Did not get done what I wanted to get done today.

I put 12 pavers in, but my buddy had called me earlier in the day and said what he was going to try doing to fix his pool and I called him back and told him I was coming over since it sounded like a 2 man job to me. The pavers can wait and the lawn didn't need to be mowed yet.

It's going to be more work than he thought it would be, and he needs to get some more materials, but we got this.

Stayed long enough to have dinner with them before he was off to another job, and by the time I got home I just wasn't feeling like going back to working on pavers for an hour and a half before the sun went down.

Got all my errands run early in the morning though, so at least a few things were accomplished. I'm kind of aching from shoveling into rocks and concrete yesterday and I think I'm a little sun sensitive after being out in it for 3 days. It was only like 63 degrees here today, but it felt a hell of a lot hotter when the sun was beating down on you.

Tomorrow is another day. I'm going to watch Episode 5 of Dark Matter tonight after I do a little research on materials for my friend's pool.

Going to call a few local suppliers for my friend tomorrow.

I'm trying to talk him into replacing the entire wall of the pool because of the damage, and I think it's a job the two of us could handle, but I don't know if he's going to go for it.

None of the big box stores carry sheet metal wider than 2 feet and he's going to need more than that if we're going to fix it right. Pretty sure a local supplier could offer that up for us though, and that way we'd be able to avoid a steep shipping fee any of the online suppliers charge for it.

I dunno... I know it would be a big job for us to do it all new on our own, but he'd practically have a brand new pool at that point since the posts and deck are solid. But if we just buy a sheet long enough span 1 foot past two of the posts for a patch job it would probably be 1/6th of the price and a lot less work. He'd probably get another 2-5 years out of it....

probably.

Since I broke out in a weird rash last Friday I've been trying to get a decision on whether I should get my first infusion tomorrow.

Saturday... Sunday ... Monday holiday ... then taking and uploading pix to Dr Derm and Dr Rheum and endless phone calls. Was refused for a clinic appt yesterday bc of cough, but by sheer persistence got one today. So then strep titer blood test which won't be in until 2-3 days from now. Dr Rheum was out sick today but I bugged the office until they sent her the pix, and she said "NO infusion, see me Monday!"

Yes ma'am!

Yeah.

Above ground pool.

Somebody at a pool store got it in his head that after sacraficing the existing liner, it's possible to repair the damage/rusted parts of the wall by affixing sheet metal to them with spray adhesive and duct tape, after properly prepping the existing wall and before putting on a new liner.

I don't believe that person who planted the seed had any idea how extensive the damage underneath the liner was. I certainly didn't until it was opened up. My buddy taped up the outside where rust had shown up last year, and it's probably a good thing that he didn't take that tape off before draining the pool.

It's actually split down the middle from about one foot up from the bottom to one foot down from the top. This isn't just rust spots... it's just a big rust hole now. It wasn't like that when he taped it from the outside last year.

He was just going to cover it that way with a single 26 gauge sheet of rolled steel that was 2 foot wide by 4 feet tall. I don't trust that at all with the weight of that water when its full. I'm amazed the thing hadn't blown out already after we saw the true damage when the liner was cut away. I said we at least need to get a sheet that's 4 feet tall and wide enough to span at least a foot past 2 of the posts to have the support of those posts. And as much of that rust as possible needs to be removed and primered a few times for any hope for that spray adhesive to have a chance of holding for the long haul, and not just rely on the 10 feet of super expensive gorilla tape he bought to hold it.

Any thoughts?

Is my fear of the pool blowing out one day anyways warranted? I just imagine a stray 4 foot by 6 foot sheet of razor sharp steel cutting off somebody's head as they fly by it while 18,000 gallons of water are emptied into the yard right through it's vicinity within 5 seconds.

One thought: rust is self- catalyzing. In other words, wherever there is rust, even a little, it will create more rust. Which creates even more rust.

So it's not enough to do a 95% rust removal job and then just primer it over. If they still sell it, you should get some kind of rust inhibitor paint.

Is it just one panel that's rusted? If so, that seems weird. But if it's just one panel, can you just replace the whole thing, and attach it mechanically to the posts? Drill holes and use bolts or something? Or is that not an option?

I have no idea how a rusted panel might fail. In my expeirence, rusted metal tends to fail slowly. In other words, the rusted part may crumble but the remainer will still hold. But if you're worried about an attachment failure, it depends on how the attachment is made and whether it's attached to sound metal.

Sorry I can't be more help.

So I looked up the current lineup of "rust converters". Most DIY converters use tannic acid, which locks up the rust and presumably deactivates it. After that, I presume paint. You still need to remove the bulk of the rust, tho.

It used to be zinc chromate paint, but chromate is a known human carcinogen. I think commercially they zinc coat steel which creates galvanized steel. How about galvanized sheet metal?

If you're interested in the topic of rust prevention I can research it further. But I don't know enough about the specifics of the pool to post anything useful.

No need for an apology. I don't think there's much info on this type of thing at all.

If you saw the damage, most people would either have bought another pool or at least abandoned this until if/when they could afford another new pool.

I really couldn't explain how this rust spot happened. There's smaller rust spots around the pool, but this one was pretty huge. I'm just surprised it didn't go all the way to the ground. I think there was probably a small hole pretty high up on the liner there for years and it was allowing water to get behind it and rust that wall out pretty bad.

He called that local place and they're cutting him a very thick 20 gauge piece of 4'x6' sheet metal which would span past both posts for only $80, which is a great price because online the cheapest I found among the very limited options was $165 and the shipping alone was $5 more than the piece he's buying. And that was only 26 gauge.

So the piece will be strong...

He'd all but nixed the idea of replacing the whole wall last night. He just called me to thank me about finding that place that's cutting the piece for him, and he's just not going to listen to me. He says he's not buying any primer, and he'll use some spray primer if he has some in his garage.

When I told him he's installing a 4'x6' razor blade on the end of the pool that people are most likely to be flying past if it finally does give out, he told me that the likelihood of anybody being in the pool when that happens is so small it's not worth thinking about and if anything were to happen while his daughter was in there, he'd be there with her. Okay... I don't think you understand that having her dad there with her in that situation isn't actually going to help anyone and now you've just got two people likely to have a limb cut off or knock their heads into each other as they're forced out at a speed that he isn't going to understand unless it happens to him.

Not only isn't he going to bolt any of this, which isn't a big deal to do, but he won't buy that primer and sand as much of the rust off as he can before spraying and taping the new piece to the existing piece. I even offered last night to come over one day and do all that myself. He doesn't want it done.

I tried telling him that those flimsy walls that pools are installed with might be flimsy, but the entire product as a whole ends up strong and is designed in such a way that everything passes safety standards. And that he could throw all of that out the window right now. I know for a fact that if code enforcement were to see how that pool is going to be patched up they would make him drain it out immediately and tear it down. I'm normally no fan of code enforcement because how abusive and unreasonable they can be, but this is one of those safety situations where I feel like they would actually be serving people rather than just being a cash grab and an endless source of frustration.

He wants a bigger pool and/or an inground pool in the next year or two now that he's back to making big money again, but he doesn't want to spend the money or the time to do this right in the meantime.

I just hope nothing bad happens. I won't ever step inside that pool.

I told him that I'm done helping him on this and I can't be a part of it anymore and I wished him luck.

Yeah. I appreciate that. I believe I've watched that one already. I probably watched 10 of them last night that had damage to varying degrees, although none of them matched his particular problem.

I can't even get him to sand and prime anything, so bolts or rivets are out of the question.

At the end of the day, the only thing that is going to keep that water in the pool is the force of the water sandwiching the old walls in between the posts and the new sheet. I have zero faith in any spray adhesive or tape holding anything up for more than a few days after the liner is up there and humidity further screws with the stickiness on completely unprepared surfaces.

I'm no physicist. Maybe the water pressure alone is plenty enough to keep this thing together.

But I'm not even going to let him use one of my rolls of aluminum tape, even though I think that's a better option than duct tape. I think this thing has a better chance than a coin flip of falling apart and hurting somebody pretty badly if it does, and I sure as hell don't want it being blamed on my idea of which tape to use if that happens.

I'm kind of pissed about this whole thing right now. I gotta go back outside and get some work done to blow off some steam.

Nah. This is a guy I've known since kindergarten.

Cocky and stubborn as a sonofabitch, for sure.

Honestly, even though I know it would wreck his mood for at least a week, what I'm hoping happens is that he does his non-fix fix, pays the guy to put the liner in and while he's filling it up the thing explodes and he learns a $1,000 lesson.

I'm not being mean here. I think that's the best possible outcome where nobody even has a potential of being hurt. Otherwise, the longer that thing is still standing the more I'm going to worry about it.

And I will be the only one worrying about it.

I would never say something to his family about it being unsafe and disrespect him like that even though we're all tight like family.

WTF do I know? I'm just a jack of all trades and master of nothing. And I do have a pretty long history of blowing potential eventualities out of proportion. In my mind I'm imagining a pool failure to be a Michael Bay movie. Or even more accurately, the blood elevator scene from The Shining.

They'd probably just fall straight down wherever they were standing. It's only a 4 foot pool.

Oh... I managed to finish the pavers today, so one fence down.

Took me damn near all day, so the lawn still isn't mowed and it's raining all day tomorrow. Going to be taking a break tomorrow for sure.

I'd show you pictures, but with the two psycho autists we've got here, pictures of the outside need to stay off this site. We know one of them is a retiree and the other one is jobless and still lives with his parents, so they've both got as much free time as I do and instead of putting it to work being productive and creative things, I'm liable to have my house swatted if either of them figured out where I lived based off of anything I've said in here coupled with identifying pictures like that.

It looks great though.

Let's see how long it holds up to the ants and moles. Not long I would assume.

That's okay. They're really just placeholders for me at the moment. I think I may be integrating one of my future property drainage solutions right through there and out to the street at some point, and the pavers will ensure I don't have to do the hard part again.

I'm probably going to end up doing the landscaping and waterproofing on the back of the house last at this point. I can't really do that tar in the rain when it's still cool, so that kind of pushes wrapping up that part toward mid to late summer, which was when I intended on starting all of this work.

I'm really glad I started it this early in the year despite the rain every few days. It's so much better to be doing all the digging when it's in the 60s and 70s, and the mess that I had imagined may happen if things were dug up like this when it was still raining a pretty good deal was way overstated in my brain. There's been zero basement leaks and the only real mess happening at all is a little mud splash on the foundation that I have yet to prep and the bottom of the siding. No biggie.

It's pretty sweet that by the time it really starts getting hot, I'll be done with all the digging I intend on doing this year.

Congrats!

Despite family medical issues and household chores (cooking, cleaning, household finances, home-grown therapy for dear daughter etc.) I'm chipping away, an hour or two at a time, at re-landscaping and general yard work.

Not sure if I mentioned it but I did weed and paper over the veggie garden and planted tomatoes and zucchini. I'll be doing more weeding and papering over this weekend.

That paper really prevents a lot of weeds from sprouting. Once I get a significant portion of the front yard papered over I'll order mulch. Once the mulch goes on the paper starts to disappear, so I have to put on at least 3" of mulch to also prevent weeds. Learned the hard way that mulch disappears over time and needs to be refreshed every two- three years, if not planted.

Yeah. It feels good to be back to work again. Eventually I'll have to get around to doing that generator plug setup and getting a 2nd sump well in there, but it was just causing a mental block for me on the work at the moment.

I really do enjoy working outside when the weather is good, and there's plenty of stuff to do out there for sure. I think this year I want to get all the landscaping done that isn't going to require burying any pipes for drainage, and get any part of my house and garage that isn't touching the sand pit finished. That would be about 90% of the house, 2/3rds of the garage, 1/2 of the driveway and the rest of the fences.

The total amount of work to do out there is pretty daunting, but if I start with the easier/quicker stuff first and chip away at that, eventually I'll be left with just one major project revolving around getting water up and out of the pit and down toward the street.

It will be nice how much easier mowing my lawn will be when this is all done too. Probably 60 to 70% of my lawn is in the front, but it takes almost as long to mow the back yard right now just because of all the obstacles, walls and fences that I have to deal with back there when there isn't really anything in the front that slows me down outside of the street sign and electric pole on the corner.

I'll probably save 15 to 20 minutes every time I mow the lawn after this is done, and the need for edging things and pulling weeds would be all but eliminated.

Glad to hear you still can find the time to chip away at it too. I don't know if I'd have that in me, myself. I tend to dive into projects and spend most of my focus and time on them until they're done once I get rolling. Especially when it's really dirty work like this. I figure if I'm going to get dirty enough where I need to shower immediately when I go back inside, I want to get about 6 to 8 or 10 hours of work done. Eventually, I won't have any work to do outside anymore that leaves me and my clothes and shoes looking like I was rolling around in mud all day.

I don't think you're ever going to be able to stop weeds from popping up, no matter what you put under the mulch or how high you stack it and keep up with refreshing it every few years. I still get plenty of weeds popping up from my 2+" of river rock with the weed fabric underneath. But the difference between how many I used to get before doing any of that and now is staggering. I'd put the level of weeds I get in the hoasta beds is now about 2 or 3% of what it once was. I used to waste DAYS during the summer getting rid of weeds around the half of the house surrounded by the beds, but now all I need to do is load up my pump sprayer with weed killer twice per year and hit them while I'm going around hitting the other stuff like the cracks in the driveway and the curbs by the street.

It will never be perfect, and you're always going to have weeds no matter what you do. But it's still such a worthwhile job to do. Perfect is the enemy of the good. Done is better than perfect.

Good luck with your work too.

Actually it was dry for me while I was out and about and is still dry. Have to see if any rain shows up later today or this evening. Suppose to be soggy tomorrow and for Monday and Tuesday.

I knew I was going to have to replace my car battery since my old man said the one in there was replaced 9 years ago, but I didn't know how immediate that would be...

I had kind of a feeling that she was starting a little rough the other day when I ran errands, but I didn't give any indication that it was thinking about not starting on me. Fast forward 2 days later and the car was completely dead. Fortunately I have that really nice car charger that has the 200AMP start feature, so getting her running wasn't a problem. Swapped out the battery and everything was fine now.

Unfortunately, the reason I wanted to go out in the first place was a bust. I had a prescription to pick up and they didn't get it ready for me until 4:30 today. I thought they only closed early on Sunday, but I got there at quarter to 7 and sure enough they were closed.

Drat.

Made a few car mods while I was at it, too...

First off, when I checked their work putting my battery in and making sure it was actually a new one, I noticed that they didn't screw the clamp down. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to do it either since the pole seemed to be too short for the job. I mentioned it to the guy who hadn't worked on my car when he walked by me and he told me that the other guy said the battery was strapped down with a zip tie and whatever metal bit the battery pole was supposed to go into just didn't exist.

LOL... I'm sure my dad zipped that battery down 9 years ago and didn't think to tell me about it. Not going to fault him for that.

I also noticed when I got back into my car that my GPS that I just mounted to the window was laying on the floor. The original mounting foam/tape was junked with the old car since there wasn't any way to get it off and reuse it. So I got my heavy duty velcro with 3M and put that on the window and the mounting bracket of the unit. So I put it back up there and as I was driving it fell right back down on me.

...Double Annoying...

And that F*)#ing seat belt beeping is pure Chinese Water Torture, and I was in no mood for it today.

So I bought twist ties and super glue at Dollar Tree and now that piece of velcro is part of the windshield and the battery is strapped down securely.

Oh... and I took a pair of tin snips and cut one of the seatbelts in the back and commendeered the latch plate and now it's a permanent fixture inside the driver's side buckle.

I'm sure there was a much more civilized way to go about procuring the same outcome.

Our pharmacy is very accommodating but boy, are they slow. I don't mean that it takes them two hours to fill a prescription, I mean it sometimes takes days. (Question about Rx, needs new Rx, not in stock, too soon etc) And their "automated system“? I've tried speaking into the phone. It never understands me. I've also tried entering the Rx # into the keypad bc I thought FOR SURE it would understand those entries! Wanna know how many Rxs were recorded by the system?

ZERO!

Yeah, it can be a pain!
t least we can drive. I'd hate to have to walk or take the bus. That would take forever!

*****

I have to chip away at things for two reasons:

B) I live
by the clock. I have to walk and feed the dog by noon (earlier, since hot weather is coming!), wash the dishes (already rinsed but still...), make hubby's b'fast, wake up dear daughter and on occasion blast her out of bed and to get ready for exercise.

Then there's talking things over with hubby: who's doing what, when. And listen to podcasts with him. Sometimes housecleaning (yesterday I vacuum- blitzed the house; day before I scrubbed the shower stall, sometimes it's sorting mail, dealing with the bank, paying bills, getting a menu and grocery list ready of food that doesn't trip either hubby's diabetes or daughter's IBS that they both like, etc etc). Then doing some homemade therapy with dear daughter. And, of course, endless phone calls and Dr appointments. Make dinner. Before making dinner is when I squeeze in whatever project I happen to be working on.

B) And if it's physically demanding, that's all I have in me.

I only think I'm capable of doing the projects that I do because I don't have the balance necessary to juggle the needs of a family with my own. I don't know how you or anybody else does it. It must be a lot easier than I imagine it would be though, or nobody would do it.

I'd be really great at it, until I wasn't. I don't think my personality type meshes at all with the constant needs of a family unit. As far back as I can remember I've always done pretty much everything in fiery bursts. But then I run out of gas and I'm pretty much useless until I get fired up again.

I don't go anywhere without my wristwatch strapped. It was a habit I'd gotten out of for many years because a cell phone has the time, but back before I got rid of my cell phone I had a manager that was coaching me for future job interviews (outside the company) and he said that if he sees somebody is wearing a wristwatch that means that time is important to them, and he's much more likely to hire that person over anybody relying on their smartphone to tell them the time. I've been wearing a watch ever since.

Right now, time doesn't mean anything to me as far as any daily itinerary goes. I just kind of do what I want whenever I get around to doing it most days. I usually only really hyper-focus on time when doing outdoor projects and I'm racing against the sun going down.

But when I do work a job for somebody else, time becomes extremely important. It always was, even when I was relying on my cell phone for the time. I'd constantly be pulling it out to check the time to figure how much more work I could get done before it's time to punch out. The idea that me not wearing a wristwatch would convey that I wasn't conscious of time while I was working hadn't occurred to me before that manager told me how important that was to him in an interview. I immediately went out and got a watch and put that perception of me by anyone else to rest. And boy is that easier to just raise your arm and look at the time. I can't believe I went so many years without one.

My pharmacy has its issues. I don't blame them for the problem today though. It was just the last annoyance in an annoying day. The icing on the cake.

For a long time there I was pre-contacting my doctors to renew my scripts when they'd run out. Not even realizing that the pharmacist already does that with the doctors on their own. But they're not really all that quick about it though. They just put a fax out to the doctor and as far as I can tell they don't follow up if they don't get an answer back. If I go out of my way to do this, the scrips are filled immediately on the day they would have if the scrip hadn't run out. But if I let the pharmacy take care of it, the scrips could be a week late.

The only other issue I've had is that sometimes on the day a scrip is supposed to be ready, they can't get it ready because they don't have any of that product and need to wait another day for it to be sent to them.

Both of these problems are annoying, and should be easily fixable if their processes were tweaked. If done correctly, they could be completely automated too. They already know what day every one of your scrips are due for a refill. They already know if you have any refills left in your current scrip. All of this data is available for every customer on their online account page.

They already know what inventory they have on hand. I'm pretty sure when we're talking about prescription drugs that it would be law that they had to.

There is zero reason that in 2024 there are any delays for prescriptions because the doctors haven't been contacted in advance to refill the scrips or there is not enough inventory on hand in the store to give to the customers on refill day.

ETA: And why the hell is anybody still faxing anything in 2024???

I do all of my comms with my doctors online. Any time I contact them about a scrip, one of the people they pay to sit and reply to these things all day is the one who takes care of that stuff and AFAIK the doctor's don't even get bothered with it. They're pretty damn fast about responding to any inquires that don't require the doctor specifically to reply too.

The "FAX Job" is probably the once daily job that everyone around the office hates doing and the person who drew the short straw is stuck doing it that day. If the pharmacy was dialed into that system and was able to request prescription updates from the same people online, there would be a lot of man hours saved on both sides nationwide, and any prescription refill request would be filled in hours instead of days.

And think of all the trees that need to be cut down to fax all these scrips every day.

Jeez... I hope the pharmacy is at least using a computer program to fax those over to the doctors and they're not actually printing them out and using a physical fax machine to send them over or that number of trees just got doubled.

I noticed that about you. You'll be on fire for months at a time, and then kind of disappear for a month or two. I get a little worried that you'll get into a deep funk when that happens. You might want to think of some sort of low-level activity to keep your engine ticking over. Nothing too time consuming, just something engaging.
Or maybe it's just the way you work, when you're working for yourself, you're aware and OK with it, and I needn't worry.

I've even eaten thru a heavily chromed back and pitted a gold plated one. That's one of the reasons I set so many timers and alarms: it's too damn difficult to pull my cellphone out to check the time. So I've learned to have it keep track for me.

That, and I don't multitask like I used to.

Our healthcare provider has a messaging system too, with a selectable title "Refill medications" which means "write a new scrip". When they see that, the nurse just fills it out and e-scrips to the pharmacy. It's a lot more reliable than having the pharmacy do it. Like you said, the pharmacy never follows up.

The only hitch is with controlled substances. I don't know if the pharmacy requires an actual mailed hardcopy or if a fax of the hardcopy will do, but I know the doctor has to fill out an actual form that keeps a carbonless copy.

We used to go to a CVS pharmacy that drove me nucking futs. I'd go to pick up several Rxs for us. So they'd look on the main wall where many alphabetized Rxs were hanging. Then, not finding it there, they had to go to a shelving unit and dig around the unsorted Rxs. If not there, there was another overflow area a little further back. And they might have to do this three or four times, if the Rxs were filled at different times and not stapled together.

And all I could think of was ..."HEY! MANAGER! Instead of flogging your people to work faster (and make mistakes, which they did*) how about you get off your manager's ass and get a SINGLE space built that can accomodate ALL of the Rxs and save at least 10 minutes each Rx?!"

And one time I asked for a price check on a controlled substance, and the pharmacy tech accidentally erased the Rx from the system.
POOF!
My first two thoughts were

"What kind of stupid software ALLOWS something like that to happen? Nobody should be able to casually modify the database!" and

"Poor guy obviously didn't get all the training he needed"

Getting a new Rx on a controlled from a doctor who had just written it took a lot of 'splaining.

* But the coup de grace for that pharmacy was when they gave our caregiver coumadin, a powerful blood thinner, instead of cardura, a blood pressure medication. Fortunately she asked us to look at the new label, and my head kind of exploded.

I appreciate the worry, but it's fine. At least it has been so far. My lows were certainly a lot longer and far more destructive back in my drinking days than they are now.

They're still not good, but they're not self-destructive like they used to be. The worst part about them is that if I let them go on for too long then bad habits can pop up like weeds again. But I'll take forgetting to take my medicine or vitamins for a day or two over cracking open the first beer to start off a 2 day drinking binge any day.

I think I probably am bi-polar like my mom and brother and uncle were.

It's actually pretty darn useful during those manic times if you can channel that energy into positive things. But boy are the lows low. I don't sit around feeling sorry for myself or have a noggin full of negative thoughts and energy like you'd typically think somebody who was depressed would be. I just lack any and all motivation with no sense of when I'm going to find it again is all. And when you don't have a job or a schedule to maintain, it can be very easy to just do nothing and not worry about it until that light switch goes back on. Let's just say I waste more than my fair share of time doing mindless activities like playing video games and falling down youtube rabbit holes.

I've always been like this. Even when I was a kid I would clean my room and closet until it was immaculate, but then I'd just let it slowly fall back into disarray until I couldn't take it anymore.

I think that knowing this about myself has always been a very strong motivator for having done things in my life and set myself up the way that I have. I know that when I'm on point there's nobody you could trust more to surpass any expectations you had for a job, but when I'm not on point you can't rely on me for anything and you're just going to have to wait until I'm good and ready to get it done.

I know the rest of the world isn't very likely to wait around on me if I owe them a favor or I'm drawing a regular paycheck from them. So why not set myself up in such a way that I can fall into the funks without putting myself or anybody else out, right?

I do find that I can enjoy my life a lot more, both the highs and the lows, if I am in a position not to lose anything other than time on my end and not to have inconvenienced or otherwise piss off somebody I care about or who is just beneficial not to put out when I'm in those moods. It makes getting back to action pretty seamless, and I don't feel guilty for not getting right back to work until I'm darn good and ready to. That's my luxury in life.

You should see my wrist. After a day of working in the mud, it's the only clean part left of my arms, and after I'm showered up it's got tan lines.

I couldn't live without one these days. I'd be trying to figure out what I could paint the back of a watch with if my skin was eating through them.

I always know when it's 4:30PM because I set an alarm for my friend's dad one day years ago and never bothered un-setting it. Sometimes I manage to turn it off, but then I fiddle with something one day and it's back on again. I did that about a week ago and now when I'm working I get 30 seconds of beeping at 4:30.

That's the only alarm I got on my cheap Casio though. I bet you probably could set an alarm every 5 minutes with a different ring if you wanted to on that phone of yours though, huh?

It still wouldn't be enough for me. When I'm working on something I'm looking at that watch as involuntarily as I breathe.

Yeah... and I think the service is only going to get worse. It used to annoy me to have problems and every time I'd go there, there would be the pharmacist always sitting on her ass and at least 8 other people around her, with half of them looking like they're standing around doing nothing. But the last 6 months I see as few as 3 people back there, with no more than 5 or 6 depending on the time of day. I don't usually see anybody doing nothing like I used to, for sure. I think they let a lot of their technicians go over the last year. The hold time if you try to call them for something has gotten a lot longer for sure. I usually don't bother trying that anymore and if I need to talk to somebody I just do it in person. I'm there often enough where that's never been a chore.

But seriously... That pharmacist job must be a real sweet reward for spending those extra few years in pharmacy school and cramming all those medication names and which ones don't play nice together into your head. They're like the babysitter for the techs who do all the work. I have yet to walk into the pharmacy in 15 months to pick up a prescription where I wasn't welcomed to the site of the pharmacist sitting on her ass in the center of the room while the people making 1/5th or less money are the ones doing all the work.

Can't hate the player though. I know how it is. Of all the jobs I've worked in my life all over the spectrum, the easiest and cleanest jobs I ever had were the ones that payed all the money. The highest paying job I ever had by far was the easiest thing I'd ever done... being nothing more than a glorified babysitter for some computers that cost more than anything I'll ever own. They were so important and expensive that the generator "room" that was built for them was around the size of my house and probably could have powered a small town. They had no problem paying me a stupid amount of money to make sure that it was behaving and it was well taken care of, and didn't mind that 90% of the time I was there I was surfing the internet or reading books. Just as long as I was right there to fix any problems or get the right people on the horn immediately if the problem was above my pay grade.

And now most of those computers and systems don't even need babysitting anymore. I wonder what the people I used to work with who survived the merger are doing these days. There's no way any of them are still getting paid to do what we used to do back in the aughts.

Wow, that was some set of servers you were babysitting, SIX! I can't imagine what organization would have such ginormous servers to require so much power except telecom or the NSA.
You must have some pretty good software skills to be entrusted with such a beast.

Nothing as cloak and dagger as that, I'm afraid. Big financial hub is all. You don't want to even know what the FED/Government charges per half hour if you're late sending them all the financials for the day at 2:00AM. I'm sure whatever that figure is today would blow that number from 2009 right out the water too.

I knew a thing or two. My self-learned tech knowledge was responsible for any of the real money I've ever made in my life. It was just always pretty hard to get my foot into the door without a piece of paper saying that I got a degree though. Made the most of it whenever I could though. But like I said, they don't even need anyone like me anymore. I'd figure that 90% of the jobs that were in that building before the merger moved operations up north aren't even jobs that exist anymore.

Had I survived the layoff, the new server room that I was going to work in every day required a retinal and thumb print scans and voice activation. Not only that, but you were doing those while standing on a plate that would weigh you and if you were +/- 10 lbs from what the database said you weigh it wouldn't let you in.

No thanks. A little too Orwellian for my tastes. I bet some of them have a barcode or an RFID implant to get around the building at this point. Back in my day I just had my card on my lanyard to buzz me into the doors I had access to.

Yeah... Know thyself.

You're not doing yourself any favors if you gloss over or try to hide your shortcomings from other people. You need to accept them and embrace them. If it's within your power, work on changing the things that you can and after that you just need to figure out how to work around them.

These days I do. I talk to people frequently enough that they start to get worried if they don't hear from me now that I'm diabetic. Even though I have that well under control at this point, even in my down times, that's not going to stop people from worrying if I don't reach out.

I don't really have anybody that's medically knowledgeable though. But I do have two emergency pens if anybody ever finds me passed out. I carry one around with me in my tool bag (man purse) and the other one stays put in the same place at home. Everyone I regularly talk to knows where these are.

Not a huge day ahead of me now. I just want to finish what I started yesterday and do a little cleanup outside. I managed to move some of the pavers for the new temporary path from the driveway to my back porch yesterday after mowing the lawn, and I'd like to get the rest of that strip put in today before I shower up and go pick up a few scrips.

The old "walkway" I had out there in the sand pit was bullshit. It wasn't put in there as a walkway years ago. I put those pavers down right underneath where the water would fall off the roof and put a huge divot in the sand after constantly kicking it up everywhere. The need for this was eliminated years ago when I got my gutters installed. It was always way too close to the side of the garage to be a comfortable walkway and I've made people other than myself endure that every time they visit. Time to fix that.

40% chance of rain today turned into kind of a bust. I'm only seeing 7% chance every hour for the rest of the day and it doesn't look like it rained at all yet. Getting a really late start today, but shouldn't have any problems getting what I need to get done finished.

Got the walkway done with plenty of time to clean up and run errands.

It looks as good as it's ever going to look until I landscape everything back there. Stones are set deeper and everything is better graded where it needs to go for the time being.

It was really such a small thing that was just an annoyance for so long. Because I put those bricks down there to keep the water messing up everything below them when I didn't have gutters, it was just like 8" too close to the garage from where it needed to be. Not enough to keep anybody from walking on sand, but plenty enough to make people have to walk unnaturally for about 25 feet to keep out of it. And that's what every person who's ever come here has had to do at least twice.

Before today I'd never even finished taking out all of the pavers right at the end of the driveway there and it always looked like absolute garbage. Not that it looks great now with all the sand, but I removed that eyesore while I put a proper walkway all the way to that end of the driveway and through the sand pit where it needs to go.

Most days I look at all the work I put into this over 2 days as wasted time because it's eventually going to be removed again anyhow, but I'm glad I finally got the itch to just tackle it now.

I've always been somebody who can easily grow accustomed to inconveniences like that kitchen sink I finally got around to fixing, and this walkway to me was always just that.

How uninviting. My old man kind of kicked one of those over to the side at some point and he's apologizing to me for it when it's my fault.

Oh well... Treacherous no more.

It might be another year until I finally get around to doing this sand pit drainage project. I dunno yet. I was just done living like that in the meantime. I should have a good sit down with myself and figure out what other "minor" inconveniences I've let myself become accustomed to and have found reasons to not get around to fixing them right now.

I know this path sounds kind of dumb, and it is kind of dumb... But fixing that today was just one of those quality of life improvements that you can't believe you didn't get around to until just now. Almost on the level of having a fully functioning kitchen sink.

I probably have a dozen things I would only subconsciously recognize that annoy me about the way I have this place set up. I have to stop putting certain things off until I get to that as part of the bigger overall picture.

I'm like mad at myself right now for not having done this a long time ago. Such a stupid little thing and only about 8 hours of work, and it's all just one horrible eyesore and mood killer that's out of my life forever.

What the hell am I going to do with myself when I get rid of all the annoyances and there's no more work besides maintenance to take care of?

Right?

And when you get it done and realize just how little an inconvenience it was to deal with compared to the frustration you just inflicted upon yourself over time by not doing it, it just boggles the mind.

It's been almost 4 years now since I got those gutters put up. I remember because I could never get the guy back to make an adjustment and finally gave up when he used Covid as an excuse.

It's little shit like this I'm sure that keeps people from coming over to my place more often.

Let's see...

A short list of improvements I've made just in the last year that benefitted other people when they're here at least as much as they benefit me.

1. Finally replaced the door knob on the kitchen/porch door with a door handle. This door was installed incorrectly where something is wrong with it and almost everybody who's come here has slammed their fingers in it at least once. My one buddy did it damn near every time and didn't learn too. Like not a little slam either. Painful. Bullshit. That wasn't fixed for 12 years.

2. The kitchen sink. Affected my aunt more than anybody else when she comes here just because we get lunch a lot and she couldn't really make much use of the sink when the trickle on the hot water was so bad it took over 20 minutes to fill one basin. That situation had been getting progressively worse for 3 or 4 years until it was practically unusable.

3. This patio paver situation was awful. You either walked through sand right up to the door like you were walking through dunes on a beach, or you did a trapeze impersonation and practically had to shuffle sideways to get to my door without falling into the sand or getting your clothes dirty by rubbing up on the garage. I didn't deal with it much because my car was in the garage and there's a straight shot from the garage to the porch, but anybody else coming over had to do that crap. And it's not like I wasn't aware of it.

That's just the stuff that I can think of off the top of my head that had nothing really to do with any major projects and just needed a little bit of time.

I didn't do anything about that door until I finally restored the whole door, but the fact that I left that old door knob up there for 12 years when I know other people slammed their fingers in it and I knew how bad it hurt when that happened is just inexcusable.

I'm really like beating myself up over this dumb crap right now. I'm glad it's done now, but really this type of behavior is suitable for somebody who is subconsciously trying to make their place as unwelcoming as possible to keep people away. I'll admit, that probably is the case here, but I don't want to be that person anymore.

Anyway... what else is nice is that I was able to finagle the guys doing the sidewalks into cutting out my old curb and putting one in that is a smooth incline up my driveway instead of that crumbling old speed bump of a curb that everyone would bottom their vehicle out on the first few times they used it if it wasn't a pickup truck.

They weren't technically supposed to be doing that for anybody, but reaching out and building rapport with the right people can really have its benefits sometimes. Initially, the guy was going to get me in touch with somebody who would come buy and simply cut the top of the curb down, at a cost of around $700 to me, but I was able to somehow manage getting a brand new one put in.

I'll be honest... until I take care of that sandpit once and for all, this isn't going to be much of a welcoming site until you're in my house, but at least right now I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would be an actual deterrent keeping people from wanting to come back.

Nobody is forced to go upstairs to wash their hands, or slamming their fingers in janky sold core wooden doors or damaging the undercarriage of their cars when they come to see me anymore. Now they won't have to shake out their shoes when they go home like they were at the beach all day either.

Christ...

I'm serious. I need to sit down and just think on this and figure if there's anything else I need to do right now to eliminate deterrents or simply just upgrade an easily up-gradable quality of life improvement. I know there are others that I'm just not thinking about now but would probably crop up at some point when I realize I'm annoyed for no reason.

That's probably what I'll have to do. Get a list started and add to it whenever I realize I'm putting up with some bullshit I don't need to be putting up with anymore.

For a few people at a time. Probably seat 4 to 6 comfortably either in the house or in the porch. Got some captain's chairs and I kept 2 of the patio furniture chairs when I got rid of that set.

When I dehoarded I gave my brother a card table and chairs with it, and 2 extra folding chairs. He's also got my very, very nice poker table. They were basically a "they're all yours unless I ever want them back in the future" kind of deal. That was so long ago he might not even remember I gave the small table and chairs to him at this point. Almost feels wrong to even ask about it now. I need to get the poker table back for sure though.

I'm not looking to have any parties here. Poker night is cool, but otherwise I'd just like to have a hub that people can meet at before we do things like go the the local music fest.

Is your bathroom clean and in good repair?
Depends and kind of.

The shower is getting clogged up again. Clearing that out is basically a yearly routine for me these days. Everything else works fine. It ain't sparkling though.

What I'd like to do is install the pedestal sink my buddy gave me a few years back and put a few walls up and put tile up over that shower basin in the basement and get it to where I can take showers down there. That way I'd be able to clean the main bathroom spotless and I wouldn't get it dirty, outside of maybe needing to clean the sink and toilet every once in a while, and keep all that down in the basement. The only time I'd probably ever use the main bathroom at that point would be the winter when it was cold down there.

That's something I've been wanting to do for a while now. If I do the shower right, even though it will probably be years before I ever remodeled down there, I wouldn't have to redo it later unless a flood forces me to do that. That pedestal sink should be easy to install and take back down when I need to. There's already a working toilet in there.

This is probably going to be part of my winter projects this year. I'm already putting off certain things that can only be done during nice weather to do other things that can only be done during nice weather.

I'd noticed a few weeks ago that there was a big ole dirt mound around the power line pole at the corner of my house when I was mowing the lawn. My first thought was that a mole wreaked havoc over there, but then I went to mow the back yard where there are two more of them and I saw the same thing around them too.

Kind of annoying that the power company doesn't tell you that they're ripping out your grass to check on the state of the poles underneath the surface, especially considering how much spam email the power company likes sending over other bullshit, but no harm no foul.

I've been here 13 years now and this is the first time that's happened, so I'm going to guess that as long as they didn't find any problems it will be a long time before they do that again.

It was actually quite fortuitous that they chose now to do this since my current goal is to get as much landscaping done as possible this year to make mowing the lawn a much more streamlined and enjoyable experience.

My plan now is to clean up the cuts around the poles as round as possible, and then I'm going to cut out a few black plastic contractor trash bags to size for weed guard and dump a bag of river rock around them. One of the poles has two cables tied deep into the ground too, so I'll have to cut around them a bit to do the same, and I'll have to do the same thing around the street sign and stop sign. The fact that they tore out the ground around the poles for me is going to save me quite a bit of work here.

I'm not going to put any borders around them or anything like that. These are both easements that I don't even technically own, but I'm still responsible for maintaining. If they come back around unannounced one day in the future to check the poles again, they're just going to throw anything around the poles all over my yard, so why bother giving them the Better Homes and Gardens treatment?

It sounds like a lot of work for such little payoff, but its all the little BS like that which makes the time to cut an already obscenely large yard longer than it needs to be. Taking time to do those little 360 degree turns around these things and trying to get as much of the grass under the blade as possible only to realize that you're never going to clean it up right without a weed wacker or a pair of scissors is really annoying. Hopefully last time I mowed the lawn will be the last time I had to do that.

That's my goal today. Nothing huge.

Last day in a 3 day string of high 80 degrees. I didn't even bother opening up my windows the last two nights because it didn't get low enough to justify letting all that humidity in.

Thermostat is reading 78 degrees right now on the 2nd floor.

(I just checked the weather, and it's quite a bit cooler for the high than it was supposed to be at only 81 degrees).

Currently, it's 3 degrees cooler outside than it is inside my house, but since I have that dehumidifier in the basement it doesn't feel as warm inside as it does outside. Tonight dips down to 61 with a high of only 75 tomorrow, so I'll probably open my windows tonight around 9PM and they'll probably stay open 24/7 for the next week barring any rain.

78 is still a comfortable temperature for me inside a house with low humidity, so it hasn't been bad. But I can tell a few more days of this would have not been pleasant.

Going to get that A/C put up by the weekend and get the broken one out of there.

Yeah. They've got quite an easement too. I actually know all about it because of all that work I did fighting my property taxes.

I'm glad they can do whatever the hell they want to on that land whenever the hell they want to without letting the homeowner know they're doing it. Meanwhile, if I stop mowing it for them it's going to be the city that's on my ass.

It looked like absolute dogshit, and if I wasn't planning on fixing it myself and didn't view this as an opportunity to do something I'd been wanting to do for years, now that somebody did 80% of the work for me, I'd have been calling up the city about it.

Anyhow, it took longer than I thought it would, but I got all that done. Even took the time to cut away a few other things and load them up with river rock. I figured I'd spend a bag or two doing this, but I went through damn near 5 bags today.

Looks great now though. If it holds up, should make mowing that much less of a chore going forward.

Nice!

Yeah... I opened up my windows earlier than I thought I would. I'd finished around 6PM and when I went inside it was hotter inside my house than it was outside. Should be really nice for the next week or so after it cools back down tonight.

Better get that A/C in there before the next heat wave hits.

BRENDA

Got back a bit after 5pm today and I won the first round. Had a hand with 7 doubles in it. Winds & dragons along with my 2 flowers. I was sooo close to having all 8 flowers in one hand but the other ladies I was playing with got the other 2.

Regular game tomorrow morning then something to return to the library.

Also dry for the next few days which is okay as the rain we have had has helped save the snow pack and gotten into the ground.

Congrats on the win, Brenda.

I don't know what 8 flowers means, and trying to look it up online didn't clear it up for me either...

I had no idea how complicated a game Mahjong is until just now. How long do you think it too you to learn it? Do you still feel like you're learning or improving the more you play?

Thanks.

There are 2 sets of flowers and each set has 4. One is colour red and the other is coloured blue. So, I had 2,3,4 of each set. Winds are sets of 4 as well. You start playing with East then when everyone has played with that you move to South, then West and finally North.

The other tiles are characters, circles and bamboo which start at 1 and go to 9. There are 4 of all of these tiles. So, you have a set of 4 for 1 circles and for 1 bamboos and for 1 characters on the down the line to 9 in each set of tiles.

Well, I came into the game with a bit of an advantage as I had discovered the game on line and started playing. So, I knew what the tiles looked like. The difference is that on line you can play 2 ways, like we play in my group or just matching two or three tiles and the computer does all the work. I guess to learn to count took me about a month and even after all this time I can still have problems counting.

Though, I am now good enough that the head lady will let me teach if I am playing at a table on Thursday with someone who is still a little unsure of their counting.
