But seriously... What's up with Kevin, Second?

Dude has voted Democrat all his life and he's dying. I thought Democrat voters never get sick and live forever?

You have me confused with him. I have not been sick even for one day in the 21st Century. Kevin Drum, on the other hand, seeks out the best medical care, unlike the typical Trumptards I know who just curl up and die.

Health update
Author Kevin Drum, Published on March 17, 2023 – 9:46 am

We have dates! My CAR-T treatment is scheduled for April 25. There are several days of pre-treatment, so I will be up at City of Hope starting on April 19. I'll return home whenever they think I'm ready, probably around the second week of May.

And then we wait to see if it worked. Tick tock.

Oh. Okay. So it's not ALL Democrat voters that never get sick and are going to live forever.

It's just YOU, because you've got a God Complex.

I'll have to remember that the next time you tell us that all Democrat voters never get sick or die because they vote Democrat and be sure to remind you that that only pertains to you because you are God.

Here we go! The country is waking, and about to see ad after ad showing Trump being Trump. I think it possible Biden begins to lead Trump by double digits by March. Remember, the Republican party is only two thirds the size it was when it comes to Trumps Republican party.

I go to the doctor despite NOT being sick. I go to the dentist despite NOT having a toothache. I get vaccinated, unlike Trumptards who will NOT get vaccinated because they are fearful of being contaminated. On the other hand, Trumptards in Texas are hideously unhealthy since they do NOT take the precautions that sane people routinely take.

Donald Trump's Taiwan Remarks Spark Fury and Concern

Jan 21, 2024 at 4:49 PM EST

Trump suggested the United States should not help Taiwan in the event of an invasion from China. Why? Trump is bitter:

"Taiwan did take all of our chip business," Trump said. "We used to make all of our own chips, now they're made in Taiwan, 90 percent of [them]...Remember this, Taiwan took, smart, brilliant, they took our business away."

"Trump accuses his opponents of being weak on China and then he essentially openly gives China a green light to invade Taiwan without US retaliation, if he were to be elected," policy expert Ed Tarnowski wrote in a post. "This is not serious policymaking!"

Senate GOP fears drop in Trump enthusiasm, energy

GOP senators say there is less enthusiasm for former President Trump among Republican-leaning voters compared to 2016, a drop in voter energy that was apparent when only 15 percent of Iowa’s registered Republicans showed up for Monday’s caucuses.

Lawmakers acknowledge the weather was a factor behind the low turnout in Iowa but point to other signs of diminished enthusiasm for Trump, something that could hurt down-ballot Republican candidates in swing states.

Reagan made a deal with Iran. If Iran waits until after the election to release American hostages, Reagan will reward the Iranians.

It’s All but Settled: The Reagan Campaign Delayed the Release of the Iranian Hostages.

The 1980 October Surprise theory refers to an allegation that representatives of Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign made a secret deal with Iranian leaders to delay the release of American hostages until after the election between Reagan and President Jimmy Carter, the incumbent. Reagan won the election, and, on the day of his inauguration — minutes after he concluded his 20-minute inaugural address — the Islamic Republic of Iran announced the release of the hostages. The Reagan administration's practice of covertly supplying Iran with weapons via Israel likely originated as a further quid pro quo for having delayed the release until after Reagan's inauguration, setting a precedent for covert U.S.-Iran arms deals that would feature heavily in the subsequent Iran–Contra affair.

Everything is going to hell, per Trump

Trump: "Which is incapable of solvin’ even the sollest problem. We are an institute in a powerful death penalty. We will put this on"
There is video of Trump saying this.
9:42 PM · Jan 22, 2024
https://twitter.com/BidenHQ/status/1749638608577761385

On his good days, Trump is still fine. On his bad days he can barely string two sentences together. Still, his meaning is clear: America is going completely to hell. It's doom porn. For some reason, there's a big audience of people who just can't get enough of this stuff. Like Ted Johnson, who was profiled today in Politico:

‘Our System Needs to Be Broken, and Trump Is the Man to Do It’
https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/01/22/new-hampshire-primar
y-voter-00136850

“People need to be held accountable. That’s why you’ve got to break the system to fix the system,” he said. “Because it’s a zero-sum game right now. And to be honest with you, the Democrats are genius. They did anything they could do to win and gain power, even if they lie, cheat, steal. … What they’re doing is they’re destroying the country. Who could bring it back?” He answered his own question: “Trump’s the only one.”

What's remarkable is this description of Johnson:

He’s 58. He’s married to his second wife and has three young adult sons. He was in the Army for 22 years — he retired as a lieutenant colonel — and now he is a senior project manager for an IT security company and works from home. He lives in a classic three-bedroom house he bought almost four years ago for $485,000 that’s now worth roughly a quarter-million dollars more.

This is not some discouraged working-class guy who lost his job to outsourcing and has never been able to recover. Johnson is married, upper middle class, makes good money, and lives in a nice, safe small town where almost everyone has a college degree. But after watching Fox News he went from thinking he'd vote for Nikki Haley to being a die-hard Trump supporter. Because Democrats are destroying the country and someone has to take a wrecking ball to it before we can rebuild.

I know that not everyone is as well off as me. Still, it's just a fact that the vast majority of Americans are in pretty good shape and the country as a whole is as strong as any country in the world. The burning desire among many conservatives and liberals to believe that everything is horrible — and getting worse — is nothing short of inexplicable.

New York Times columnist Zeynep Tufekci wrote “A Strongman President? These Voters Crave It.”
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/14/opinion/trump-voters-iowa-caucus.ht
ml

Tufekci interviewed more than a hundred Trump supporters. Tufecki found that authoritarian leaders project qualities that many voters admire. Not one of the voters she talked to uttered the word “authoritarian” — but they are drawn to Trump’s “strength” and his “ends-justifies-the-means” leadership style. In other words, authoritarianism.

What is particularly alarming is that authoritarian leaders like Orbán in Hungary and Erdogan in Turkey keep getting re-elected as those countries grow more antidemocratic, fascistic, and corrupt with each election. One tool is the nearly total control of media.

Trump’s appeal isn’t all that mysterious and that acknowledging that can help us grapple with its power.

What Trump has to sell is a very dark picture of our country. With a self-serving “Deep State” calling the shots. He will replace “the swamp” with his own deeper, darker, corrupt state filled with lackeys — there will be no Mattis, or Kelly, or McMaster, or Milley. But you can bet there will be places for the Stephen Millers of Trump World.

“The Mandate’s true purpose is not to enhance workplace safety, but instead to ramp up vaccine uptake by any means necessary,” Judge Kurt Engelhardt wrote for the unanimous panel in a withering opinion that extends the court’s earlier stay on the OSHA mandate, which had been challenged by GOP states, numerous employers and individuals.

With his approval numbers sagging, Mr. Biden in early September ordered OSHA to require private employers with 100 or more workers to mandate that their employees be vaccinated or tested weekly. “Our patience is wearing thin,” he declared. The mandate at the time polled well among most Americans.

Opposing Kavanaugh by "Whatever Means Necessary"

https://www.heritage.org/courts/commentary/opposing-kavanaugh-whatever
-means-necessary

Quote:

Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) is out to show us that he’s one politician who can keep a promise. On July 9, within minutes of President Trump’s announcement of Judge Brett Kavanaugh as his Supreme Court nominee, Schumer vowed to “oppose Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination with everything I have.” When he said everything, he meant it.

I can’t prove it, but if I were a betting man, I would wager that Schumer’s statement was written ahead of time, leaving a blank for the nominee’s name. Other Senate liberals, such as Kamala Harris (D., Calif.) and Mazie Hirono (D., Hawaii) actually announced their opposition nearly two weeks earlier, without even knowing who the nominee would be.

Nothing that the confirmation process had to offer was relevant to these senators because they already had the one piece of information, the one word, that really mattered: Trump. They would oppose the nominee because he or she would be Trump’s nominee. Period.

...

No, the only thing that matters to liberals is preventing Trump’s nominee from joining the Supreme Court. To pursue that political goal, Senate Democrats picked up the script from the beginning of the previous Republican presidency. Within days of President George W. Bush taking office in 2001, Democratic Leader Tom Daschle (S.D.) vowed to use “whatever means necessary” to defeat his judicial nominees.

That’s what Democrats are doing today, by any means necessary. They automatically credit an accusation even though every person the accuser names denies any knowledge of it. Democrats demand a new hearing for an accuser who cannot identify the time or the place of an alleged incident. They refuse to share with the rest of the Judiciary Committee what they claim is evidence against Kavanaugh. And, when The New Yorker traffics in what it admits is an unsubstantiated rumor, the hit piece’s author says the accuser came forward because “Democrats came looking” for someone to say such things.

Here's somebody else who thinks Trump is a Dictator.

Rachel Maddow: Trump Supporters Are Voting For The "End Of Politics," They Want A Dictator

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2024/01/23/maddow_trump_suppor
ters_are_voting_for_the_end_of_politics.html

Quote:

That is what he is offering. The strong-man model is what the Republican base is enthused about. That is something that sets him apart from every other Republican candidate. I think we are naive to think that he's tricking people into supporting him and then, surprise, he's going to act like a dictator. What he is offering is strong-man politics, the end of elections, the end of politics, the sidelining, or the domesticating of the judiciary and the Congress. He will be the man in charge and they will get it done. That's what he is selling. That is what they are very eager to buy.

...

JEN PSAKI, MSNBC: How did we get here? How did we get to that stage where you have this person who has such a control of a political party? Even beyond the politics of it, where that appeal of the strong-man argument, this worship of dictators, is so appealing to a large swath of the country?

Maddow also told you this in March of 2021:

"The virus stops with every single vaccinated person. A vaccinated person gets exposed to the virus, the virus does not infect them. The virus cannot then use that person to go anywhere else. It cannot use that person to go anywhere else. It cannot use a vaccinated person as a host to go get to more people."

She and MSNBC can try to delete history all they want, but we won't ever forget what you did.

Haley on Tuesday night said that a victory for Trump in the primary was a victory for President Biden in the general. It’s not so cut and dry, but the polling suggests that she’d be a tougher matchup for Biden than Trump would.

Yes, Trump does currently lead Biden in most national and swing-state polls. But Haley also holds her own against the likely Democratic nominee, despite her relatively low name recognition. More critically, Trump is disliked by a majority of the American people, and that is unlikely to change (we are all extremely familiar with Donald at this point). Only a little over 37 percent of Americans have an unfavorable view of Haley. Given that Trump has been airing lots of ads portraying Haley as too liberal, it’s likely that a disproportionate share of Haley’s detractors consist of Republicans who would ultimately come home for her in the event that she were nominated.

The 52-year-old Haley also would have thrown the president’s advanced age into even sharper relief. Given Biden’s high disapproval numbers, he will need to convince many voters who do not like him that they despise the alternative even more — so much more, in fact, that they should bother to turn out and vote for an octogenarian they resent.

In this respect, Trump is a far more useful foil for the president than Haley would have been.

Loser: The Koch network

When Haley’s star began rising in 2023’s final months, she received an influx of cash from Trump-skeptical Republican mega-donors. Perhaps the biggest catch was an endorsement from American for Prosperity Action (AFPA), the billionaire Koch family’s political vehicle. Warning that Trump would likely lose to Biden in a general election, AFPA devoted tens of millions of dollars to Haley’s long-shot campaign to break his stranglehold on the GOP.

Oops.

It’s possible, maybe even likely, that all that money narrowed the gap between Haley and Trump. But the goal was not to lose gracefully; it was to win. And with Haley losing in her best early state, it’s clear now that this goal is out of reach. The Kochs may well have lit their money on fire.

Of course, the Kochs have money to burn. But the defeat runs even deeper than the loss of a few millions: It’s a devastating blow to their ideological vision for the party.

Broadly speaking, traditional Republican elites like the Kochs believed in a party that would advance extremely conservative priorities — especially lowering taxes on the wealthy — but do so within the confines of “normal” democratic politics. They were comfortable harnessing radical energies, such as their support for the Tea Party protests in 2009 and 2010, but ultimately believed they could keep a lid on the base’s passion.

Obviously, Trump upended everything. Their last-ditch hope for 2024 was that the base could be made to see reason after the Trump-led GOP’s defeats in the last three election cycles. Haley, a skilled politician friendly to the Republican old guard, seemed like their best chance for getting their message across.

That she has seemingly missed her shot reflects that these particular elites were living in the past. The Republican Party clearly belongs to Trump and his devotees. If the GOP’s billionaires really do believe that Trump is unacceptable, they now have one serious option: start opening their wallets for Joe Biden.

No it doesn't.

That was only due to some outdated outlier polls by Wall Street Journal, The Messenger/Harris X and FOX News that had Haley up on Biden* by 17 points, 10 points and 11 points, respectively.

Currently, Trump is +2.9 on Biden* and Haley is only up +1.1 in the aggregate, with a majority of the polls showing Haley losing to Biden*.

Candidate / Favorable / Unfavorable
Trump / 41.6 / 53.9

Age is Haley's only good quality. It won't help her at all in this election.

Yup. Fuck the Cock Brothers. I bet they don't spend any more money like that on Haley after she got destroyed last night.

New Hampshire was the only state she had any hail mary chance of winning. Not only because of all that Cock money, but the fact that they have open primaries and there was a big ground campaign to get Biden voters to register as Republicans to vote against Trump in the Primary and it still failed hard.

What are you talking about, Vox? They were doing that last week. A lot of that Cock money went to getting people who otherwise would never vote Republican to vote Republican against Trump.

Today, I saw a comic that explains how life works.
https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/consciousness-3

Student asks: Professor, why do we even have consciousness? It’s clear most of our actions are done automatically and “free choice” is just a story we tell ourselves. Why pretend “we” are in control? Think about how much control we have over the upcoming Presidential election.

Professor answers: That’s easy. You get a fitness benefit from being able to imagine scenarios. In social creatures, that includes modeling other animals. As a byproduct, some creatures become able to model themselves.

Student: Okay, but why all the lying?

Professor: Imagine you wake up one morning in a car driven by an insane monkey. You can only observe the monkey from the back seat. The doors are locked. You try to talk to the monkey, touch the monkey, but it won’t listen.

You spend a little while freaking out, clawing at the windows, but it becomes clear there’s no escape.

What’s the only way to get by without going mad?

Student: Decide you are in control of the car.

When hovering the mouse cursor over the comic, this line appears:

"Now, realize there is no Self. Only an insane monkey who can't reach the brakes.”

Arizona GOP Chair Resigns After Kari Lake Threatens "More Damaging" Recording

Update (1445ET): That didn't take long.

One day after the Daily Mail published a leaked recording of Arizona GOP Chairman Jeff DeWit trying to bribe Trump ally Kari Lake to stay out of politics for two years, DeWit resigned.

"This morning, I was determined to fight for my position," he said in a statement reported by Just the News. "However, a few hours ago, I received an ultimatum from Lake's team: resign today or face the release of a new, more damaging recording. I am truly unsure of its contents, but considering our numerous past open conversations as friends, I have decided not to take the risk. I am resigning as Lake requested, in the hope that she will honor her commitment to cease her attacks, allowing me to return to the business sector—a field I find much more logical and prefer over politics."

* * *

Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake called on the state's GOP chair Jeff DeWit to resign after a recording emerged of him trying to bribe Lake to stay out of politics for two years.

In the recording, first reported by the Daily Mail, DeWit, 51, can be heard asking lake to name her price not to run.

"There are very powerful people who want to keep you out," he can be heard telling her in a conversation recorded last March.
Jeff DeWit and his wife Marina with President Donald Trump.

He then, after asking her not to mention the conversation to anyone, makes his first offer:

"So the ask I got today from back east was: "Is there any companies out there or something that could just put her on the payroll to keep her out?"

Lake is taken aback.

"This is about defeating Trump and I think that's a bad, bad thing for our country," she replied.

DeWit later framed it in a different way.

"Just say, is there a number at which -

"I can be bought?" Lake interjected. "That's what it's about?"

"You can take a pause for a couple of years. You can go right back to what you're doing," DeWit replied.

Lake repeatedly shuts him down, and says she wouldn't pull out for a billion dollars.

Holy shit, I just heard that audio this morning.

Kari Lake is awesome for putting that out there. You know shit like this happens every day in both parties, but when do you get the opportunity to listen to an actual conversation.

I don't blame him for resigning. She set him on fire with gasoline.

I hope she releases the audio anyway.

I'm going to find a video about a guy who is popular on Tik Tok that alleges a similar thing happened to him but it was from the Democratic Party. Unfortunately, I don't believe he showed his audience the email he got, but he just put them on blast for sending it to him instead of taking the money.

GOP senators seethe as Trump blows up delicate immigration compromise

In recent weeks, Trump has been lobbying Republicans both in private conversations and in public statements on social media to oppose the border compromise, according to GOP sources familiar with the conversations, because he wants to campaign on the issue this November.

The border is a very important issue for Donald Trump. And the fact that he would communicate to Republican senators and congresspeople that he doesn’t want them to solve the border problem because he wants to blame Biden for it is appalling.

Sure. Hollywood always made worthless crap. Hollywood has also made a lot of great stuff too. Businesses in every sector go out of business every year. This is not specific to Hollywood, nor has it ever been.

For over a decade now though, they have felt like they were invincible. Invulnerable to criticism of their cynical pandering, with the full force of the media behind them. And it didn't matter how much money they were losing because there was always more.

Those days are over now.

And the irony is that it was Joe Biden* and the Democrats we have to thank for that.

Look at what Universal makes, sorted in order of how much money, adjusted for inflation:

1 Jurassic World
2 The Super Mario Bros. Movie
3 The Lost World: Jurassic Park
4 How the Grinch Stole Christmas
5 Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
6 Despicable Me 2
7 Meet the Fockers
8 The Secret Life of Pets
9 Furious 7
10 Bruce Almighty
11 Minions
12 Apollo 13
13 Liar Liar
14 Jurassic World: Dominion
15 The Mummy Returns

https://www.the-numbers.com/market/distributor/Universal

Except for Apollo 13, #12 on the list, it is all a bunch of meaningless crap.

One man's crap is another man's treasure. People like to be entertained and not preached to when paying to see a movie.

If Hollywood never made another movie, we'd be better for its death. What about Hollywood's employees? They can sell coffee, another worthless industry providing a similar addiction that we'd be better off if it had never been discovered by drugged goats in Ethiopia, around 800 AD.

Yeah dude. We know this is your line now.

Just burn everything down because it's not doing what you want it to do. "Oh yeah. Fuck movies. Fuck Hollywood. I never cared about them anyway."

But we have your post history here. When I was talking about Disney putting out woke trash Lightyear a few years back and correctly predicting it was going to fail, you didn't say that Hollywood should die then. You attacked me and said that Disney didn't make movies for me.

The difference between you and me on this matter is that I actually don't watch movies or TV except for the rare occasion I'm watching one with my dad or my brother. If Hollywood actually did die, it wouldn't affect my life at all. I don't know what you'd do with your free time if you weren't able to pirate all of those movies though. Probably just post even more dumb shit on this website.

It's impossible to ever have any real discussions with you because all you ever want to do is get into arguments that you never win and you constantly move the goalposts because you have no ideological core and you spend all day, every day contradicting your own arguments. We've seen you do this with posts you put in 2 different threads in the RWED only 5 minutes apart from each other.

You're a fuckin' goofball.

6ix, you don't have money, which is why Disney doesn't produce entertainment to please you. You are worthless to Disney unless you have money to buy a ticket. That is how free market capitalism has always worked.

Disney’s decision to oppose Florida’s “don’t say gay” law is all about appealing to Disney’s consumers. Republicans who most yearn to make America “great” again — aging, rural, white men — are at the bottom of the consumer totem pole and lack the financial clout to swing the free market. Conservatives just can’t handle the fact that their political ideology is toxic to people who buy tickets for Disney World and Disney movies.

Fox News agitator Laura Ingraham had previously warned that if companies like Disney didn’t “stay in their lane” — focusing on maximizing profit, but shutting up about politics — “everything will be on the table” if Republicans return to power in November, including “your copyright and trademark protection, your special status within certain states, and even your corporate structure itself.” GOP Senator Marsha Blackburn denounced Disney’s criticism as “how the woke left extremists are using corporations to push their agenda.”

Here’s the irony, though: While Disney controls municipal functions in Reedy Creek, its special tax district, it also foots the bill — for the fire department, sewer treatment, and so on. The elimination of that special status thus will save Disney $163 million annually, passing on $1 billion in debt to taxpayers in Orange and Osceola counties and forcing massive local tax hikes. So what in the name of Adam Smith’s invisible hand is going on here?

Why don't you post more links of your pirated Firefly stuff, you piece of shit?

Quote:

Disney’s decision to oppose Florida’s “don’t say gay” law is all about appealing to Disney’s consumers.

No it's not. It's pissing off the people who used to pay to see Disney.

Look at their stock prices.

Democrats and Leftists are done, buddy. Expect the new Bob to be fired from his position at Disney and a huge change in the corporate structure to occur over the next year. Disney is tired of losing money, pandering to a woke Titter mob that doesn't bring them any cash.

I didn't bother reading the rest of your bullshit, as per usual.

We'll see the box office results of this woke dumpster fire and I'll give you my I Told You Sos then.

You've accumulated quite a collection of them so far, haven't you?

Seems I was right again. Imagine that, huh?

The new Bob WAS fired.

Lightyear bombed big time.

Disney didn't make anything that ANYBODY wanted to see in 2023, and they lost over $1.8 Billion dollars at the box office, not including the Billion+ they lost on their streaming service in 2023.

The only thing I was wrong about in April of 2022 was that Disney was tired of losing money. Now that Echo is out and failing, we'll see if they've finally decided to change course or if they just want to go down with the ship.

For now, I'm going to play Devil's Advocate and be fair to them regarding Echo. That TV series had started production just a few weeks before the above conversation was taking place between Second and I, so they had no freakin' idea what was coming for them in 2023.

San Francisco Chronicle: Disney’s Pixar to undergo significant layoffs later this year

Quote:

Pixar, the Emeryville animation studio owned by Disney, is set to undergo a significant reduction in its workforce this year.

Initial reports suggested a potential layoff of up to 20%, a projection that would impact approximately 240 employees out of Pixar’s team of 1,200. However, the studio has clarified that these numbers are too high, and the number of affected employees is yet to be determined.

The final count will depend on various factors, including production schedules and staffing requirements for upcoming approved projects. Pixar informed TechCrunch, the first to report the news, that the layoffs are not imminent but are planned for later this year, aligning with the company’s shift toward producing less content.

Sources indicate that many affected people were hired to produce content for the streaming platform Disney+, which is yet to be profitable..

It was only January 12th of 2024 when the above sentence was written and they're already far ahead in the running for the Understatement of the Year with that one.

Quote:

Disney acquired Pixar in 2006, following the success of animation hits like “Toy Story” and “The Incredibles.” In June, the studio underwent a round of layoffs that affected 75 people, including two executives associated with the box office disappointment “Lightyear” — director Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman. Last summer’s layoffs marked the first significant cuts for Pixar in a decade.

THAT is the point you get out of this?

I'm dealing with a fucking idiot.

Yeah. I'm aware of it. I'm the money guy here that's always shitting on everybody else for buying all the dumb shit they don't need with money they haven't even made yet.

I'm also the guy who doesn't pay rent or a mortgage. Doesn't have a car payment. Doesn't have school loan debt. Doesn't have credit card debt. Hasn't had any debt of any form since August of 2005.

6ix, your economizing, and teetotalism were forced upon you by your unemployment and alcohol-related illnesses. Congratulations for bending to reality before it killed you but you are not the kind of guy to learn from history. (It is a historical fact that drunkenness and proliferate spending cause penury and sorrow. So few know history until it happens to them.) Some of the biggest Trump followers don't know history until they are punched and smacked in the face:

This week, Republican governors across the country escalated their conflict with the Biden administration over the southern border by invoking the same legal theory that slave states wielded to justify secession before the Civil War. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, joined by 25 other GOP governors, now argues that the Biden administration has violated the federal government’s “compact” with the states—an abdication that justifies state usurpation of federal authority at the border. This language embraces the Confederacy’s conception of the Constitution as a mere compact that states may exit when they feel it has been broken. It’s dangerous rhetoric that transcends partisan grandstanding. And as before, it’s being used to legitimize both nullification and dehumanization.

Consider the very first line of a statement Abbott issued on Wednesday that was subsequently backed by the other Republicans, which states, “The federal government has broken the compact between the United States and the states.” That language is strikingly similar to the very first line of the secession ordinances passed by slave states when they purported to leave the union. Most of these ordinances began with a declaration that the state sought “to dissolve the union” that was “united under the compact” known as the Constitution. It was this “compact”—not national sovereignty, but a contract among states and the federal government—that constituted the United States of America. The secession ordinances asserted that the federal government, and the president especially, owed certain constitutional duties to the states under this contract. It had allegedly abdicated those duties by threatening to restrict slavery and disrespecting the rights of Southern states in other ways inextricably linked to the maintenance of white supremacy. Any state, these ordinances concluded, was therefore entitled to depart the union and become “free and independent” once more.

President Abraham Lincoln was staunchly opposed this so-called compact theory. As he explained in his first inaugural address, “The Union of these States is perpetual” under the Constitution. The United States do not form a compact, but are a “country” bound together by “national fabric.” This argument provided the entire justification for the war in its early years, which Lincoln initially framed as a battle against secession, not slavery. (“If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it,” he wrote in 1862, “and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it.”) The union that Lincoln hoped to save was an agreement between the sovereign people of the United States, not the states themselves. And so, the president argued, the people of a particular state could not break away of their own volition.

I live in Texas. I speak Spanish. The border is doing fine, but it is the Trumptards that aren't, especially our Trump-loving Texas governor. I won't tell you the story about how that worthless asshole, Gov Gregg Abbott, ended up in a wheelchair, but it was his fault. Signym, you should be sent back to the old country your Nazi father came from. 6ix, sue your drug-addled mother for what she did to you. Meanwhile: the ultimate Trumptard talked to the jury, yesterday. Today the world discovers that Trump is very persuasive:

That bill had nothing to do with border security.

It was for BILLIONS of dollars to house and clothe and feed even more illegal invaders AND give BILLIONS MORE to Ukraine.

Signym and 6ix are too stupid to understand, but a Republican Senator will try to explain it in simple words:

Republican Senator Gives Away the Game on Why They Killed Border Deal

Josh Hawley is admitting point-blank this fight was never about the border at all.

By Ellie Quinlan Houghtaling / January 26, 2024 / 11:16 a.m. ET

https://newrepublic.com/post/178488/republican-senator-hawley-admits-t
ruth-killed-border-deal

Senator Josh Hawley said the quiet part out loud on Friday, explicitly tying the GOP’s border security grandstanding to a coordinated effort to hurt President Joe Biden’s reelection chances.

“Senator, is this deal dead, effectively?” Fox News’s Laura Ingraham asked Hawley Thursday evening.

“I hope so,” Hawley said. “It should be. If it’s not dead yet it should be dead. There is absolutely no reason to agree to policies that would further enable Joe Biden.”

The Senate reached a bipartisan border deal this week, which would include additional funding for border security as well as aid for Ukraine. But the minute Donald Trump criticized the deal, Senate Republicans caved and said they probably won’t pass it.

Hawley’s statement is more proof that Republicans aren’t all that interested in the so-called border crisis. They just want to use it as a political tool in the 2024 election.
