ACTA is a new trade agreement being discussed in secret with a view to being signed at this years G8. It enforces a IP protection regime on signatories that does an end run around national government copyright laws and enforcement --- for example, the treaty enforces copyright rules rejected by the European parliament last year as well as making certain activity including rights previously established illegal.

This could effect your rights to rip your own CD's to your Ipod, own DVD equipment able to play out of region content even the ability to record shows off air.

Most importantly it gives customs enforcement the right to inspect your PC, PDA and cell phone at the border for "infringing content." Right now they have the right to do so if you come to their attention for other reasons, this could make these searches routine (given time constraints they are likely to copy your device then notify you on infractions later, would you like the government to have a copy of everything on your laptop?)

On the internet it could shut down a variety of legitimate functions including the anonymous proxy servers used by many in places like China to bypass government restrictions.

Enjoy!

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

From the EFF site:

"A document recently leaked to the public entitled "Discussion Paper on a Possible Anti-counterfeiting Trade Agreement" from an unknown source and with an unclear status, includes a number of detailed proposals -- including new legal regimes to "encourage ISPs to cooperate with right holders", criminal measures, and increased border search powers, and raises considerable concerns for citizens' civil liberties and privacy rights."

And here it is.

Why stop at border searches?

With global laws like this in place, they could just search your computer any time it's turned on and connected to the internet, right?

Just a few more dropplets of piss on the Constitution and it's a done deal. Easy peasey... Japanessey
