$10M cash withdrawal drove secret probe into whether Trump took money from Egypt

secret-probe-into-whether-trump-took-money-from-egypt
/

Five days before Donald Trump became president in January 2017, a manager at a bank branch in Cairo received an unusual letter from an organization linked to the Egyptian intelligence service. It asked the bank to “kindly withdraw” nearly $10 million from the organization’s account — all in cash.

Inside the state-run National Bank of Egypt, employees were soon busy placing bundles of $100 bills into two large bags, according to records from the bank. Four men arrived and carried away the bags, which U.S. officials later described in sealed court filings as weighing a combined 200 pounds and containing what was then a sizable share of Egypt’s reserve of U.S. currency.

Federal investigators learned of the withdrawal, which has not been previously reported, early in 2019. The discovery intensified a secret criminal investigation that had begun two years earlier with classified U.S. intelligence indicating that Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi sought to give Trump $10 million to boost his 2016 presidential campaign, a Washington Post investigation has found.

Since receiving the intelligence about Sisi, the Justice Department had been examining whether money moved from Cairo to Trump, potentially violating federal law that bans U.S. candidates from taking foreign funds. Investigators had also sought to learn if money from Sisi might have factored into Trump’s decision in the final days of his run for the White House to inject his campaign with $10 million of his own money.

Those questions, at least in the view of several investigators on the case, would never be answered, The Post found.

Within months of learning of the withdrawal, prosecutors and FBI agents were blocked by top Justice Department officials from obtaining bank records they believed might hold critical evidence, according to interviews with people familiar with the case as well as documents and contemporaneous notes of the investigation. The case ground to a halt by the fall of 2019 as Trump’s then-attorney general, William P. Barr, raised doubts about whether there was sufficient evidence to continue the probe of Trump.

The behind-the-scenes drama played out during an especially tense time for the Justice Department, with Trump accusing the agency of pursuing a politically biased “witch hunt” against him in its probe of Russian election interference, his appointees seeking to rein in investigators they saw as partisan, and some career supervisors growing wary of plunging the agency into yet another legal battle with the president.

Barr directed Jessie Liu, the Trump-appointed U.S. attorney in D.C., to personally examine the classified intelligence to evaluate if further investigation was warranted. Barr later instructed FBI Director Christopher A. Wray to impose “adult supervision” on FBI agents Barr described as “hell-bent” on pursuing Trump’s records, according to people familiar with the exchange. It is unclear what if any actions Wray, who was also appointed by Trump, took in response.

In June of 2020, the prosecutor Barr appointed to take over the office leading the case closed the probe, citing “a lack of sufficient evidence to prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt.”

That conclusion belied the months of internal disagreements over whether investigators had been allowed to go far enough in seeking that evidence.

“Every American should be concerned about how this case ended,” said one of the people who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the internal dissension. “The Justice Department is supposed to follow evidence wherever it leads — it does so all the time to determine if a crime occurred or not.”

Is the United States in self-destruct mode?

The crisis is in the Constitution.

by Sean Illing | Aug 3, 2024, 6:00 AM CDT

https://www.vox.com/the-gray-area/364555/united-states-constitution-cr
isis-democracy

Here’s a strange question: What if the greatest threat to the United States is our own Constitution?

Even if you think the American Constitution is the most brilliant political document in human history (and it arguably is), it was written in the late 18th century, which means it’s a product of a very different world than the one we currently inhabit.

America was an agrarian slave society at the time of the founding. The citizenry was confined to white, property-owning males. People lived in small, self-contained communities. All of these anachronisms are reflected in the Constitution, not just in the treatment of race but in the structure of the government itself. The Electoral College, the unrepresentative Senate, the Supreme Court — these are all deeply undemocratic institutions and they’re becoming unsustainable in an increasingly polarized society.

We could change the Constitution, of course, but there’s a problem. While the Constitution is open to revision, the truth is that it has become almost impossible to revise. The result is a political system that feels permanently stuck.

Erwin Chemerinsky is the dean of the law school at UC Berkeley and the author of a new book called No Democracy Lasts Forever: How the Constitution Threatens the United States. Chemerinsky’s book makes a pretty convincing case that we’re in trouble if we don’t find a way to seriously reform — or even rewrite — the Constitution.

So I invited him on The Gray Area to talk about how we got here and why he’s not sure there’s any viable path forward. As always, there’s much more in the full podcast, so listen and follow The Gray Area on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pandora, or wherever you find podcasts. New episodes drop every Monday.

This conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

Sean Illing: What are the biggest problems with the Constitution at this moment?

Erwin Chemerinsky: Right now I would say the Electoral College and two senators per state are what pose the greatest threat to democracy. But if you asked me what was the worst choice historically, I’d say it was what the framers did with regard to slavery and race — that has haunted this country from the beginning.

Sean Illing: There is, as you know, a pretty common defense of the anti-democratic features of the Constitution, which goes something like this: Democracy is great but we also need protections from the tyranny of the majority, we need a firewall against all the vulnerabilities of democracy in order to protect it from itself. Do you buy this argument?

Erwin Chemerinsky: Yes and no. The yes is that the Constitution is inherently anti-democratic. The Constitution is meant to limit what the majority can do at any point in time, and I believe in that. I don’t think it should be as difficult to change as the current Constitution, but I accept we should be governed by a document that’s more difficult to change than just any other statute or ordinance. I also believe in checks and balances. I think one of the good things in the Constitution to help prevent tyranny is the diffusion of power among several branches of government.

On the other hand, I don’t think the Electoral College helps to prevent tyranny. I don’t think the Electoral College is in any way a check on democracy. It’s just a terrible way of choosing a president. I don’t think two senators per state has anything to do with protecting our democracy. So my answer is yes, there are features in the Constitution to protect democracy and that’s a good thing, but the things that we’re talking about now, the Electoral College and the Senate, don’t in any way contribute to protecting democracy.

Sean Illing: Is there another advanced liberal democracy anywhere in the world that has equivalent institutions to the Senate and the Electoral College?

Erwin Chemerinsky: They’re unique to the United States. There’s not any other country in the world that has a popular election for its chief executive, in which a person who loses the popular vote can be chosen.

‘It’s just a scam’: The real truth about Trump's no tax on tips or social security pledge

Brendan Duke, Senior Director of Economic Policy at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, joins MSNBC’s Ali Velshi to explain why Donald Trump’s proposed tax cuts on tips and Social Security are the “Trump University of tax plans” that would provide “tax cuts for the wealthy, pennies for low- and middle-income families.”

The Man Behind Project 2025’s Most Radical Plans

By Alec MacGillis | Aug. 1, 1:50 p.m. EDT

https://www.propublica.org/article/project-2025-trump-campaign-heritag
e-foundation-paul-dans

As Donald Trump tried to disavow the politically toxic project, its director, Paul Dans, stepped down. But the plans and massive staffing database remain.

In recent months, Project 2025 has gotten attention for some of the more radical proposals in its policy plan — such as reinstating more stringent rules for the use of the abortion pill mifepristone and abolishing some federal agencies. On the campaign trail, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris made the project the centerpiece of their case against a Trump restoration. Their attacks were so effective that Trump has publicly disavowed the effort (while selecting a running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, who is closely allied with Heritage and Project 2025).

This week, as Project 2025 faced denunciations from the Trump campaign, the project’s director, Paul Dans, stepped down from his role. Trump’s campaign co-managers, Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita, said in a statement that “reports of Project 2025’s demise would be greatly welcomed, and should serve as notice to anyone or any group trying to misrepresent their influence with President Trump and his campaign — it will not end well for you.” For Dans, it was a sudden end — or at least a pause — in a remarkable ascent from obscurity.

But then again, his resignation was at least partly symbolic: The work of Project 2025 is largely done. Under Dans, the project has assembled a database of more than 10,000 names — job candidates vetted for loyalty to Trump’s cause — who will be ready to deploy into federal agencies should he win the 2024 election. Project 2025 has delivered a toolkit, ready for use, to create a second Trump administration that would be decidedly more MAGA than the first.

Donald Moynihan, a public policy professor at Georgetown University, does not expect Trump to fire tens of thousands. Jettisoning just a couple of thousand, to make an example of them, may be enough. “They can fire 1,000 and put their heads on pikes, and then everyone else quickly falls into line,” he told me. “That way you have a terrified bureaucracy that still has institutional knowledge. That’s the more strategic way to use Schedule F, to scare the bejesus out of 49,000 people and force them into line.” Sherk, the author of Schedule F, suggested as much to me. “The notion we’re going to can 50,000 people is just insane,” he said. “Why would you do that? That would kneecap the ability to implement your agenda. You use it to go after bad actors and rank incompetents.”

That would still leave the challenge of finding people to fill the 4,000 slots for appointees and however many hundreds or thousands of openings are created by firings. Many Republicans who served in the first Trump administration are leery of serving in a second. “The last administration was a joke, and they had a real problem recruiting,” a Washington attorney who served in the George W. Bush administration, and who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution against his firm, told me. “Who the hell would jump into this clown car driving toward a cliff? Are people going to come forward, quality people? Not a fucking chance.”

Now We Know Why That Disastrous Trump Event Started So Late
Donald Trump’s interview with the National Association of Black Journalists started more than an hour late.

Donald Trump almost didn’t take the stage at the National Association of Black Journalists conference earlier this week because he was terrified of being fact-checked.

The former president appeared on stage Wednesday more than an hour late to take part in a conversation moderated by ABC News’s senior congressional correspondent Rachel Scott, Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner, and Semafor’s political reporter Kadia Goba.

Trump quickly complained about the delayed start, saying it had taken half an hour for the NABJ to get their sound equipment to work. Apparently, he was trying to get ahead of something else.

While there were some audio problems, “the bigger problem was his threat not to take the stage when he had agreed to go on. He did not want to be fact-checked, but we could not let him on the stage without fact-checking,” NABJ president Ken Lemon told Axios in a story published Friday.

The NABJ had arranged for Trump’s interview to be simultaneously fact-checked online in collaboration with Politifact. At one point, Trump’s team requested that the NABJ not post fact-checking to its social media accounts, or allow the moderator to discuss the fact-checking on stage, according to Lemon.

“Our whole team stood our ground,” Lemon told Axios.

At one point, things got desperate. “I was prepared to go on stage to craft a statement, saying he decided not to go on stage because of fact-checking.... [W]e couldn’t compromise on that,” Lemon said.

But as Lemon drafted his statement, Trump finally walked on stage, Lemon said.

Trump is distinctly unwilling to go into hostile audiences, and was left scrambling for a way to back out when he knew his words would be held to account. His team ended up cutting off the event, which was scheduled to last an hour, after just 34 minutes. If his seething response to ABC’s Scott is any indication, Trump can’t take a tough question at all.

What Donald Trump doesn’t understand about race in America

Teresa Wiltz writes:

For most of its history, America decreed that anyone with any African ancestry was Black — and rumors of purported Blackness could derail a career, a marriage, a life. Now, the irony is that some feel comfortable accusing those same people of making up their Blackness altogether — or not being “fully Black” if they come from multiple racial backgrounds.

But the problem with trying to decide who qualifies as Black and who doesn’t is that there are many, many ways to be Black in America, thanks largely to slavery.

I’m Black and I have two Black-identifying parents who also had two Black-identifying parents. You have to go back generations to find the white folks in our family tree, but their existence is there, evident in the texture of our hair, the hue of our skin, the slant of our noses. (And in our 23andMe genetic testing results.) We are the result of centuries of miscegenation, generations of Black biracial people marrying other Black biracial people (and the occasional Native American) again and again and again, descendants of both the enslaved and the enslavers, born perhaps of love, but most certainly, from rape. In the U.S. — but not so much in other countries — that potent gumbo of DNA makes us (happily) Black.

Harris, with her sleek blowout and cafe-au-lait skin, would fit right in at our family reunion. After all, on her Jamaican side, she comes from a very similar genetic soup, also a product of that island’s legacy of slavery. To be Black in the Americas is to be racially mixed, dating back to the earliest Colonial days, when enslaved Africans lived with, worked with, rebelled with and had babies with indentured Europeans and Native Americans.

The longer you’ve been in this country, no matter your racial identity, the more likely you are to be mixed race.

Trump lost the popular vote to Hillary by 3 million votes and to Joe by 7 million. He knows he will probably lose to Kamala by more than 10 million. Rachel says this is why he isn’t campaigning much — he plans to gum up the election and have it thrown to the House of Representatives, where each state gets one vote. So Idaho and Wyoming, which Trump will win, count for as much as California and New York, which he will not.

Trump forgets it’s not 2016 anymore.

By E.J. Dionne Jr.

Trump’s success in 2016, and his ability to retain control over the Republican Party since, have rested on his mastery of oppositional politics and his skill at using abnormal behavior to prove to disaffected voters that he’s no mainstream politician.

Until President Biden withdrew from the contest, both strategies still had juice. The oppositional approach worked when a majority of voters seemed prepared to reject Biden. The president’s approval ratings hovered in the 40 percent range, and even Biden sympathizers worried about his age.

As for Trump’s breaks with customs and norms, it was hard to find a more conventional, system-revering politician than Biden. These were useful virtues for Biden in 2020, when most voters were fed up with Trump’s chaotic presidency and his erratic handling of the pandemic. But by early 2024, memories of what had been exasperating about Trump faded. The 78-year-old’s acrimonious displays made him seem more energetic than Biden, and enough voters were sufficiently angry about high prices and immigration to welcome his spleen.

Enter Harris, 59, who instantly flipped the age issue against Trump. His often-disjointed screeds suddenly felt like the ravings of a grumpy old man, not entertaining breaks from politician-speak. Trump had always fed on the energy of his crowds. “Low energy” is a favorite Trump epithet against his foes. Now Harris has the energy, and her audiences seem positively rapturous.

Harris was not afraid to put aside a decorousness that came naturally to Biden, first elected to the Senate in 1972. She has gone after Trump hard, thrilling her crowds even more. “I know Donald Trump’s type” became a T-shirt-worthy battle cry for Democrats weary of feeling like punching bags. Worst of all, from Trump’s point of view, Harris shoved him out of the lead spot in the campaign news. She was new, and her identity as a biracial woman excited many constituencies, especially younger voters who had been checking out of politics before her arrival.

It’s no wonder, then, that Trump used his appearance before the National Association of Black Journalists last week to go straight after that identity and Harris’s authenticity. “She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage,” Trump said. “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black [and] she became a Black person.”

Of course the statement was everything its critics said it was — racist for starters, and an outright lie, too. Harris has always spoken proudly about both sides of her heritage. But Trump seems to know he must derail Harris’s upward trajectory somehow, and he was desperate to get back into the mix.

The ugly and deceitful attack did a lot of work for him, which is why his campaign has stuck with it in increasingly revolting ways. First, he finally dominated the news again. He reminded voters who might harbor prejudices of Harris’s racial and ethnic background. He sought to sow doubts among Black voters about how Harris thinks of herself. And he raised questions about her genuineness by suggesting — again, it can’t be stressed enough, falsely — that she’ll redefine herself in whatever way might be politically advantageous. The whole thing was intentional, and insidious.

But here is why 2024 may be Trump’s undoing: We have been here for nine long years. When Trump went after Hillary Clinton in 2016, the media didn’t know what to do with him, and Democrats did not know how to respond. Journalists debated for years over whether Trump’s lies should, in fact, be called lies. (Pretty much all outlets finally decided a lie is a lie.) In 2016, Democrats underestimated Trump right to the end. There’s none of that now.

Trump was so novel and such a viewer-magnet that his harangues were often shown in full on cable television. Sometimes, the media preferred showing empty lecterns anticipating Trump’s arrival to broadcasting the words of his foes in either party. And, for a while in 2016, the media occasionally rationalized their decisions by blaming Clinton for not being interesting enough. That’s not happening anymore. Or, at least, not to the same degree, because Trump’s act has grown tired and often boring, as his Republican convention speech showed.

Since election night 2016, the greatest fear in the guild of political analysts has been writing off Trump prematurely again. And, yes, the polls show a tight race. But you can’t explain Harris’s surge or Trump’s distemper unless you acknowledge that the world has not stood still since the showman first came down that escalator. Trump and the media will make a big mistake by fighting and covering the last war.

Russell Vought, a Project 2025 architect, is ready to shock Washington if Trump wins second term

overnment-38fc446832062e40fc2ccad6f3348dfd

Russell Vought sounds like a general marshaling troops for combat when he talks about taming a “woke and weaponized” federal government.

He recently described political opposition as “enemy fire that’s coming over the target,” while urging allies to be “fearless at the point of attack” and calling his policy proposals “battle plans.”

If former President Donald Trump wins a second term in November, Vought may get the opportunity to go on the offensive.

A chief architect of Project 2025 — the controversial conservative blueprint to remake the federal government — Vought is likely to be appointed to a high-ranking post in a second Trump administration. And he’s been drafting a so-far secret “180-Day Transition Playbook” to speed the plan’s implementation to avoid a repeat of the chaotic start that dogged Trump’s first term.

Among the small cadre of Trump advisers who has a mechanic’s understanding of how Washington operates, Vought has advised influential conservative lawmakers on Capitol Hill, held a top post in the Trump White House and later established his own pro-Trump think tank. Now, he’s being mentioned as a candidate to be Trump’s White House chief of staff, one of the most powerful positions in government.

“If we don’t have courage, then we will step away from the battle,” Vought said in June on former Trump aide Steve Bannon’s ‘War Room’ podcast. “But our view is that’s where the country needs us, and we’re not going to save our country without a little confrontation.”

Conservative blueprint to change the government

Led by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, Project 2025 is a detailed 920-page handbook for governing under the next Republican administration. A whirlwind of hard-right ambitions, its proposals range from ousting thousands of civil servants and replacing them with Trump loyalists to reversing the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of medications used in abortions. Democrats for months have been using Project 2025 to hammer Trump and other Republicans, arguing to voters that it represents the former president’s true — and extreme — agenda.

Trump has literally said he wants to purify the blood of the nation by eliminating "vermin," a term he has applied on several occasions to nonwhite immigrants. In a throwback to early 20th-century eugenics and "race science," Trump has expressed pride in his "good German genes" and racial background. Trump and his allies have floated plans for a system of concentration camps aimed at collecting and deporting migrants, refugees and undocumented immigrants. Hitler proposed strikingly similar plans before he enacted eliminationist and genocidal policies aimed at achieving them.

I think Trump is perfect for 6ixStringJack. There couldn't be a politician more congruent with 6ix's awareness of historic facts and moral blossoming in German speaking areas of Europe during the 1930's. History gets a little dicey for those Germans in the 1940's but I won't spoil the movie for 6ix by telling him how it ends in 1945.

In 2016 Dayna Craig, a poet from Belfast, Northern Ireland, published a short bit of verse that might well explain every terrible person you’ve ever known, including Trump.

It’s called “A Narcissist’s Prayer”:

That didn’t happen.

And if it did, it wasn’t that bad.

And if it was, that’s not a big deal.

And if it is, that’s not my fault.

And if it was, I didn’t mean it.

And if I did

You deserved it.

One of the most unexpected and useful insights I’ve gleaned during my years perusing Reddit involves narcissism, especially its seeming pervasiveness and its power to explain the otherwise inexplicable behavior of the most difficult people in public and private life.

The subreddits dedicated to the subject — forums like r/RaisedByNarcissists, r/NarcissisticAbuse, r/NarcissisticSpouses, and r/LifeAfterNarcissism — have given me something of a map for understanding how narcissism shapes society. Thanks to Reddit, I’ve come to rely on this rule of thumb: If someone often has you asking yourself Why are they acting that way?, a big part of the answer might be narcissism.

What is a narcissist? Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a clinically defined mental health condition. Psychiatry’s diagnostic manual, the DSM-5, outlines nine behavioral patterns involving grandiosity, empathy, and a person’s need for admiration, of which a patient must meet at least five for a formal diagnosis of NPD.

Dayna Craig’s “Narcissist’s Prayer” is so often cited on Reddit because it is the perfect shorthand for identifying the narcissist in your life. The poem captures the narcissist’s go-to tactics: There’s the routine denial and defensiveness about their actions; an inability to take responsibility or admit wrongdoing; the incessant effort to manipulate others into believing an alternate version of reality; and, at the root of it, a deep sense that other people don’t matter.

Trump’s attack on Kamala Harris’s blackness was very precisely aimed

It's sort of fascinating to watch The Big Lie unfold in real time. In this case I'm talking about Donald Trump's assertion that Kamala Harris used to identify as Indian and then switched to being Black when it became politically expedient.

Usually there's some small kernel of truth to these kinds of attacks, but this time there isn't even that. It's simply invented out of whole cloth. Harris has always identified as biracial and nothing about that has ever changed.

Despite this, conservatives have eagerly taken up the charge, hoping to repeat it often enough that it sinks in. But why? What's the point?

It's not just because they're afraid to disagree with Trump. Nor is it because Trump's accusation was just a weird flub. It was planned in advance with malice aforethought and it was very deliberately done in front of a Black audience. That's because it was intended to appeal to a longtime obsession of the right: namely that identity politics and accusations of "systemic racism" are just a con job by liberals. Kamala Harris, Trump is implying, is a perfect case. She's really Indian-American but then cynically adopted Blackness so that she could complain about "racist attacks" from conservatives.

This is why a seemingly trivial falsehood is more powerful than it appears. It confirms the widespread view in MAGA world that Harris is just another race hustler out to weaponize her dark skin against whites. In reality, it's white people who have suffered increasing discrimination in recent years, right?

The bizarre RFK Jr. bear incident, briefly explained

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. admitted he dumped a dead bear in New York’s Central Park back in 2014.

In a video Kennedy posted on X on Sunday, he revealed that he’d left a bike and bear carcass in the park, hoping it would appear that a cyclist had killed the bear, and that it would be “amusing.” It’s a bizarre incident that prompted major news coverage at the time — and that spawned a years-long mystery about how the bear even got there. The story was set to become public as part of a long, critical New Yorker profile of Kennedy, which featured the anecdote, and which seemed to have prompted Kennedy to share his side of it.

The bear incident is also only the latest in myriad problematic acts that Kennedy has been implicated in — including spreading medical misinformation and allegations of sexual misconduct. He’s previously made headlines, too, after sharing that a parasitic worm had eaten part of his brain. Collectively, these disclosures have all added to a peculiar persona and haphazard policy positions he’s cultivated.

Despite his antics and controversial stances, Kennedy has managed to hang on to a winnowing base of support that’s attracted to his anti-establishment positions, and that believes he’s the only candidate willing to tell it like it is.

No matter how evil or stupid Signym or 6ixStringJack behave in life (as an example, those two have written "Fuck Ukraine" many times) it's all just insults? Life never bites them back for being inadequate, flawed, not up to standards? Nothing is real with either of them or with Trump, their guide to behavior? So this isn't real, either, according to them and Trump:

I Am Agog at This Investigation Into Whether Trump Took $10 Million from Egypt

Story by Charles P. Pierce

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/i-am-agog-at-this-investigation-i
nto-whether-trump-took-10-million-from-egypt/ar-AA1okwRl

Is this story really going to get pitched down the memory hole until it gets hopelessly tangled in the roots of Yggdrasil, never to be seen or heard from again?

Late Friday, The Washington Post produced a deeply reported story concerning a transfer of $10 million in small bills from the National Bank of Egypt that, through a bizarre chain of custody, wound up in service to the campaign of former president* Donald J. Trump. The whole thing sounds like a Donald Westlake novel—a “request” comes from someone with ties to Egyptian intelligence asking the Egyptian bank to fork over most of the American currency it has on hand. This amounts to filling two large bags with two hundred pounds’ worth of American greenbacks. Then four other guys show up and carry away the bags. With us so far? Good, because it gets really weird now.

The feds got wind of this remarkable episode in banking back in 2019. As it happens, they were already investigating a case from 2016 wherein Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was alleged to be trying to find a way to slip a cool $10 mil to then-candidate Trump. The feds presumed this would not be so that Sisi could outfit his entire army in red ballcaps. From the Post:

Since receiving the intelligence about Sisi, the Justice Department had been examining whether money moved from Cairo to Trump, potentially violating federal law that bans U.S. candidates from taking foreign funds. Investigators had also sought to learn if money from Sisi might have factored into Trump’s decision in the final days of his run for the White House to inject his campaign with $10 million of his own money.

Guess what happened next? The American people installed El Caudillo del Mar-a-Lago in the White House, and he installed William Barr in the Justice Department as attorney general, and suddenly, political appointees began stonewalling the investigators until Barr determined that, hey, there’s no evidence here. This set off the kind of run-of-the-mill chaos characteristic of the previous administration.

It is unclear what, if any, actions Wray, who was also appointed by Trump, took in response.

Almost nobody the Post talked to about this thinks that anything but crude political meddling turned off this investigation. (Except, of course, for the officials of the former president*’s current campaign, who activated their political Tourette’s in reply. Deep state! Fake news! Trump haters! I can have cookie now, Vanky?) But the Post story appears to delineate quite clearly that el-Sisi, who’s been known to bribe foreign officials in the past, was trying to buy himself a president.

This can’t be something that we just drop. This can’t be something that cedes pride of place in our campaign coverage to J. Divan Vance’s gun-totin’ Mamaw and Doug Emhoff’s first marriage. If the Post investigation is correct, it sure looks like very first offense mentioned in the Constitution as grounds for impeachment. In his notes on the constitutional convention, writing as always in the third person, Mr. Madison offered an encompassing view of government corruption that did not stop at bribery, because government corruption never stops at bribery.

Mr. MADISON thought it indispensable that some provision should be made for defending the Community agst. the incapacity, negligence or perfidy of the chief Magistrate. The limitation of the period of his service, was not a sufficient security. He might lose his capacity after his appointment. He might pervert his administration into a scheme of peculation or oppression. He might betray his trust to foreign powers. The case of the Executive Magistracy was very distinguishable, from that of the Legislature or of any other public body, holding offices of limited duration. It could not be presumed that all or even a majority of the members of an Assembly would either lose their capacity for discharging, or be bribed to betray, their trust. Besides the restraints of their personal integrity & honor, the difficulty of acting in concert for purposes of corruption was a security to the public. And if one or a few members only should be seduced, the soundness of the remaining members, would maintain the integrity and fidelity of the body. In the case of the Executive Magistracy which was to be administered by a single man, loss of capacity or corruption was more within the compass of probable events, and either of them might be fatal to the Republic.

I find myself hoping that the poor bank employees who had to fill up the bags with the two hundred pounds of American cash money got to “draw the water from the well,” as Don Barzini said to the heads of the Five Families. I hope some of the bills mysteriously fell out onto the floor.

I don't know how Kamala did it, but she managed to make a much worse VP pick than Trump did. And unlike JD Vance, I don't think there's anything that Walz is going to be able to do to change anybody's mind.

Now they even lose the argument for having a "younger" team for a "new generation".

Trump's Age: 78
JD's Age: 40

Kamala's Age: 59
Tom's Age: 60

The Trump/Vance ticket is 1 year younger than the Harris/Walz ticket. Boomer's picking Boomers.

Typical. Democrats are a bunch of checkers playing dummies that always manage to outmaneuver themselves. This is what happens when you have the memory of a goldfish even before you go completely senile like Joe* did before the 2020 election.

How, specifically, is Trump against liberalism? Here’s the tip of that iceberg:

Trump and the MAGA movement have given control of women’s bodies to the state, denying them the right to make their own medical decisions, even where they have been subjected to sexual violence or their lives are at stake. They have begun taking steps to track women’s menstrual cycles and to prevent them from traveling out of state while pregnant. They have also promised to put an end to contraception and ”recreational” sex.

Trump and other Republicans have assaulted voting rights, throwing out the Voting Rights Act of 1965, pushing for voting suppression one state at a time, and consistently refusing to accept the outcomes of elections. They have denied the rule of law and openly plan to go further if reelected. Their motto is, as another authoritarian fascist put it, “For my friends, everything; for my enemies, the law.”

Trump’s MAGAs are also planning to do away with freedom of religion in favor of religious nationalism. It’s worth mentioning that the Wars of Religion that gave rise to liberalism, and killed off so many, were mostly a dispute between Protestants and Catholics, because of whether MAGA Christian Nationalism would be Protestant Christian Nationalism (“establishing an exclusivist version of Protestant Christianity as the dominant moral and cultural order”) or Catholic Integralism (the Catholic faith “should be the basis of all public law and public policy within civil society”) remains to be seen.

Trump is waging war against facts as well as rights. He ushered in the age of “alternative facts” – better described as “alternatives to facts” or propaganda or simply lies – by himself lying in public 30,570 times during his presidency. His Supreme Court is busy cashing out this disdain for facts with a war on expertise. In the face of a global scientific consensus on climate change, SCOTUS denied the EPA the ability to regulate greenhouse gasses. In defending gerrymandering, the Chief Justice dismissed the mathematical models submitted by experts as “sociological gobbledygook” – though these models are already used by gerrymanders to effectively gerrymander. Finally, SCOTUS knee-capped all the Federal Agencies that rely on nonpartisan expertise all at once by throwing out the Chevron Doctrine that allows agencies to apply regulations to cases appropriately. There are hundreds of Federal Agencies, by the way, with 3 million employees. These agencies fight the proliferation of nuclear weapons, direct air traffic, run lighthouses, maintain federal highways, predict the weather, track hurricanes and tornadoes, and provide emergency disaster relief – among many other things. The fact that Republicans have, for a long time, wanted to do away with the Department of Energy – which mainly deals with nuclear safety and nuclear weapons – suggests they lack the most basic knowledge about what these various agencies do. And the fact that a recent SCOTUS decision confused the pollutant at issue in the case with “laughing gas” five times, suggests the Court also lacks the knowledge to take over Federal Agencies.

This analysis explores rhetorical shifts from outright climate denial to subtler types of obstruction, which may further delay action on the climate crisis as well as prolong the influence of the fossil fuel industry on environmental and energy policy in the United States. While “climate denial” is arguably the most commonly understood and historically used term, it only describes one type of an ever-widening array of tactics.

Some members of Congress have shifted from outright climate denial to other rhetorical tactics. Examples include redirecting responsibility for addressing the climate crisis, such as deferring U.S. actions to reduce greenhouse emissions until other countries act first; portraying climate activism as alarmism; or spreading misinformation.

On December 6, 2018, Rex Tillerson made his first extensive public remarks since being ousted as secretary of state that spring. He was remarkably candid. Fielding questions from Bob Schieffer of CBS News at a Houston event, Tillerson described the difference between transitioning from the highly disciplined, process-oriented Exxon Mobil Corporation to the Trump White House. He described Trump as “a man who is pretty undisciplined, doesn’t like to read, doesn’t read briefing reports, doesn’t like to get into the details of a lot of things, but rather just kind of said, ‘Look, this is what I believe and you can try to convince me otherwise, but most of the time you’re not going to do that.’”

When Schieffer asked how his relationship with Trump went off the rails, Tillerson said, “We are starkly different in our styles. We did not have a common value system. I’ll just be blunt about that and so often the president would say, ‘Well, here’s what I want to do and here’s how I want to do it.’ And I had to say to him, ‘Mr. President, I understand what you want to do, but you can’t do it that way. It violates the law. It violates the treaty.’

Never one to let a slight go unaddressed, Trump slammed Tillerson. He cast the man who rose from civil engineer to chief executive at one of the world’s largest companies and who considered himself a student of history as, of all things, unintelligent. Trump tweeted that Tillerson “didn’t have the mental capacity needed. He was dumb as a rock and I couldn’t get rid of him fast enough. He was lazy as hell.”

The insult was a reminder to all who served in the administration that loyalty was a one-way street. An honest reflection like the one Tillerson gave Schieffer after more than a year of service in government could easily be interpreted by the president as a personal betrayal, from which there could be no complete recovery. Tillerson was entirely unbothered, confiding to friends there was nothing to learn or gain by taking Trump’s bait. “Don’t ask me,” he would say to associates with a chuckle months later. “I’m dumb as a rock!”

For the obvious reason: same as those Republican Congressmen who deny climate change, 6ixStringJack is a stupid asshole whose actions cause serious damage. Are your teeth growing back, 6ix? Are you still unemployed, living off the government, 6ix? Do you ever stop screwing up? How are your internal organs doing, after decades of alcohol abuse and smoking? 6ix, the sum of your life, same as for those Republican Congressmen, comes to Stupid Assholes Who Would Make The World Better By Being Either Dead Or Not In Congress.

It's pretty weird that Tampon Tim was putting tampon machines in boys bathrooms.

Isn't that weird? I think that's weird. That's just weird.

I can't wait to find out that this dude was getting handsy with the boys in school. You know that he was.

I don't know about you, but I'm going to vote for the guy that the AP verified did not fuck couch cushions over the guy that did stuff the media is going to cover up quicker than the Roman Catholic Church moved a pedophile priest out of state to do it all over again before the internet was a thing.

It begins with a text message from Angus King, the junior senator from Maine: “Could you give me a call when you get a chance? Important.”

He calls, and King informs him of a conversation he’s just had with a high-ranking Pentagon official. They’ve been tracking online chatter from right-wing extremists who appear to be planning something bad on the day of Donald Trump’s upcoming rally in Washington, D.C. The president has been telling them the election was stolen; now they’re coming to steal it back. There’s talk of gun smuggling, of bombs and arson, of targeting the traitors in Congress who are responsible for this travesty. Romney’s name has been popping up in some frightening corners of the internet, which is why King needed to talk to him. He isn’t sure Romney will be safe.

Romney hangs up and immediately begins typing out a text to Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader. Mitch has been indulgent of Trump’s deranged behavior over the last four years, but he’s not crazy. Mitch knows the election wasn’t stolen, that his guy lost fair and square. He sees the posturing by Republican politicians for what it is. He’ll want to know about this, Romney thinks. He’ll want to protect his colleagues, and himself.

Romney sends his text: “In case you have not heard this, I just got a call from Angus King who said that he had spoken with a senior official at the Pentagon who reports that they are seeing very disturbing social media traffic regarding the protests planned on the 6th. There are calls to burn down your home, Mitch; to smuggle guns into DC, and to storm the Capitol. I hope that sufficient security plans are in place, but I am concerned that the instigator—the President—is the one who commands the reinforcements the DC and Capitol police might require.

McConnell never responds.

Trumptards are fragile souls easily broken but unrealistically optimistic about their futures. When success eludes them because they aren't nearly as capable as they think of themselves, they angrily blame everyone except themselves for their failures. See Trump for how that psychological drama plays out repeatedly. Or just look at any old Trumptard's history of repeated dramatic failures, which drives them to crazily blame the Democrats and aliens.

Suddenly

• Trump attended the Libertarian Party convention and suddenly announced he would pardon their hero, convicted internet drug trafficker Ross Ulbricht.

• After a call from billionaire mega-donor Jeff Yass, an early investor in TikTok, he suddenly pulled a 180 and said that he opposed a TikTok ban.

• He attended a Bitcoin conference in Nashville and suddenly announced that he favored a strategic Bitcoin reserve.

• After months of railing against electric cars, he suddenly switched gears and said, "I'm for electric cars" because "Elon endorsed me very strongly."

• He met a waitress in Las Vegas and suddenly had a brainstorm that he could win votes by endorsing a policy of no tax on tips.

• After polls showed that he was losing support among seniors, he suddenly announced that “SENIORS SHOULD NOT PAY TAX ON SOCIAL SECURITY! ”

Everyone does some of this but Trump is cynically carrying it to new heights.

How do Trumptards maintain their belief in their moral superiority despite their tax-cheating and being the worst employee of the month, every month? What is the mental trick you Trumptards use to persuade yourselves? Is it self-hypnosis? Or is it something consumed such as large quantities of alcohol, hallucinogens, and Trump?

J.D. Vance Used to Be an Atheist. What He Believes Now Is Telling.
He’s not an evangelical Christian. He’s a Catholic — of a very specific type.

By Molly Olmstead | Aug 08, 2024, 5:45 AM

In 2021, when J.D. Vance was asked at a conference why he had converted to Catholicism just two years earlier, he had a fairly simple answer.

“I really liked that the Catholic Church was just really old,” he said.

This anti-modern worldview is key to understanding Vance. In a party long dominated by anti-intellectual evangelical Christians with a hearty distrust of institutions, Vance stands out among its leaders for having embraced a church with a complex social doctrine built off the work of ancient philosophers. His enthusiasm for a particular and relatively obscure kind of contemporary Catholic political thought shows up in his politics — his longing for Americans to build robust nuclear families, his comments about banning porn, his scorn for childless cat ladies. It’s tempting to see these stances as old ones from the Christian right, familiar to anyone who has followed the evolution of the GOP in the past couple of decades, but Vance’s past comments indicate that they’re motivated by something newer, and more radical, than that.

He was drawn to Catholicism for its rules and relative stability over centuries. “I felt like the modern world was constantly in flux,” Vance said. “The things you believed 10 years ago were no longer acceptable to believe 10 years later.”

For his Senate campaign, Vance praised Hungarian strongman Viktor Orbán for policies that incentivized marriage and children. Orbán’s government had offered loans to married couples that were forgiven if the couple stayed together and had three children. (Orbán is not himself Catholic but has privileged Christianity in a country dominated by Catholicism.) “Why can’t we do that here?”

These anti-modern comments fit with a certain kind of worldview that prizes a traditional and family-oriented society above individual liberties—and even democracy. It’s a guiding philosophy of a new faction of the conservative movement that pulls from elements of both the left and far right, that champions populist economics and radically conservative social policies, and that promises a revolution in the entire political order: the postliberal right.

In recent years, a sect of the Republican Party, including Vance, Marco Rubio, Tom Cotton, and Josh Hawley, is snubbing the party’s policies favoring tech companies and big business, instead infusing the GOP with populist energy—and, in some cases, disdain for the liberal political order. (Liberalism here refers to the dominant political order of the modern world, with its emphasis on equality, personal liberty, and individual rights.) Those legislators who identify with the postliberal right advocate for state authority in order to build the kind of society they want to live in. They aim to control women’s reproductive choices and individual freedoms concerning gender, sexuality, and identity; they prefer isolationist economic policies; they support unions and labor protections and oppose immigration; and they seek to elevate religious organizations’ place in their schools and civic institutions.

Democrats have needed someone like Tim Walz for decades

August 7, 2024

Sarah Smarsh writes:

Sometimes on our farm a nice car would roll up the gravel driveway and a man in a slick suit would get out. He would either be trying to sell us something overpriced that we’d never buy, because of our limited means and common sense, or trying to buy something we’d never sell — namely land, about which my grandfather said, “You don’t get rid of it, because they don’t make any more of it.”

This man would shake our hands before driving off.

“Better count your fingers,” Grandpa Arnie would tell us and laugh.

I’ve shared the story before to explain the gulf I’ve long felt between the essence of the rural white working poor who raised me — honest, flawed people who would welcome just about anyone into our home but a liar — and the red-hatted-fool avatar they’ve been assigned in national discourse.

What a relief, then, to see emerge on the national stage the Minnesota governor and Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz, who embodies the earnest, humane, rural people who shaped me and the prairie populism that shaped the progressive foundations of the Great Plains.

Mr. Walz went to a state college, taught public high school and went into government — more than a couple class rungs above my grandfather, who in the 1940s left school after sixth grade to work the Kansas wheat fields with his German American dad.

But when Mr. Walz smiles and his eyes disappear into a good-natured squint — say, while holding a piglet like a baby at a state fair — I see Grandpa Arnie.

With due respect to political statistics, which convey real and important trends, the rural white working class is not a monolith. Among them remains a large and consequential minority of sensible people who even in their vulnerable economic state remain unmoved by charlatans blaming immigrants while amassing corporate wealth.

In recent decades, the Democratic Party has made little direct appeal to them, such that Mr. Walz’s rural background seems downright transgressive on the top ticket. As evidence, some (often coastal) pundits now struggle to find a word for a vice-presidential pick raised in small-town Nebraska beyond “folksy,” since their language about his place of origin has for so long reflected geographic and class biases. “Trump country.” “One of the square states in the middle.”

My grandfather died while I was a first-generation college student, but my grandma — a Bernie Sanders supporter who went on to vote for Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden — has commented more than once about how Donald Trump would’ve turned Grandpa Arnie’s stomach.

Imagine if the type of person you most loathe became the symbol for your people and place. It has been, for me and so many others, excruciating.
