I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Believe it or not, I've been spending a lot of time picking out plants for the front landscaping. My problem has been I fall in love with a lot of different plants and keep changing my mind! But since I decided on a general "look" for the front yard, I've been able to narrow down my choices. So here they are, for posterity, so I don't change my mind. Again.

I already have an Island Oak (quercus tomentella). It was one of the first things I planted, and I picked it for entirely practical reasons: it's very drought tolerant and wildlife friendly, but narrower than the most common oak around here (Coast Live Oak, quercus agrifolia) and will shade the yard and still fit.

I'm also keeping two of three Catalina Island cherry. Also planted for practical reasons: drought tolerant, wildlife friendly very narrow form that I planted to screen the ugly McMansions from view. Two grew true to form (altho one seems to have a little hollyleaf cherry in the mix) and one grew in as a "weeping" form. Absolutely bizarre, but when you propagate from open-pollinated seed I guess you never know exactly what's gonna come up.

A couple of other plants I'm keeping: purple trailing lantana, and creeping Oregon grape (berberis repens), a lovely low-growing plant with holly like leaves, bright yellow flowers and blue berries.

Some plants I'm getting rid of: I was sold three plants as "repens", and they're now 6' + tall, and that's AFTER being pruned down a lot last year!
Also, Ashy leafed California buckwheat. Nice little bush, but absolutely in the wrong place.

So...

Ground covers to replace the lawn:

Dwarf coyote brush (baccharis pilularis)... nice, low, evergreen ground cover but with small flowers that drive pollinators wild.

Spreading sage "Gracias" (salvia Clevelandii X Leucophylla) a beautiful silver- leafed low growing sage with whorls of blue-lavender flowers in spring.

Low-growing California buckwheat, Seacliff buckwheat (Eriogonum parvifolium) with gray leaves and pinkish-cream small pompoms of flowers that fade to deep, rich rust color. Host to small blue butterflies and great nectar source for lots of bees and butterflies in late summer.

California fuchsia. A narrow-leaf cultivar from somewhere around Hollywood hills, with trumpet-shaped scarlet flowers in late fall/ early winter. (Like, blooming now.) Great 'pops" of color and loved by hummingbirds.
All can get by on water once a month.

I'm still deciding on what my accent plants are going to be, but it's going to be one of the awesome smelling sages (salvia Clevelandii and cultivars or mixes).

Also, thinking about a bunch grass. The ones of the right size are bad for pets, so I'll probably just go with a sterile fountain grass.

Foundation plants will be coffeeberry (not a real coffee bean).

Some plants in the front will go in the back. I have a spot where the downspout dumps a lot of water, so: goldenrod, yarrow, chrysanthemum.

Just a quiet, gray morning. For a change, I woke up comfortable. Nobody else is awake. After all the scheduling mishaps this week*, I get to enjoy peace and quiet all by myself.
* We had scheduled for dear daughters exercise group party on Thursday, shopping and the handyman (and temporary water shut off) on Friday and hubby's medical test on Monday. Instead, the clinic called on rescheduled him to Friday, and the handyman called and said they had sent him a bad part so he needed to reschedule for next week. At least the shopping got done, but all that meant I wound up short of sleep.

For scheduling reasons family and foothill friend and I are celebrating T-day and my b'day on Dec 1. I can't believe I will be 70. I still have lots to do. Where did the time go??

Think I'm gonna take my coffee over to the sofa and daydream for a bit.

Out in a minute for my rare Saturday afternoon pick up game of mah jong. Need to do one thing before I get to my senior's centre. We'll only be playing to around 4pm. It closes early on Saturday.

Been forgetting things yesterday. Almost went out without my backpack. *L* Had to come back from the elevator to get it.

Also more rain and some wind heading to BC. As usual Vancouver Island will get the worst of it.

Wow, me too!

Hubby is significantly older than I am, and at this point takes responsibility for ferrying us around (family chauffeur), percolating coffee every morning, keeping the computers and electronics updated, and making the bed. That leaves me as the family scheduler- organizer- coordinator- decision maker. Aside from the fact that that hits some of my already weak points (I joked at work that I was a scheduling dyslexic, and relied heavily on one of my team leaders for that) it also hits on my crappy memory. Which is only getting crappier as time goes on. I use all kinds of aids- big family calendar, kitchen white board, diary, smart phone alarms, and lots and lots of lists... but I live with the nagging fear that I'll forget something really important some day. Throw too many things into the hopper and I kind of go into brain freeze.

I can't multitask like I used to either. I got pretty good at burning meals until I figured that out!

But it's gotten worse lately. I feel like my brain is leaking out my ears. I think it's too many things to juggle but maybe it's just me.

I went to Home Depot with hubby today, as promised. It was a sometimes drizzly day, and with uncertain weather I decided today was a better day for that. So we went to a Home Depot a little farther away, and indeed they have more of larger stock. But looking at the end grain I see that most of it was very tightly circular grain, and extremely prone to cupping, twisting, and bowing. Not good. Plus, most of it was not dried, so you could use it ... if you didn't mind stickering it in a garage for a year!

So, I learned that it has better construction lumber, but not wood for woodworking.

Promise kept. On to pot roasting a very tough piece of tri tip.

Hah... Yeah. My Menard's is the same way. When I was looking for 2 boards to do the last step of the overlook last winter, I spent 45 minutes picking the two I wanted to use.

The worst part about it was that it was on the 2nd floor of the pavilion, so I was on top of a ledge only about 6 feet wide as I'm pulling out all these 10 or 12 foot pieces to go through and then twisting to the side to put them down. And with how much room I needed to do that, there wasn't a whole lot of room on the ground to work with while figuring. Even worse, the boards I bought were on the top of 2 shelves, so I was reaching over my head to get the first of them on the ground. But come to think of it, the bottom shelf might have been even worse since I'd have to be maneuvering each piece in between the posts on the railing. What a mess...

And because I'm me and I have respect for retail wage slaves since I've been one myself before, I spent another five or ten minutes stacking it all back up there neatly after I took them. The 2 guys that were there when I started looking through the pile weren't around anymore by the time I finished. I bet they "knew" they had a HUGE mess to clean up later, and probably had a big smile when they came back and saw that it was all put away.

Even when the job of picking two usable pieces was almost bigger than the project itself, they were only barely usable. They were the only two that were not bowed or crowned to hell AND that didn't have a ton of knots in them. But there were still knots. And since I was drilling through both pieces I had to make a point to plot out where I was going on both pieces to make sure I didn't trap myself into drilling through part of a knot and having a big mess to clean up in post.

I've even had problems with 2x4s at Menard's before though once. Every other time the 2x4s were fine, but one pallet they had was the most twisted pile of firewood I've seen outside of a forest.

Trump is fine.
He is also your current President.

I've got a second one in the works but I would love to do some real travelling. Like outside Canada before I really get too old.

I think some of my problem is living by myself now without my mum to think about or Blair, I just take for granted that I can remember things. Though I have forgotten lists that I've need when I have a lot of things to do. One reason why I get doctor's offices when I am their in person to write the appointment down for me and the other reason I like doing things in person is because of my hearing loss. The neurologist this last time asked me if I read lips. I said a little bit.

Maybe I'm just getting a little lacks in the way I do things. Have to tighten things up.

BRENDA, I think what you're saying is ... "Without anyone to report to/ be responsible for, demands on memory are reduced, and even if something's forgotten it only affects me, so who cares?" And when you say "tighten up" you mean ... ? Seems like you keep yourself pretty much on schedule, so aside from ADDING to your schedule (the equivalent of taking care of someone else) what are you thinking of?

How is the moisture situation there in BC? Except for the bomb cyclone, it seems like a pretty dry winter so far. Good for walking, not so good for fires.

Congrats on getting your bookwork done! And I hope the tiles fall your way next mah jong game!

SIX
How do you think Menards compares to Home Depot?

In our area, Home Depot represents the Walmartization of hardware stores. It drove out a much better hardware/home improvement store, almost as large in square footage but with a much better selection, called All American.

Aside from the crap lumber (needs intense scrutiny! ) it looks as if known tool brands have a separate, subtly cheaper, line of tools just for Home Depot. For example, there is a Makita circular saw- that model sells with a brake elsewhere. At Home Depot, it doesn't have one.

Complete disorganization of small parts. It's not Home Depot's fault, just goes along with Walmartization. Our daughter's caregiver's daughter worked at both Target and Walmart. At Walmart, they just tossed the stuff they didn't want on the floor. At Home Depot, they just toss it into the nearest (irrelevant) bin. Better bring a tape measure!

How's the current project, SIX? I definitely can understand being consumedby a current interest, altho with daily responsibilities I can never go too astray for too long.

****

Been able to get outdoors. My current project was to clean up and paper over the 3.5' next to the front curb, but it's been subject to "mission creep". Got productively derailed into digging/teasing out the Bermuda grass from, and recovering, the remainder of the woodchip mulch pile delivered to our front yard a year ago. About 5 more hours of work, at the rate I can deliver, and the entire 3.5' curb strip will be cleaned and graded/weeded, ready for papering over, reinstalling the bender board, and mulching with my (recovered) remaining mulch.

Speaking of responsibilities ... dear daughter went to a get-together five days ago, and caught a flu. Not Covid (we checked) but I am waiting to sneak into her room and feel her forehead, since she spiked a 102F (39C) temp late yesterday evening. So far, none of us have had Covid, and except for her ongoing issues dear daughter has been remarkably healthy. This is probably the first she's bern sick since I can't remember when.

Exactly without any one to be responsible for or have to worry about sometimes when I forget something it becomes who cares. It's affecting no one but me. That I have to admit brings me down. Yeah, I mentioned "tightening up" and the reason for that is getting too lacks in letting things get away from me and it comes back to the not caring.

I do really and as I said sometimes it comes down to not caring and that plays into my depression. Take last Christmas for example I didn't do anything for myself except and invitation to my boss's for dinner and it allowed me to learn and play a bit of a bridge. They had invited a refugee family from Afghanistan, who taught me a new card game and I had to help my boss communicate with the mother. My boss asked a question of the mother that she didn't understand, so I re-asked it using a different word. Then the mother understood.

It was dry on Monday and dry today but we are heading for more rain starting tomorrow which brings lots of snow in the mountains but danger too. That is for being going into the back country, avalanche risks are higher as the snow pack isn't stable yet.

Fingers crossed for the publisher and I hope so too. But both are a game of chance.

Have you thought of volunteering somewhere? Like at the Senior Center? Maybe there are people there who don't see well and could use someone to read books to them? Or in your apartment?
Around here, the opportunities to volunteer are few and far between. But I'm sure there are many people who could use help, maybe you could find a few?

That's the flipside as I am not much on people. Being around them for too long and they start to get on my nerves.

I ran into the lady who used to come and look after my mum during her second bout of cancer and she has the same problem as me. Too many people and she is looking for the door. Told her, I know just what you mean.

I do too! There are many times I just want/need some peace and quiet. But that's the nice thing about volunteering: it's as much or as little as you want. Voluntary.

Possibly a pet? I'm sure cats and dogs are forbidden, besides, they can be demanding. Birds can be noisy.
Fish?
Or plants? Something for your balcony for the summer? A tomato perhaps? (If you like them, that is!) Basil? Or Book's favorite herb, rosemary? A terrarium where you can create your own exotic miniature world?

Or flowers just for their cheeriness?
One of my Canadian friends lives in an apartment building similar to yours, and he does some flower gardening around the building with another resident.

Just some thoughts.
I'm sure you'll figure it out. You've already gotten yourself into a cozy place.

Today is T-day, and dear daughter is itching to do takeout. Home cooking is boring. So ill be thankful for no cooking and no dishes.

Thinking about what to do this AM, if I pick out a couple yof gifts for dear daughter I'll be well ahead of where I usually am this time of year. And since I won't be cooking I can get in another hour or of yardwork. And the irrigation manifold has almost been completed, it's just missing the pressure vacuum breaker (received damaged so Mr Handyman is waiting for the replacement. He's doing an awesome job!) So progress is being made.

I may have caught what dear daughter has, but so far only a cough.

It's T-day, and everyone except the dog is sick. Dear daughter is recovering, hubby is at his worst, I think. I'm sick but I think the steroids are keeping symptoms down.
We're doing a very abbreviated meal today.
'Tis the season!

Sorry I didn't catch the rest of your post about T-day. Glad your daughter is feeling better and sorry about you and your hubby. Hopefully over the weekend you both will be recovering from whatever it is.

Oh, how I wish I could do more C-season shopping. I finished for a friend but I can't do much for friends in Alberta because I can't mail anything to them. Canada Post is on strike. This is there second week. So, even if I wanted to can't do anything.

Had a great day with my adopted family today. First time I'd seen some of them in a whole year since everybody was sick over there at Christmas and we didn't get together. Even had some new people this time. My buddy's parents. I've known the guy since grade school, but I never met his dad until tonight. Me and his mom met a few times, but I was as young as her granddaughter is the last time I would have seen her, so we really didn't remember each other. They're funny as hell though. Married 51 years and always taking jabs at each other and joking about divorce. I know where their son gets it now.

Played pool again after almost everybody had filed out and though I didn't win the race to 9 tonight, it was tied 8 to 8 when I lost the last game. Nothing much I could do there though. I broke dry, and then he ran the table so I didn't get another shot after the break. Not the way I wanted to go out, but you can't get mad about that.

About halfway through the playing tonight while I was having a good run and nailed a bank shot when I left myself bad he said "You're on the team. We're kicking (our other buddy) off the team and you're taking his place."

Food was awesome, and I got a whole 2nd helping of it waiting for me tomorrow.

Sorry you guys were sick Sigs. Hope you feel better soon.

Out soon. Need to do a bit more grocery shopping. Bought something yesterday that I didn't notice was wrong until I opened it. So got to replace it. It was a container of Almond milk. I usually buy the unsweetened and non-flavoured stuff. Didn't read the label and saw last night it had vanilla it. Yuck! But I had to use some on my cereal, so will fix that mistake today.

Well, to be political about that ... Canadian postal service is in debt to the tune of $1 billion dollars. Instead of giving Ukraine $19 billion, https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/news/2024/10/cana
da-announces-new-military-assistance-for-ukraine.html
maybe Justin Trudeau should have peeled some of that off for Canadians. IDK who is on Justin's priority list, but it doesn't seem to be Canadians.

I hope they sort it out soon.

Ack! Someone today just informed that next Wednesday is the 4th of December. It crept up on me fast this year. Oh, well. Not a whole lot around me to do. 3 or 4 cards to hand deliver and presents bought for a local friend. We'll meet up hopefully before Christmas as she still owes me my birthday present. *L*

Think all Canadians know that Canada Post is having financial troubles.

So, do I.

So, what is the current discussion on this. My impression is that a thought [process has taken hold where the Canadian Postal Service is supposed to show a profit, compared to other mail and parcel delivery services in Canada. BUT, AFAIK the Canadian Postal Service is the only delivery service that has a DUTY to deliver to every address, no matter how outlying In other words, unlike private delivery services, they can't just cut off expensive routes. At the same time, they're prohibited from offering certain services. So it seems that TPTB (and that includes Trudeau) haven't decided whether the postal service is a SERVICE, or whether it should be run as a profit center. Do I have that right?

I think the government expects it to do both.

As a former government employee, I get a little pissed off when that happens. It's like being expected to run a race hobbled.

The conservative Board Members from Orange County expected us to be cheap as a schlock lab, and at the same time expected us to do instant custom analyses and premiere method development too.

That's the equivalent of being expected to deliver mail and parcels way up to the icefields.

Seems like if managment has the faintest clue what's going on, they would know whether their costs were reasonable or not, and they wouldn't be whipsawed by either politically- based demands, or unreasonable union demands.

And if Ottowa can manage to open their pocketbooks for Ukraine (without demanding an audit), you'd think they could mange to squeeze a few sheckels out for postal service.

I've been doing some heavy duty (for me) yardwork: digging Bermuda grass out of a 3'+ curbside strip. Also got derailed into a bit of " mission creep" since the pile of mulch delivered over a year ago) overlapped onto the target area, and got grown over by a fine crop of Bermuda grass. So I teased out the grass roots and recovered the mulch into a discrete pile (for later use). I'm within a couple of hours of finishing up the "digging up" part, after that I just need to rake it smooth enough to cover with paper.

But for today I'm going to do something easy: raking up the fallen feijoa and sweeping up the driveway. Along with the rest of the family I'm still sick. Not as sick as they are, but swaying on my feet a bit.

Woke up at stupid o'clock with a very stuffy nose, and did dishes while that before going back to bed. Bfast over with, time to walk the dog and tackle the driveway. Then take a nap!!!

Yeah. I really had to compliment her on the turkey.

I was telling my aunt a few days ago that I'm excited about the party and the food is still going to be a huge upgrade from my normal meals, but it was probably going to be deli-bought meat like it was the last few years and nobody was making a turkey. I got spoiled with Thanksgiving growing up because even though my mom was never much of a cook she made the best turkey I've ever tasted. Full turkeys, twice a year at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

One year, my poor uncle did it when for some reason my mom wasn't going to be able to do it and I remember people talking about how dry that thing was 5 years later. I don't think my mom ever got away without making a turkey after that party.

But this time she bought a very large turkey breast and cooked it in the slow cooker. Still not as good as my mom's turkey was, but it was the best turkey I've ever had outside of that. It was still tender than most after I nuked it in the microwave for leftovers yesterday. And I hadn't even bothered to put anything on to cover it, since they gave me the food on a throw-away plastic thing with foil on the cover, and it was still tender as hell.

Good job.

SIX, if you can, ask her what turkey brand she got. Last time I got a turkey breast, no amount of slow cooking tenderized it. I had to cut it up into tiny little pieces and lubricate it with gravy to make it edible, it was that tough. There is such a thing called "woody breast" that affects chickens and I'm beginning to think it affects turkeys too. Unfortunately, I can't remember if it was a nationally known brand like Honeysuckle or Butterball, or some no-name brand. So since then, I've been reluctant to buy turkey breast except premiere heirloom turkeys.

Same here. Not really lazy, but I've been putting in as much yardwork as I can chisel out time. Yesterday evening I raked up fallen feijoa fruit and raked up/ swept up pine needles and fallen leaves from the driveway... in the dark. I'm about 75% done with what I intended to do, plus I went sideways from the marked area and did extra. Think I'm calling a halt for today. I have plenty of long-neglected indoor work to do.

I will try to remember to ask her how she made it the next time. She was telling me a bit about it and how I need a crock pot because it was pretty cheap and very easy, and she knows I don't like cooking when I have to babysit anything. I know she used bullion, when other suggestions were to put things like orange juice in the crock pot.

I know for a fact it was a Butterball turkey though. She said she went to Aldi and instead of getting the store brand stuff she got the Butterball. Not just because of the brand, but I believe she said the Aldi breast was super oversized and she thought it wouldn't fit in her crockpot.

Whatever she did, it was perfect. Like I said, it was moist the 2nd time and I nuked the dinner plate for 2.5 minutes without any cover on it. The turkey practically melted in your mouth when it was first served.
