I am finding it very amusing that a man who thinks his running mates proximity to Russia constitutes foreign policy experience keeps saying that Obama is naive.

Hello,

I did not like it when Obama pointed out what he considered to be missteps in Afghanistan, and Mccain responded that Obama had rarely visited Afghanistan.

Okay... So? He did not adequately address his position, instead leaning on frequent flier miles.

An analogy might be if a physicist described the structure of an atom, and someone commented, "Have you ever seen an atom?"

Well, no. But does that invalidate the physicists position?

Hello,

I always feel like 'a crazy' when the issue of the Iranian nuclear program comes up. Am I the only one who doesn't think it's our business if they want to develop nuclear capability? Am I the only one who thinks we have no moral right to limit the technological advancements of other nations?

Am I also the only one who thinks Israel can take care of themselves?

Apparently the Dems and Repubs are unified on the idea of denying nuclear development to Iran, but I just can't agree with that stance.

Hello again,

Talking to anyone, everyone, at any time seems like a pretty good standard diplomatic position to me.

Why is Mccain treating dialogue like capitulation? How can you ever hope to sway someone's ideas without talking?

Indeed, isn't this very debate an example of two opposing sides entering into a moderated dialogue for the purpose of finding truth?

Well, it ought to be.

I have lost all respect for McCain. He comes off as a petulant child. He is snide and dismissive and a liar. He lies! His statement that he could "Guarantee" that Kissenger did not say that has shown how completely out or the realm of reality McCain has become. Of Course he said it! I have seen the video!

But his attempt to paint Obama as a naive idiot is insulting. Especially when his campaign has been calling him an elitest intellectual all this time.

No

I have great respect for anyone that has served in the military, and up until this campaign I found McCain to be a seemingly honest and honorable man with great integrity. While I do not like his stance on many issues, I did not have a great dislike of the man. Now however he has seemed to throw all of his honor and integrity out the window. The tenor of his comapaign has continued to sink into the gutter. His choice of Palin as his running mate has proven that his is more concerned with winning the Presidency than with the health and welfare of this nation.

It ain't just you, Tony. I'm not a fan of nuclear proliferation, but I find it odd who we think should be "allowed" to have nukes. I've heard it over and over again: "We can't allow a Muslim nation to possess nuclear weapons." Except that, apparently, we CAN allow it, because Pakistan is an Islamic nation that possesses nuclear weapons.

The main point of the argument against Iran getting nuclear weapons seems to be that Iran's very first action if they acquire a nuke would be to launch it at Israel - an action which would absolutely guarantee that Iran would be wiped off the face of the map in very short order. Think about it - if you possessed such a weapon, would the first thing you do be the one thing that virtually guarantees that your nation, your people, your culture itself would be forever wiped from the pages of history?

I also note for the record that only one nation in the history of the world has ever used nuclear weapons on another nation. So we don't exactly have a sterling claim to the moral high ground as regards nuclear weapons, do we?

I really did not like Obama's stance vs Pakistan,

this isn't like Vietnam and cross borders attacks into Laos and Cambodia, we and talking about a country with a large military, nuclear weapons and a shaky government who has been walking a tightrope between helping the US and alienating the large number of people who want yankee to get the hell out and go home.

Public cross border attacks could very well start a civil war, and turn Pakistan into something like 1979 Iran...

I was hoping McCain would fail so completely that he would throw himself on his sword. But he didn't, allowing pro McCain folks to rationlize all his appeals to emotion and fear.

I learned nothing. But I'm far more disturbed about a lack of ability to identify enough programs/wars/spending cuts from either candidate to adequatly address the whole economic nightmare we, and one of these candidates, will be enduring. Maybe neither of thier handlers will let them identify those on "inefficient" spending death row until they've voted. I think the war in Iraq is a pretty damn inefficient program myself.

Gino, McCain didn't criticize Obama for having that position, but for saying it "out loud". He'd do the same, and I'm not sure if it's necessarily wrong. Pakistan has gotten around $10 billion or something like that and still hasn't done a thing in the problem border regions except throw some grenades every now and again.

Mal:

I agree - I can't believe that Obama wouldn't address NOT starting any new wars as a great start at saving money, and maybe getting the hell out of Iraq might help, too.

All in all, it just seemed like more of the same, with neither candidate really saying much of anything, but trying to (a) not say anything remarkably stupid, and (b) not blurt out "Oh, horseshit!" at the other guy - which would have made for much more entertaining viewing, in my opinion.

I certainly would have liked to see Obama a bit more on the attack, especially on McCain's record (or lack of a coherent record), but he chose to go the John Kerry route, which is NOT a smart move.

I'm sorry, but the time for nice is over. Attack the old fart; beat his ass and send him home crying.

Of course, then he'd be labeled a "bully" - or worse - by the right.

The key to strikes across the border into Pakistan is to make damned sure that our fingerprints aren't on them. WE don't strike, but we make damn sure that the strike is carried out. That leaves us happy with the result, and the Pakistanis can't legitimately bitch to us about it, because we weren't officially there. Everybody's happy, except the Taliban and Al Qaeda, who are dead.

The best clandestine ops are the ones you never hear about, and are reported as being something completely other than what really happened.

No, the key would be to do a strike and call it a "joint military operation with Pakistani forces". No need for secrecy, that'll just get too many conspiracy theorists fired up.

Another thing, Gino, what goes on in the border regions (at least the ones America is concerned with) doesn't significantly affect the vast majority of the Pakistani population. If it's on the brink of a civil war, then Bhutto's assassination in December would've given it the push. It didn't. Whatever America does on the border won't have an effect.

Sorry for hijacking the thread. Regarding the debate: McCain's an idiot, but so are most of the people who are still uncommitted, so maybe he appealed to them? I think it was a tie on McCain's home turf; judging by snap polls, it was a win for Obama.

Not me - but I thought McCain got in some good points and a few decent shots, and Obama missed quite a few opportunities to hit back, especially on the Pakistan issue. I had to pause just to point out to my wife that what Obama SHOULD have said was, "Senator, you've said that you'd chase Osama bin Laden to the gates of hell - but apparently not to Pakistan."

But he missed that opportunity to show the Republicans' lack of commitment to bringing the REAL 9/11 criminals to justice.

I just really, REALLY want Obama to get pissed and go off on McCain.

That would've been a great line!

I'm a little pissed at the Iran point, I thought Obama was dominating it and then McCain got a good shot in at the end (when he ridiculed what a "discussion" with Ahmedinijhad might be like) and that seemingly gave him the edge on this issue, even though he was much less substantial on it than Obama was.

Yeah, given the material, it was *supposed* to be McCain's strong point. I would have loved to see Obama land a knockout punch, but the fact that he held his own and gave as good as he got (or almost as good) ranks it as just about a tie - and in a tie on foreign policy, Obama exceeded expectations.

No, what you DO is get some stringers from Blackwater who wanna make a buck and kill some infidel(1) ragheads for glory, and form a shell company.

Then you "loan" Pakistan the money to hire it, and look the other way when the use it to supplement the regular troops using operational information obtained by quiet collboration between the ISI and our own intel folk(2).

This gets them the troops nominally under their control and removes our hand from the process, as well as tactically you'd be pushing them OUT towards Afganistan, where our troops can bust their chops at will, instead of IN, where they become a worse problem cause of proximity to denser population centers.

Too bad they killed most of Phoenix when they bombed the hell out of Falluah with them still in it to cover up their excesses, they mighta been useful in this case.

-Frem
(1) - Blackwater has a religious nutter as it's boss, and a damned lot of their troops are "true believers" in his little agenda, and that should scare anyone with half a lick of sense.

(2) - You know, their actual JOB for once, instead of harrassing their supposed protectees non freakin stop.

Obama went a little to soft and subtle in his ridicule of McCain, and subtlety just doesn't play that well with the American people.

The heart of the problem is...IMO, The dramatic difference between Hezzbolah, Al-Queda, and normal people living in the Muslim countries of the Middle East, and how our press, through lousy research, misguided patriotism, diplomatic rhetoric, or shameless ratings seeking, have blurred the lines between those different people to the point where they think anyone that gets a nuke will instantly take the opportunity to end the world for Islam and 70 virgins. It's just a possibility, not a certainty. And Isreal has over 200 nukes with splendid delivery systems, they can take care of themselves and probably will have to by the time our bungling intel catches on to anything. That works, too. However you do it, I think the point is that you DON'T just send a brigade of U.S. troops storming across the border into Pakistan; you keep it quiet, you keep it low-key. And I think Obama gets that, but it's not something you're really supposed to talk about out loud, especially in a debate. For whatever reason, "black ops" are still looked upon with suspicion by most Americans - and often with good reason!

Yup. And Israel's nukes are thermonuclear weapons - hydrogen bombs, not your garden-variety atomic bombs; they're an order of magnitude more powerful. Iran gets itself a 4-kiloton atomic bomb, and Israel answers that with a 20-megaton hydrogen bomb. Or a couple hundred of them.

As for letting Israel take care of Israel, they've historically done a pretty damned good job of it. If they really feel threatened by an Iranian nuclear program, I don't think they're going to wait for us to invade Iran, and I don't think they're going to ask our permission to take action in their own defense. They don't need us to do anything at all - they've proven time and again (Iraq in '79, Syria just last year) that they're more than capable of dismantling nuclear reactors with a few bunker-buster "sanctions" of their own.

"The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to the doctrinaire and academic thinkers. Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can "throw the rascals out" at any election without leading to any profound or extreme shifts in policy. There does exist, and has existed for a generation, an international Anglophile network which operates, to some extent, in the way the radical Right believes the Communists act. In fact, this network, which we may identify as the Round Table Groups, has no aversion to cooperating with the Communists, or any other groups, and frequently does so. I know of the operations of this network because I have studied it for twenty years and was permitted for two years, in the early 1960's, to examine its papers and secret records. I have no aversion to it or to most of its aims and have, for much of my life, been close to it and to many of its instruments. I have objected, both in the past and recently, to a few of its policies (notably to its belief that England was an Atlantic rather than a European Power and must be allied, or even federated, with the United States and must remain isolated from Europe), but in general my chief difference of opinion is that it wishes to remain unknown, and I believe its role in history is significant enough to be known."

Friendly encounter in US between Republican VP nominee, Israeli president

Ynet Israel News

JERUSALEM ISRAEL - President Shimon Peres met Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin Thursday and the two exchanged some warm words. Peres was on hand to deliver a speech at an international conference organized by former United States President Bill Clinton.

Upon meeting the Israeli president Palin told him she has wanted to meet him and get to know him for years. She added that the only flag in her office, aside from the American flag, is the Israeli flag, stressing that she wants Israelis to know that she's been a longtime friend of the Jewish state, and will remain such.

Peres also took the opportunity to briefly speak to Republican presidential hopeful John McCain, who referred to the Israeli president as a longtime friend.

The families are protected against pedophiles and other undesirables. Even the United States government...

Gunn then turns his attention to the Senator as he reaches to grab the axe from his back and hurls it at the Senator's head. It lands in the middle of her forehead, cutting off her conversation in mid-sentence. She collapses to the floor, still holding the phone to her ear.

GUNN
(to the remaining vampires)
Looks like you boys are gonna need to find a new candidate.
(the vampires encircle Gunn, growling)
And you wonder why folks don't vote.

Gunn straightens his arms, unfurling the stakes he had hidden up his sleeves. He stakes the first one that attacks him, but has to fight off the others with more difficulty.

RUE

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

I heard an interesting opinion: Obama can't afford to look angry b/c then all people will see is an 'angry black man'. He can't look aggressive b/c then people will say he's 'picking on' McCain. That rings true for me. Given those constraints, he did exceptionally well.

PIRATENEWS

John Lee, conspiracy therapist at Hollywood award-winner History Channel-mocked SNL-spoofed PirateNew.org wooHOO!!!!!!

I refused to watch the fake "debate". Why the Hell would anyone vote for the lesser evil that's still EVIL?

Why would anyone vote for Obama or McCain, when both campaigns are run by Polish Jew Zbignew Brezenski, to destroy USA?

Did the "debates" mention the fact that the Federal Reserve Bank is a PRIVATE CORPORATION for foreign owners, that keeps 100% of income taxes, and was not legally created in 1913?

Did the "debates" mention that 100,000 US soldiers were genocided in this 18-year war, AND THAT GEORGE BUSH SR TOLD SADDAM TO INVADE KUWAIT?

Did the "debates" mention that 2.6-million Iraqis were genocided in this 18-year war (our frakkin ALLIES)?

Did the "debates" mention PENTAGON'S OPERATION NORTHWOODS treason to attack USA in fake terrorism to "justify" a war? Cheney ordering US Navy SEALS to attack US Navy to blame Iran? Israel's attack on USS Liberty for LBJ? 9/11 was an inside job, as confessed in PsyOp Northwoods?

If you want black, vote for Cynthia McKinney.

If you want a woman VP, vote for Cynthia McKinney.

If you want an Arab Semite, vote for Ralph Nader.

If you want to kill the IRS, kill the income tax, and kill the private Federal Reserve Bank Corp, vote for Chuck Baldwin.

If you want a fake Libertarian, vote for Bob Barr.

But don't vote to destroy USA with McBama.

News headlines should read:

"The Pain of Spain Falls Mostly on McCain!"

This world is a comedy for those who think, and a tragedy for those who feel.

SIGNYM

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Many good points here, so I'll have to go back and read.

I thought Obama did worse than I expected, and McCain did better. But that prolly says more about my expectations than the candidates. First of all, you have to realize that I have not, until now, listened to EITHER candidate. I know their positions and their reputations, but what I know of them is thru the internet. Obama's reputation is as a skillful orator, McCain's is as sometimes loose cannon with a droopy eye. The other things is that I listened to half of it (on the way home) and missed some of the interplay.

The parts that I agreed with Obama I felt he did not make as strong a case as he could have. Specifically, the economy. He seemed to be emphasizing the pain of the average person in this current meltdown. That posits his "solution" as fuzzy liberalism. However, there is a very strong ECONOMIC reason to help "Main Street"... a reason that Obama only touched on. There is also a strong ECONOMIC reason for universal health insurance (to make out industry more competitive), and point that Obama didn't really bring up much. OTOH McCain's answer to the current crisis was nonexistant. (A point Obama could have made, but didn't.)

Neither candidate did a good job talking about what they would give up to pay for the bailout, altho Obama did mention potentially bigger savings (Medicare, Medicare Rx) than McCain ("earmarks").

I was disappointed in some of Obama's foreign policy answers, altho I have to realize that he has to pander to the insecurity that Americans feel about the rest of the world. I was VERY glad when he stuck by his guns and said he'd talk with Iran w/ preconditions. Also glad that he tagged McCain with "Bomb, bomb, bomb.. Bomb, bomb Iran". McCain's answers, were a trip down memory lane and somewhat irrelevant, but he sounded forceful and sure of himself and that might be what some ppl are looking for.

Obama's voice is higher, he speaks more quickly, and he stuttered a little, making him sound defensive. I didn't "get" the masterful orator. There was only one part where I thought he almost caught fire, near the end when he was talking about our problems being much bigger than Iraq. I suspect that he does better with longer speeches, and not as well in a town hall-type forum.

The only ppl I really get enthused about are ppl like Nader and Kucinich and (sometimes) Ron Paul. So apparently my reactions are very much at odds with the general public, and I'm not much of an indicator of anything.

DEADLOCKVICTIM

just now had a chance to check in here... i was a little surprised that most networks said Obama had an overall edge in the debate - to me it was the grizzled old war dog vs. the polite young man...

now, i think it's time we shed the "you're either with us or you're against us" attitude and the dumbing down of the country and act like a civilized people for a change... i just don't see that coming from Mac/Palin -

there were some minor things about Barack that he needs work on, but, i certainly feel that he proved his worthiness to become president - McCain just seemed mad... and showed no respect for his opponent -a characteristic trait of the Republican party as a whole and McCain in particular.... (poor guy probably needs to get laid..)

btw - Ralph Nader was on with Bill Maher last night and seemed to be trying to incite a tax revolt.. the ole guy still has it...
good on ya Ralph..

lastly, here is a funny and funky Debate Highlight in Song and Dance video...

He must have had some kind of emotional appeal for you.

I saw a tired old man with tired rhetorical tricks dodging questions and in the end resorting to 'when I got out of prison ...' and other tired old-man stories and ploys. I actually felt sorry for him at times, even as I despised his lies, ignorance and silly rhetoric.

Oh no...I am not fond of McCain in the slightest. I think my poorly phrased point was that, while I agree with you about his playing of the "POW camp card", detachment, tired five word slogans, doddering, and outright lies...it takes more than the truth for Conservatives to turn away from him. What I was hoping for is that McCain would do something so horrific that Conservatives would hate him more than they hate the idea of a Obama as President.
