I knew almost none of my neighbors when I lived in apartments. That's too close quarters for me, and I didn't want anybody feeling like they could just knock on my door at any time unannounced and walk in. I know most of the people on my block though. Nice to be able to check up or be checked up on if we don't see each other for a while.

I've meet about 3 on my floor, one gentleman and 2 ladies. Think both the ladies are named Carol and I don't know the gentleman's name. There are I think 10 apartments on my floor. Not much else to tell. I speak to them when I see them but that is about all.

Well, this massive allergy attack or whatever seems to be going. Hardly coughed at all last night in my sleep. So that's good.

Out soon to get some stuff done like groceries.

Clouds rolling too. Suppose to rain by Friday. Have to see if it shows up.

Ask my family... I walk up to people on the street. People repairing cable networks. Dog walkers. Street maintenance. Police. I don't go door -knocking, but I make a point of getting neighbors' names and (if they care to share) mobile numbers. I text the nearest neighbors if there's a power outage, or if I think I see something wrong.

Busybody. That's me!

Ain't me either, Brenda.

I'm not really sure how I got to know my neighbors that I know anymore. Just kind of happened organically over the years. Pretty cool that I've been useful to most of them from time to time, especially since one is a wood worker and the other is a retired plumber and they've also turned out to be quite useful to me in return. Also nice to have people giving wellness checks to each other if we don't see each other for a while or after a bad weather event too.

But yeah... When I was in my apartments over the years before I had a house the most I really ever did was just say hi if I bumped into people. I never wanted to know anything about people who were were sharing the same building as me in such close quarters. I never really had anybody that was around my age in the apartments either that weren't married with kids anyhow, so that wasn't too hard to do.

I think most people don't look at it as if you'd be intruding.

That's probably more our personalities being projected onto other people. I'm going to venture a guess that on most days you would look at it as if somebody you didn't know would be intruding on you if they came up to you out of the blue and started talking. Am I right?

Just yesterday somebody came knocking at my door. I kept doing what I was doing and didn't answer it. I figure it was either somebody trying to sell me something, somebody begging for money or Jehovah's Witnesses. My neighbors all have my number, and anybody I know and/or care about lives far enough away that they wouldn't just drop by unannounced. Anybody knocking at my door wasn't going to offer me conversation about anything I was interested in discussing.

I guess you're both introverts. I used to be, too. Ok with people I knew well, but very very shy as a child.
Kinda made it hard being a supervisor and having to deal with so many people. (That, and scheduling dyslexia, ha!) So I guess I compensated by trying to put people in the "I know them" category by being kind of nosy.

I found out that by preemptively asking them about themselves and being interested in what they were doing

a) I had a ready made personal response (interest in them) and generated a predictable reaction from them (happy to talk about themselves)
b) I learned a lot. Helpful at work AND with family AND around the neighborhood.
c) I didn't have to say much about myself.

What surprises me is the reaction I get from people I see working - line repair crews, city maintenance crews, people doing god knows what... As it turned out, THAT crew was putting in a commuter rail line across a street, so they had to put in all kinds of switches and controllers and signal lights. Even the guy repairing a fiberoptic cable under the street... he showed me the cable and the coupler they were using.

I found that by asking "whatcha doin'?" most people are HAPPY to explain what they're doing! They'll take a lot of time explaining. It's like they feel so invisible in their jobs that they're happy to be noticed, for a change.

EXCEPT COPS. Try that on cops and you'll get "Get outta here"

And I have yet to try that on EMTS and firefighters. I'd expect the same response as cops.

It depends on the day, really. Sometimes when the mood strikes I can be very outgoing. More often than not this isn't the case though.

Probably better off anyhow. When I'm not in the mood it's a lot of effort for me to even pretend to be engaged in other people and their lives or just regular conversation. I think I've probably ended up coming off as quite rude because of that, since somebody's second or third interaction with me could be quite the letdown after making an excellent first impression. It's not that I'm trying to be rude. It's just most days I couldn't care less about small talk.

I'm thinking right now about Jaynez replying to a post in a music thread that I had written in several days prior. I've read his 3 replies several times, but they're overwhelming with all the videos he posted and it feels like I'd have to do homework before making a reply, so I don't even feel like replying to them right now. Maybe tomorrow. But not today.

I imagine your interactions don't have much to do with introversion as much as how "up" you are for it on any particular day.

I think it probably was introversion when I was younger and I cared far more about what other people thought of me than anybody ever should.

I just don't have the energy or desire to care too much about other people's opinions about anything more often than not. I think dumping that project is going to help open up some of those stores a bit. Although, during the handoff I mentioned just a few days ago I've unfortunately found one part in particular I cared about more than any other that I'm not going to be able to handoff immediately. And now I've done what I didn't want to do and I've gotten back in over my head trying to get it "perfect" before the hand off. It's the same as it ever was, the more I get done the more I find needs to be done.

So instead of mowing the lawn like I wanted to today, I've been sitting in front of my computer slaving away for the fifth out of five straight days in what might be the fifth of the next fifty days on something that really would be better to be working on during the winter when it's too cold to do anything else, or would have been better to be working on when it was oppressively hot and humid out rather than at the end of summer when it's going to start cooling down and I could be doing things that are more beneficial to my real-world self.

I just always have too many things to do and to think about to ever really be present in relationships, whether it be stuff like this project, or the million and one things I need to do to get this house into a proper home.

And that's on my good days when I'm super active. Can't forget about the times where I just waste weeks or months at a time doing practically nothing.

My buddy is always trying to get me to micro-dose on mushrooms. He thinks I need a "reset" and that it could be the cure for what ails me here. I dunno. It's super expensive, but he's offered to pay for it all for me. You know I don't like lab-created behavioral modification crap, but I'm pretty much on the fence about stuff like this too no matter how many times people like Joe Rogan say it's a good idea.

I did mushrooms twice in my mid 20's and tripped balls on them and neither time was a pleasant experience that I look back on fondly. Quite the opposite, actually. But my buddy says micro-dosing is nothing like that and if I even felt anything at all it would be pleasant.

A reset does sound nice though. Wouldn't it be nice to just wave a magic wand and all of the sudden have all the things that should be priority come into focus while being able to just let all the stuff that doesn't really matter go completely?

It would be sad thinking about what that might mean regarding my time spent here in the future. As many hours as I've wasted doing various inconsequential things in my life, I'm sure I've wasted a few thousands of hours on FFF.net over the last 18 years. If magic mushrooms "fixed" me, I might never feel the need to come here anymore other than saying my goodbyes to you and Brenda and Jaynez. Even to JSF too.

Hell... I'd even say goodbye to Wetware and Ted-Bot, although that would be like saying goodbye to my air-fryer and my microwave before I go out to run some errands.

At least my dad is coming over tomorrow. That was a spur of the moment decision at the end of our phone call today. He seemed like he could use it as much as I probably do, so I asked if he wanted to come over this week and he said tomorrow works for him. I probably still won't mow the lawn tomorrow but at least that will be a little break from my project and all the online bullshit. Maybe if I'm really lucky my buddy won't have a super busy day at work and we can hang out tomorrow night after dad leaves. A whole freakin' month has flown by since the 4th of July and I haven't seen my friends since then. Had plenty of opportunity to so while I was deep in my funk, but once I crawled out of it everyone seems to be so busy and doesn't have time to hang out.

I fully admit to being a shy child and my mother having to push me to get me to talk to people. Back then I would rather spend time with a book or maybe some music I had to learn for band. When my dad was a live he was my favourite person to talk too.

So, yeah you would say I was an introvert. Still am in some ways.

Unless I know the person really, really well I do have a hard time engaging.

The infamous "they" say that introversion and extroversion are the most stable personality traits. They appear to last a lifetime. So for me, I had to learn to compensate bc of my job. I developed a "procedure" that lets me get thru with the minimum of discomfort. I hate parties, tho. Not great at chitchat. If it's not a social situation I can control. Also, have a hard time dealing with authority- especially authority figures I really really need something from (like a recalcitrant doctor) , and hostile people. I think it extends to advancing into new learning territory too. I do best when I have an extrovert at my side. Sigh. I do the best I can, but we introverts will always be a minority at a disadvantage in a world of extroverts.

I've had part time jobs when I was a teenager that were hard for me to engage with people which would lead to me being let go.

I know what you mean. I have a friend that loves parties and she was trying to drag me this and that but I was able to put my foot down and she gave up.

Doctors, I have no problem getting them to back off on things or being able to ask for things. I've had to do that so many times over the years. A friend of my mom's got mad at me when I was a teenager because I was talking back to this doctor. I won't let them talk down to me.

Yeah, I know.

For your own safety, BRENDA, I think you should develop a reliable contact on your floor. Someone who will notice if they don't see you coming and going, and call emergency services.

My sis just got involved into someone's affairs bc this woman listed her as emergency contact. In reality there was nothing she could do. It was this lady's apartment neighbors and apartment manager who stepped in when she was rushed to hospital. They waited for ambulance, took her dog in, and visited her at hospital.

Not sure if she's going to make it. Which brings up a whole raft of issues. Is there someone you can trust who lives near you to be your healthcare proxy? i.e. who can make decisions for you, know what you want if you're unconscious and can't decide for yourself? Is there someone with springing power of attorney (i.e power of attorney that doesn't come into effect unless you're unconscious or incompetent, as determined by a doctor) who can pay your bills, take care of your stuff while you can't? Do you have an "advanced directive" that tell a hospital what to do¿

SIX, this goes for you too.

I can disappear from sight for so long that my neighbors wouldn't know if I was dead until a month after it happened. I never really thought about what my neighbors might think about me not having a job at my age, but it surprised me when my retired neighbor across the street had no idea I didn't work. We'd been neighbors for about 9 years at that point, and I'd only worked 2 part time jobs for around 2.5 years during that time. He thought I worked full time.

I think the only time a neighbor would be useful to me in that situation is if I was mowing the lawn one day and either had a heart attack or passed out from low blood sugar and was lying face down in the grass next to the mower.

All my friends and family know about my condition, and they know where I keep my glucose pen in case anything were to happen. I've also got the instructions for what to do on my fridge and the pen comes in a package with instructions that have pictures for what to do.

Even when I'm not going out or doing much, there are people I talk to nearly every day on the phone who call me if we haven't talked in 2 days or so. I'm not really worried about it much as long as my old man and my aunt are around. They both still get around really well and are in good health more or less, and they're both very responsible. I think I'll have to reevaluate the situation when neither one of them are in any condition to assist if something went wrong.

I'm not really worried about that though. My biggest fear is taking a shower. I think since I was around 40 years old I started worrying about what would happen if I slipped and hit my head in there. I think that's a much more likely scenario than a diabetic event would be. It would be probably 2 days before somebody got worried enough about me to consider coming here and at least 3 days before somebody came to my house.

My friend in the foothills lives alone. Her neighbors would step in if anything obviously wrong ... eg. smoke from the house or yard, noisy break-in ... but not otherwise.

For her safety, we text every morning and chat briefly every evening. That wouldn't help in an heart attack situation but for slower moving events it works fine.

Keep your cellphone charged up and with you at all times. BRENDA, a cellpgone can be a good safety measure.

You should both have emergency bracelets ... the medic alert cost comes from them maintaining a database on you, but a simple stamped or engraved tag should do OK. They have do-it-yourself pet tags at pet stores. I probably should too, but not sure which part of my complex medical history and treatment belongs!

An emergency contact is only good if they have healthcare proxy and springing POA, otherwise it's useless. My sis, named emergency contact, couldn't do a damn thing.

Just thinking things thru.

I've considered maybe getting a tattoo for it. I've never gotten one in my life.

I hate jewelry or wearing anything besides clothes that isn't a wrist watch. I think a little tattoo on my wrist would be the better way to go for me. I can't imagine a real simple one would cost much more than the damn diabetic bracelets do. Freakin' a-holes just want to make a buck wherever they can. $30 for a bracelet on Amazon? Go F yourselves. I really don't understand why the doctors and hospitals aren't given boxes of these things to give out along with their $300 sample insulin pens. I'm quite shocked that the Diabetes Education Center people didn't have them on hand. They're the only people in the industry so far who have recommended that we get one.

We finally, finally, finally got ours. Free from humidity too.

I mowed my lawn in record time today despite the length. Front and back finished and even took the leaf blower out to clean up all the crap from the curbs and sidewalks in less than 90 minutes.

That's all I felt like doing outside though. Eventually I guess I'll have to get around to that landscaping.

If I feel like it.

Still hot here. Temperatures have been mostly 90-ish. Every now and again they promise a cooldown to 85, and less frequently it happens, for a day or two every couple of weeks, but the heat here has been pretty nonstop.
So it's not like we've had super hot days, but it hasn't really cooled down much for ... 5-6 weeks?
Once again they're predicting a cooldown 5 days in the future. It always seems to be 5 days away.

It's been one of those weeks.

Got in touch with my GP who bird dogged my rheumatologist. Apparently she's been sitting on the fence about what to do. My serology isn't typical so she was reluctant to start Rituxamab bc it's a risky treatment, but when I updated her on some symptoms that decided her.

We had to take the dog in for a crap ton of dental work. Seriously. 15 teeth extracted, many of them abscessed. And I've been brushing her teeth for years. Really!! I hope she's more comfortable now.

And I'm stuck in hospital ER bc one leg swelled up. They're looking for a blood clot. It's good thing this wasn't a REAL emergency bc otherwise I'd be dead. So far it's been a useless visit. We thought we'd try the (literally) ER nearest to us, just to check it out. I'll never come to this ER again if I can help it.

And to cap it off, we had an earthquake. A 4+ that moved the house back and forth a couple of inches. Just a gentle reminder from Mother Nature that The Big One is overdue.

The good thing is that I can be confident the coming week will be better.

Still needs a vacuum around it but it's better. Not sure how the scratches happened. Could have been from the move here or being storage when I first got back or at the crappy place because I had no where to put anything and it probably ended up with boxes on top of it.
