NY Times Editorial Board Urges Biden To Quit Race - Did Trump Administer Premature Kill Shot?

Saturday, Jun 29, 2024 - 06:55 AM

Thursday night's presidential debate mortally wounded President Biden's political career, and now the New York Times has hammered a significant nail in the coffin -- publishing an editorial bluntly declaring that "the greatest public service Mr. Biden can now perform is to announce that he will not continue to run for re-election."

With this development, Biden's departure from November ballots is taking on an air of inevitability. At the same time, Team Trump is reckoning with what may have been a strategic error -- enabling a premature kill shot that could leave Trump facing a worse matchup.

Americans Dread Vote Between Two Unpopular Candidates
Additionally, as Statista's Felix Richter notes, the debate was also unique in that it featured two candidates that are viewed as unfit for the job by large parts of the American public, albeit for very different reasons. While President Biden is widely viewed as too old for a second term (and apparently proved that view correct last night), former President Trump is the first convicted felon to run for the country’s highest office.

As a result of this unusual match-up, many voters feel like they’re caught between a rock and a hard place, as they have serious reservations about both candidates.

According to a recent poll by The Economist and YouGov, Biden and Trump are seen unfavorably by almost 60 percent of Americans, with a shocking 44 and 47 percent holding very unfavorable views of the incumbent and his challenger, respectively.

Of course, those numbers are largely driven by the extreme polarization of today’s political landscape, resulting in 92 percent of likely Democratic voters seeing Trump unfavorably and 94 percent of likely Republican voters holding a negative view of Biden, but there are reservations about their own candidate on both sides of the political spectrum as well...

"Independents", who are in reality undecideds, dread voting the most.

When people are in that highly charged emotional state, they make highly emotional decisions, usually to relieve their amped up anxiety.

If Biden bails and the DNC springs a new candidate into place, that candidate - whoever he or she is- will provide a relief valve for all of that FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) and those emotional undecideds will squirt is that direction, making an emotional decision simply to relieve extreme anxiety.

The Trump campaign will have to relieve that anxiety by making him seem a focused, honest, and stable candidate, and Trump ... is not the guy to do that. He plays to his audience, or who he THINKS is his audience, and blurts out ridiculous promises. But by hook or crook, he needs to woo those undecideds.

His campaign will also have to create a lot of FUD around whoever is the chosen replacement, whether its Kamala or Newsom or Whitmer, or someone else.

EDITED TO ADD: But maybe this belongs in the ELECTIONS 2024 thread, so I'll copy this there.

Yes. There's video footage of it, shot by her own daughter for a documentary.

Why her daughter didn't bury that is the real question. Maybe she hates her mother?

Apparently the Legacy Media has been as successful at hiding that from you as well as they've hidden the fact that Joe Biden* can't even speak in public.

Here it is, since you've never seen it...

I have always known why the lives of Trump and his Trumptards go so very wrong. They misunderstand reality because they are crazy. Maybe Nancy Pelosi should have brought a 45 caliber to the Capitol and directed a counter-attack by the Capitol security as they kill every Trumptard until they either run out of ammo or Trumptards.

None of that addresses the lie that you "just found out Trump was crazy" at the debate. You say that 5 times per week.

What Nancy Pelosi should have done is accepted the additional security staff she was offered from Trump's administration. She refused it, as did the mayor of D.C. She knew what a mistake she made and how bad those optics were going to look as her driver sped away with her and her daughter in the back seat. She was practically incoherent, sounding very much like Joe Biden* on a debate night in that video. It wasn't until she got back to her office and calmed her nerves with half a bottle of whiskey that she got on the phone with the Lefty Legacy Media outfits to cook up a story where she wasn't the villain.

I guess burying that tape slipped her mind. Why on earth did her daughter not take that upon herself to bury it? Probably because she hates her mother.

And why are you always talking about killing Trump and Trump voters?

It would appear that any solution you come up with for Democrat's current problems is 10,000 times worse than any claims you or the Lefty Media make about Trump.

You come off as the only crazy one in the room.

That debate really ripped the hinges right off the top of your head, didn't it?

You're going full-blown Reaverfan now. Why don't you just drop the Second handle and stop pretending that you're not Reaverfan. You're not fooling anyone. You've never fooled anyone.

Joe looks like an angry old fool up there. Stuttering. Not finishing sentences. Staring all over the place like he's lost most of the time while Trump's talking. Bringing up lies that even Leftwing Media has already agreed was bullshit.

Meanwhile, Trump has been calm, cool and collected. Just mostly sitting back and letting Joe* make a fool of himself.

Joe* has never looked as weak as he does right now, and that's because he barely ever talks in public and the very few occasions that he does he's treated with kid gloves.

Not tonight.

My advice to Biden: purchase tinted eyeglasses and stop squinting like a vain old fool. Take a nap before the next debate or else you're going to get your tired old ass beaten.

Say it ain't so, Kevin.

What did I tell you? Now the world got to see what a bumbling, old, braindead asshole Joe Biden* is.

This is nothing new. This has been going on for 3.5 years. You've just been ignoring it.

But it was so impossible to sweep this one under the rug that CNN and even Kevin Freakin' Drum had to tell the truth about it.

And Joe* slept all day. He didn't need another nap before the debate, Kevin. They've been pumping him full of drugs for so long now before any public appearances that he's in la-la land half the time even with a triple dose on an important night like tonight.

Never in a million years did anybody in Camp Biden* think that Trump was going to immediately agree to a debate at CNN with Tapper as one of the moderators with no audience and a bunch of new rules.

That was a grave miscalculation on Camp Biden*'s part, made even worse for him by the inexplicable decision of CNN to keep their moderators from ganging up on Trump. This was probably the first fair General Election debate that Trump took part in during 3 election cycles.

Trump called the bluff and any aspirations that Joe* had of a 2nd term just went up in flames.

I can't wait to see where the polling aggregates at RCP and 538 are in two weeks.

They have no choice but to retire Joe* now. So who's it going to be vs. Trump in November?

Why I Hate Presidential Debates

by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

https://angrybearblog.com/2024/06/understanding-the-responsibilities-o
f-democracy

A presidential debate can gather 80 million or more watchers. That is sad news. Nothing of substance ever happens during a debate. Candidates bluster, insult, throw around dubious statistics, virtue signal, and even outright lie. But nothing new is learned at a debate that should influence a voter one way or the other. The important information is already out there: what have they done, what plans have they made to solve our problems and what do the experts say about the viability of those plans? Both men have been president and their records are all the evidence required. Anyone who makes up their mind about a candidate based on debates is the worst kind of voter: delusional that they have some special power to see into a person’s heart just by watching them on a stage. It’s lazy, insulting to democracy, and detrimental to the country.

In general, those who support a candidate always believe their candidate “won” the debate. But it doesn’t matter either way. The person who wins the debate isn’t necessarily a better candidate for president, they’re just better at debates, which is not a skill necessary to be a good president. It reminds me of Black Panther when M’Baku challenges T’Challa to be the leader of their country. What people would choose their leader based on hand-to-hand combat, the most useless skill for a modern leader? Fun in a movie, but dumb in real life.

What does it say about us as a society that we insist on this form of ritualized verbal combat that is nothing more than strutting and fretting their hour on the stage filled with sound and fury—signifying nothing?

If you watched just for the entertainment value of two codgers arguing in Real Housewives style, then that’s legit. Grab the popcorn and enjoy. If you’re watching to help make up your mind about which candidate to support, you don’t understand the responsibilities of democracy.

I won't deny that. My standard is a VERY low bar.

Usually when Trump is at a debate he's forced to argue against the moderators even more than the person who he is debating.

Of course they did some things here and there, but at least they shut the fuck up this time and didn't start arguing with Trump every time he opened his mouth.

In 3 election cycles now, that's the first debate where they didn't do this.

And because Trump played the whole thing expertly, the moderators were (mostly) helpless to just sit back in horror while Joe* made it very clear to the entire world audience that the "most powerful man in the world" is nothing but a brain-dead prop. A shell of what was once a man.

It was beautiful.

But in this case that would just be foolish anyhow. This isn't an inexpensive process. And let's be honest here... The way Joe Biden* looks right now, I don't think anybody is confident he even makes it to January 20th of next year.

If they already printed Joe Biden* ballots, they've got a lot of paper to shred and burn before they do it all over again with somebody else's name.

In 2016, some said it didn't matter who won the race between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Now in 2024, we've lost the right to abortion, affirmative action, LGBTQ rights, and student loan debt relief because of judges appointed by Trump. Don't listen to those people or 6ix ever again. Elections have consequences.

Nobody said it didn't matter who won between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Not one single person said that. Up until its time, it was the most toxic election cycle that ever took place.

There have been no LGBT "rights" lost. We just didn't have a big fucking month long "party" where straight people were shamed and corporations changed their logos to the pride flag (only in America and Europe, btw... certainly not in the Middle East or China). Name one right they lost.

Women still have access to abortion. Even in hard republican states they've been voting for abortion down ticket.

Affirmative action is trash. They hire trash and pass up qualified people because of it. Any person who legitimately got their job or their spot at a college is now questioned by everybody, including peers of their own demographic groups.

Student Debt relief is completely unconstitutional. Nancy Pelosi said so right after Biden* was elected. The only reason Biden* kept pushing for it, knowing that it was never going to see the light of day, was so they could push this bullshit narrative now. Student Debt relief via government handouts is NEVER going to happen.

Biden was confronting a non-stop liar:

The Gish Gallop Tactic Used by Trump

Angry Bear | June 30, 2024 2:43 pm

The Gish Gallop is named after the creationist Duane Gish who hurls many half-truths and no-truths in a very short space of time so that his opponent cannot hope to combat each point in real time.

Trump refused to say what he was doing on Jan 6. He changed the subject when asked if he would honor the election, then when asked again, he waffled and said if it was fair. He didn’t answer about Ukraine. He gave a new answer to about supporting a nationwide abortion ban. All he did was lie. That is how that debate really should be judged. Even if Biden hadn’t had a cold, he would have almost certainly fared badly in that barrage of lies, but it’s about the lies.

At least with all of Trump’s lies, he sort of showed it as a battle between good and evil. The details don’t matter.

More at https://angrybearblog.com/2024/06/the-gish-gallop-tactic-used-by-trump

The article mentioned how to combat a liar like Trump but an effective real world technique is to punch the liar in the face rather than continue to battle with words.

Thirteen lies

June 30, 2024 – 1:59 pm

During Thursday's debate, Donald Trump flitted from subject to subject, but his primary sin was his ceaseless stream of lies. Here are a baker's dozen of them.

https://jabberwocking.com/thirteen-lies/

1. Tariffs:

Not going to drive [prices] higher. It’s just going to cause countries that have been ripping us off for years, like China and many others, in all fairness to China — it’s going to just force them to pay us a lot of money, reduce our deficit tremendously, and give us a lot of power for other things.

Flat out lie. Tariffs are paid by the importer, who then has to pass along the cost increase to its customers.

2. Social Security:

This man is going to single-handedly destroy Social Security. These millions and millions of people coming in, they’re trying to put them on Social Security. He will wipe out Social Security. He will wipe out Medicare.

Illegal immigrants aren't eligible for Social Security. In fact, they help Social Security because they pay taxes but never get any of the benefits.

3. Abortion:

If you look at this whole question that you’re asking, a complex, but not really complex — 51 years ago, you had Roe v. Wade, and everybody wanted to get it back to the states, everybody, without exception. Democrats, Republicans, liberals, conservatives, everybody wanted it back. Religious leaders.

Flat out lie. It's simply untrue that "everybody" wanted to overturn Roe. v. Wade.

4. Abortion again:

If you look at the former governor of Virginia, he was willing to do this. He said, we’ll put the baby aside and we’ll determine what we do with the baby. Meaning, we’ll kill the baby.

Former Gov. Ralph Northram never said this, no matter how many times Trump claims it.

5. Illegal immigration:

He decided to open up our border, open up our country to people that are from prisons, people that are from mental institutions, insane asylum, terrorists. We have the largest number of terrorists coming into our country right now. All terrorists, all over the world — not just in South America, all over the world. They come from the Middle East, everywhere. All over the world, they’re pouring in.

There is no evidence that terrorists have crossed into the US via the southwestern border.

6. Foreign affairs:

As far as Russia and Ukraine, if we had a real president, a president that knew — that was respected by Putin, he would have never — he would have never invaded Ukraine.... Just like Israel would have never been invaded, in a million years, by Hamas. You know why? Because Iran was broke with me. I wouldn’t let anybody do business with them. They ran out of money. They were broke. They had no money for Hamas. They had no money for anything. No money for terror.

This is ridiculous. Trump did nothing to deter Putin and nothing to deter Iran.

7. January 6:

Nancy Pelosi, if you just watch the news from two days ago, on tape to her daughter, who’s a documentary filmmaker, as they say, what she’s saying, oh, no, it’s my responsibility, I was responsible for this. Because I offered her 10,000 soldiers or National Guard, and she turned them down. And the mayor of — in writing, by the way, the mayor. In writing turned it down, the mayor of D.C. They turned it down.

Flat out lie. Trump didn't offer 10,000 National Guard troops to anyone on January 6.

8. January 6 again:

The unselect committee, which is basically two horrible Republicans that are all gone now, out of office, and Democrats, all Democrats, they destroyed and deleted all of the information they found, because they found out we were right. We were right. And they deleted and destroyed all of the information.

Flat out lie. The January 6 committee didn't destroy anything.

9. Ukraine:

Joe could be a convicted felon with all of the things that he’s done. He’s done horrible things. All of the death caused at the border, telling the Ukrainian people that we’re going to want a billion dollars or you change the prosecutor, otherwise, you’re not getting a billion dollars.

If I ever said that, that’s quid pro quo. That — we’re not going to do anything, we’re not going to give you a billion dollars unless you change your prosecutor having to do with his son.

Flat out lie. The US wanted Ukraine's top prosecutor fired because he was corrupt. It had nothing to do with Hunter Biden, and in any case, Joe Biden was just the messenger for US policy.

10. Inflation:

He caused the inflation. He’s blaming inflation. And he’s right, it’s been very bad. He caused the inflation and it’s killing black families and Hispanic families and just about everybody. It’s killing people. They can’t buy groceries anymore. They can’t. You look at the cost of food where it’s doubled and tripled and quadrupled. They can’t live. They’re not living anymore. He caused this inflation.

Our recent surge in inflation was caused primarily by COVID shortages. Beyond that, it was most likely caused by rescue packages passed under Trump, which were much bigger than Biden's. And food prices haven't doubled or quadrupled; they've gone up about 20%.

11. Criminal justice:

What he has done to the black population is horrible, including the fact that for 10 years he called them superpredators. We can’t, in the 1990s, we can’t forget that. Super predators was his name. And he called it to them for 10, and they’ve taken great offense at it, and now they see it happening.

Flat out lie. Biden never uttered the word superpredator.

12. The environment:

During my four years, I had the best environmental numbers ever. And my top environmental people gave me that statistic just before I walked on the stage, actually.

Trump was a disaster for the environment. Carbon emissions stopped going down under Trump until 2020, when they dropped solely due to COVID.

13. Fentanyl:

Jake, we’re doing very well at addiction until the COVID came along. We had the two-and-a-half, almost three years of like nobody’s ever had before, any country in every way. And then we had to get tough. And it was — the drugs pouring across the border, we’re — it started to increase.

Fentanyl deaths increased from 70,000 to 107,000 over Trump's term. Cocaine overdose deaths also skyrocketed.

Trump deserves to be punched in the face for every lie he told, but none will do it. Without those earned punches, inevitably he will continue to lie.

I never once said anything remotely close to this.

And as I've explained before, my Jack handle dates back to 2006 and the Joker handle was around for maybe a month at one point because I had gotten warnings in firefox that logging into this site wasn't secure, so I used a burner email but kept my name similar enough where nobody here would claim I was sockpuppeting myself.

"Jack" was never my real name or the reason for my handle. I played a lot of guitar back when I first joined this site, and I'd just recently watched Six String Samurai before making that name, and I also played a ton of Texas Hold 'Em in those days. I'm pretty sure that on a subconscious level that the cartoon Samurai Jack which my brothers were both very fond of mixed with Six String Samurai and lead to the Jack name too. Changing the name briefly to 6ixStringJoker was about cards and had nothing to do with the Joker movie or any Batman property.

I could have just changed it to 6ixStringKing. It would have been more apropos since I rule you.

Won't even bother to debunk the rest of your lies on this list because you continue to lie about what I've said about Joker, just like you lie every time you hit the Save Response button here.

I can't argue any of that.

I've become so jaded that I didn't believe that Hollywood was even capable of putting a film like this out anymore. Not only was it the best comic book movie that likely will ever exist, but if one was being honest with themselves they'd be hard pressed to find another movie of any genre that was better than Joker.

Maybe I'm just still "high" off of it, and it wasn't as good as it "felt"? This is a possibility. Watching it was grueling. My first words to my old man when it finally ended were "I'm exhausted". I felt like I had just come out of the gym after a great workout... and I think my entire body had been tensed up for so long that this wasn't all that far from the truth. Sitting through it was the definition of uncomfortable. Yet at the same time, it was the least violent Batman universe flick ever made. There might have been less gore in other Batman movies, but the death count was extremely low by comparison. But they were powerful... probably because of that fact.

Maybe Phoenix's performance deserves all of the credit? It is the single most amazing acting performance I've ever seen in my life, and there is no second place that is even remotely close. I said in another thread that I hope he's seeking out the psychiatric help to remove himself from the character of Arthur Fleck after what happened to Heath Ledger. I don't see how it would be possible to put on a performance like that and not have that be a part of you long afterward.

If it were a lesser film, I would say that my favorite thing about the movie was the laughing at the SJW critic idiots that hadn't even seen it freaking out about it and calling it right wing propaganda designed for incels... or laughing even harder at those who had seen it and said "the critics that give it a fresh rating will have blood on their hands".

But no... That wasn't my favorite thing at all. The movie was just so good that I didn't even give that a thought until well after a day later.

All of that being said, I am finding it quite hard to recommend it to anybody. I mean, I have and will continue to do so... but I warn them that it is not a feel good movie and they might not enjoy the experience. But if you're up for it, it's one hell of a ride.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

P.S. from second: I have always believed that to make the comic book world a better place, Joker deserves to die in agony, but then the Nazis I know living in America and voting for Trump deserve the same to Make America Great Again. I will be unconvinced even if the Nazis insist with their dying screams that they are not Nazis and not Racists.

It is not my problem that you are mentally retarded and you still can't comprehend anything that I said all these years later, despite your apparently never-ending obsession with my words.

I'm not going to argue any of my thoughts or what I said with you. You've just dug my words up from last decade and re-posted them.

Read it again. And if you haven't figured it out you can just keep reading it over and over again until you do.

God you are such a fucking creep.

I just imagine you watching Joker for the 250th time in a dark room, years after I've forgotten almost everything about it, obsessing over me and things I said 5 years ago. The icon I use, which you know is a picture of me because there is not a single post I've ever written that you haven't read at least twice, blown up to 8"x10" and framed above your television. This effigy, symbolic of every Texas Trumptard you've ever met in your life that chokes you every day by simply breathing the same air that you do. You can't help but clutch your fists into balls so tight you break the skin every time you look up and see me pointing.

This is your shrine to your hatred for me where you religiously watch Joker every Sunday and channel all of your attention and toxic energy directly at me for a few hours. And over time, this ritual has become your only release valve. Nothing else will do, and no matter how hard you've tried to deny it to yourself, you know that you will be completely dysfunctional until you watch Joker again in that room.

It's good for you that you've found a way to give yourself a much needed break from obsessing over Donald Trump 24/7, even if only for a few hours once a week until next Jokerday comes.

You're welcome, buddy.

6ix, you are enthralled by Trump and Joker. A steady stream of lies and murders from either doesn't repulse Nazis.
Joaquin Phoenix will eventually play Trump in a biopic that wins you over.

6ixStringJack is not alone. Other Nazis and Trumptards loved Joker and his excuse that he can’t be blamed. Blame his environment for making him a powerful criminal. Actual Trumptards shift blame all the time.

I'm glad you went to see it. There's so much to say about this film, but I think you touched upon a handful of key elements regarding this film. It is, above all else, an experience. I too had that "feeling" at the end, the one where you just can't quite leave without having someone to talk to and say...
"Wow! what did you think?" You had your dad, so I hope you were able to discuss it.

Here it is 3 days later and I'm still feeling that "high" - it is the emotion of what I identified with in the film. It was how Arthur felt. We, the audience, could identify with it because, at some point, we felt as he did.
But, there's a twist, because Arthur had brain damage and took things further
once he was "pushed" over the edge.

I agree that the commentary never got in the way and spoil the film; and there was social commentary. Much like a good sci-fi film that slips in a sort of lesson about life on earth. The good ones slide that in, the great ones never let you see the man behind the curtain. That's why I say it was NOT preachy in any way. That's the task of a good writer, to tell a story that has meaning.

But I agree, this film is far too great to lessen it by talking about politics. To put it bluntly, this was a fucking great film. And yes, I put it in my Top Ten All Time. I will see it again, maybe next week, it's that great.

NO SPOILERS

Joker is a brilliant masterpiece of film, a masterstroke in storytelling and screenwriting.
Todd Phillips and Scott Silver depicted a story of squalor and despair that was the Joker’s life.
They peel back the layers of how exactly to build a Joker and construct just how a psychopath Gets born.

Gotham is not a very pleasant place, the streets are philthy, jobs are scarce and hope is something people just talk about. Arthur Fleck is just your average joe who lives with his mom, working to make ends meet, but he has an illness…..that is the premise of the Joker. A man who is just on this side of sanity and walks the tightrope of life, one slip, one step away from madness…...and we get to watch.

It is social commentary, a cautionary tale. Phillips/Silver slowly reveal just what it takes to push a madman close to the edge (and then over it). Their writing is superb, but they don’t tell you in so many words...they show you. It is the way a writer is supposed to write a type of mystery that we all
Know so well. Or, at least, that we think we know. They show us the way, but it’s creepy because it is very close to the real thing. We all know where the rabbit hole leads to because we are just on this side of the real-life version. If Joker were a painting, it would be a Picasso during his Cubist period. Distorted but familiar. Sad but you can’t look away; much like a car accident - we just have to see: did anyone get hurt. This is how Joker lives, on the ugly side of life. But it’s fascinating. It is so well written, not a wasted word or a wasted scene. And, above all, NO preachy dialogue.

It’s as though our writers held up a mirror and said “here ya go!” I really can’t put it in words. I cannot do it justice, because I’m making it sound melodramatic. It really is NOT that. Some may decide not to go see it. I could understand that, but if you’re an amateur movie buff, or just plain love the movies and what it could ideally be, you owe it to yourself to go see this deeply satisfying piece of art. Where would we be without Picasso, Rembrandt and Kubrick and Shakespeare.

Joaquin Phoenix is an acting genius, a savant in this film. He took Phillips words and breathed life into the Joker like no other before him. Both he and Phillips went down a completely different path than previous iterations of this character. Joaquin took the Picasso and set it in motion, each movement, each word brought new meaning to the character. We as the audience wanted to know more, and with each scene, with each movement and word we were rewarded. The writing and the performance by Joaquin waltzed together in perfect maddening harmony. The pacing in this two hour movie, it was as though they came into the theater and brought us to our seats, put our feet up and said: “No hurry, get comfortable, you’ll see, it will all pay off.” But it’s not so much the destination, as it is the journey. The music/soundtrack too, reminded me of Kubrick/Tarantino. Each piece, each entry, each selection carefully chosen and perfectly matched. Yes, I dare say that Heath Ledger would applaud Joaquin’s efforts. Both he and Phillips took Joker down a whole new path. Kubrick and Quentin would smile appreciatively.

It left me inspired and hopeful that the end 2019, at least film-wise, looks to be salvageable.

Second has gone on record now claiming that ShinyGoodGuy is a Evil Trumptard Nazi, all in a vain attempt to beat a horse he'd already pounded into paste 5 years ago.

SGG's post history speaks for itself, just as all of ours does. But if anybody would like to chime in and come to SGG's defense on this issue, now would be the time to do it.

Honor demands Joe Biden step aside
Democrats need an effective nominee, this isn't it

By Matthew Yglesias | Jun 28, 2024

https://www.slowboring.com/p/honor-demands-joe-biden-step-aside

I’ve long thought that concerns about Joe Biden’s age were overstated as a source of his political problems.

He didn’t really poll worse than other Democrats in head-to-head matchups against Trump, his vice president and most likely replacement was less popular than him, and his struggles seemed to me to be roughly in line with the political struggles of essentially every developed country incumbent. Indeed, I’ve long been struck by the fact that despite various economic troubles, the American economy is the strongest in the world and Biden is more popular than his peer leaders in other major countries.

What I did give some credence to was that Biden’s age was hurting his ability to perform the role of presidential candidate.

The most boring version of this is that he has a stiff old man gait, so he walks in a kind of shuffling manner. Hip flexibility and leg mobility are not important parts of doing the job of president, though. FDR, one of America’s best presidents, couldn’t walk at all. But politically speaking, people seem to care a lot about the president being able to walk confidently. FDR and his team, after all, hid his paralysis from the country.
(Woodrow Wilson and James Garfield collapsed while President.
Both administrations behaved atrociously to the end.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodrow_Wilson#Health_collapses
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_A._Garfield#Treatment_and_death )

Biden was doing less media than you’d expect from a president, and that was hurting his ability to get his message out. There were a number of possible interpretations of that, and my preferred interpretation was that it reflected an excessive level of gaffe-aversion among his communications staff — a team that frankly did not always seem aligned with the president ideologically. I thought they were worried that Biden would go off-script and say something accidentally moderate, like when he told the crowd at a fundraiser that he’s not a fan of abortion on demand. But I thought these fears were misguided and that a “let Biden be Biden” approach would be better.

The campaign, though, did not take my advice and sold the world on the debate as Biden’s big chance to do what he did at the State of the Union and show us just how good he can be as a speaker.

But while the State of Union did Biden a lot of good, it wasn’t an all-time great speech or anything. He delivered replacement level oratory, and simply accomplishing that improved the vibes and helped his chances. It was a clear sign that he was up to the job, but also that the bar for “this person would be a better nominee” was ultimate not that high. Now, after a debate performance that I and everyone else felt was below replacement level, I think it’s worth reminding ourselves that he didn’t even need to deliver a great performance to help himself.

There are naturally a lot of I-told-you-sos today from the people who’ve been slagging Biden on age grounds for a long time. I think it was correct to withhold judgment until we saw the debate. First and foremost because in the real world, if the nominee is not the president, it is overwhelmingly likely to be the vice president. It’s fun and interesting to speculate about various mechanisms to select someone else and it certainly could happen, but I think a political scheme that counts on Gretchen Whitmer walking through the door is a very unsound gamble. You shouldn’t try to shove the president out of the way unless you’re prepared to say the vice president would be better.

After watching the debate, I think it’s clear that Harris would be better.

Will she rise to the occasion and become a great politician? I hope so. But I wouldn’t count on it. Would she deliver replacement-level performance? I’m quite sure she would. She wouldn’t say “we finally beat Medicare” when she meant “we finally beat the prescription drug companies and let Medicare bargain for lower prices.” She wouldn’t let her opponent repeatedly — and falsely — claim that immigrants are undermining Social Security’s finances when the exact opposite is true. She wouldn’t discuss crime while forgetting to mention that the murder rate is lower now than it was when Trump left office.

I have a lot of ideas about how Harris could be a better politician and a lot of opinions about which politicians would be better than Harris. But she’s a replacement-level Democrat, and at this point, Biden is clearly below that. I don’t think “he has trouble controlling his stutter” actually warrants the strong inferences that his enemies are drawing about his mental acuity or his ability to make decisions. But “speaking under pressure without stuttering” is a bona fide occupational qualification for the job of major party presidential candidate. You don’t need to make this into more than it is for it to be a crippling problem. It’s hard to win a presidential campaign if you can’t go on television and deliver your message effectively, and it’s hard to deliver your message effectively when you look and sound like Biden does right now.

In her prescient and correct 2020 primary season article “The Case for Joe Biden,” Laura McGann made the point that in the 2018 cycle Biden was the most in-demand campaign surrogate for frontline Democrats. He was also, not coincidentally, the guy with the most endorsements from frontline members in the 2020 cycle. But if Biden were not currently president, he’s not someone candidates would want to use as a campaign surrogate. He’s not a good spokesperson. And the Democratic Party needs an effective spokesperson to make the case against Trump.

By the polling, I think the best options are Whitmer or Pete Buttigieg, but you could make the case for someone more obscure like Josh Shapiro or someone even more moderate like Andy Beshear.

But the point is, Harris would be fine, if that’s how it shakes out. Biden should say that with the future of the country on the line, he owes it to America to let the Democratic Party put forward a nominee who is full-time on the job of making the case against Trump, while he stays full-time on the job of dealing with the wars in Ukraine and Israel. He should pardon his son, who is being perversely treated much more harshly than a typical criminal defendant to make a point. And he should retire next year with a proud legacy and spend time with his family.

I think these notions of a committee of Democratic Party elders making this point to the president are a little bit fantastical. People want the party system to work in a way that it doesn’t work. But his family members probably have some influence on his thinking. And I think a tougher issue is that frontline members — the members whose careers he saved by being the nominee in 2020 — are going to have to spend all summer and fall answering questions about his fitness. They will probably end up needing to throw him under the bus, and if they’re smart, they’ll probably do it sooner rather than later.

Biden has a lot to be proud of in his presidency. He also has a right to feel a personal sense of both pride and resentment about having been kind of cast aside in 2016 in favor of Hillary Clinton, and having been passed over by most of the top operatives and donors in 2020. He would have been a much better choice in 2016, and in retrospect, he was the right choice in 2020. If I were Joe Biden, I would not want to listen to pundits saying, “Okay, but this time we really should go in a different direction than Biden.” And I especially would not want to listen to it from people who are deeply ideologically hostile to my style of politics.

That’s why I’m saying it, because I am not hostile to Biden’s style of politics, and I spent a long time dreading the prospect that he would stand down and re-open a 2020-style policy bidding war. But the fact is, running for president is a very difficult job, especially when you also doing the job of being the president. Biden is, at this point, not a good choice for the job.

I heard an interesting take (Alex Christforou) on why Biden will remain the candidate: campaign contributions.

Apparently, Biden has all of the campaign contributions (bc, of course, he "won" the primary) and the Biden campaign can't just give that $$ to the next guy/ gal. If Biden drops out, or is selected out, they have to give the $$ back to the donors. The mechanics of returning the $$ and getting it donated again to the next candidate are formidable.

So even if the DNC manages a surpise substitution at the convention, or Biden withdraws afetrwards*, that candidate wouldn't have a "war chest" to fund their campaign.

* How that would work

******

That accounts for opinion pieces saying that Biden is better than Trump, despite one bad performance. DNC aparatchiks will attempt to gaslight the entire American people.

I don't think that's going to fly.

Of course, smears against Trump will fill the bandwidth, especially now that the lawfare campaign ran into a brick wall.

Like the neocons who believe their own propaganda about Ukraine, Dem apparatchiks apparently believed that with a combination of the right meds and sufficient media spin, they could squeeze a few final performances from Biden and then prop him up in the Oval Office while others ran the show. (Yanno, like the past couple of years already.)

By putting all of their eggs into the fragile Biden basket, and not leaving a "Plan B", they're now in a no-win situation.

I'd hate to be DNC's chair, Jaime Harrison, right now.

But then, there's this ...

Quote:

Kamala's Ace In The Hole? $91 Million Biden-Harris Campaign Fund Looms Large
As the Biden presidency teeters in the wake of last week's disastrous debate performance that left no doubt about his sharp mental decline, discussion of Vice President Kamala Harris's prospects for becoming the party's new 2024 standard-bearer tend to focus on her (lack of) electability and Democrats' reluctance to pass over a black woman who holds the title that makes her a natural successor.

Little attention has been paid to what might be Kamala's greatest asset: her name on the $91.2 million Biden-Harris campaign account. Per federal election rules, in the event Biden drops out, that account can't simply be handed over to whomever the party eventually nominates for president -- unless it's Harris.

According to NBC News, the question of what would happen to the Biden-Harris war chest surfaced on a tense Sunday conference call hosted by the Biden campaign with an audience that included some 40 top Biden donors. While denying Biden might drop out, campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez's answer was that most of the money would fall into Harris's control.

But there's a catch: Many campaign finance experts say that's only true if Harris becomes the Democratic presidential nominee. “Both candidates are on the account,” former Federal Election Commission (FEC) associate general counsel Kenneth Gross told NBC News. “And I would think that she would be able to use the money if she is running for president. She would be the only one that could do that.”

Campaign Legal Center senior legal counsel Shanna Ports concurs, telling the Wall Street Journal that, if Harris is atop the ticket, “she would maintain access to all the funds in the committee and could use them to advance her presidential candidacy."

Critically, the Campaign Legal Center told NBC News that if Harris were merely the VP nominee paired with a new headliner, she wouldn't be able to tap the funds, as the new ticket would be considered an entirely different campaign organization. Political law attorney Claire Rajan said that was likely the correct interpretation of FEC law. Gross was unsure, and said interested parties would be wise to seek the FEC's opinion. Until that particular question is decisively answered, the lingering uncertainty is itself another plus for Harris.

OTOH, Joe* spent a billion dollarsin 2020. That's $1,000 million. $91 million is less than 10% of the Biden campaign's 2020 expenditures.

Politico: ‘We’ve all enabled the situation’: Dems turn on Biden’s inner sanctum post debate

The senior team’s management of Biden has grown more strictly controlled as his term has gone on.

Yeah. No shit.

Why are all of you chronically lying motherfuckers all telling the truth about this situation all of the sudden?

Now you've actually got me feeling kind of bad for Joe*. You people put him into this position when he was clearly unfit and incapable of handling it, lying to anybody who would listen to you everything to the contrary FOR YEARS.

Hell... none of you even knew if you could keep Humpty Dumpty together for 4 years when you started it. But you did it anyway. And now every last one of your bad bets, including this one have run dry.

And look at you. All of you. Now you're ready to just throw Joe* away like a used snot-rag.

There's a special place in Hell for all of you.

And yanno what....?

The more I think about it the more I realize that I trust old, senile, out-of-his mind Joe Biden* a fuck ton more than I trust any of you people in the propaganda business.

Just what are you all up to right now?

Biden better pull himself together pretty damn quick. I suggest he order Seal Team 6 to decapitate Trump and mount the skull on top of the flagpole at the White House. That will show the Trumptards that Biden has got his shit together. Yesterday the Supreme Court gave the President immunity from prosecution, so now is the perfect time:

Biden’s cognitive decline may be fairly recent

Washington DC is suddenly full of anonymous Democratic insiders who are dishing dirt on Joe Biden's parlous mental state. The New York Times rounds up a lot of them for a long story today, and if you read carefully one of the recurrent themes is that Biden's mental state has fallen off a cliff in just the last few months:

People in the room with him more recently said that the lapses seemed to be growing more frequent, more pronounced and more worrisome.... Last week’s debate prompted some around him to express concern that the decline had accelerated lately.... This person said Mr. Biden had shown a “sharp decline” since a meeting only weeks earlier.... A senior European official who was present said that there had been a noticeable decline in Mr. Biden’s physical state since the previous fall.

Politico described Biden as getting worse recently during routine briefings:

During meetings with aides who are putting together formal briefings they’ll deliver to Biden, some senior officials have at times gone to great lengths to curate the information being presented in an effort to avoid provoking a negative reaction. “It’s like, ‘You can’t include that, that will set him off,’ or ‘Put that in, he likes that,’” said one senior administration official. “It’s a Rorschach test, not a briefing. Because he is not a pleasant person to be around when he’s being briefed. It’s very difficult, and people are scared shitless of him.”

Angry outbursts are a bad sign. All of this is a bad sign. And it might explain why nobody talked about it until now: no one is going to tattle about occasional lapses, and it may be that Biden hasn't shown any serious cognitive issues until relatively recently.

In any case, if this is right it means things are going to get even worse in fairly short order. Unfortunately, Biden himself doesn't see it. When you start to lose your faculties, the first thing to go is your ability to recognize that you're losing your faculties.
