It was a pretty soggy Thursday but a very dry Friday. Suppose to be a little more rain tomorrow. Have to see then maybe dry out again for Canada Day on Monday.

Trenched out the back of my garage today. Pretty damn hot day to be doing it, but I don't argue when my brain starts telling my body to get back to work.

At least it rained the day before. Its really perfect timing doing it right now. The ground is wet enough to make digging fairly simple, but it's not so wet that you can't get the mud off the roots as it was when I was doing the fence.

We'll see how I'm feeling tomorrow. Much cooler outside for sure. Would love to get the side of the garage done.

Don't imagine I'll be doing much digging today. I'm going to mow the lawn though. Will be the first time doing that when it's not in the high 80s or mid 90s for a while, so that's nice.

Today was the last (sixth) morning for yardwork. Even tho I can only do about 1 1/2 hours each morning, I need a break! My knees and back are feeling the work.

So I start on indoor work, where I can sit down

This coming week, there are doctor's appts literally every day except July 4, but since there are TWO appointments on July 3, I guess that makes up for the holiday.

We start tomorrow with dog's dental surgery, and I had quite a time finding a vet that does dental X-rays and dental surgery that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

OK! On with indoor projects!

Well... I didn't trench anything out yesterday...

So I missed both the cool days to do that work. Guess I'll do it in the heat then.

I'd like to get the side of the garage down to the point of the driveway where I'm going to make the decision on how I want to carry that runoff down to the curb. It would be impossible for me to explain the situation there without pictures, but there's a low point on the driveway close to the overhead door on that side that pools up water when it's raining really hard. I'm hoping to be able to alleviate that in some way on that side without having to dig to put corrugated pipe underground.

The plan is to promote water leaving that area instead of staying put until the sun dries it. I think after I do what I'm doing it could possibly end up putting more water in that spot during the rain storm, but once the rain stops and things are moving around my hope is that it allows the water to drain away from there quickly instead of just sitting there for a day after a rainstorm. I haven't noticed any further shifting of my garage slab after I used Watertite on the cracks in the floor and outside on the slabs about 4 years ago, but I want to keep it that way.

Unlike the other side of the driveway/garage that meets up with the Bermuda Triangle where I intend to do a lot of drainage work, I'm hoping this is not necessary at all on the other side. If it weren't for that low spot in the driveway it wouldn't be for sure. The only water I'm trying to bring away on this side is the stuff that doesn't get caught by the gutters on one side of the garage and everything that falls on the driveway about 6 feet in front of the garage before it breaks down to the street. I don't imagine it's going to need too much persuasion like that mess on the other side is going to.

High is only 85 today, so not too bad. It's really cloudy out now too, so that would be nice if it stays that way until I'm finished. Haven't been outside yet, but I imagine it is probably really humid just from how everything looks out there.

Stay hydrated.

And keep up with your salt!

I had a reasonable day temperature -wise yesterday, but that was my day to take puppy to the vet for her exam and X-ray. And it turns out her mouth is in far worse shape than we all thought, so now I'm getting an estimate on having work done.
Sigh.

Today was a lot of silly things: sending x- ray report to another vet, coming up with a menu and grocery list for Thursday, watering the potted plants and seedlings, returning some gloves that are just a teensy bit long in the fingers, and sweats that are now styled differently that I don't like (the hazard of buying online) as well as walking the dog, dishes, fixing dinner, taking dear daughter out to buy fireworks (it's her 4th of July fun) etc. Tomorrow, still reasonable weather but ... two Dr appts. Thu will still be 85, so can do some outdoor work. Think I'm gonna fix a hose and cut up/bin up the passiflora vine and small cherry tree that we're cut down.

Yeah. Salt too.

Didn't quite finish the side of the garage done today. Had to take some time to join the back and the side at a 90 degree, and I got everything dug out. I still have about 10 feet or so left of "sod" to break up and reclaim as much of the mud as possible.

Once I do that I can take a look at the situation when it meets the driveway. Maybe tomorrow if I'm feeling it.

Poor doggo. :(

Hoping for a speedy recovery.

Well, I don't totally know about better. Some take longer to get used to in the role. I never liked Peter Capaldi as the Doctor. He played a later version. Now, older versions I loved Peter Davison as the Doctor and Tom Baker was the Doctor when I and my friend started watching the show. That was in high school.

The Doctors on this clip she and her room mate found had Christopher Eccelston and Colin Baker on it. I liked Eccelston's Doctor much better than Baker's Doctor but they are different time periods. *L* Colin Baker was the Doctor in the late 80s and Christopher Eccelston was the start of the new batch of actors which includes Matt Smith. The woman who played Peri was a companion of Peter Davison's Doctor, who was right after Tom Baker.

Got a phone call a bit ago. No afternoon mah jong for me. Again not enough players for 2 tables.

There is some heat heading my way by the end of the week. Temps should reach around 30 by Sunday. It will be worse in the Valley and up the Interior. Weather people expect records could be broken.

I guess if I had a Dr., Christopher Eccelston would be mine.

That was my first exposure to Dr. Who. I'm pretty sure I didn't even realize it was an old British show until many years later. They'd play it on Sci-Fi and I'd caught a few episodes, but I was like 20 years old and never watched anything weekly. So I could get the "freak of the week" stuff going on but I didn't really have any idea what's going on.

It's funny that even though I haven't watched a single episode since Christopher, I know way more about Dr. Who now because of the internet.

I just liked the dude in 28 Days Later. Thought it was cool to see him in a way different role. Never seen him in anything else after those. I'm sure he had a decent career in the UK though.

I liked Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor. Thought he fit the role really well.

That sounds like how I found the Doctor. Was looking for something to watch around midnight on a Saturday night and stumbled across this show. Wondering what it was I watched and thought it's okay. So, I started watching it regularly and told my friend about and she said that her dad had been watching it for years. Then the station moved it to Saturday afternoon and we would still watch it.

Never seen 28 Days though I have heard of it but then I'm not much into horror. Think someone told me he was in Heroes. I could be wrong. Would have to look up the cast for that show. I'm sure he has had a good career at home.

Yeah. That sounds about how I found out about it too.

I just thought it was some oddball low-budget Sci-Fi TV show. I remember those evil sentient robot things that were famous from the show and just how laughably cheap everything looked. But I did like the doctor and the companion and their chemistry. I think I might have caught 5 episodes of that season and never thought about it again until 10 or so years when I found out about how big of a thing it's been for decades in the UK.

I don't generally watch the horror genre as a rule unless I get my younger brother to force me into watching something. 28 Days Later is a lot more than that though. Technically, it's not even a "Zombie" movie since these all are human beings who get infected with a lab created virus that got loose. If you watched the first episode of The Walking Dead, they got a lot of inspiration from 28 Days Later.

If you like Cillian Murphy and anything he's been in over the years, that's where he got his start.

I would highly recommend 28 Days Later if you've got nothing else to watch. I think you'll really like it. If you do, I'd also recommend giving the sequel 28 Weeks Later a watch too. It wasn't as good, and it didn't focus on anybody from the first movie, but it was still a pretty good flick and an update to that story. I hear they're going to make a 28 years later. Wouldn't mind seeing that one too if they do.

Personally, my favorite role Chris Eccleston has ever been in was playing himself last year telling his fans what it would take for him to come back to Dr. Who in 2024.

Yeah, I watched pretty well the whole 1st season with Tom Baker and from then on. I was hooked. I found out later how big a deal it was in the UK too after I started watching it.

I'll have a think about it as I think my library still has a copy of it. I got to there tomorrow as I have something to return. I am rewatching "Bon Cop, Bad Cop" again.

That clip you included looks and sounds like the clip my friend and her room mate found on YouTube.

I know next to nothing about Dr Who. Fortunately I found the CliffsNotes version

I was surprised at how short the tenure was for each Dr Who. I had an idea thst there was one guy in the role for, like, 20 years. Boy, was I wrong!

Back and done for today. Not a bad morning at mah jong. I got second place. Had a hand with all 4 red flowers, one dragon and what I was collecting and that was six doubles. So, I finished the morning with over 5,000 points.

Temp is reading around 26C which is 82F. So, not too hot around me.

Tom Baker the guy with curly hair was the longest on tv. He had the role for 7 seasons. He only left because of a disagreement on the direction the writers, I think wanted to take the character.

I guess Baker must have hit the right tone with a lot of people. I'll have to checks out a few of his episodes.

Tonight we walked over to our neighbors and did fireworks with them in the street. Them, and the next two houses down the street. it was pretty cool!

Sounds like a good time Sigs.

I went over to my friends and we had dinner. Even got to see another one of my friends I haven't seen in a while and his family which I haven't seen since last summer. That was nice. They even managed to get me into the pool. And I'm glad I did it. I probably haven't been in a swimming pool in 15 years at this point.

They gave me trunks maybe 2 years ago, but I always said no to the pool before the diabetes, and then after I got my monitor it was just easy to get out of. But for some reason before I left for their place today I decided to pack those trunks in my bag and actually used em this time.

In fact, a minute after I was in the pool I forgot I had them on and didn't even think about it until I was out for the day and checking if they still worked.

I forgot how good you feel for about 30 minutes after you get out of the pool. My buddy said again tonight I'm always welcome to come over and swim during the day even if he's out at work. He's always told me that. I should probably think about taking him up on that offer.

They had some pretty good fireworks too. My buddy lives in a pretty rich area. There were neighbors a few blocks down who had things going off so intense I thought that was the city doing their thing. He said the city did their thing last weekend. There's some people around there who will blow $10k on fireworks.

That's nutty. Never saw the appeal myself. At least not since I was 12 years old. Especially not after I was old enough to be the one paying for them. Buying fireworks is just about the closest thing there is to literally setting your money on fire. If somebody in that neighborhood spent $10k tonight on their show, that was all the money I'd spend in 2024 on everything and it would get me close to 2/5ths of what I'd need for 2025.

It's cool to watch all of it for free though.

Oh yeah... he texted me before my lazy ass got out of bed at noon to ask me if I knew how to fix a water heater. The woke up to taking cold showers this morning.

I told them I had a few ideas and I'd take a look at it. I really only had one, but it was the only one I needed. The pilot just went out for some reason. I remember the first time it happened to me maybe 8 or 9 years ago and I freaked out a bit before getting down there and reading all the instructions they printed on it and what the various LED light patterns meant. It's awesome they print all of those important things right there on all of them, and even though his was designed quite a bit different than mine it was easy enough to figure it out without asking him if he still had his manual or if he could find one on his phone for me.

I still wince if I realize I have no hot water because my heater is getting a little long in the tooth and one day she's just going to quit working for real, but if everything else is working fine and that pilot light just went out for some strange reason, it's like a 1 minute fix and it looks like you're a magician when you do it.

They're pretty rare, but those are the best fixes of all the fixes. When you can fix something for a friend and you don't even break a sweat doing it.

I think he did and he also just fell in love with the part and would have stayed longer imagine if he hadn't had that disagreement.

Out for my walk in a bit on a bright sunny day. My area is sitting at 23C right now according to computer temp and that is 76F.

Washington State according to the weather person on the news I watch from down there is really going to be suffering. Calling for a heat dome down there.

The sun will help improve my mood. Just went strolling through my email and got another rejection from a publisher. I shot an email off to the lady helping me to let her know and let her know what I have found on my trek through other publishers.

Though on the plus side email from library on DVD waiting for me. So, I will pick that up on my way back today.

I'll have a think about it as I think my library still has a copy of it. I got to there tomorrow as I have something to return. I am rewatching "Bon Cop, Bad Cop" again.

That clip you included looks and sounds like the clip my friend and her room mate found on YouTube.

I don't know who Tom Baker is. I know the guy who played Killgrave in Jessica Jones was the Doctor for a while there, but I forget what his name is at the moment. I think they may have tried bringing him back to renew some interest in the show after they basically killed it over the last few years.

Have you seen anything Dr. Who that was made in the last 5 years?

That clip was a good one. It seems some of the people who have been involved in all the bad changes they've made to the show recently were attached to the show all those years ago, but they didn't have the creative control they've got today.

Chris Eccleston didn't seem to like them back then either.

Yes, I have. I've seen almost all of this new bunch of Drs, starting with Eccleston. Outside of him of the new, my favorite actor to play the Doctor was David Tenant. By the time Matt Smith left the show I was just getting used to him as the Doctor. One of my least favourite versions of the Doctor was played by Peter Capaldi.

I know. My friend told me that Christopher Eccleston had a problem and probably why he left.

Most actors take on the role for about 3 years depending if they are liked by the audience it seems. Though as I told SIG, Tom Baker would have stayed on longer if he hadn't had a disagreement back in the early 80s. Colin Baker and no relation to Tom, was let go and probably would have left over the writing from what I remember of his time as the Doctor.

I have seen every incarnation of the Doctor except for this latest one. As it is now on a streaming service and I don't have any of those.

Trenched out to the street from the garage today. Huge mess, and after the first few hours I didn't beat out any of the dirt from the 60 or so feet of sod and just piled it up on a tarp in the sandpit. Otherwise it was never going to get finished today and I wanted to get my digging done on the only day I see in the forecast under 80 degrees.

Managed to get it all done and cleaned up before sundown.

I think the next step is trenching out the garage slab so I can get my steel wire mesh in there perpendicularly every foot or so to prevent the moles from making their travel tunnels along it. It's worked great up against the house. I wish I did it along my front porch slab too since they did put a tunnel there last year. At least the house and garage will have that protection when I'm done.

Got my leveling sand and a bag of the interlocking sand you fill between the pavers and wet down to activate some agent in it. It's a weed blocker and whatever you fill in the cracks is supposed to stay put. It better work. The one bag costs 5 times what the leveling sand costs.

Once I get that mesh in there, I should be able to stack the dirt high the other way against the slab and get myself a flat surface with my dirt tamper and get some leveling sand down there and finally start putting pavers in.

I make no promises on when that will happen. If it happens tomorrow, that's great. If it doesn't happen tomorrow that's okay too.

Today, tomorrow and Monday were/ are supposed to max out at or below 85. And since that's my "outdoor work" cutoff that was the oppty to get stuff done. But when my alarm went off I just said "eff it" and went back to sleep.

But in the family came out and helped me clean up ... a lot more than I had anticipated! In addition to pulling down the passionfruit vines, hubby cut down a couple of small wild cherry trees that never grew right, and cut up the trunks. All that is left for me is to finish clipping up the small branches so I can bin up the waste.

Also I finally got my rat traps, so I'm going to put out two or three. See whether those work. If not, it's poison bait in bait stations.

Nothing wrong with that.

That's cool. Do they usually do that type of stuff with you?

I totally forgot...

A 5 gallon bucket half full of water and sunflower seeds is all you need.

I see videos online with all the fancy traps that look great on camera and make the mice or rats or whatever is trying to get the food do a balancing act before they flip the thing and fall into the water.

You don't need anything that elaborate. I just remembered my friend did it with just the water and seeds a few years ago and it worked really well for him. He kept telling me they were chipmunks that he was trying to catch. Hard to tell because they were wet when the pictures were taken, but I think there's a good argument they may have been rats.

I know drowning is a harsh punishment, but that's your house.

Good luck whatever you do.
