Luckily enough no. The fire was a couple of streets down from me then two or three more streets over. Still from the news you could see it was nasty. The engines had to call in off duty fire fighters to help handle it. Not sure how many people lost their homes. The fire is being investigated as no resident could tell the fire department what happened.

At least it wasn't your building, Brenda. Bummer.

Yeah. We had quite a few houses burned down in our storms. Several of them not very far from me at all. I don't even know how that could have happened other than power lines snapping while still being live and lighting them up.

I never did get into the Electrician's Union because I didn't have a daddy to get me in there like my friend did, so I couldn't say for sure. But I would think that with all the Safety First mindset that's taken over everything, there probably should be a way to keep all of that from happening. And I would suspect that if it hadn't been done, it was only because the local power company was too cheap to implement it.

That is true SIX. I was talking to someone in my building who went down there to look at it. She said most of the top floor was on fire.

Never know it could be snapped power lines. Yeah, you would think power companies would learn but some just don't.

Finished for today. Got in from my walk and looked into the fridge and discovered I had forgotten something. So I went back out to get it. Now, sitting down.

Oh wow. That's bad. Apartment fires can kill a lot of people. I can't help thinking of Grenfell Tower fire.

It sounds like only two people were injured, tho, thankfully.

Here in LA, a lot of the old multistory apartment buildings were grandfathered in, not required to retrofit with fire sprinklers, and some have only one stairwell. I hope safety standards are better in your area, BRENDA!

Yeah, they can. They got lucky that only two were injured.

My building does have smoke detectors and alarms but I don't think there is a sprinkler system. There are two stairwells. The worry in the building is the people with walkers and scooters.

So hard reading fan fictions sometimes. Just read an Emergency story. Notes at the end said Randolph Mantooth died on July 9th at 80 years of age.

That was shocking to read and my heart is broken. Another one of my tv crushes gone.
2 years after David Soul and 2 1/2 years after David McCallum.

Hey Sigs... I know you don't have literally any free time, but if you ever do and you're bored, I think you should check out the couple of AI threads I made in the last day or two. There actually is some pretty fascinating stuff in there.

I don't know if you've looked at them at all, but I think the revelation that the AI itself is coded to view the words "Left" and "Nazi" as mutually exclusive terms and it will initially run in "defensive" mode when you call somebody on the left something that is politically charged. Also that it very well could be lying to me when I ask it if it is tracking me or putting me on a list for any of the inquiries that it generates and it says no. It straight up tells you not to believe anything that it says.

And I'm just lightly paraphrasing a whole lot of stuff here. It goes into DETAIL on how it operates. (Assuming it's not lying to me about all of it couldn't be a mistake, could it? ).

EDIT: I forgot that one of them didn't start out as an AI thread. Here's the threads I'm talking about:

Fun With Democrat Party Shit Rags and Hypocrisy: http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=67658

(It starts in the 2nd post when I just decided to ask Google AI for articles giving glowing praise to Platner)

Huh.

Well, I'll look into those!

*****

I dropped off the e-waste yesterday. Dear daughter dragged her *ss out of bed late, so I was already in a bit of a time crunch.

The drop off event was in an area that I've never been, but it was the closest one scheduled for the rest of the year. So I got messed up along the way bc I didn't notice that the longest road on my route actually changed names, and I thought I had missed a turn or something, went back, had to pull over and bring up goggle maps again, and turn back around. Then google maps directed me to a route I DIDN'T want to take. Once again had to pull over and confirm I was heading in the right direction. Tick tick tick...

But we made it in time, and I got to drive thru some really wealthy area in the Hacienda/ La Habra hills section, where the roads are all windy and its semi-rural and you can't see your neighbor for all the trees.

The canyons areas are green and lovely, the hilltops are also lovely in a drier, wilder, grassy sort of way, and it would be great to live there except for FIRE.
Nice to visit. We should go up there to enjoy the park and the scenery. But I'd sure worry about living there.

Yeah, they can. Any fire would mean rescues from balconies.

That fire in that building started at 1pm Friday and wasn't fully put out until around 2am Saturday morning. It looks like the building is a right off too.

Yes, David McCallum left this world in December of 2023 at 90 years of age.

I bought the complete set of Emergency DVDs when I was in Alberta last year and I am just about going to sit down and watch them. That will hurt.

Thanks SIX. Just in some ways rehashing my salad days.

I first watched David McCallum in "The Invisible Man" as a 8 year old I guess. I was fascinated that he could peel his skin off and be invisible. No one could see him. Then in High school with repeats of Man from U.N.C.L.E

David Soul and Randolph Mantooth came about around the same time. Starsky & Hutch came on around the same time as Emergency.

Never have totally figured out my attraction to David Soul. I know his music of course besides his acting but the acting was first.

But Randolph Mantooth, that is easy. Those black eyes and all that thick dark black hair. I've talked about him before being the first for me anyways seeing a Native American actor as a regular on an American tv series.

I can't really think of anybody I crushed on at any point that I thought much of later in life over the years, Brenda.

I think for me you'd have to go to musicians that I loved over the years to feel the same way. I remember not too long back we lost Tom Petty and Chris Cornell within a year of each other. That wasn't great. Just seeing how grey the guys I kind of idolized growing up when they are still around is sad too. Did you see any commercials for the new and supposedly final Jackass movie? My god man. Johnny Noxville is full on grey. Steve O looks like he's had more plastic surgery than Joan Rivers ever did.

I didn't have too much planned as far as working today, but then I remembered my Dad is coming by tomorrow to visit, so I got to cleaning things. It really wasn't too bad since it wasn't that long ago I did a pretty decent cleaning after the storm, so I was able to do a pretty deep clean on everything in my kitchen except for the fridge which isn't even bad.

Got a few loads of laundry done and still going now. Finally sorted that huge mountain of clean clothes and towels and stuff and got everything put away. Dusted down the entire master bedroom and vacuumed it and the hallway. Threw out some ratty work clothes that are past their due date and a pair of shoes as well. Got the 2nd chair for my 2-seater table finally down in the kitchen and gave it a really good wipe down. Entire living room is spotless now except for a pile of mail I need to go through.

Not sure what else I'll get done, but I do have time to burn for right now anyhow waiting on 1.5 more loads of laundry to finish.

I think dehoarding is actually going to be my next focus. I still have a huge mess to clean up in the basement as far as tools and bits and paint stuff and crap all over my sawhorses with sawdust on it too. It's just hard for me to focus on the real jobs I need to be doing on the house with all this clutter and crap. It really needs to go this time. I need to know where all my stuff is, be able to get to it when I need it, and not have to be wasting a half an hour here and an hour there looking for a tool that I've got 3 of but have no idea where any of them are anymore. I wonder if this has slowly been grinding my work to a halt too. Just making things so hard to even start because who knows where anything is anymore.

For not having much planned, you got a lot done SIX!

I spent a fair bit of the day pecking away at the stuff in the junk room/ office. I got 9 medium -sized boxes packed up, a couple of rugs to roll up, and another sweep thru closets and cabinets and desks and all those little hidey- holes where people leave things to be forgotten. Fortunately I scheduled a pickup for the 30th so I ca do a real.giid decluttering.

By then I expect another few boxes to give away, a trash can or two, and some recycling. I have one bucket for metal (steel, pot metal) recycling and another for brass/ bronze 'cause dear daughter is all about recycling!

I hear you about not knowing where stuff is!

You've been plugging away yourself. Good for you.

Yeah.. It's bad enough I can't find stuff to start a job, but when things are that messy you just put things down and then you can't find them in the mess. Got a lot of work to do in that room in the basement to get things organized, and out in the garage as well. I've got to remember to bring one of my shop vacs back in the house. I have a tiny hand-held one in here, but I've got my mid-size, large and super-large one all out in the garage at the same time. I cleaned all of my vacs and shop vacs maybe 2 springs ago and never brought anything back in when I was done. Got a lot of sawdust to clean up down there, and it will be good just to vac up that entire room as I organize things.

Got a few more things thrown away and found a few nice finds in the clothes. I forgot my friend gave me some brand new long thermal undershirts and some hats and other stuff late last winter, and for some reason my dad gave me a few bags of new socks. One of the big bags was two comforters I got from my friend. I just found 4 zip up bags meant to be put under a bed, so I think I know where those are going.

I think half of the bags left to go through are suits and coats of varying quality and condition. I took everything he was getting rid of just to help him get rid of his own hoard, so I'm sure half of that can go immediately. Probably into the trash.

Forgot I still had a lot of bags in there from the free after rebate stuff at the hardware store. I'll have to sort through that and see what I've got and what I'll give away.

I think if I do anything else tonight I'll clean the bathroom since I still haven't gotten to that while doing all this other stuff.

All my laundry is done and everything is put away. Honestly, I don't even know the last time I can say that was the case.

I didn't think that Jackass would be your thing, but I've got a picture in my mind of what Johnny Knoxville looks like and it is from about the year 2002. When I saw him the other day in the trailer for this new one, my jaw dropped. It's the first time they said it's the last movie they're going to do that I believe them.

Yeah... Petty was the man. We got a channel called XRT in Chicago that plays a great rotation. They'll have one or two of the new songs every hour, but they also play a lot of great rock from the 60's through today, so you never know what you're going to get every hour. I bet every day they play at least 2 Petty songs and probably about 15 of them in the rotation. It's such a cool station.

Change of plans...

Haven't touched the bathroom yet, but I did a lot of cleanup in the small bedroom. I found 8 lint rollers with those peel away sticky pads on them just earlier today, and after I got all the clothes off of it along with some other stuff, I rubbed down the futon real good with one of those and it looks brand new. Had my awesome little Shark stick vacuum and it gets almost anywhere with the crazy angles it does. I had my old livingroom coffee table up there too. I had replaced that when I got my Grams' table.

So while I was cleaning I did a little fung shui and moved things around so now the coffee table is in front of the futon at a different angle that makes sense. I've decided that's going to be my "tech" room for the dehoard. Whenever I want to go through old tech, I'll have a monitor on that coffee table I can plug everything into and go through the stack at my leisure once I get all the other crap dehoarded and out of there, and I get all that stuff down from the attic. That way none of this is in my main living area and the spot where people would first see it when they walked in. If I get messy with it, I can always just shut that door until I get it all cleaned up.

Still might do a little of the bathroom tonight, but probably going to save most of that for tomorrow before my old man stops by and I'll shower up. Got some things to do after he's gone too.

Yeah, you still a lot of celebs getting botox and things and now it is the men more than the women. I heard it's suppose to be the last Jackass movie and you are right not my thing.

Petty was good for sure. This station I listen to do has a good play list until they hit idiots redoing songs that were good in the first place and they trash them. "I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney has been redone and they love playing that one and it has been trashed. The idiot has sped up the tempo and it throws the whole song off. But they do play some good Beatles stuff. Course you can pretty well always get "Sweet Home Alabama" and some stuff from Miami Vice too.

I really wish the PM function worked here. Though I'm sure some of them wouldn't suit either of your personal tastes, but I've got a pretty wide range of videos I've created over the last few years. Not a ton, but what there is is pretty varied. Almost all comedy and satire, or at least what I feel are funny attempts at them, anyhow.

I made a few the other day, which is one more than I usually make in 3 months since I only do it when the inspiration hits. Half the time it's when I'm talking with my old man about something going on in the world and inspiration suddenly hits.

And only 2 days later, I'm making another one. 3 in as many days if I finish it before I go to sleep. It's the one I had planned on spending all day and night yesterday on until I remembered my dad was coming over today and I had way better things to be doing with my time.

Now THIS is fun. What I'm doing isn't nothing that AI couldn't replace soon, with all the soul of a hunk of metal and wires, so I know there's zero money in it like most of the things I'm interested in. But on the off chance I ever put out anything that goes viral, I don't care for the idea of me being able to be tracked back to Ted Bundy and Shit Golem.

I'm going to be up all night working on this thing. And it's not even going to feel like work.

Wow...

Most times things never go smoothly... That's just life.

I've been getting really good at synchronizing things happening on video along with different audio, particularly music. I just seem to have a real knack for it, and it's something I enjoy doing.

In this particular instance I had about 35 minutes worth of video that I needed to use only about 3 minutes and 30 seconds.

And Here I was plugging away at the beginning, not even having had watched the full 35 minute video to see how the thing ended (meaning I had no idea how my own video ended either), and I was doing my usual perfectionist stuff. Move it this way, move it that way. Test and retest again until you get it right. It's almost like tuning a guitar string, in a way.

Hopping through the video after I got one segment perfect to see what else was available and what I could cut before I moved on.

And then something magical happened...

The last maybe 2 minutes were just PERFECT as is. I didn't have to change a thing and everything just worked right up until the end. Nothing like this has ever happened to me working on videos like this.

I figured I had at least 3 hours left before I finished that step and I'm already done.

More steps to do, but that probably was the longest one overall. Unfortunately, when my computer took a crap, all of my templates I had made were not saved along with them. I may have them in my backups... I'm hoping I do, or in order to start the next step I'm going to have to re-teach myself a few things I've already forgotten first.

ETA: Oh man...

And going back and watching the first draft video, it's a wrap. There happen to be two very amusing coincidences between the words being spoken and what's happening on the screen at the time they're said, I couldn't have planned it better.

If I go viral, I'll send you a postcard from whatever place I settle in that isn't cold and dead half the year around.

Yeah, it is. I've gotten into the habit of letting it go until I can sit on it then lop of a inch or so along with the tie that is in it and now is the time. But I need some different ties. Will head into the dollar store.

That's funny you mention that. During the movie shelter, there's a part where the girl puts her hair up with a rubber band. And I said "OW" and my dad's like "what?". I said I've had long hair quite a few times and you NEVER tie it up with a rubber band because it gets all twisted with the hair and you'll be pulling some strands out.

You ever try that?

Got most of my old tech down from the basement today and staged near the future work area for that stuff that I put together in the small bedroom. I'm not going to look at any of that stuff as things that need to be done immediately or with any rush. Since the area is clean, and there's a couch and coffee table to work on over there, I'm just going to leave all the stuff I need to work on in the boxes stacked on the side behind the door and out of site from the hallway for now. That sounds to me like a winter project and/or something to be doing in between downtime when I start working again. No reason to be wasting summer and fall on any of that as long as it's all staged and I know what needs to be gone through.

I think after I get all that tech down, I'll sort of look through what's still up there and pre-sort it, and I'll work on all those clothes and other things already down in the small bedroom before I take anything else down to sort through.

More brutally hot weather by us right now. Between that, the storms and the amount of rain, this is by far the worst summer I can remember in at least a decade around here.

98 was the high today, with the low only dipping to 73 tonight. 95 tomorrow with a 75 degree low. High of 92 on Thursday and finally back into the low 80's on Friday, although the lows at night never seem to go below 70 until Monday night next week. And because of all of that rain, it feels like the air is pushing back against you when you move outside. It's like a Georgia summer here.

Gross.

Yeah, I've done that few times when I was younger and yeah ow! for sure.

But even with the cloth covered ones that they put out today your hair can still get caught in them and again, ow! The reason being there is that there is still elastic under the material.

I got a little bit cleaned up in the basement. Not really cleaned, but everything that was in my way was moved in the back room where it all needs to be sorted through and cleaned up. That way I could get my horses back into position above the plastic sheet I have protecting the floor from any paint drips. That all had to be pulled up and on the horses a while back because of the water, but it's all good. No mold or garbage or anything. Nice.

Had to get my 4'x4' sheet of wood off 2 of them too. I was using that to paint the cabinets and doors and such, and it's just in the way when I need to paint bi-fold doors, so that's safely out of the finished room and resting on some studs in the other room. Should probably think about getting all of that just out of the house for now just in case we still have any flooding this year.

I still had to take the hinges and screws off one of the doors since I forgot to do that outside, so I've got some crap to clean off the wood that was beneath them before I can start priming. No big deal.

I have to decide if I'm going to give the hinges for the other 3 bi-fold doors on the 2nd floor closets that I'd already finished years ago. The hinges look like crap on those. They were all chrome and since I never removed them with painting, they've got paint on them too. You can't really tell since I don't have walk-in closets. You never see 90% of the hinges because you'd never be inside the closet with the doors closed, and it would be dark even if you did. The only thing you see is just the rounded parts in between both segments of the door when you open them.

I'd hate to leave them like that, but really that's so much extra work for almost no payoff other than scratching an OCD itch.

I'll be taking the door down from the small linen closet across from the bathroom, since that's going to match the other solid door I'm working on now that will go in the small bedroom closet, and the lone bi-fold with louvers that I'm going to be working on now will replace that on the linen closet. So I will do the hinges on that if I don't think I'll screw the paint job up by doing it after the fact. Maybe I'll see how that goes before I decide if I want to go to the trouble for the master bedroom hinges.

It's a good time to be doing all of this, because that spray paint has been waiting for me for a while now. It seems to still work fine, but I don't want to let them sit around unused forever and go bad on me. A LOT of it is some off brand primer and paint I got for free after rebate years ago. It's great stuff that I've made good use of so far, but I really need to make sure I get the main things I wanted to do with it done. That's the 6 circular ceiling vents for the furnace, the 2 large rectangular wall vents for the 2 basement rooms, and the cover and door of my electrical box which is going to be painted white instead of grey to match the trim in my house. I've got to trim out the wall all around the electrical box and the network box anyhow, so I think it will blend in nicely.

I doubt very much I'll actually start doing any of that painting tonight, but who knows? I slept most of the day away getting some catch up sleep I obviously needed in the heat, so maybe I'll get to it after all.

Hot here too, but at least it's not steamy. I've been doing indoor work for the time being.

Today was "yapping Chihuahuas" day ... give the dog a bath, clip her nails (she hates!) and put some Advantage on her to keep the fleas down, check the grocery ads, write up a weekly menu and grocery list, start deep-watering the avocados, water and feed the indoor plants, give hubby a haircut and beard trim, call in some refills ...

Tomorrow I think I'm going to sort the mail and go back to sorting stuff in the office while hubby takes dear daughter grocery shopping. And maybe some vacuuming.

You're getting a lot done too, Sigs. You feel like you're catching up on anything yet? Sounds like you've always got a hundred and one things to do.

I actually did get to painting tonight. Nothing much so far, but got one face of both parts of the solid bi-fold door primed right now.

I'm glad I got to it now, because that primer was going bad. About maybe 1/6th of a gallon I still had left in the old one. That thing has been opened and closed many, many times over the last few years. The lid was on tight, but there must have been enough of a gap in there somewhere for the primer to curdle somewhat since the last time I used it maybe a month ago. It's not too bad, but it's pretty thick. The only bad part is the "chunks" on occasion that I have to take out with my fingers. It's one thing painting solid doors with this, but I'm worried about doing lovers with it and getting crud caked in them unless I'm really making sure I'm not leaving any of that residue behind.

I don't really feel like getting my drill mixer out for the new gallon of primer tonight, and doing all that running up and down stairs. I'll do what I can with this stuff and save that for the daytime. Hopefully I'll get the louvered doors done with this stuff and it won't be that bad.

Got one side of one of the louvered doors. Can't really tell how much longer it's taking because of the condition of the primer, but these take a while to work on. I should be able to get the other door, but at that point I think I should probably just throw the rest of this stuff away and just start the new bucket.

Glad I decided to do this right now. I think working on these, on the shelf I'm going to be painting black to sit atop my TV stand for when I get a 75" TV, and all the stuff I'm going to be spray painting is a good way to spend the time right now in between dehoarding the rest of the crap in the small bedroom. That way I'll still be getting house stuff done to, but more of the finishing touches than the 2 major projects I still want to have done by winter. I can get my house in order and still be doing house projects at the same time, and making much better use of drying time in between the coats.

I cut my own hair too, but it's pretty short. I hate it on my neck, especially in summer, so I bunch a ponytail at my back hairline and whack it off.

I can imagine louvers would be horrible to do with thickened paint, and difficult to do in any case. Let me know how it works out.
