I'm not sure Gov. Romney has a snowball's chance. I can't remember the numbers, but there was a poll taken several months ago that showed that Mormons were ranked right up there with atheists on the ole' trust meter in the US (no offense LDS people). They were also shown to be heavily distrusted by the Evangelical community, a key Republican constituency. It might be tough for some Republicans to get past Gov. Romney's faith in the primaries.

The good and bad news is the Republicans look like they might be taking a pragmatic approach to the upcoming Presidential election. Democrats look to be, most certainly, heading in the opposite direction.

Of course, these aren't all primary voters who tend to be activists and a touch on the extreme side. It also doesn't consider the primary schedule. An upset win early on for any of these people could really swing the numbers. Oh yeah, and the election is a couple of years from now...

Voters don't see Allen as president

...In a new survey conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, more than half of the Virginia voters polled said they would not consider voting for Allen if he gets the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. Only 37 percent said Allen should even try for the job.

Voters appear more enthusiastic about a possible presidential bid by former Gov. Mark Warner, a Democrat who has been traveling the country to increase his profile and help his party's congressional candidates in the midterm elections. In the poll, 54 percent said Warner should run for president and 56 percent said they would consider voting for him if he gets the Democratic nomination...

...Allen, a former governor, finds himself in a tougher-than-expected race to win a second term in the Senate. A Mason-Dixon survey published Sunday has Allen leading Democrat James Webb by just 4 percentage points after holding a 16-point lead in late July...

If Senator Allen can't win his home state, he should just throw in the towel...
