that conspiracy theories about the economic data have been proliferating as the news gets better. For example, have you heard the one about how the B.L.S. is hiding inflation by removing coffee from the Consumer Price Index? (It isn’t.)

But how do we know that the B.L.S. isn’t cooking the books in Biden’s favor? The best answer, probably, is to learn something about both the bureau’s methods and its institutional culture; corrupting the data would be very hard. (Although autocrats in other countries have done such things, and there’s no guarantee that it wouldn’t happen if Trump, well known for his mendacity, regains power.)

Another answer is to look at independent, private business data, like surveys of purchasing managers, which tell the same story about declining inflation as the official statistics.

But if all that seems too academic and out of touch, there’s the raw fact of record stock prices. As I said, the stock market isn’t a very good indicator of how well the economy is doing. Nonetheless, it’s hard to reconcile Dow 40,000 with Trump’s claim that the economy is a cesspool.

In particular, even though trying to explain stock fluctuations is, in general, a waste of time, the recent run-up in stocks probably reflects economic reports suggesting that the uptick in measured inflation earlier this year was just a bump on the way to a soft landing.

Record highs for both the Dow and broader measures like the S & P 500 are also noteworthy given that back in 2020, during Biden and Trump’s second debate, Trump — who really does like to measure economic success by the stock market — said “the stock market will crash” if Biden won. Now, everyone makes bad predictions — lord knows I have. But you’re supposed to admit your mistakes and learn from them, especially if they were driven by motivated reasoning.

Trump, however, has once again claimed that stocks will crash if he doesn’t win. He has also done something that I think has no precedent: trying to take credit for a rising stock market even though he’s out of office, claiming stock market gains mean investors are betting on his future victory.

That claim is, for lack of a better word, pathetic. And one of the things that still mystifies me about Trump’s political appeal is why more Americans don’t see this kind of whining and boasting as ridiculous.

But let’s pretend, just for a moment, to take Trump’s story about stock prices seriously. If we do, recent developments in the 2024 horse race provide a kind of test. There’s still a very good chance that Trump will win. But polling averages suggest that the popular-vote lead he had a few months ago has evaporated, even though yes, he appears to be ahead in key swing states. Betting markets still modestly favor Trump, but by much less than they did not long ago.

So if Trump’s self-aggrandizing theory of the stock market were right, stocks would be falling in response to his reduced odds of victory. Instead, they’re on the rise.

Once again, none of this should be taken as a reason to start seeing stock prices as a good measure of economic success. They aren’t; jobs, inflation and real incomes are what matter, and the case for Bidenomics rests on these fundamentals, not the Dow.

But at a time when one side of the political divide is peddling dystopian economic fantasies, it makes sense to point to the undeniable fact that stock prices have been hitting new highs.

6ixStringJack, Trump passed up the opportunity to believable claim his trial is a witch hunt and he is innocent. He has made many unbelievable claims to the media since the media can't punish him for being a lying sack of shit. In contrast to the media's weakness, a judge is strong enough to brutally punish him which is why Trump did not dare testify that he never had sex with Stormy. Was Trump fearful of being gang raped in prison for perjury? He'll never admit it!

That's right...

Trump and Joe* are tied in New Hampshire according to the Praecones Analytica that just dropped late yesterday. Actually, if you click on the poll itself and pull it up, Trump is up by 0.1 points in New Hampshire as of yesterday.

As for Washington...

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/washington/

Sure... The "Northwest Progressive Institute" just put out a poll last week showing Biden up 16 points on Trump, but a poll by The Independent Center back in mid-April had Trump up 1 point head to head and 5 points on Joe* in a 5-way race.

I think 2024 is going to go down as the election with the most swing states ever.

They should start reporting on that now, or you knuclkleheads are all going to be blindsided when Trump ends up winning states you weren't even aware he was competitive in because that was never reported.

Yanno... states that by all rights nobody but a Democrat should ever win because of the historical data, yet here we are. Everybody is getting fed up with Democrat's and Joe Biden*'s lies and terrible job performance.

As a side note, you gotta love RFK's polling. It seems that every poll he runs he wins. All that extra Nicole Shanahan Billionaire money being put to good work paying their staffers overtime to find all the right people to tell them what they want to hear.

Parroting Trump, GOP Rep. Donalds Baselessly Accuses Biden of Using ‘Injections’ to ‘Look Coherent’

May 19, 2024

Rep. Byron Donalds, without evidence, accused President Joe Biden of being “jacked up” and using “injections” in order to appear “coherent.”

There is no evidence that Biden uses or has used drugs. The Republican congressman lobbed the baseless speculation Sunday during an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo.

GOP Rep. Greg Murphy made the same assertion Thursday on Fox Business, claiming he has “evidence” (that he did not produce) to show Biden was “jacked up on something” while delivering the State of the Union address.

“I was in the State of the Union address, and Joe Biden must have been jacked up on something that day. I absolutely believe that from a medical viewpoint and actually have a little bit of good knowledge that happened,” Murphy, a surgeon, said.

“He can’t stand, and he can’t stand under the lights for that long, and I don’t think he can keep a concept in his brain that long,” Murphy added.

Murphy alleged, “I believe they gave him something to sustain the lights and sustain the vigor that he had. That was not Joe Biden. I was in there. He screamed for two hours.” (Biden was passionate that night, but no one has shown proof of any substance use.)

Despite Bartiromo asking for more details, Murphy refused to go further publicly but offered to show her his alleged proof “offline.”

“Maybe we can talk offline, and I’ll show you something that proves that,” Murphy said.

“You’ll show me what?” Bartiromo inquired.

“I think I can have some evidence that shows that he was given something before,” he said, suddenly backing down a bit on his claim that he has the evidence in hand.

Trump said — without evidence — in a radio interview following the state of the union that Biden was “all jacked up” and “higher than a kite.” Trump then said he would insist that Biden be “drug tested” ahead of presidential debates in the fall. In a speech in Minnesota on Saturday, Trump speculated that Biden will be “so jacked up for those debates, you watch!” (Trump in that speech also falsely claimed he won the state in 2016 and 2020. He did not.)

Still more classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago

May 21, 2024

As you all know, Donald Trump took reams of classified documents with him when he left the White House and then repeatedly refused to turn them over when asked. Eventually the FBI searched his home and carted away boxes of stuff.

But guess what? Even after that, Trump still managed to hold on to several classified documents. This was disclosed last year in a ruling by judge Beryl Howell, but was kept under seal until today: https://www.politico.com/news/2024/05/21/trump-classified-documents-be
droom-00159182

Throughout the opinion, Howell — who was chief judge of the Washington, D.C. federal district court at the time — described with varying degrees of incredulity how four documents with classification markings could have been discovered in Trump’s private quarters.... “Notably, no excuse is provided as to how the former president could miss the classified-marked documents found in his own bedroom at Mar-a-Lago.”

But if you think that's bad, hold on to your hat:

In a footnote, Howell also noted that another Trump adviser connected to his Save America PAC had acknowledged scanning the contents of the box that contained the classified materials in 2021 and storing them on a personal laptop provided by the PAC.

What. The. Fuck? Trump not only kept classified documents, but turned them over to some PAC flunky to scan into her personal laptop?

This case gets more bizarre every time we hear something about it. And yet somehow Trump's pal, judge Aileen Cannon, keeps finding reasons to pretend that it's tortuously complex and requires endless months of preparation. The reality is that I'm not sure I've ever seen a more open-and-shut case in my life. As near as I can tell, it could be tried tomorrow and be finished by Memorial Day without missing anything important.

Time is running out for you dildos.

Pretty soon you're going to have to admit that you actually have to win an election because you don't get to put your opponent in prison in America.

Trump scams the people who trust him
It's how he got rich, and he's not going to stop

By Matthew Yglesias | May 22, 2024

https://www.slowboring.com/p/trump-scams-the-people-who-trust

One of the dualities of Donald Trump is that while his opponents think he’s an authoritarian goon who doesn’t respect the rules, many of his fans also think that he’s an authoritarian goon who doesn’t respect the rules — but in a good way.

On the right, there is a widely held and poorly evidenced belief that Mitt Romney lost because he was too much of a nice guy and that part of what’s good about Trump is that he’s willing to fight dirty. You might not think it’s a good idea to cheat on your pregnant wife with a porn star. But conditional on having done so, playing fast and loose with campaign finance law in order to keep it covered up and win the election is better than behaving ethically and losing — because winning elections is really important. I think all partisans can sympathize, to an extent, with this logic. Nobody wants to root for the Washington Generals, and it’s easy to notice the ways in which the out-group behaves ruthlessly and ignore evidence of ruthlessness on the part of your in-group.

But Trump takes this further than a standard politician, because a huge factor in Trump-era politics is a sense among those on the right that they are besieged, socially and culturally.

Diffuse forces in academia, in the media, in public health, in libraries, in museums, and almost everywhere else are conspiring to advance a liberal agenda, and you need someone who won’t just win an election and pass some laws, but someone who will root the conspiracy out at the source, crushing the left.
In that context, the liberal fear of Trump as an aspirational dictator is part of what rightists like and admire about him. They’re not exactly saying he’ll be a good type of dictator. But they are saying they need a fighter, a tough guy, a guy who can battle a rigged system and win — and it’s good that liberals fear him.

Because of this dynamic, I think it’s important to make the point that Trump is a scumbag in ways that don’t just read as affluent privileged liberals cowering in fear. I am afraid that Trump will slash Medicaid, yank FDA approval of mifepristone, reduce regulatory protections for people with pre-existing health conditions, raise the relative price of goods versus services in a way that hurts the middle class and the poor, and otherwise implement bad public policy. But this stuff won’t hurt me personally, and I also have to admit that a GOP nominee who scans as more competent and normal — Doug Burgum, say — would probably be more effective at implementing public policy ideas that I regard as normatively bad.

What makes Trump uniquely dangerous is his disregard for the rule of law. But while it’s certainly possible that Trump will leverage that disregard to advance conservative policy aims, what he has actually consistently done throughout his career is seek personal financial benefit, specifically at the expense of his fans and admirers.

To that end, my personal skeleton key for understanding Trump has always been a scandal that doesn’t get a lot of play because it was basically legal: his brief tenure as the CEO of a publicly traded company.

Meet Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts

For the vast majority of Trump’s career as a businessman, he has been the steward of a network of privately owned companies that are referred to collectively as the Trump Organization.

But in 1995, he launched a publicly traded company, Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts (later known as Trump Entertainment Resorts), that ordinary people could and did buy shares of on the stock market. There are, of course, plenty of publicly traded hotel and resort companies these days. You can buy Hilton or Marriott or MGM shares. But these are fairly boring companies that you expect people to invest in based on boring considerations of price-to-earnings ratios and other financial metrics. Christopher Nassetta, the CEO of Hilton Worldwide, is not a household name, and nobody really cares about him unless they specifically work in some kind of hotel-adjacent field.

Trump in 1995 was not like that; he was a celebrity and showman.

Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts, meanwhile, had pretty modest actual underlying assets — the Trump Plaza Hotel and also a casino project in Gary, Indiana that was under construction. The key actual asset of the company was not the real estate portfolio but its showman. The stock traded under the symbol DJT, and the promise was that by investing in Trump’s company, you were going to become business partners with one of the great dealmakers of all time.

What wound up happening is that this company only lasted for about nine years before going under. But it would be wrong to see it as a failure, because Trump turns out to have actually been very clever about structuring deals.

He didn’t structure deals that made the company profitable and valuable, he structured deals so as to allow Donald J. Trump to tunnel money out of the pockets of DJT shareholders and into his personal accounts. That’s how he managed to go from “formerly rich guy who bankrupted himself running unsuccessful Atlantic City casinos” to “formerly bankrupt guy who is now rich again even though his casinos are still unsuccessful.” It was a tour de force of barely-legal financial scams, and a reminder that it’s a lot easier to fuck over your friends with unethical behavior than to fuck over your enemies. After all, who would buy stock in a construction project in Gary, Indiana whose main asset was Trump himself? Not rich snobs who looked down on this louche outer boroughs guy. Trump fans.

The money tunnel

The stock market boomed in the 1990s, a decade that also featured significant “democratization” of access to stock trading. A lot of middle class people got into misguided hobbyist investing, and there was a broad range of ethically questionable professional behavior, ranging from the outright criminality depicted in “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Boiler Room” to the more banal marketing of the incorrect notion that you could get rich trading individual stocks and paying commissions. As long as the market was trending generally upwards, though, even investment decisions that didn’t make a lot of sense were generally profitable, and people who stayed out of the market felt like suckers.

Also, Trump was bankrupt in the mid-1990s.

He started out his career as a rich guy the old-fashioned way — inheriting money from his dad. But Fred Trump’s business was boring. It was a lot of random apartment buildings in not-particularly-prime locations around New York City. What Trump wanted was to have a cool business, with flashy projects in Manhattan, and to bring some of the glitz and glam of Las Vegas to New Jersey. He did this primarily by borrowing against assets he’d inherited or been gifted, but with his flair for PR, it made Trump famous. Unfortunately for him, the macroeconomic situation circa 1990 was very unfriendly to people with lots of highly leveraged commercial real estate assets, so he suffered a series of bankruptcies.

The publicly traded company he launched was a clever way to leverage stock mania to get out from the debt problem. Once it existed, the company did things like:

• Overpay for a different hotel that Trump owned.

• Personally pay Trump over $800,000 in commission on that transaction.

• Pay Trump millions per year in salary, even as the value of the stock declined.

• Purchase millions of dollars in services from other companies that Trump owned.

And when the public company bought real estate that Trump had previously owned privately, the attached mortgage debts shifted from being personally guaranteed by Trump to being guaranteed by the shareholders.

Between 1995 and 2005, the company’s shares lost over 95 percent of their value. The company folded, and its remaining assets were scooped up by Carl Icahn. But Trump personally not only made it out of this jam okay, he was legitimately quite rich.

The story Trump likes to tell about himself is that he’s a self-made man who got nothing but a single generous loan from his dad. Of course, that’s false. But the counter-narrative that he’s just a rich kid who inherited a fortune is also sort of wrong. He did get a lot of money from his dad, but he’d basically lost all of it by the mid-1990s. What he owned was some not-particularly-profitable hotels encumbered by onerous debts. If you gave that to the typical person, they could probably have managed to sell it for something, but not necessarily all that much. The properties were, by that point, genuinely not worth much.

But Trump made legitimately large amounts of money while successfully deleveraging from those debts, overwhelmingly by stealing money from the investors in his company.

By the end the company was bankrupt, but he earned tens of millions bankrupting it. The same year of the bankruptcy, “The Apprentice” debuted on NBC and proved to be a huge success. Starring in a hit television show is a good way to get rich, whether or not you have business savvy. But starring in a hit television show, the premise of which is that you’re a master businessman, is also great for your external reputation. So even though all these shenanigans were covered at the time, more people watch network television (especially 20 years ago) than read financial reporting in The Wall Street Journal. So a lot of people were left with the impression that Trump got out of trouble through savvy business practice. This is true in the sense that he conned his investors out of a lot of money, but I think if you’d pitched that idea on the show, it wouldn’t have been warmly received. Americans like and respect people who build successful businesses, and that kind of blatant theft is not normally what we have in mind.

The Snake and the Stakes

You can find a lot of Matt Yglesias articles, tweets, and blogs from over the years urging Democrats to be more moderate and pragmatic and try harder to actually beat Trump.

But the way I would sum up recent American politics is that despite the very vocal levels of alarm from liberal America, at an elite level, progressives behave as if they’re glad Trump is running the GOP show. They know he is clownish, unpopular, and undisciplined, and they think he is easier to beat than a replacement-level Republican. They believe this gives them the opportunity to push the envelope a bit harder on policy aspirations than if they had to run against a Nikki Haley or a Mike Pence.

And I think there is something to that. The legacy of Trump’s term is a corporate tax cut, Roe overturned, and January 6. If it had been a Marco Rubio administration, you’d have had a corporate tax cut, Roe overturned, and some form of Affordable Care Act repeal because he’d have done a better job of working with senate Republicans and would not have made John McCain so mad. Now, of course, January 6 was really bad! But it was bad mostly in its dark potential. In terms of specific consequences, January 6 and the larger “stop the steal” movement did not impede the orderly transition of power. But that doesn’t mean it was without consequence.

• Stop the steal was a boon to the Democratic senate campaigns in Georgia that delivered Chuck Schumer his majority.

• Election denialism powered a number of really weak GOP senate nominees, likely costing them 2022 races in Georgia and Pennsylvania.

• Because Republican elites couldn’t admit to their own voters that Trump lost in 2020, he was spared the normal cycle of backlash and “here’s how he fucked up” discourse that befalls defeated presidential candidates.

On net, in other words, Trump’s election denialism pushed American public policy to the left and made Republicans worse off, while benefitting Trump personally.

He loves to recite “The Snake” at rallies and use it as an allegory about the perils of welcoming immigrants, but he is the snake who various people believe will use his cunning to advance their interests, but who primarily ends up betraying the people who trust him.

Trump reads "The Snake" poem

That’s why if you ask a random back-bench GOP state legislator about Trump, he’ll sing his praises. But if you ask a member of Trump’s cabinet, you’re likely to find someone who’ll denounce him. It’s why even though GOP China hawks like to claim Trump as one of their own, he’s already flip-flopped on TikTok for cash, says he won’t help Taiwan defend itself, and spent his whole presidency soaking up money from foreign governments.

The long-tail risk of his conduct is that something genuinely disastrous happens for the whole country. But the most likely scenario is that he continues to be what he’s been for 30 years: a grifter who rips off the people who trust him, while being relatively ineffective at pursuing his ostensible goals.

Trump tried to move classified docs away from security cameras

In case you haven't gotten enough of Trump and his inexplicable desire to hold on to classified documents, today brings yet more news:

Buried in the supporting documentation for one of the motions was a document that contained a new public revelation: Once Trump realized that security cameras at Mar-a-Lago could capture his employees moving classified government information that officials were attempting to retrieve, he allegedly ensured that they would avoid the cameras when moving boxes.

Jesus. What is the deal with Trump and classified documents? Why was he so hellbent on keeping them? The answer, as with all things Trump, is most likely "because his brain is broken," but I can't stop wondering if there's anything more to it.

Let’s Catch Up on How All of Trump’s Vice Presidential Candidates Are Humiliating Themselves

From shooting a dog, to supporting a married man’s right to make secret payments to pornographic actresses, to shooting a goat, there’s a lot going on out there.

Donald Trump needs to pick a vice presidential candidate soon. The Republican National Convention in Milwaukee is in mid-July, and Trump’s relationship with Mike Pence, who served as his running mate the last time he ran for office, became strained when Pence refused to help carry out a coup on Trump’s behalf and came somewhat close to getting murdered by a mob as a result.

Which is to say, the job is open because the previous employee who held it was nearly killed by the person doing the hiring.

AP: Biden releasing 1 million barrels of gasoline from Northeast reserve in bid to lower prices at pump

Patrick De Haan, an analyst for GasBuddy, said sale of the Northeast reserve would have little impact on gasoline prices nationally, although there “may be a slight downward pressure on prices” in the Northeast. Trump’s Money Problems Are Becoming a Crisis for the Entire Country

By David A. Graham | May 23. 2024

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/trump-s-money-problems-are-bec
oming-a-crisis-for-the-entire-country/ar-BB1mVfFD

Donald Trump is facing some of the most serious threats to his financial empire in his long and tumultuous career. That’s his problem.

But the methods he’s using to get out of those troubles make him beholden to wealthy people with interests of their own—which, if reelected president, he would be in a position to advance. And that could be everyone’s problem.

Trump’s money woes begin with his urgent need for huge amounts of liquid cash—both to cover his never-ending legal fees and judgments, and to fund his campaign. A jury awarded the writer E. Jean Carroll more than $83 million in a defamation case in January. (Trump has posted a $92 million bond while he appeals the verdict.) In February, a judge in New York fined him nearly half a billion dollars in a civil fraud case involving property valuations. He owes legal fees for many other cases he’s involved in. Making matters worse, various aspects of his business suffered during his presidency because of negative publicity, and those troubles are compounded by the current weakness of the commercial real-estate market.

To make up for these challenges, Trump has turned to a few sources. He obtained a highly unusual bond from a California businessman for the civil fraud case, having persuaded an appellate court to reduce the amount to $175 million. He has been using political donations to pay his hefty legal bills, and his campaign’s effective merger with the Republican National Committee creates a new stream of cash for those. He has also brazenly pleaded for cash from large donors, reportedly telling a gathering of oil executives that he would pursue favorable policies if they raised $1 billion for his campaign and he won in November. Finally, the Trump Media and Technology Group went public this spring, providing Trump with a potentially enormous windfall, at least on paper. (“It’s one of the most obvious worthless stocks I have ever seen,’’ Alan Jagolinzer, an accounting professor at the University of Cambridge, in England, told The New York Times.) Each of these revenue streams gives leverage—financial, and perhaps psychological—over Trump to rich people whose fortunes could be affected by actions of the federal government.

“He made very clear throughout his presidency, and in the plan since then, that he is very open to people currying favor with him by financing him in a variety of ways,” Noah Bookbinder, the president of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, told me. Previously, someone looking for favor could donate to his campaign, schedule an event at a Trump golf course, or spend big at his hotel in Washington. Now the hotel is gone, but other possibilities have arisen.

“Donald Trump’s finances and the ways of potentially influencing him have gotten more complicated than what we were talking about in 2016, and even 2020,” Bookbinder said. “It’s a whole new world of ways to potentially funnel money to Donald Trump.”

Trump’s ongoing trial in Manhattan, on charges that he falsified business records to cover up a hush-money payment, showcases a small-scale example of how this works. David Pecker, the former publisher of the National Enquirer, testified that after he agreed to pay $150,000 to purchase and sit on the story of a woman who said she had sex with Trump, he was invited to a Trump Tower meeting with officials including FBI Director James Comey and future Cabinet-level officials, and was later feted with a White House dinner. This is deeply embarrassing—for Trump, given the reason he was indebted to Pecker; for the officials, who were made to mingle with a tabloid publisher (“Here is David Pecker, he’s the publisher of the National Enquirer, and he probably knows more than anybody else in this room,” Trump joked, per Pecker’s testimony; the men didn’t laugh, he recalled); and for the country. As a matter of substance, it’s probably relatively harmless.

But if $150,000 gets you a meeting with the director of the FBI, what does $175 million get you?

That’s the question raised by Trump’s bond in his civil fraud case. A defendant who is appealing a judgment is obliged to either post the amount he owes or to get a bonding company to offer an IOU—assuring that if the appeal is unsuccessful, the penalty will be paid. Trump’s attorneys testified in court that they had tried and failed to obtain a bond for the full amount of more than $450 million, and persuaded an appellate court to reduce the amount to $175 million. Trump was then able to secure a bond—but rather than use a New York State bonding company, he got it from Knight Specialty Insurance, a California-based company. Knight is owned by Don Hankey, a relatively unknown billionaire who has made millions in subprime loans.

The bond was odd. Initial filings for it contained errors that had to be corrected. Knight wasn’t licensed in New York, and the attorney general’s office raised questions about whether the company had enough money to actually cover the bond. Justice Arthur Engoron, the judge in the case, approved it only after a hearing in which Trump agreed to place collateral assets under Knight’s control.

The strangeness doesn’t end there. Hankey told Reuters that he charged Trump below market rate for the bond. He also said he supported Trump politically previously and in the current election and called the case against him “unfair,” though he said they had never met. Hankey has a financial incentive to get in Trump’s good graces: Federal regulators have taken actions against companies he controls at least four times in the past decade, NBC News reported, including repeated fines levied by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. As president, Trump could shield Hankey’s business from enforcement. He has made political interference in the Justice Department a centerpiece of his campaign for president, and during his first term, the CFPB was moribund and shackled.

“If you look at the laws of what an in-kind contribution is, it is exactly this— when you give a goods or services for not the full price because you want to curry favor with a candidate,” Adam Pollock, an attorney in New York and former assistant attorney general, told me. “In this day and age, nobody ever prosecutes those kind of in-kind contributions anymore, ever. But there’s a reason those laws exist. It’s because you don’t want to provide that kind of untoward access of how money corrupts politics. And I think we’re all just so jaded.”

Worth noting is that if Trump loses the appeal, he will still have to pay the penalty, or else he faces the prospect of the state attorney general seizing assets. (If appeals courts affirm Engoron’s ruling, Trump and his sons will also be barred from serving as officers of a company in the state for several years, which could paralyze the Trump Organization’s operations as they exist.) Trump has already acknowledged that he doesn’t have sufficient cash. That’s not a huge surprise—many of his holdings are in real estate, which is not liquid—but it is a problem for him, especially because the market for some of the assets he holds, specifically his large portfolio of urban office buildings, is depressed right now.

So when Trump Media and Technology Group, the parent of Trump’s Truth Social site, became a public company earlier this spring, it seemed like a timely windfall for the former president. Trump has a knack for wriggling out of a jam, and this looks like yet another example. His stake in the company is estimated at about $6 billion. But experts told me that paper wealth like this doesn’t always translate to liquid assets. The company’s equity is trading more like a meme stock than anything related to its underlying fundamental value: The price has dropped, and analysts expect it to fall further eventually. Regardless, Trump is barred from selling shares for months and may be unable to use stock as collateral. Once he is allowed to sell, he will be unable to cash out quickly, as doing so would tank the share price. (The company faces other question marks related to its auditor, who has agreed to cease operations and been charged by the Securities and Exchange Commission with “massive fraud.”)

This means that TMTG may not provide a miraculous cash infusion benefiting Trump, but it’s still a big gain for him. TMTG also illustrates other ways in which Trump is susceptible to financial leverage. The investor Jeff Yass was one of the biggest shareholders in the company that merged with Trump’s to go public. Assuming that Yass still owns the shares, this gives him substantial sway in keeping the inflated stock price high, which would in turn help Trump’s net worth swell. Perhaps Yass would not have invested simply to aid Trump—or to cozy up to him. But he and his wife are already the biggest political donors so far this election cycle, with all of their funds going to conservative causes. A Trump campaign source told The New York Times that Yass was expected to donate to pro-Trump efforts; Yass said he never had and would not. Because many donations can be hidden, the truth is almost impossible to know.

Yass is also a major investor in ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. Trump was once a noisy critic of the Chinese-owned social-media platform. “As far as TikTok is concerned, we’re banning them from the United States,” he said in 2020. He issued an executive order to do so if ByteDance didn’t sell TikTok, but the order was soon blocked by judges. When Congress, backed by the Biden administration, took up a law to do the same this year, however, Trump suddenly turned against it. “Just so everyone knows, especially the young people, Crooked Joe Biden is responsible for banning TikTok,” he posted on Truth Social in April. The reversal came shortly after a meeting with Yass.

The public has no way to know why Trump flip-flopped, and both Trump and Yass say they didn’t discuss TikTok at their meeting, but some skepticism is reasonable under the circumstances. “We don’t know for sure whether [the meeting] resulted in Donald Trump changing his position,” Bookbinder told me. “But it’s certainly something where the American people have to question that.” Any other person of means might also conclude that a good way to get Trump to take up a view that benefits them—including reversing a long-held position—is to make a large investment in him.

Meanwhile, many of the old methods of influencing Trump remain. A Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund invested $2 billion in a private-equity firm founded by Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law. Kushner has recently been raising money for the former president’s campaign. Serious questions also surround a development in Serbia led by Kushner and Ric Grenell, a former Trump-administration official who is rumored to be a candidate for secretary of state or national security adviser in a second term. Serbian and American observers have charged that the deal, which did not move through typical channels, is an attempt to win favor with Trump. All involved parties deny it, naturally.

That Trump would seek these bailouts should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with his business career. When he has struck serious financial difficulties in the past, he has sought and usually found some new source of funds. In 1990, for example, with Trump’s casino in Atlantic City foundering, his father walked onto the floor and bought $3.5 million in chips. (This turned out to violate state rules.) Later, when others had cut him off because of his habit of not paying his debts, he found in Deutsche Bank a willing lender. But DB was no more successful in dealing with Trump. An old joke goes that if you owe the bank $1 million, the bank owns you, but if you owe the bank $100 million, you own the bank. Trump defaulted on more than $600 million in DB loans.

When he was fined in the civil fraud case earlier this year, Trump found that none of his old lenders, including DB, was willing to help. His new sources of cash knew Trump’s history of stiffing those he owes, but they may have calculated that they stand to gain something far more valuable than repayment with interest: the power of the federal government at their beck and call.

Trump’s Assassination Fantasy Has a Darker Purpose

When Donald Trump insinuated this week that Biden and the FBI were out to kill him, he showed how central violence has become to his conception of political leadership.

Trump declared Tuesday on Truth Social, his social-media platform, that he “was shown reports Crooked Joe Biden’s DOJ, in their illegal and UnConstitutional Raid of Mar-a-Lago, AUTHORIZED THE FBI TO USE DEADLY (LETHAL FORCE).”

Trump has a way of projecting his own vices onto others. His lawyer recently argued before the Supreme Court that ordering the military to assassinate a political rival “could well be an official act.” There is probably some limiting principle to this particular argument, but the fact that the issue is even under discussion is not a good sign for our democracy. Perhaps he believes that Biden was out to shoot him because he thinks that’s an order that presidents can freely give.

The FBI had carefully arranged to enter Trump’s property when he would be out of state—an odd way of carrying out an assassination. Still, the idea that Trump had been at physical risk rocketed across Truth Social. The X account of the House Judiciary Committee Republicans reposted—with the addition of siren emojis—a thread insinuating that FBI agents were acting like the “Gestapo” and had “risked the lives of Donald Trump, his family, his staff, and MAL guests.” Trump’s campaign upped the hysteria with a fundraising email declaring that “BIDEN’S DOJ WAS AUTHORIZED TO SHOOT ME!” and that “Joe Biden was locked & loaded ready to take me out & put my family in danger.” By evening, the longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon was asserting that “this was an attempted assassination attempt on Donald John Trump or people associated with him.”

Trump and his fans have gone from simply damning the “deep state,” the loose term for anyone in national security or law enforcement who hinders his autocratic aims, to portraying federal agents as assassins.

Trump has become more and more apocalyptic in his language. This week, he sent another dangerous signal to his supporters: FBI agents are an armed enemy, ready to assassinate the former president. Unless, of course, Trump and his mob get to them first.

Inside the “America First” Movement’s War Over Democracy

By Andy Kroll | May 22, 2024, 05:09pm

https://www.propublica.org/article/michigan-republicans-maga-meltdown-
democracy-elections

The most important fault line in the party now is democracy itself. Today’s Republican insurgents believe democracy has been stolen, and they don’t trust the ability of democratic processes to restore it.

This phenomenon is evident across the country, in Georgia and Nevada, in Arizona, Idaho and Florida. But it’s perhaps the starkest in Michigan.

I traveled back to Michigan earlier this year to understand how this all happened. I sought out the activists waging this struggle, a group of people who don’t trust institutions or individuals except Trump and one another — and sometimes not even that. Could they triumph over the elites? I found a glimpse of a future post-Trump Republican Party and, all around me, danger for our system of government and the state of the country.

“We can’t keep going through election after election like this where a large plurality of the country just does not accept the outcome of the majority and refuses to abide by it,” said Jeff Timmer, a former executive director of the Michigan Republican Party. “That’s when the system falls apart.”

A Call From God

I drove west toward Lake Michigan to meet Ken Beyer for lunch. Barrel-chested and with a neatly trimmed goatee, Beyer is in his late 50s but looks younger. He’s disarmingly earnest, the kind of guy who’d offer to help you fix a flat tire in a snowstorm. In less than two years, Beyer had risen from a political nobody to a district chair in the state GOP and a leader of the “America First” movement in Michigan. Like many of his “America First” allies, he questions whether democracy still exists in this country. “I don’t know if any election is fair anymore,” he said.

Over chicken tenders and iced tea, Beyer, a church-going Christian, told me about a series of what he saw as divine revelations that had delivered him to this point. The pandemic and 2020 election had shaken him. He no longer recognized his own country. He feared that the moment had come, he said, “where freedom and the American dream end.”

His next revelation happened on Jan. 6, 2021. Because he was convinced that Democrats stole the White House from Trump, he had gone to Washington to make his voice heard and show support for the president. Standing on the steps of the Capitol, he encountered a reporter with the conservative outlet Newsmax who needed help carrying gear. Beyer grabbed a tripod and backpack and filled in as a makeshift field producer for one of the biggest events of the 21st century. “What God wanted me to do,” he later said, “was help capture the history of what’s happening and get the truth out of what really was going on there.”

Back in Michigan, Beyer enlisted the help of a young videographer who had produced content for Beyer’s plumbing business, and together they churned out videos about COVID-19 (overblown), election fraud (rampant) and the “truth” of Jan. 6 (“a big prayer meeting”). He read about disturbing allegations about voting-machine software changing votes. He listened to poll workers allege that mysterious suitcases of mail-in ballots had arrived overnight at the state’s largest ballot-processing site in downtown Detroit (a claim that was later debunked). The more he heard, the more he came to believe that his home state had been central to the Democrats’ plan to steal the 2020 election.

In his free time, Beyer urged Republican lawmakers to investigate the allegations of fraud made by Trump and his allies. Most Republicans brushed him off. A few, like Peter Meijer, had openly turned on Trump, voting for impeachment or dismissing Trump’s stolen-election theories. Beyer couldn’t understand it. “Why weren’t they fighting for him?” he said.

According to more experienced people in the party, there was a simple answer: Many of the claims brought forward weren’t true. A long-awaited investigation by a Republican-led state Senate committee found “no evidence of widespread or systematic fraud” in Michigan.

If Republicans wouldn’t act, Beyer reasoned, then they were just as bad as the Democrats. Trump supporters in other states had also encountered Republican indifference in response to Trump’s fraud allegations. What were they supposed to do now? Trump’s latest lie showcases MAGA persecution complex at its finest

Getting Americans to believe he’s been mistreated is key to Trump’s political survival.

In campaign seasons past, presidential candidates generally used the long Memorial Day weekend to roll out an avalanche of patriotic messaging about their vision for America’s future. Not so for Republican presidential contender Donald Trump, who chose instead to spend the days leading up to the holiday accusing President Joe Biden of scheming to assassinate him.

Trump being Trump, this whole scandal isn’t without its irony. After all, it was Trump’s legal team that earlier this month claimed before the Supreme Court that presidents could legally assassinate their political rivals. And it was Trump — not Biden — who last November pledged to “root out” political opponents he described as “vermin.”

Trump Pressures Republicans to Pass a Law to Keep Him Out of Jail Forever

The former president is convinced state prosecutors will target him again after a second term, and wants the GOP to solve that problem for him

Trump’s push for new legislation is just his latest idea for shielding himself from criminal accountability. As Rolling Stone previously reported, Trump and his allies also plan to have the Justice Department‘s Office of Legal Counsel issue a memo advising that the DOJ should prohibit the prosecution of presidents even after they leave office.

Such a memo would codify Trump’s arguments in federal court, and now at the Supreme Court, that presidents have expansive presidential immunity, even after they leave office, and that impeachment is the only avenue available for holding a president accountable for crimes committed while in office.

His attorneys tried to use the pending Supreme Court case weighing those arguments as an excuse to delay the New York City hush money case, on the grounds that some of the evidence included in the trial dated to his time in office.

Judge Juan Merchan dismissed the attempt.

The Democrats get the cause and effect backward, thinking that if Trump would stop acting crazy, and if he would instead throw a light switch back to normal behavior, America could go back to normal. But Trump is the effect, not the cause of all this craziness.

I hang around Trump voters for thousands of hours per year and Trump knows perfectly what his voters want. They want a guy who breaks all the rules to serve their mentally unstable and highly emotional needs. His voters are causing all the trouble and that is why things won't go back to normal or even reasonable:
Quote:

A huge factor in Trump-era politics is a sense among those on the right that they are besieged, socially and culturally. Diffuse forces almost everywhere are conspiring to advance a liberal agenda, and they need someone who won’t just win an election and pass some laws, but someone who will root the conspiracy out at the source, crushing the left.

Trump voters are like dogs that are not housebroken. What do you do with these animals other than put them outside so that they do not ruin the furniture and defecate on the floor as Trump voters did during the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol? Do you talk your dogs into better behavior? That is not how it is done on the TV show "Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan". Talk doesn't turn bad-behaving dogs into good dogs and talking won't work with Trump voters or 6ixStringJack.

Special counsel seeks court order limiting Trump’s false claims about FBI

gag-order-in-classified-docs-case-after-trump-locked-loaded-claim

Special counsel Jack Smith filed court papers Friday asking a judge to order Donald Trump not to make any further incendiary claims suggesting that FBI agents were “complicit in a plot to assassinate him.”

In the filing to U.S. District Judge Aileen M. Cannon, Smith argues Trump’s statements earlier this week exposed FBI agents involved in the case “to the risk of threats, violence, and harassment.”
Quote:

The Government moves to modify defendant Donald J. Trump’s conditions of release, to make clear that he may not make statements that pose a significant, imminent, and foreseeable danger to law enforcement agents participating in the investigation and prosecution of this case. The Government’s request is necessary because of several intentionally false and inflammatory statements recently made by Trump that distort the circumstances under which the Federal Bureau of Investigation planned and executed the search warrant at Mar-a-Lago. Those statements create a grossly misleading impression about the intentions and conduct of federal law enforcement agents—falsely suggesting that they were complicit in a plot to assassinate him—and expose those agents, some of whom will be witnesses at trial, to the risk of threats, violence, and harassment. The Court has an “independent obligation to protect the integrity of this judicial proceeding,” ECF No. 101, and should take steps immediately to halt this dangerous campaign to smear law enforcement.

Congratulations! You have precisely stated what Trumptards admire about him. He says whatever he wants. But what you didn't state is that Trump is not a responsible adult male. The DOJ did state it:
Quote:

Trump, however, has distorted the standard inclusion of the policy limiting the use of deadly force by mischaracterizing it as a claim that the FBI “WAS AUTHORIZED TO SHOOT ME,” was “just itching to do the unthinkable,” and was “locked & loaded ready to take me out & put my family in danger.” Exhibit 1. These deceptive and inflammatory claims expose the law enforcement professionals who are involved in this case to unjustified and unacceptable risks: they invite the sort of threats and harassment that have occurred when other participants in legal proceedings against Trump have been targeted by his invective. Those risks have the potential to undermine the integrity of the proceedings as well as jeopardize the safety of law enforcement. The Court has previously underscored its “independent obligation to protect the integrity of this judicial proceeding,” ECF No. 101. And the Court has the power and responsibility to “impose additional or different conditions of release,” 18 U.S.C. § 3142(c)(l)(B)(xiv), that are “reasonably necessary to ... assure the safety of any other person and the community.” 18 U.S.C. § 3142(c)(3). A condition of release that prohibits the defendant from making statements posing a significant, imminent, and foreseeable danger to law enforcement agents participating in the investigation and prosecution of this case is warranted and necessary here. Such a prohibition will also minimize further prejudice caused by the defendant directing false and inflammatory messages regarding the facts of this case to potential jurors who may be summoned by the Court for jury service in this matter.

Trump is not responsible for his actions. Neither are you. Trump lacks conscientiousness.

Conscientiousness is a fundamental personality trait—one of the Big Five—that reflects the tendency to be responsible, organized, hard-working, goal-directed, and to adhere to norms and rules. Like the other core personality factors, it has multiple facets; conscientiousness comprises self-control, industriousness, responsibility, and reliability.

A conscientious person is good at self-regulation and impulse control. This trait influences whether you will set and keep long-range goals, deliberate over choices, behave cautiously or impulsively, and take obligations to others seriously. (The other Big Five personality traits are extraversion, agreeableness, openness, and neuroticism.) Conscientiousness is generally a key ingredient for success—in love as well as work. It's also a major predictor of health, well-being, and longevity.

You Have To Be A Very Special Person Rationally To Buy Trump's Stock

May 25, 2024

The emperor has no clothes — or, in this case, followers.

It seems Trump’s Truth Social has fewer than 80,000 daily users — down each of the last two months. DJT reported a loss last quarter of more than $328 million on revenues of $771,000.

This, after more than 2 years’ operation!

Yet at Friday’s close, DJT sported an $8 billion market cap, or roughly $100,000 for each of its current active daily users.

What makes those users so valuable?

They pay nothing!

Advertisers do know that, as Trump fans, they’ll buy anything. And that’s something.

(Well, right? Trump Bibles? Bobbleheads? Bonds? Big lies?)

But even then, $771,000 in revenue works out to just $10 each per quarter, $40 a year.

So if the company were so well managed by CEO Devon Nunez that it had zero expenses going forward — which, having lost $328 million in a single quarter seems unlikely — is there any way each $40-a-year user can be worth $100,000?

To someone like Putin, who desperately wants to see Trump win in order to conquer Ukraine and its neighbors, it may be worth pumping a few billion into the stock.

(I’m not saying he has, though he could certainly afford to.)

But that’s the only even remotely rational reason to buy it.
