Now for something completely different for the Real World.

I've been watching the swimming from the Beijing Olympics and I had the thought that Micheal Phelps's arms are as big as an albatross. In fact, I've been calling him "Albatross Arms" lately.

He proved it last night when he won by 1/100th of a second by using his arms to out touch his rival in the 100m butterfly.

Although probably an apt name, it's already been taken by another swimmer, though it's been over 20 yrs. Then W.German swimmer Michael Gross was dubbed 'The Albatross' for his excessive wing span of 2.13 meters, or nearly 7 feet.

Gross stands at 6'7", while Phelps is only 6'4".

But go Phelps!!! USA!!

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

I'd heard something that sounded a bit negative and bitter from Mark Spitz a few days ago, where he was a bit peeved that he wasn't even invited to the games, where he wanted to be the one who put the eighth gold medal around Phelps's neck if he won. The reporting was along the lines of "Do they know who the hell I am?" kind of slant, so I just wanted to share this:

Spitz hails Phelps' `epic' 7 gold medals
By STEPHEN WILSON – 10 hours ago
BEIJING (AP) — Mark Spitz had one word for the performance that gave Michael Phelps his seventh gold medal of the Beijing Games and equaled his own Olympic record that had stood for 36 years.
"Epic," Spitz said Saturday morning when reached by The Associated Press in Detroit, where his youngest son was playing in a basketball tournament.
Moments earlier, Phelps came from behind to win the 100-meter butterfly, edging Croatia's Milorad Cavic by a hundredth of a second.
"It goes to show you that not only is this guy the greatest swimmer of all time and the greatest Olympian of all time, he's maybe the greatest athlete of all time," Spitz said. "He's the greatest racer who ever walked the planet."
With the victory, the 23-year-old from Baltimore pulled even with Spitz's seven-gold haul at the 1972 Munich Games. Phelps can break the record in his final race on Sunday, the 400 medley relay.
Spitz sounded almost giddy on the other end of the phone line.
"I'm ecstatic," he said. "I always wondered what my feelings would be. I feel a tremendous load off my back. Somebody told me years ago you judge one's character by the company you keep, and I'm just happy to be in the company of Michael Phelps. That's the bottom line."
"I'm so proud of what he's been able to do," Spitz added. "I did what I did and it was in my day in those set of circumstances. For 36 years it stood as a benchmark. I'm just pleased that somebody was inspired by what I had done. He's entitled to every second of what's occurring to him now."
Spitz said he had considered it a "foregone conclusion" that Phelps would equal his record, especially since he won six golds at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
And now he fully expects Phelps to make it 8-for-8 on Sunday with a win in the relay.
"The Americans have never lost that race since it's been an event in the Olympic Games," Spitz said. "You have to be very cautious on the relay exchanges and make sure nobody gets disqualified, but it should be just a matter of what the time is going to be and who's going to put the gold medal around their neck first."

He's one of Phelps's biggest fans, and he has said from the outset that he'd be honored to have his mark eclipsed by such a fantastic athlete and swimmer.

As someone who watched in awe as Spitz won his medals in Munich in '72, it's a treat to see Phelps equal that mark, and possibly surpass it. I'm almost giddy with anticipation about seeing history being made.

I think Spitz gets a bum rap by most , mainly because they don't really know him. He's not the most outgoing, gregarious type of individual, and so when the public sees him talk, it comes across as all serious, bitter and with a chip on his shoulder. Not to directly compare one to the other, but Nancy Carrigan comes to mind. Many wanted to see her as a smiling, happy, cheerleader type of personality, when that's not her at all. When everyone saw a different side of her ( remember her remarks caught on mic when she was riding in a DIsney parade ) it wasn't what many had expected, and the backlash was fairly harsh.

It's a dicey situation, honoring the potential winner in Phelps and giving him his due while paying respect to the man who's held the phenomenal achievement of 7 Golds in 1 Olympics for 36 years. While the IOC and Chinese are probably the ones who SHOULD have taken the lead here, more realistically it falls upon the USOC ( I'm just guessing here ) . But that can cause problems if the UISOC is seen some how encroaching on Beijing's stage, promoting 1 American breaking another American's Olympic record during China's first Olympics.

And Spitz might be in a no win situation. If he doesn't do or say anything, he might falsely be accused of being bitter and resentful. If he takes it upon himself to fly over there, some might ( again, falsely ) accuse him of wanting to steal some of Phelp's spot light.

Albatross is not the term I'd use.

The real scandal here is the Phelps is clearly under age.

AURaptor, I don't care how successful he was as an athlete, please please please don't ever post a picture of a guy in speedos again.

Everybody knows that only non-Americans can be under age.

That speedo pic of Spitz is pretty damned funny - and he elected to KEEP his porno mustache when he swam, instead of shaving down like all the other swimmers (except for the East German women of the time, who were even hairier than Spitz!).

How about "Gooney Bird" then? Michael Phelps has HUGE feet.

I also agree with the No Speedos, except for the cute American sychronized diver the other night. I didn't catch his name but he's real young looking, 40% deaf and ripped.

Oh to be in my early 20's again!

He just went gold for the eighth time in this Olympics!

How 'bout we call him "Flipper" - because of his big feet (actually, I shouldn't say anything, because I'm a size 16 myself) AND his speed in the water?

... or maybe we should make that "Phlipper" :D

Yay MIchael!!

First, I wanna say I tried to post a pic of Spits from the waste up, but the pic didn't work. This was the best I could do on such short notice, wanting to show the medals and all.

Second, I'm surprised he doesn't have some sort of nick name already. Watching the Costas interview, MP looks like an average, run of the mill geeky American young male. In contrast, I think Natalie Coughlin looks like a cheerleader, a definite hottie. Which is , I must admit, rare in most world class female swimmers.
