I had to check the latest news to make sure that it wasn't a joke.

It's too bad that he died. I never watched "Friends" ... don't think I even saw a single episode ... but from what I saw of Perry is another show many years later, I thought he was a good actor and for some reason I thought he looked... sad. It's strange to me that someone who appears to have everything feels they have nothing worth living for.

Matthew Perry’s foreshadowed death:

Perry characterized himself as a ready-made, just-add-water addict: an alcoholic with his first drink at the age of 14, and hooked on painkillers with his first pill, prescribed after a jetski accident.

The world might be shocked at his untimely death, but Perry knew that his addiction was going to kill him; he told us in print a year ago, in a book that reached six figures in sales. Indeed, he wrote, his most surprising takeaway was that it hadn’t already.

I'm not sure it works that way, I think if its in a book then info is already out there and in public, maybe too late to cover it up

I had addict issues. I'm still alive.

There are plenty of alcoholics and drug addicts in the world who function and even overcome their addictions.

I'm not saying he didn't kill himself or accidentally overdose. I'm just saying that if I were charged with investigating the death I'd look into his financial situation and who stood to gain the most from his death. I'd also investigate his wife/ex-wife/girlfriend/fiancee or whatever relationships he had to see if maybe somebody had a grotch against him and would be happy if he were dead. Did he even have any money left? Who knows? A lot of these celebrity types mismanage their money and end up broke after their star faded. Maybe there was no financial motivation and he was working at the local WalMart?

I'm not even delving into any political conspiracy theory stuff here. I don't know anything about the guy except that he was in Friends, a few romcom movies from the late 90's/early 2000's that I never would have watched and he voiced Benny in Fallout: New Vegas. I didn't even know he was linked at all to Trudeau, but now that I do know that I'm still not insinuating that has anything to do with his death. The guy was a non-entity on social media as far as I know. I never recall hearing a single opinion out of him good or bad, political or non-political.

I just wouldn't automatically assume that he killed himself just because he liked to drink and do drugs.

And the mere fact that everybody in this thread is jumping to that conclusion just reaffirms my point that if somebody were to gain from his death in any way, they knew full well that the general consensus would be that he just killed himself and they'd get away with it as long as they didn't totally screw up the scene of the crime is all.

Too many pills and booze, warm water = drop in blood pressure and fainting or unconsciousness and accidental drowning. I'm sure they'll do a tox screen and check alcohol and drug levels on autopsy, and look for water in his lungs. Probably the only question might be whether this was accidental or suicide.

No wonder he looked sad. He also looked beat up by life, much older than his age. There are so many reasons for addiction. Some people are self-medicating for ADHD or bipolar disorder or endogenous depression or anxiety. Much is situational. Some addicts just really lack dopamine. But there are so many innovative treatments for addiction- even ketamine or magic mushrooms - why anyone with his access to resources would remain addicted ...

Also, he had no spouse or children. I wonder if he had any close friends at all.

Matthew Perry died from the acute effects of the anesthetic ketamine, according to the results of an autopsy on the 54-year-old “Friends” actor released Friday.

I dunno. I don't hang with celebrities, but Ketamine isn't exactly the recreational drug of choice.

Doesn't sound accidental to me.

Matthew Perry wrote:

"Ketamine was a very popular street drug in the 1980s. There is a synthetic form of it now, and it's used for two reasons: to ease pain and help with depression," he wrote. "Has my name written all over it — they might as well have called it 'Matty.'"

He described the drug as "a giant exhale" and explained that the staff at the facility would administer it via a drip while he was blindfolded and listening to music.

Perry recalled that he would often "dissociate" during the infusions, but he was also consumed by thoughts of death.

"I often thought that I was dying during that hour," he wrote. "Oh, I thought, this is what happens when you die. Yet I would continually sign up for this shit because it was something different, and anything different is good."

"Taking K is like being hit in the head with a giant happy shovel. But the hangover was rough and outweighed the shovel. Ketamine was not for me," he added.

Even though he appeared to distance himself from the drug in the book, according to the toxicology report from the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office, Perry continued to get ketamine infusions after his stay in Switzerland.

Perry's last such treatment, it said, was a week and a half before his death, meaning the ketamine found in his system could not have been from his last treatment.

A 2022 interview with ABC News' Diane Sawyer revealed the "Friends" actor attended rehab at least 15 times, detoxed 65 times, and went to 6,000 AA meetings.

In his memoir, "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing," Perry wrote that his addiction stemmed from a "lifetime of feeling abandoned" and a "desperate need for love."

Perry told People he decided to open up about his struggles in the hopes it would help others.

Sounds to me like he had a major neurochemical imbalance. Like there are some people who are bipolar and others are anxiety-ridden and others are schizo and others have Parkinson's.

I wonder if something like amantadine would have helped.

Most people are somewhere in the middle-ish between GABA and dopamine and acetylcholine and adrenaline and so forth ... and then there are people at the ends of those bell curves who struggle their whole lives. Some day they'll figure all that out and be able to help. But obviously not there yet.

That's a bummer...

In my entire life, I had only ever been "exposed" to Ketamine at a pregame in downtown Chicago before we went to a club. One of my old high school friends I hadn't seen in a while was cooking up some "Special K" on the stove, and very obviously he and a few of the girls there were already "enjoying" it before I arrived.

I didn't know what it was, and I didn't bother asking. I wanted nothing to do with it. It wasn't until years later I even heard about Ketamine and knew what they were doing that night.

To me it didn't seem all that much different than when another guy I knew asked me if I wanted to "get wet". Apparently he had smoked a joint that was dipped in embalming fluid. He sat there staring into space for a few hours barely moving or talking to anyone. Didn't look like a lot of fun to me.

I had enuf problems in junior high and HS ... family probs, emotional probs .... somehow, drugs just seemed like an additonal problem that I didn't want to deal with. Never smoked cigs (altho since both parents smoked a lot I had more than my share of secondhand!). Tried MJ once, didn't like it. Booze just made me sleepy, so I didn't even drink on college altho I do drink a bit now even tho I shouldn't bc ... cancer.

On a med now for neuropathy, but it is also a pain reliever, tranquilizer and anticonvulsant all in one. Not narcotic and not a benzodiazepine so not addictive. Once they tease out those neurochemical pathways they can can make some good (effective, safe) stuff. I hope they continue to work on that bc right now, for a lot of conditions, they're hitting the brain with chemical sledgehammers.

Hubby had a guy working for him. Real nice guy, but always depressed. He self-medicated with MDMA. I tried telling him he might be burning out his serotonin receptors, but I guess the immediate relief he got was worth the distant potential risk. Eventually he quit his job, lived in his camper, moved out to the desert, and we lost track of him. I hope he found some peace there.

Matthew Perry’s final days were a mix of nicotine lollipops, ketamine and testosterone shots that left him ‘angry and mean’

The report, obtained by Page Six on Friday, revealed that a female friend of the actor said he was “angry and mean” in the weeks before his death because he had been taking testosterone shots.

The eye-opening report noted that aside from a lethal amount of ketamine mixed with the opioid-like drug buprenorphine, which is used to alleviate pain and help with addiction to opioids, Perry had been taking Tammoxifen to lose weight, antidiabetic medication and nicotine lollipops. His live-in assistant said he had been smoking about two packs of cigarettes per day.

“It is more likely this was recreational ketamine use,” Dr. Bankole Johnson, one of the top neuroscientists and physicians in the world, told Page Six exclusively Friday.

“It would be questionable medicine to provide ketamine to someone also using buprenorphinea true recipe for disaster.

Sounds like he was on a runaway train, and heading for a cliff.

I used to think that, with the right treatment and support, you could get anyone to quit an addiction. Until I read a story about a politician's daughter who was an alcoholic. So, for context, this was one of those northern central states, Minnesota maybe.

The article detailed the treatments the parents could convince their daughter into. I dont recall what they all were, but IIRC it was over a dozen. Drying out. AA. Alternate drugs. Antabuse. Psychotherapy. Prayer. The parents' fear for their daughter was palpable, and there was never a hint that they were anything but loving parents desperate to find a cure before she killed herself, bc it was pretty clear where she was heading. But she always found a way back to booze and drank until she blacked out. Eventually, at a young age, she froze to death in a snowbank after having guzzled booze in a nearby bar.

For most people, addiction is a response to stress, a reaction to stressful conditions, inability to improve circumstances, and high internal stress. Self-medicating. That's why addiction goes up as unemployment increases.

But like some people are born with the seeds of schizophrenia, I'm beginning to think that some people have an inherent flaw in their neurochemistry that makes them born addicts. From what I read, Matt Perry was a troubled kid and started getting high from a very young age. It seems to me he spent a lot of time trying to escape himself, and he finally did.

You can't help somebody who isn't ready to help themselves. Nobody should feel guilty that they didn't do enough after somebody dies from their addictions. (If they're going to feel any guilt, it should be for whatever they did or didn't do to contribute to the addiction in the first place).

My drinking problem almost killed me, and that's not hyperbole. And for many years I let that addiction run my life into the ground and destroy almost anything that mattered in my life. Hearing that story about the politician's daughter, I should consider myself lucky that the two times I woke up in strange places were not when it was freezing cold outside.

To this day there are physical problems and relationships that can never be mended, but all you can do if you manage to overcome the addiction is to realize this and do the best you can with what you still have... and hopefully learn to appreciate that a lot more than you did before the addiction.

Nobody was going to save that politician's daughter, and nobody was going to save Matthew Perry.

Once you've gotten to the point in an addiction where you've completely given up any hope and you don't get any joy out of anything while you're sober, I really don't see any way out of that pit you've dug for yourself. Programs and/or drugs won't work. If anything, they may be a temporary suspension of the fall into the void, but once you've got nothing to live for outside of the addiction it will always call you back.

Fortunately for me, I still managed to have hope and a desire to live with an ability to still find pleasure in activities outside of my addiction. Otherwise, I would have died a long time ago.

8 years sober without self-help books or 12-step programs next month. I just managed to somehow turn it all off like a light switch.

Nobody was going to help me, no matter how hard they tried. I just happened to finally be ready to get better.

You brought a lot of laughs and joy to people's lives, Matthew. I'm sorry that you never figured out how to do that for yourself along the way.

Matthew Perry’s Autopsy Findings Spur A Renewed Joint Investigation by LAPD and DEA

Five months after the initial investigation and nearly seven months after Perry’s death, the investigation is ostensibly focusing on how much ketamine was in his system and how it may have been obtained. In addition to the LAPD, with the assistance of the DEA, the United States Postal Inspection Service is also involved in investigating the circumstances surrounding the actor’s death.

In January, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that its investigation into Perry’s death had concluded, and the Los Angeles County Medical-Examiner-Coroner’s website listed the case status for Perry’s death as “closed.”

6ix and Trump have spent their lives being piggish and nobody will force them to behave better. 6ix won't stop smoking and Trump won't start paying his taxes and that's their way until death. Matthew Perry did a fine demonstration for 6ix and Trump of how death terminates the behavior of people who are pigheaded about their rights to do wrong.

Multiple people have been charged in connection with the accidental overdose death of actor Matthew Perry, law enforcement sources told NBC News on Thursday.

It’s not uncommon for law enforcement to investigate — and in some cases bring charges against — the people who supplied the drugs that caused a high-profile death.

After the death of Michael Jackson in 2009, his private physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for providing the singer with a fatal dose of powerful drugs. More recently, federal prosecutors in New York brought charges against four men who supplied actor Michael K. Williams with the fentanyl-laced heroin that killed him in 2021.

Every death can be treated like a homicide, but except for celebrities the deaths are usually not. If law enforcers want to make a case for the benefit of the law enforcers, all they need do is ask questions such as: Who sold the suicide victim the bullets? Whose guns were used? Arrest them! They could be charged with assisting murder or suicide. Who delivered the drugs to the celebrities? Who manufactured the Oxycontin? Charge them with murder or sue them for damages.

In 2022, 107,941 drug overdose deaths occurred, but there wasn't 107,941 people arrested for the deaths because nobody cares unless law enforcement feels it will benefit the enforcers by arresting somebody for killing a celebrity.

There are 480,000 deaths annually from tobacco but tobacco farmers are not being arrested for supplying the drug because, hey, what good does that do the law enforcers? Arresting a farmer would just make people mad at the police. Smokers are committing suicide and Matthew Perry committed suicide, but the suppliers of the two different drugs are treated very differently by the police.

There is black man I know, Troy, who I call to his face a Trumptard. Calling him that irritates the hell out of him because he hates Trump for racist reasons. But Troy has ALL the character defects of a Trumptard except the love of Trump.

Troy's sister, daughters and wife are successful Americans because they don't live like Trumptards. Troy is divorced and it is no surprise why: he cheated on his wife constantly. Troy had a job at ZXP, starting in January, which he lost after two months because he acted like a Trumptard around the Spanish-speaking employees. The same stupid opinions I hear from Trumptards are the opinions Troy has. Living and working around Trumptards caused Troy to think and act like a Trumptard, without ever loving Trump. Troy is greedy, selfish, foolish, lacking self-control, non-working, opinionated, which is exactly like Matthew Perry or Trump or 6ixStringJack.

Troy complains constantly that the government is not responding fast enough to his needs, just like a Trumptard would. Troy has got a problem with alcohol, painkillers and tobacco, just like a Trumptard would. Troy is constantly working on his home, proud of it, just like a 6ixStringJack lives. Troy gets by on a small amount of money, just like 6ixStringJack does because Troy doesn't have any income.

The main difference between Troy or Matthew Perry and a full blood Trumptard like 6ixStringJack is that Troy and Matthew Perry don't love Trump. I would not been surprised if Matthew Perry eventually came around to voting for Trump, secretly, because Perry has ALL the defective ways of thinking and acting that Trumptards and Trump have. The only thing Perry lacked was a love of Trump, mainly because the culture of Hollywood also lacks a love of Trump.

The Friends actor died in a hot tub after being injected with ketamine. But the story appears to be more complex than that.

By Joel Zivot and Brian Malchy | Aug 20, 2024, 1:19 PM

https://slate.com/technology/2024/08/matthew-perry-death-ketamine-plas
encia-friends-actor.html

The pharmacological market is dominated by two classes of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. What is notable about these drugs is their relative ineffectiveness in improving depression symptoms. Worse, they fail to block suicidal ideation and may even increase the risk of suicide. Ketamine is not associated with increased suicidality and is often used in emergency departments on individuals who have attempted suicide or have intense suicidal urges.

Good psychiatrists know when to use antidepressants that will strongly predict success. Melancholic signs predict a higher likelihood of success. The signal-to-noise problem of antidepressant failure is that they are wrongly used for unhappiness or the trauma of existence. Unhappiness is a common and serious concern, but an SSRI or SNRI will not help a patient who is merely unhappy. True medical depression is much less common. The high failure rate of antidepressants may reflect overprescribing and the subsequent medicalization of suffering.

For treatment-resistant depression, doctors may turn to something stronger. Ketamine is structurally like phencyclidine, also known as the street drug angel dust, among many other names, and shares that drug’s ability to cause hallucinations and distorted perceptions. Sometimes, these hallucinations are pleasing and generate feelings of profound insight. At other times, these hallucinations are terrifying—known in the medical lexicon as emergence delirium. Up to 55 percent of patients administered ketamine experience an emergence phenomenon that closely mimics schizophrenia and increases their risk of injury.

Finding the sweet spot between terror and bliss is too irresistible for some users. Case reports of recreational ketamine use by physicians exist. Chronic users also develop a significant tolerance to ketamine without prominent symptoms of physical withdrawal, and cyclical use of very high doses is observed. By accounts, Perry struggled progressively with tolerance, and he sought out ever-increasing dosage in pursuit of the desired effect.

Suffering from ketamine tolerance, Perry asked for increasing dosages, but his clinic doctor refused his requests. Perry found Salvador Plasencia, an internist who went by the nickname “Dr. P.” Plasencia partnered with another physician, named Mark Chavez, who had experience with ketamine. Together, they considered how much to charge Perry to supply him. According to a court-filed document, text messages from Plasencia to Chavez read, “I wonder how much this moron will pay” and “Let’s find out.” . . .

In a report dated Dec. 15, 2023, from the County of Los Angeles Department of the Medical Examiner, Perry’s cause of death was listed as the acute effects of ketamine. This doesn’t seem right. Listed contributing factors include drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine, a drug used to treat opioid use disorder. If Perry had received ketamine while lying on dry land, he might not have died. Ketamine is not toxic in the way other drugs might be. Opioids cause death because, in an overdose, people stop breathing and they don’t know it. The cause of death is the lack of oxygen.

Ketamine is not an opioid. Some drugs directly cause the heart to stop, and in that case, the drug is more the proximate cause. Even in large and repeated dosages, and all things being equal, ketamine may be harmful, but it’s not predictably deadly on its own. When a critically ill person needs anesthesia, ketamine is commonly chosen because it doesn’t kill. The lack of apparent and established ketamine lethal toxicity may have reduced the concerns of Plasencia and Chavez . This, however, should not clear them of medical wrongdoing. Ketamine is typically administered under the direct supervision of medical professionals because of its strong effects. Perry was, according to the Times’ reading of court papers, injected by his assistant, then left alone.

After the Department of Justice charged the doctors with several drug-related charges, Chavez entered a plea agreement, and Plasencia pleaded not guilty. “Ultimately, Dr. Plasencia was operating with what he thought were the best of medical intentions,” his attorney has said. Nobody has yet been charged with negligence, either civil or criminal, in Perry’s death. However, that could still be coming. . . .

At the core of the doctor–patient relationship is the duty on the part of the physician to act in the patient’s best interest. Sometimes, a patient makes an unconventional choice, but if the patient is competent and the request is fundamentally reasonable, the physician is duty-bound to comply. Such a request needs no financial sweetening on the part of the patient to get the doctor to agree, nor should the patient’s celebrity sway decision-making. When a patient is powerful, addled by illness, and the request is unreasonable, an offer of money to that physician (or the fact that a patient can be charged a high price) makes that request no more compelling. In that case, the physician’s duty is clear: Turn down the money and tell the patient no.

They mocked Matthew Perry as 'Chandler' and a 'moron.' - Los Angeles Times

By Hannah Fry, Richard Winton | August 28, 2024

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-08-28/they-called-him-ch
andler-and-a-moron-matthew-perry-was-exploited-before-his-death-feds-say

In the month before Mathew Perry’s death, a doctor the actor contacted to acquire ketamine called him a “moron” in a text message, according to federal prosecutors.

A dealer who authorities say supplied the drug to Perry referred to him as “Chandler” — the sarcastic yet sweet-natured character he played on the hit television show “Friends,” court documents say.

Federal authorities have depicted in court filings and public statements a scheme in which medical professionals and street dealers exploited Perry, who had been open about his years-long struggle with addiction, to enrich themselves.

Five people — two doctors, an alleged drug dealer known as “Ketamine Queen,” a former film director and Perry’s live-in assistant — have been charged in a conspiracy to distribute ketamine, an anesthetic, to the actor.

Prosecutors laid out a criminal case against the defendants. But experts familiar with addiction treatment say the picture of drug use alleged in court papers followed an all too common path: An addict is desperate for a fix and those supplying the drug are happy to maintain the business.

“People can be victimized because they are really highly motivated to seek that substance and nothing else is going to satisfy them,” said Jessica Borelli, a professor of psychological science at UC Irvine.

Perry was found dead in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home on Oct. 28. Authorities later determined he had died from acute effects of ketamine.

U.S. Atty. Martin Estrada said during a news conference this month that those charged in the case “cared more about profiting off of Mr. Perry than caring for his well-being.”

“Drug dealers selling dangerous substances are gambling with other people’s lives over greed,” he said.

Federal prosecutors said Perry started ketamine therapy at a local clinic, where he had sought treatment for depression and anxiety. Ketamine use for depression is a relatively new therapy, but some medical professionals who spoke to The Times say it shows promising results when administered correctly.

While the most frequently used antidepressants affect serotonin, dopamine and other neurochemicals in the brain, ketamine works on the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) system and can be helpful for treatment-resistant depression. Still, there are risks and the potential for addiction to the powerful drug, said Dr. Robert McCarron, a professor of psychiatry and associate dean of medical education at UC Irvine.

“Ketamine has the potential to harm someone or kill someone if not monitored carefully and used in an approved therapeutic way,” McCarron said, adding that Perry likely didn’t know that taking additional amounts of ketamine outside of therapy could be fatal.

“He didn’t go to medical school. He probably figured it made him feel good and lowered his depression so maybe more was better,” McCarron said.

The American Society of Ketamine Physicians, Psychotherapists & Practitioners has raised concerns about whether Perry was a good candidate for ketamine treatment at all.

“In order to safely continue ketamine infusions with his history of substance abuse, his treatment plan would needed to have been implemented by someone highly knowledgeable and experienced with ketamine as one part of an overall substance abuse treatment program,” the organization said in a statement.

Federal authorities say Perry became addicted to the powerful drug, and when clinic doctors refused to increase his dosage, the actor turned to Salvador Plasencia, an internist who went by the nickname “Dr. P.”

Federal prosecutors allege that Perry’s live-in assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, worked with two doctors — Mark Chavez and Plasencia — and drug dealers Jasveen Sangha and Erik Fleming to obtain thousands of dollars’ worth of ketamine for Perry in the month before his death.

Sangha and Plasencia have both pleaded not guilty. Their attorneys could not be reached for comment. Iwamasa pleaded guilty this month to a count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine causing death. Fleming pleaded guilty this month to a count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine and a count of distribution of ketamine resulting in death. Chavez has agreed to plead guilty to a count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine, according to court records.

In text messages with Chavez, who had experience with ketamine, Plasencia pondered how much to charge Perry for the drug, writing in a text message: “I wonder how much this moron will pay” and “lets find out,” according to an indictment filed in court.

Plasencia also wrote in messages to Chavez that he didn’t want Perry to “look elsewhere” for his ketamine supply. According to the indictment, Plasencia wrote that he wanted to be “his go to.”

In total, the doctors distributed 20 vials of ketamine to Perry for $55,000 in cash, charging him $2,000 for a vial that cost Chavez $12, authorities said.

“Matthew Perry’s journey began with unscrupulous doctors who abused their position of trust because they saw him as a payday and it ended with street dealers who sold him ketamine in unmarked vials,” U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Administrator Anne Milgram said during a news conference this month. “The desperation that led Perry to these individuals was not met with help, as it should have been from the doctors, but instead it was met with exploitation.”

By mid-October, Perry and his assistant had been communicating with Fleming — an acquaintance of the actor’s — who had a source that could provide the drugs at a lower cost.

Fleming texted Perry that he had “a bunch of the K in liquid,” which he would sell at a “good price” and a “fair tip” for delivering it, according to a plea agreement Fleming made with prosecutors.

“I wouldn’t do it if there wasn’t a chance of me making some money for doing this,” Fleming told Iwamasa, according to the indictment.

Fleming delivered a sample to Perry’s home for $180 on Oct. 13, according to the indictment. Iwamasa told Fleming the drug “seems good” and asked for more.

When Sangha communicated with Fleming about the sale, she referred to Perry “using the name of a well-known character that [Perry] portrayed in a television series,” according to Fleming’s plea agreement. Law enforcement sources told The Times she called him “Chandler.”

The next day, Fleming arrived at Perry’s home with 25 vials, charging $5,500 and pocketing an additional $500 for coordinating the deal, prosecutors said. While Sangha had quoted Fleming $160 per vial of ketamine, authorities say Fleming charged Perry $220 per vial.

Ten days later, Fleming delivered another 25 vials to the actor’s home along with ketamine lollipops that prosecutors say Sangha threw in as a bonus for the large order, according to the indictment.

In the final days of Perry’s life, court records indicate there were signs the actor’s addiction was spiraling out of control. Iwamasa was injecting the actor with ketamine six to eight times a day, authorities said. The aide had found Perry unconscious at his house on at least two occasions in October, the indictment showed.

In less than a month, Fleming and Sangha sold about 50 vials of the drug to the actor for about $11,000, according to prosecutors.

Experts say it’s not uncommon that someone abusing a drug would spend exorbitant amounts of money to get access to it.

When someone is abusing a drug, their way of processing rewards changes, so “what’s rewarding to most people ceases to be rewarding to people who have a substance use disorder,” said Borelli.

This can lead to people disregarding consequences in their pursuit of the substance, experts said.

“Addiction is like an ironclad compulsion,” said Dr. Michael McDaniel, the medical director of Heartland House in San Diego. “For the person suffering from substance-use disorder, there is practically nothing they can do to not use. So with something like ketamine, where the supplies are pretty strictly controlled and limited, the suffering person would be at the mercy of whoever was supplying them.”

Dr Chavez has admitted one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine.

At Friday's court hearing, bail was set at $50,000 (£38,000) with Mr Chavez ordered to surrender his passport and agree not to continue practising medicine.
