Excellent rant in this "librul, eleet" diary:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/7/1/194636/4695/50/545056

So, does being a prisoner of war automatically make you the best-qualified candidate for the presidency? If your answer was "Hmmm, probably not" or maybe even "No", well, you un-American, terrorist-loving, swift-boating scumbag obviously haven't been watching enough of the MSM lately! Let the truthiness begin:

Yeah, if only the McChurian candidate felt all vets were owed as much as he thinks he is owed, maybe they wouldn't account for more than a quarter of all homeless in this country.

Yeah, nice of him and Bush to try to take credit for the new GI Bill, too - despite the fact that they both fought tooth and nail AGAINST giving benefits to the troops that they "support".

I guess "support our troops" means something darkly different to Rethuglicans.

Keep the Shiny side up

Excellent editing on the Youtube video.

Then again, Gen. Clark should have had more sense than to come up with the “Well, I don’t think riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be president.” remark. Even if true, it sounds mean-spirited, and almost as if being shot down disqualifies McCain. There's no way the media weren't going to be all over him.

heh, I don't totally disagree with you Geezer,

and when I heard it out of context I thought Clark had put his foot in it even if he was being candid as a war veteran himself.

In context he merely repeated what the interviewer just said to him and then said that getting shot down doesn't qualify you to be President. So in context, it wasn't the way he was trying to frame the argument, but that is the way that it and he got framed by the media.

John Kerry was in Nam. McCain blew it in Ohio. Yeh, tell them union boys man that NAFTA is great. Free Trade. GM stock now under 10 bucks. The republicans are driven right off the tracks with McCain. Its like they wanna give it up. They gotta take Ohio. Maybe higher taxes are inevitable. Yeh so lets take a dive. The two headed snake.

Most Americans would say McCain is due every bit and more of the kidd gloves Kerry was given for his service. If Weasel Clark can praise Kerry for seeing action, then he sure as hell better do the same for McCain, or simply shut the hell up.

But he did praise him. Repeatedly. Just like Obama has. Saying that being shot down and taken captive doesn't prepare one for executive office is in no way belittling McCain's service, even if the media wants people to think that. It's just stating an obvious fact that a lot of people don't seem to grasp.

He belittled McCain by stating he was " riding along" like he was some hapless member of an wayward Oceanic flight. It's the same as if Kerry simply " gathered up" 3 Purple Hearts, and that some how makes him a shoe in for Presidency. No one ever suggested that nonsense, but what Weasel has done was OVER state the obvious so as to obscure the fact that Obama never served, and that standing next to a bona fide war hero like McCain, impressions may be swayed.

No, he said "riding in", and he said it like that because that's how Bob Schieffer phrased it. Listen to the first half minute of the video, then you'll hear what Clark actually said, not what the media told you he said.

Plus he didn't OVERstate the obvious. As it was, it was a simple statement of fact, I can't think of a clearer way of saying it. Also, that what he said is obvious is unfortunately not a given, otherwise McCain wouldn't be referring to his POW experience every chance he gets (and claiming he hates talking about it and doesn't want to use it for political purposes - lol, yeah right).

Dunno which planet you've been on , but to accuse McCain of bringing up his POW experience every chance he gets is beyond hyperbole. He RARELY ever brings it up, unlike Kerry, who brought up his 'Nam service at a drop of a hat.

"Hi, I'm John Kerry, and I served in Vietnam "

And I heard the interview, so don't try to spin it for what it wasn't.

I certainly appreciate the sacrifice of anyone who's had to go through it, but I don't think being tortured as a prisoner of war is a 'qualification' for political office. It's kind of like saying someone who was beat as a child would be a great grade school principal. If anything, it's a negative.

Let's face it, torture is a damaging experience. It leaves permanent scars on the psyche of anyone unfortunate enough to go through it. I'd honestly be a little uneasy giving the reigns to someone who's experienced such trauma.

I'm not saying that the fact that McCain was a prisoner of war disqualifies him by any means, but I have a hard time seeing it as net positive. Sure, give him his just respect and appreciation. I just don't think it's a good reason to elect a leader.

I seem to be remember him doing it quite often. In fact, that's the only thing I'm sure everybody knows about him. He's flip-flopped on the issues so often that I have no idea where he stands on them this week, but his POW experience is the one thing that absolutely everybody knows about.

If that's true, then what does that say about your response? Who's the bigger fool, the fool, or the fool that follows the fool? Face it, your're just desperate now to try to find something you like about MCain, after despising him for years over his RINO aciviies & Ted Kennedy policy deals. One year ago, Republicans would have danced in the streets with glee if he had left the Party, like Liebermann leaving the Dems. Republicans absolutely hated McCain, but now since he's the last of the smarmy lot of candidates standing, now you love him. Now he's the great candidate. Hah! What a pathetic, hypocritical joke!

Serving in the military, or not, shouldn't be an issue for political office one way or the other. I don't think a single member of our cabinet has served, but even if they have the fact I don't know shows it's not an issue here I think.

The fact that it does seem to be an issue worthy of discussion in the States would be, for me at least, a worrying sign of militarism.

Your 'white' remarks about McCain teeter on the edge of being racist. Had I said so and so was the blackest man I've ever seen , he looks like a tar baby ", that would be equally inane. As with your remark, it's a line which is void of any substance, what so ever. Yeah, McCain has white hair, so what ? He's in better physical shape than most folks 20 yrs younger.

And why do I " have to love " McCain ? He simply is the better choice of the 2 left. Doesn't mean I crown him King, does it? Is that how YOUR mind works ? If so, then that explains much.

While I don't watch all of the speeches etc, the only times I have seen McCain bring up the POW / Torture experiences, it was while he was being critical of the current admins policy's on the same subject.

On those points I think it is a net positive to have a voice of reason who has been on the other end of the bullshit, just to try to bring some of the coke snortin asshole wanta cowboys back to reality.

But hey

Last one first...I heard exactly what Gen Weasel said, and your take on it is simply wrong. It's you who deliberately misrepresenting what he said.

McCain has been a public figure for well over 20 yrs, so , over that time span, the issue of him being held as a POW will come up a few times, but hardly EVER because of him. Same goes for his alleged flip flops. Folks can change position, over time, but does that make it always a flip flop? No. That term is too often used by folks who want to tarnish a politician. True flip floppers, like Kerry , deserve the tag. McCain does not.

LOL LOL LOL LOL PMSL!!!

As far as I know, this was the first major television ad by his presidential campaign. This is how he wants to be seen by the nation:

http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/Multimedia/Player.aspx?guid=56ae4c
45-68b0-4b6f-a1b4-b49d06fda9ab

You need to also pay attention to his speeches. In so many speeches of his, there's a reference to his Vietnam experiences, or his experiences as a POW, or how much he sacrificed in his service for his country. Sometimes subtle, sometimes blatant, but almost always there to remind the voters that he's a war hero and he's been through a lot, so they should vote for him.

and here:

Something from 2006, to show that flip-flopping isn't entirely new:

Loads more, but actually, it's a simple Google search, try it yourself! It's fun!

Edit to add:

There's also a master list: http://www.bi30.org/wordpress/flipflopper.htm

Tell me, how was Kerry a flip-flopper and how was that completely different from McCain flip-flopping?
