Trump will be fine.
He will also be your next President.

I wonder if any of Trump’s fans realize that his standard stump speech is simply an invented fantasy from beginning to end?

Trump: “They also gave up Bagram [in Afghanistan], one of the biggest bases anywhere in the world.... And you know who has it now? China has it now.”

There were rumors back in 2021 about the Taliban giving China access to Bagram, but it never happened.

Trump: “Israel has an Iron Dome. They have a missile defense system. Three hundred forty-two missiles were shot into Israel, and only one got through a little bit.... We’re going to build an iron dome over our country, and we’re going to be sure that nothing can come and harm our people.”

Iron Dome, which protects Israel from short-range missiles, was largely funded by the US and some of it was co-produced by the US. In short, we already have it and it's deployed in the Red Sea (among other places), which is why all 342 of those Iranian missiles and drones were shot down. As for a bigger version, a la Ronald Reagan's SDI (aka Star Wars), that's for ICBMs, not short-range missiles. We've continued working on that since the '80s, but the technology remains problematic.

Trump: “We’re going to get to the bottom of it. You remember [Biden] said we’re going to find a cure to cancer; nothing happened. We’re going to get to the cure for cancer and Alzheimer’s and so many other things. We’re so close to doing something great. But we need a leader that will let it be done.”

We are nowhere near cures for cancer or Alzheimer's. This has nothing to do with political leadership and there is nothing to get to the bottom of.

Trump: “Our crime rate is going up, while crime statistics all over the world are going down.”

No. Crime in the US has dropped during every year of the Biden administration.

Trump: “Probably the best trade deal was the deal I made with China where they buy $50 billion of our product. They were buying nothing. They buy $50 billion worth.”

The agreement was for $200 billion and China never made good on it.

Trump: “Americans are being squeezed out of the labor force and their jobs are taken. By the way, you know who’s taking the jobs, the jobs that are created? One hundred and seven percent of those jobs are taken by illegal aliens.”

When Joe Biden took office the employment level of native born workers was 123 million. Today it's 131 million. That's an increase in the employment rate from 56.5% to 59.4%.

Joe sounds very senile but I don't see a third party rising winning second place, the Libertartain, Independent, Green Party, Vermont Progressive Party, Independent Party of Oregon, Texas Separatists , California Separatists, Alaska Independence, Movimiento Victoria Ciudadana, Constitution Party, extinct Whigs and Bull Moose Party, Social Marxist Communist party, Transhumanist Party.

Even if Democrats fail they comeback as it is set up for the 2 party system

Donald Trump Is Out. Are We Ready to Talk About How He Got In?

I’ve been thinking about Barbara Tuchman’s medieval history, A Distant Mirror, over the past couple of weeks. The book is a masterful work of anti-romance, a cold-eyed look at how generations of aristocrats and royalty waged one of the longest wars in recorded history, all while claiming the mantle of a benevolent God. The disabusing begins early. In the introduction, Tuchman examines the ideal of chivalry and finds, beneath the poetry and codes of honor, little more than myth and delusion.

Knights “were supposed, in theory, to serve as defenders of the Faith, upholders of justice, champions of the oppressed,” Tuchman writes. “In practice, they were themselves the oppressors, and by the 14th century, the violence and lawlessness of men of the sword had become a major agency of disorder.”

The chasm between professed ideal and actual practice is not surprising. No one wants to believe themselves to be the villain of history, and when you have enough power, you can hold reality at bay. Raw power transfigured an age of serfdom and warmongering into one of piety and courtly love.

This is not merely a problem of history. Twice now, Rudy Giuliani has incited a mob of authoritarians. In the interim, “America’s Mayor” was lauded locally for crime drops that manifested nationally. No matter. The image of Giuliani as a pioneering crime fighter gave cover to his more lamentable habits—arresting whistleblowers, defaming dead altar boys, and raiding homeless shelters in the dead of night. Giuliani was, by Jimmy Breslin’s lights, “blind, mean, and duplicitous,” a man prone to displays “of great nervousness if more than one black at a time entered City Hall.” And yet much chin-stroking has been dedicated to understanding how Giuliani, once the standard-bearer for moderate Republicanism, a man who was literally knighted, was reduced to inciting a riot at the U.S. Capitol. The answer is that Giuliani wasn’t reduced at all. The inability to see what was right before us—that Giuliani was always, in Breslin’s words, “a small man in search of a balcony”—is less about Giuliani and more about what people would rather not see.

And what is true of Giuliani is particularly true of his master. It was popular, at the time of Donald Trump’s ascension, to stand on the thinnest of reeds in order to avoid stating the obvious. It was said that the Trump presidency was the fruit of “economic anxiety,” of trigger warnings and the push for trans rights. We were told that it was wrong to call Trump a white supremacist, because he had merely “drawn upon their themes.”

One hopes that after four years of brown children in cages; of attempts to invalidate the will of Black voters in Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Detroit; of hearing Trump tell congresswomen of color to go back where they came from; of claims that Joe Biden would turn Minnesota into “a refugee camp”; of his constant invocations of “the Chinese virus,” we can now safely conclude that Trump believes in a world where white people are—or should be—on top. It is still deeply challenging for so many people to accept the reality of what has happened—that a country has been captured by the worst of its history, while millions of Americans cheered this on.

The temptation to look away is strong. This summer I watched as whole barrels of ink were emptied to champion free speech and denounce “cancel culture.” Meanwhile, from the most powerful office in the world, Trump issued executive orders targeting a journalistic institution and promoted “patriotic education.” The indifference to his incredible acts was telling. So much for chivalry.

The mix of blindness and pedantry did not plague merely writers, but also policy makers and executives. “The FBI does not talk in terms of terrorism committed by white people,” the journalist Spencer Ackerman wrote in the days after the January 6 riot at the Capitol. “Attempting to appear politically ecumenical, a recent bureaucratic overhaul during an accelerated period of domestic terrorism created the category of ‘racially motivated violent extremism.’” But only so ecumenical. “For all its hesitation over white terror,” Ackerman continued, “the FBI until at least 2018 maintained an investigative category about a nebulous and exponentially less deadly thing it called ‘Black Identity Extremism.’”

“When the gap between ideal and real becomes too wide,” Tuchman writes, “the system breaks down.” One hopes that this moment for America has arrived, that it can at last see that the sight of cops and a Confederate flag among the mob on January 6, the mockery of George Floyd and the politesse on display among some of the Capitol Police, are not a matter of chance.

More, that Trumpism did not begin with Trump; that the same Republican Party some now recall in wistful and nostalgic tones planted seeds of insurrection with specious claims of voter fraud; that the decision to storm the Capitol follows directly, and logically, from respectable Republicans who claim that Democrats steal elections and defraud this country’s citizens out of their right to self-government.

This, of course, is not my first time contemplating the import of such things. “The First White President” was the culmination of the years I’d spent watching the pieces fall into place. Pieces that, once assembled, finally gave us Trump. I’m sorry to report that I think the article holds up well. This would be a much better world if it didn’t. But in this world, an army has been marshaled and barbed wire installed, and the FBI is on guard against an inside job. Whatever this is—whatever we decide to call this—it is not peaceful, and it is not, in many ways, a transition. It is something darker. Are we now, at last, prepared to ask why?

The following is an excerpt from Ta-Nehisi Coates’s October 2017 cover story, “The First White President.” You can find the full essay here. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/10/the-first-white-p

It is insufficient to state the obvious of Donald Trump: that he is a white man who would not be president were it not for this fact. With one immediate exception, Trump’s predecessors made their way to high office through the passive power of whiteness—that bloody heirloom which cannot ensure mastery of all events but can conjure a tailwind for most of them. Land theft and human plunder cleared the grounds for Trump’s forefathers and barred others from it. Once upon the field, these men became soldiers, statesmen, and scholars; held court in Paris; presided at Princeton; advanced into the Wilderness and then into the White House. Their individual triumphs made this exclusive party seem above America’s founding sins, and it was forgotten that the former was in fact bound to the latter, that all their victories had transpired on cleared grounds. No such elegant detachment can be attributed to Donald Trump—a president who, more than any other, has made the awful inheritance explicit.

His political career began in advocacy of birtherism, that modern recasting of the old American precept that black people are not fit to be citizens of the country they built. But long before birtherism, Trump had made his worldview clear. He fought to keep blacks out of his buildings, according to the U.S. government; called for the death penalty for the eventually exonerated Central Park Five; and railed against “lazy” black employees. “Black guys counting my money! I hate it,” Trump was once quoted as saying. “The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day.” After his cabal of conspiracy theorists forced Barack Obama to present his birth certificate, Trump demanded the president’s college grades (offering $5 million in exchange for them), insisting that Obama was not intelligent enough to have gone to an Ivy League school, and that his acclaimed memoir, Dreams From My Father, had been ghostwritten by a white man, Bill Ayers.

It is often said that Trump has no real ideology, which is not true—his ideology is white supremacy, in all its truculent and sanctimonious power. Trump inaugurated his campaign by casting himself as the defender of white maidenhood against Mexican “rapists,” only to be later alleged by multiple accusers, and by his own proud words, to be a sexual violator himself. White supremacy has always had a perverse sexual tint. Trump’s rise was shepherded by Steve Bannon, a man who mocks his white male critics as “cucks.” The word, derived from cuckold, is specifically meant to debase by fear and fantasy—the target is so weak that he would submit to the humiliation of having his white wife lie with black men. That the slur cuck casts white men as victims aligns with the dicta of whiteness, which seek to alchemize one’s profligate sins into virtue. So it was with Virginia slaveholders claiming that Britain sought to make slaves of them. So it was with marauding Klansmen organized against alleged rapes and other outrages. So it was with a candidate who called for a foreign power to hack his opponent’s email and who now, as president, is claiming to be the victim of “the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history.”

In Trump, white supremacists see one of their own. Only grudgingly did Trump denounce the Ku Klux Klan and David Duke, one of its former grand wizards—and after the clashes between white supremacists and counterprotesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August, Duke in turn praised Trump’s contentious claim that “both sides” were responsible for the violence.

To Trump, whiteness is neither notional nor symbolic but is the very core of his power. In this, Trump is not singular. But whereas his forebears carried whiteness like an ancestral talisman, Trump cracked the glowing amulet open, releasing its eldritch energies. The repercussions are striking: Trump is the first president to have served in no public capacity before ascending to his perch. But more telling, Trump is also the first president to have publicly affirmed that his daughter is a “piece of ass.” The mind seizes trying to imagine a black man extolling the virtues of sexual assault on tape (“When you’re a star, they let you do it”), fending off multiple accusations of such assaults, immersed in multiple lawsuits for allegedly fraudulent business dealings, exhorting his followers to violence, and then strolling into the White House. But that is the point of white supremacy—to ensure that that which all others achieve with maximal effort, white people (particularly white men) achieve with minimal qualification. Barack Obama delivered to black people the hoary message that if they work twice as hard as white people, anything is possible. But Trump’s counter is persuasive: Work half as hard as black people, and even more is possible.

For Trump, it almost seems that the fact of Obama, the fact of a black president, insulted him personally. The insult intensified when Obama and Seth Meyers publicly humiliated him at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in 2011. But the bloody heirloom ensures the last laugh. Replacing Obama is not enough—Trump has made the negation of Obama’s legacy the foundation of his own. And this too is whiteness. “Race is an idea, not a fact,” the historian Nell Irvin Painter has written, and essential to the construct of a “white race” is the idea of not being a nigger. Before Barack Obama, niggers could be manufactured out of Sister Souljahs, Willie Hortons, and Dusky Sallys. But Donald Trump arrived in the wake of something more potent—an entire nigger presidency with nigger health care, nigger climate accords, and nigger justice reform, all of which could be targeted for destruction or redemption, thus reifying the idea of being white. Trump truly is something new—the first president whose entire political existence hinges on the fact of a black president. And so it will not suffice to say that Trump is a white man like all the others who rose to become president. He must be called by his rightful honorific—America’s first white president.

Those were all people you fuckin' lunatics deemed "non-essential workers" and you put out of work.

Before Democrats worked with China to release Covid onto the world to stop the Trump Presidency, he oversaw the lowest unemployment rate in generations. Gas was half the price it's been during Biden*'s presidency. Heating your home in the winter was half the cost it's been in the Biden presidency. Groceries cost 40% less. Homes were still affordable.

Don't bark up the economy tree. You lose that battle 100 out of 100 times.

Feeling betrayed by people he thought were friends and allies, he’s hitting back by making the most incendiary charge one Dem can make against others: blaming them for Trump’s 2016 election.

A Biden source tells NBC: “Can we all just remember for a minute that these same people who are trying to push Joe Biden out are the same people who literally gave us Donald Trump? In 2015, Obama, Pelosi, Schumer pushed Biden aside in favor of Hillary; they were wrong then, and they are wrong now.”

That's a pretty legitimate charge there.

How come Democrats only tell the truth when there's no other option for them?

Dems Go Full Throttle On Kamala After Biden Drops Out Of 2024 Race

Update (1630ET): And just like that, the Democratic party has gone all-in for Kamala Harris - who did so poorly in the 2020 election that she dropped out before the primaries. Just hours after Biden's campaign manager insisted he wasn't leaving the race.

Oh...

Lefties from the Clintons, to the Progressive Caucus, to Trump assassination jokester Reid Hoffman, to Alexander Soros, are now firmly behind Harris.

Now the question turns to who's going to be her VP pick. Newsweek suggests these as top-5 candidates:

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro
A rising Democratic star, Josh Shapiro is often floated as a possible running mate for Harris. He governs a major battleground state and could help Harris make inroads among voters in the Keystone State.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper
Roy Cooper's governorship has been a sign of hope for Democrats in the Tar Heel state.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer
Gretchen Whitmer's name has long been floated as a possible presidential candidate, and a Harris-Whitmer ticket would mark the first all-women ticket in history, which Pitney described as "intriguing."

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear
Andy Beshear impressed many Democrats when he won a second term in the conservative state last year.

California Governor Gavin Newsom
Newsom has become one of the most nationally recognizable figures within the Democratic Party.

According to Polymarket, Shapiro is the top contender.

Biden was drunk for the first debate while Trump was high on speed. So? Since Trumptards live foolishly, they don't care that Trump is a liar, tax cheater, and crazy, but Democrats do care when Biden is intoxicated, which is why he is out. He should have resigned immediately, the old fart, but this is the next best thing, and less than a month passed before the decision was made.

How did Biden find himself in arguably the worst position of any incumbent running for reelection in the past half-century?

With the president flailing in the polls, his team took an unprecedented gamble by agreeing to move the first televised general election debate up to June 27. They worked hard to box out Robert F. Kennedy Jr. so that they could get Trump one-on-one. The president reportedly spent at least a week in full debate preparation mode, and they felt they had Trump cornered. Republicans had spent months, they said, caricaturing the president as senile and checked out, and therefore all Biden had to do was show up and clear the low bar of seeming to be in full possession of his faculties. Game, set, match.

But it was clear within 90 seconds of the debate’s kickoff that this was not what would happen. Biden didn’t just seem low energy and contemptuous of his opponent, like the bored, indifferent Barack Obama who showed up to his first debate with Mitt Romney in 2012. Biden seemed, instead, hopelessly confused, his voice raspy and barely audible, unable to complete consecutive sentences or push back on the uninterrupted stream of hallucinations coming out of Donald Trump’s mouth. Biden frequently sported a terrifyingly vacant stare. Anyone who has watched helplessly as an elderly loved one went downhill was instantly transported to some of the worst, most painful days of their lives. It was, in short, possibly the most politically damaging two hours that any living candidate has experienced.

There was never any coming back from that night for Biden. The only question in the days and weeks that followed was what strategy party elites would settle on to try and convince him to step aside and who, if anyone, they would coalesce around. As the Democratic political class fell into full-on public meltdown mode, Biden dug in. We still don’t know who did what and when, but clearly a number of leading Democrats reached out to the president to try and gently usher him aside, behind the scenes, in a way that would preserve his dignity and not cause him to get feral and stay in the race out of spite.

Harris will get destroyed. Every poll that's ever come out with that possibility showed her losing to Trump by double the margin that Joe Biden* lost.

Kamala Harris couldn't even take 4th place in the 2020 primaries, and was later hand-picked by the Joe Biden* campaign as a blatant diversity hire who they've more or less hidden from the public for 4 years after she served her purpose and got a bunch of college "educated" white liberals to vote for the first female/minority Veep.

Kamala Harris is a borderline-retard who fucked her way to the top and she can't even use old age as her excuse for being wrong about everything any time she opens up her stupid mouth. The only reason anyone like Harris graduates college is because she was a quota filling guest with a free ride.

SPOILER ALERT: If you thought the Joe Biden* debate was bad after 3.5 years of the Legacy Media lying to you about the mental state of Joe Biden*, just wait until you start seeing what idiot Harris sounds like with a mic in front of her now that all the focus will be on her. And god help her if she can't get out of debating Trump before Election Day.

You're finished.

Now that's how you make a Tick Tock thread, Theodore.

If anybody is wondering why he doesn't just call it quits this very second since it's clear to everyone in the world that Joe Biden* can't even wipe his own ass at this point, let alone continue his job being the "leader of the free world", well here you go...

Over 60 Billionaires are Backing Donald Trump for President Who is Running as Anti-Establishment Candidate

July 21, 2024

As Donald Trump campaigns for a second term as President of the United States, he has garnered substantial financial backing from over five dozen billionaires. This influx of support, revealed through recent Federal Election Commission filings, underscores the significant role that wealthy donors are playing in Trump’s bid for the presidency.

Key Supporters and Their Contributions

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and social media platform X, has pledged to donate $45 million monthly to a pro-Trump super PAC, America PAC, which was formed by his associates. Other prominent donors include venture capitalists Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, who have publicly committed to making large donations to Trump-backing groups.

I just needed to watch him a few times until I realized that Biden wasn't the one making the decisions. THAT'S why I put the asterisk after his name. Not, as you misstated, bc I thought he* stole the election.

Joe's been hiding in a basement most of his tenure. Sullivan and Blinken speak "for" him, and every time he was required to speak for himself, people held their breathe, waiting for another fuckup.

Who could forget Xi's visit to California, when, with Blinken watching on in still horror, Joe called Xi a "dictator". Again.

You missed that Trump is on speed. You only have to watch his debate performance to see it. Or any time he is public. VP Harris will chop Trump into little pieces during a debate. If Trump wins the election, Biden will order his assassination. The Supreme Court specifically ruled that a President could assassinate a political rival and not be charged with murder:

Did the Supreme Court really just give U.S. presidents the power to assassinate opponents? We asked constitutional scholars their thoughts. On paper, perhaps. Liberal justices argue it did. In their dissent in the historic presidential immunity case, Trump v. United States, the court's minority claimed the decision did more — much more — than just help the former U.S. president potentially escape his most serious legal predicament.

No he wasn't. Biden* wasn't drunk either.

Biden* just seemed drunk to you since you happily allowed the Legacy Media to do all the thinking for you the last 4 years and tell you that he was mentally sound despite hundreds of hours of collective footage proving otherwise. Trump just seemed like he was on speed to you because Biden* looked like he was walking underwater he was so slow.

Joe Biden is allowed to assassinate Trump if it is considered a necessary action, defending the country from irreperable harm if it doesn't happen. Not any different than GWB and Obama were given a hall pass to murder anybody around the world they felt like via drone strikes before this ruling.

I know that you personally feel like it's the end of America if Trump gets reelected because that's what your idiot puppet masters at MSNBC and the NYT tell you everyday, but I can assure you that nobody was given permission to assassinate their political opposition with that Supreme Court ruling.

I won't bother explaining concepts like this to you any further because you're somebody else's brat kid and it's not my responsibility to make sure you know a single damn thing about civics and law.

Meanwhile, shut the fuck up, retard, and bury that Reaverfan persona as deep down in your sad little sack of flesh that you can. Your rhetoric is borderline dangerous for the 2nd time in a week, and you're just proving once again that it is people on the LEFT who are guilty of all the things they accuse everyone else of doing. They just had the pleasure of being told they were right by the entire Legacy Media the better part of the last decade and now that this media behavior has halted, everybody gets to see you without your clothes on.

You used the words "allowed" and "considered" necessary. Until July 1, 2024, when TRUMP v. UNITED STATES was decided, it was NOT allowed and was NOT considered necessary. No President would do it because there would be consequences for the President, such as going to jail. But the Supreme Court ruled Presidents can't go to jail.

On Feb 6, 2024, the Federal Court ruled that Trump does NOT have immunity. There was a trial and a 57 page long decision written in just days that Trump could go to jail for official or non-official acts. You can read that decision:

https://www.cadc.uscourts.gov/internet/opinions.nsf/1AC5A0E7090A350785
258ABB0052D942/$file/23-3228-2039001.pdf

Then the Trumptards on Supreme Court required six months to write a political decision that proclaims Trump cannot go to jail. Three non-Trumptards Supreme Court justices wrote that jail is the only thing holding Presidents to a standard of conduct. Without jail, Presidents could behave as badly as Emperor Nero, who also could not be sent to jail because he was a minor god to which some but not all Romans prayed. The Trumptards I know act as if Trump is one of their gods, a Major Divinity.

The true believers in Trump on the Supreme Court are respecting their god who was disrespected by a lower court. From that court's very blunt decision:
Quote:

And on August 1, 2023, in Washington, D.C., former President Trump was charged in a four-count Indictment as a result of his actions challenging the election results and interfering with the sequence set forth in the Constitution for the transfer of power from one President to the next. Former President Trump moved to dismiss the Indictment and the district court denied his motion. Today, we affirm the denial. For the purpose of this criminal case, former President Trump has become citizen Trump, with all of the defenses of any other criminal defendant. But any executive immunity that may have protected him while he served as President no longer protects him against this prosecution.

Biden’s continued candidacy was an insult to the intelligence of American voters

Helen Lewis writes:

Allow me to summarize the response from outside America to the news that President Joe Biden is not running for reelection: Thank God.

Here in Britain, the most common reaction in the minutes after the news broke was sheer relief. Relief that Donald Trump will not be allowed an easy path to a second term. Relief that the Democrats will put forward a candidate who is able to bear a full campaign schedule—defending the party’s record and advancing its best arguments. Relief, too, that the party would not be insulting the intelligence of voters by insincerely pushing a candidate that its leaders must have understood was a lemon.

The last of those has dominated my thinking since the disastrous CNN debate in June. Imagine that Biden’s staffers had gently shepherded him over the line, coaching him through interviews and propping him up through public events. Imagine that Biden had somehow won the election despite the evidence of the polls—and then, disaster. Within months or weeks, it surely would have become apparent that he was unable to serve a full term.

If all of that happened, then the American people would have, quite rightly, felt that they had been duped. Any sense of the moral high ground—something the Democrats have been keen to claim in the face of Trump’s very real outrages—would have disappeared. How can you ask the voters to trust you when you don’t trust them enough to tell them the truth?

Biden changed his policies in the last three weeks in order to save his campaign

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2024/07/biden-endorse-harris-vp-ao
c-bernie-sanders.html

Between the stump speeches and public appearances—and multiple closed-door appeals to his Democratic colleagues—President Joe Biden spent the last three weeks of his now-concluded reelection campaign doing something unexpected: rolling out a robust set of progressive policies.

He hammered corporate greed. He promised to make the rich pay more taxes. He pushed for the expansion of Social Security and called for eliminating medical debt. He started drawing up plans for Supreme Court reform, and promised rent control caps to deal with the high cost of housing nation-wide.

It started with his NATO press conference (the one where the president accidentally called Ukrainian President Zelensky “President Putin”) and it signaled a remarkable shift for the Biden campaign.

During general election seasons, presidential hopefuls almost always tack politically to the center, hoping to court undecided voters who are presumed to have centrist leanings. In the months leading up to Biden’s late June debate with Trump, this is exactly what the president did. His signature policies over that period were a hawkish, uncritical embrace of the Netanyahu government in Israel, condemnation of student protestors, and an executive order crackdown on longstanding asylum policies.

But after the calamitous debate performance that ultimately led to his historic decision to step down from the 2024 ticket, Biden zagged back towards the left, unveiling a handful of sweeping progressive policy commitments—some of which seemed to be brand new additions to the platform.

It’s unclear if this surprising new tranche of Biden proposals will become priorities for Vice President Kamala Harris, who is almost indisputably going to be the next Democratic nominee. Still, that the president pushed an emphatic vision of governing in the interest of the middle and working class was a welcome development—even if it was way too late to save his campaign.

There are several likely reasons for the rapid rollout of these proposals.

First, and perhaps most importantly, the proposals Biden embraced at the eleventh hour tend to poll extremely favorably. Expansion of Social Security and medical debt relief are well regarded by Democrats, independents, and Republicans alike. Ditto raising taxes on the wealthy, which has long been a priority of the president.

Given Biden’s historically low approval ratings this year, the move to refocus his campaign around popular policies makes plenty of sense. And it gave his campaign a way to highlight the vast difference between Democrats and Project 2025, the conservative policy wish list put together by a bunch of former Trump aides and affiliates, which is chock full of deeply unpopular suggestions, including abolishing the Department of Education.

American voters continue to hate Trump, who is scarcely more beloved than Biden. But hammering the former president on character seemed to carry less promise than it initially did. (That’s especially true after the assassination attempt.) The good news for Democrats is that American voters also hate Trump’s policies.

Advisers to the president insisted to the Washington Post that Biden had sincerely backed these progressive policies all along, but the timing is doubly notable for another reason—the avalanche of proposals (some of which may have be in the works for months) came immediately after a number of meetings Biden had with progressives in an attempt to shore up support.

Trump's The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act Failed to Deliver Promised Benefits

By Jean Ross | July 22, 2024

https://angrybearblog.com/2024/07/2017-tax-breaks-and-jobs-act-failed-
to-deliver

Benefits of the 2017 tax changes were overwhelmingly skewed toward the wealthy

The 2017 law changes disproportionately benefited the highest-income households. In 2025—the last year before the temporary changes to the personal income and estate tax provisions expire—households in the top 1 percent of the income distribution will receive an average tax cut of $61,090. In contrast, those in the middle quintile of the distribution will receive an average reduction of $910, while those in the lowest quintile will receive, on average, just a $70 reduction.

17 thoughts on the transformation of the race
With more to come later, no doubt.

Matthew Yglesias | Jul 22, 2024

https://www.slowboring.com/p/17-thoughts-on-the-transformation

14. The good news for Harris is that her basic political problem — she is perceived as more liberal than the average voter — is extremely fixable.

15. She needs to fix that by saying and doing some things that help make her public image more moderate, ideally things that are either true (“some people belong in prison and it’s that simple”) or lacking in policy substance (“my parents moved to this country because it’s the greatest place on Earth, and I think my party and our school system need to get back to teaching kids patriotism”).

16. If Harris does the right thing and moderates, a big question for the left will be do they let her get away with it (as the right has let Trump say whatever he thinks he needs to say on abortion) or will they spend the whole final stretch of the campaign whining (they way they did with Hillary)? I think the Biden formula of prioritizing unity over all else basically failed, but he was right to perceive that dissent from the left hurt Clinton. Progressives need to decide if they want to win.

17. Biden made a difficult choice to do the right thing for the country, and it is utterly inconceivable to me that Trump would ever set aside his interests or his ego for any greater good. Trump loves the slogan “America First” because it implies he’ll help you by screwing over foreigners, but I think on some level, we all know that Trump puts Trump first. It’s Joe Biden who just showed us what it looks like to put America first.

I have been saying ALL ALONG THAT TRUMP MAY HAVE A GALLOPING CASE OF ADULT ADHD. (There! I put it in all caps. Will it stick this time?) I wouldn't be surprised if there is a bit of ODD (oppositional defiant disorder) in there too.

It's not necessarily a bad thing, it depends on what you're trying to do. If you're required to sit and read ... or pay close attention to something boring ... it will make life difficult. If you're in the go-go world of television or high finance, it's a good fit.

It's great if you're running for office. Not so great if you need to be an administrator. Ideally, Trump should have a Chief of Staff who can follow up on all those boring details.

Why Trump Suddenly Thinks Picking J.D. Vance Was a Mistake

https://newrepublic.com/post/184106/trump-picking-jd-vance-mistake-bid
en-kamala-harris

Trump campaign officials acknowledged that Trump selected the inexperienced Vance, charged with all his techno-authoritarian ideas, to boost support among their own base, not extend a hand to swing voters, according to The Atlantic. Vance was a symbol of the Trump team’s assuredness that they would win in 2024. Come Sunday, that assuredness appears to be shrinking.

“Most striking thing I heard from Trump allies yesterday was the second-guessing of JD Vance—a selection, they acknowledged, that was [born] of cockiness, meant to run up margins with the base in a blowout rather than persuade swing voters in a nail-biter,” Atlantic staff writer Tim Alberta, who had written the piece about the panicking Trump campaign, posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Trump decried Biden’s decision to drop out in a post on Truth Social, writing that his team would have to “start all over again” and asking to be reimbursed for the cost.

Well, I haven't heard THIS before!
Quote:

Did Biden Quit?

Given the headlines which say he did you might wonder why I ask if Biden has quit his attempt to get reelected.

But look at 'his' rather weird letter which was distributed via the Joe Biden campaign X/Twitter account.

There is no official letterhead. The formulations are obviously not by Joe Biden and the signature looks canned.

I doubt this Politico account which claims that Biden posted the letter all by himself:

Steve Ricchetti, who’s been with Biden since his days in the Senate, drove to see the president at his house on the Delaware shore on Friday.
...
In addition to presenting new concerns from lawmakers and updates on a fundraising operation that had slowed considerably, they carried the campaign’s own polls, which came back this week and showed his path to victory in November was gone ...
...
The only other people with Biden in the residence when he arose Sunday were first lady Jill Biden and two other trusted aides: deputy chief of staff Annie Tomasini and assistant to the first lady Anthony Bernal. At 1:45 p.m., he notified a somewhat larger group of close aides that he had decided the night before to end his quest for another term, reading his letter and thanking them for their service. A minute later, before any other campaign and White House staffers could be notified, he posted the historic letter from his campaign account on the social media site X.
https://www.politico.com/news/2024/07/21/why-biden-dropped-out-0017010
6

This says that Ricchetti, Biden's aide, wrote and posted the letter.

Did you notice the Biden drop out letter isn’t on official letterhead?

I’m told by a source that Joe Biden didn’t even write this letter.

Source tells me that Steve Ricchetti, the Counselor to @JoeBiden actually wrote the letter and Biden Senior Advisor and campaign chair Mike Donilon was present as a witness while Ricchetti wrote the letter because Biden is too cognitively damaged to write a letter or comprehend what is going on.

This means the signature is likely forged on the letter as well.
Notice it’s not on official campaign or presidential letterhead.
That means it’s not legitimate.
@TheDemocrats are pretending to be Joe Biden whose corpse is literally rotting away inside the White House.

Besides abortion, Trump also lies about murder:

TRUMP, referring to Biden: “He’s the one that killed people with a bad border and flooding hundreds of thousands of people dying and also killing our citizens when they come in.”

THE FACTS: A mass influx of migrants coming into the U.S. illegally across the southern border has led to a number of false and misleading claims by Trump. For example, he regularly claims other countries are emptying their prisons and mental institutions to send to the U.S. There is no evidence to support that.

Trump has also argued the influx of immigrants is causing a crime surge in the U.S., although statistics actually show violent crime is on the way down.

There have been recent high-profile and heinous crimes allegedly committed by people in the country illegally. But FBI statistics do not separate out crimes by the immigration status of the assailant, nor is there any evidence of a spike in crime perpetrated by migrants, either along the U.S.-Mexico border or in cities seeing the greatest influx of migrants, like New York. Studies have found that people living in the country illegally are less likely than native-born Americans to have been arrested for violent, drug and property crimes. For more than a century, critics of immigration have sought to link new arrivals to crime. In 1931, the Wickersham Commission did not find any evidence supporting a connection between immigration and increased crime, and many studies since then have reached similar conclusions.

Texas is the only state that tracks crimes by immigration status. A 2020 study published by the National Academy of Sciences found “considerably lower felony arrest rates” among people in the United States illegally than legal immigrants or native-born.

I know he's lied about everything from the economy to the southern border to stuff as trivial as having driven an 18-wheeler and how Beau died. The guy can't talk without lying!

Besides lying about abortion and murder, Trump lies about taxes and jobs:

Trump: "They want to raise your taxes four times. Think of it.... This is the only administration that said we’re going to raise your taxes by four times what you’re paying now. And people are supposed to vote for them?"

This bears no relation to reality. Nobody has any plans to quadruple taxes on anyone, or anything even close to that.

Trump: "Americans are being squeezed out of the labor force and their jobs are taken. By the way, you know who’s taking the jobs, the jobs that are created? One hundred and seven percent of those jobs are taken by illegal aliens."

When Joe Biden took office the employment level of native-born workers was 123 million. Today it's 131 million. That's an increase in the employment rate from 56.5% to 59.4%.

What the hell is Donald Trump talking about?

No. Trump didn't lie about abortion. That IS something that idiot Virginia governor Ralph Northam said because he's an idiot and apparently didn't realize that there would be people outside of his echo chamber listening to it.

JD Vance, now former President Donald Trump's running mate, once speculated in a 2016 message to a former college roommate that Trump could end up being "America's Hitler."

Vance had also written that year that Trump was "unfit" to be president, called him an "idiot," and described him as "cultural heroin."

At the time, Trump was running for the presidency for the first time.

Josh McLaurin, Vance's former roommate at Yale and now a Democratic state senator in Georgia, sat on the "America's Hitler" message for years before deciding to publish it in 2022, shortly after Trump endorsed Vance's Senate run.

In an interview with Business Insider, McLaurin said he released screenshots of the message to expose Vance's "hypocrisy" and the "gross inconsistencies" in his political career.

Now, the message, which also speculated that Trump could be a "cynical asshole like Nixon," is being used to highlight Vance's dramatic journey from "Never Trump" to loyal ally and running mate.

Tom Nichols wrote:

I approached Trump’s speech with genuine curiosity. I was for most of my life a working political scientist, and I have written speeches for politicians; I think I know a good one when I see one. So I watched last night to see if Trump, tamed by a brush with death, would strike a new tone or, at the very least, try to make peace with one of his most hated enemies: the teleprompter.

No chance. To be fair, some people who watched the speech thought that the first 10 minutes or so, in which Trump recounted being injured, were good, even thoughtful. I thought they were terrible; although Trump and his people have emphasized Trump’s defiance in the moment after he was hurt, his blow-by-blow account of the incident came across to me as creepy and solipsistic rather than brave.

Contrast that with Ronald Reagan, the previous president injured in an attempt on his life. Karen Tumulty of The Washington Post reminded us today that Reagan appeared before Congress a month after he was nearly killed. (His injuries were severe and life-threatening.) Reagan was on the Hill to talk about the economy, but he started by thanking the country for its prayers and good wishes, noting a cute letter he got from a child while he was in the hospital, and paying tribute to the people injured alongside him. This digression took all of four paragraphs, a matter of a few minutes. “Now, let’s talk about getting spending and inflation under control and cutting your tax rates,” he then said.

Trump, however, droned on about how much the human ear can bleed, while the screens behind him showed huge pictures of blood on his face. He then went over to the equipment owned by Corey Comperatore, the volunteer firefighter killed in the attack, and kissed the helmet. Some in the crowd may have loved it, but I prefer a bit more stoicism in national leaders; I’ve always thought that Trump’s penchant for hugging and kissing flags was weird, and planting a kiss on the headgear of a dead man was even weirder.

And then things really went off the rails. If you didn’t sit through it, I can’t blame you; it was the longest presidential-nomination-acceptance speech on record.

Donald Trump Full Acceptance Speech at 2024 Republican National Convention

Basking in the friendliest audience he will ever find on this planet, Trump couldn’t help himself. He was supposed to be like a band at a concert doing a tight set, playing some favorites for the loyal fans, introducing a little new material, and gaining a wider audience. Instead, he blew the chance and ran overtime as he noodled, improvised, and even mangled some of his classics.

The speech wasn’t written that way, of course, but Trump can’t stick to a script. You can always tell when Trump is trying to read the teleprompter: His shoulders tense up, he cocks his head and squints, and he rushes through words he has clearly never seen before. It doesn’t help that Trump’s writers stuff his speeches with baroque constructions that are supposed to be soaring and majestic but that always end up sounding more like dollar-store Churchill imitations. Trump struggles with these complex sentences, and then he abandons them—and that is when the real Trump comes out, in all his whiny and aggrieved glory.

I do not have the space (or the endurance) to relive those moments with you, but they were the ramblings of a man who has serious psychological problems. All of it was on display last night: rage, paranoia, pettiness, desolating selfishness.

I’m always sorry to leave readers with these sorts of observations just before a weekend, but much of the media response to Biden’s troubles and Trump’s madness has been mired in equivalences that obscure what’s happening to both men, and what’s at stake for the nation. (As I was writing this, for example, a Washington Post newsletter arrived in my inbox and told me that the GOP had just wrapped up “an energized, focused convention.” That’s an interesting description of a Republican gathering that featured a sex worker, Hulk Hogan, and a spaced-out Trump.)

Yes, Biden is old, and he’s having trouble communicating. The people expressing serious concerns about him have good reason to worry about both his health and his ability to defeat Trump. He might be out of the race by next week. But Trump is mentally and emotionally unwell. He and his valet, J. D. Vance, are not going anywhere. The real tragedy is that, in a serious country, Biden might step down without incident, and a normal race would continue, because decent people would have banished Trump from the public square long ago.

Has anyone seen The Silence of the Lambs? The late, great Hannibal Lecter. He’d love to have you for dinner. That’s insane asylums. They’re emptying out their insane asylums. And terrorists at numbers that we’ve never seen before. Bad things are going to happen.”

Another:

“In Venezuela, Caracas, high crime, high crime. Caracas, Venezuela, really a dangerous place. But not anymore, because in Venezuela, crime is down 72 percent. In fact, if they would ever in this election, I hate to even say that, we will have our next Republican convention in Venezuela because it will be safe. Our cities, our cities will be so unsafe, we won’t be able—we will not be able to have it there.”
