A true American Hero, has been laid to rest!!!
He personified what it should mean to serve not only my country, but any countries's armed services ie with honor, compassion, bravery, and the willingness to save lives of not only your men, but of those of Civilians. It is a saddness and dishonor to this man, that his story and bravery took so long to be recongnised and appricated for what it is. The My Lai Massacacre was and is a stain of dishonor, but by remembering it and working not only with in the military ranks, but also as civilian Americans to make sure that it is not repeated again!!!! Ne Obliviscaris (Do not forget!!!) minna san wa kore no story o wasure masen ne!!!
mata, Ookami yori

Time to wake the boys and start another gorram picket shift here.

It's a shame that there's a need for heroes like him. Saving civilians from being massacred by one's own troops, especially if those troops are in the country to spread "freedom" and "peace" (the two things it inevitably comes down to for American politicians, no matter who the particular enemy may be), is a really sad state of affairs. Not to mention the sort of abuse he took from the military afterwards.

Two things about the story strikes me

" was once told by a congressman that he was the only American who should be punished over My Lai. "

Is that the attitude you political leaders have ? what happened to the bozo who said that anyway ?

" A platoon commander, Lt William Calley, was later court-martialed and sentenced to life in prison for his role in the killings.

President Richard Nixon commuted his sentence to three years' house arrest. "

So by that precident, perhaps all the people the Americans have locked away in Cuba and elsewhere should have their... ( sentence can't be the right word ) reduced to the same or less.

Well, I'm all right. - Mal

If Colonel Oran Henderson was correct that "Every unit of brigade size has its My Lai hidden someplace", there could have been up to 2000 My Lai like incidents in Vietnam.

RIP to this hero!

As far as every brigade having such an event happen, I believe that is total BS - after having spoken with many who served there.

Really? You mean they didn't say "Oh yeah, we slaughtered villagers every day. For fun."

Well, obviously they couldn't have been lying.

Thompson was a good man, as were his crew, Colburn and Andreotta. But they were the rule, not the exception.

Really. You’re a murderer and a rapist. If you deny it, obviously, it can only be because you’re lying.

Welcome to Fruitcakesville; I think you just made yourself a resident.

There are two sources you can go by when it comes to those things:

those who were there and those who weren't but who have an agenda to fulfil in their depiction of the events.

I believe that evil things happen during war time. That doesn't mean that I believe the majority of my neighbors, relatives who fought, etc are all lying when they say they never saw such events and that such things were an exception, not a rule.

Even people like John Kerry who claimed (under oath) that they saw such events with their own eyes have since recanted and admitted they never did.

DREAMTROVE

I'm going to weigh in here. There was a lot of this stuff. Anyone who is going head to head against people like Howard Zinn is going to be fighting a losing battle. This is what happens when you fight all-or-nothing ideological ground wars with millions of foot soldiers in desperate conditions, ie. what happens if you elect a democrat for president. It's happening in Iraq now, to a lesser degree because we're less over-stretched, but if Kerry were in charge now, we'd have conscription, at least the 500,000 men he promised in Iraq, possibly 1 million in the total Arena, which would include the invasion of Iran he and Bush both hinted at. The drag our conflict would be stretching the American threshold of control of the common soldier to the breaking point and chaos would spread through our ranks.

That said, Bush is also really appalling, let's get rid of him, but let's make sure we replace him with something better, not worse. A lot of people are saying "oh, worst president ever" but they just haven't take a close enough look at other presidents. He might be the worst republican ever, but lincoln and hoover also shots at that title.

The best way to not have atrocities and massacring of civilians is never have large scale conflicts, particularly ones not well planned out in advance. Iraq, like Vietnam, is basically being fought by 'winging it.' This is never good.
