Insanely rich peeps get that way by hoarding wealth, or by fictionalizing wealth- those are the only two ways.

A company can a) produce goods in other countries by virtual slaves and garner vast profits, or charge ridiculous high prices for cheaply domestically manufactured products that get subsidized and/or mandated by government stoolies (see: pharmasutical industry), OR, they can b) get company stocks to increase in value through lying with statistics, giving rise to the notion that a company is worth far more than it is, and generating sky high bonuses for the individuals that engineer this belief.

Basically, they grab money, or they earn money based on the ridiculous belief on the part of the masses that there's enough of it around to have a booming economy, making the rich richer & still be enough left over to have the average citizen living like a king as well (see: credit).

Bubbles are due to burst by their very nature (ever blow a bubble that didn't eventually pop as a kid?).

As long as this world is okay with paying some stupid as*hole stupid money for going 'Uh- huh' or 'I don't know' once in a while while others do the real work, the feudal system, albeit modified, still remains among us.

Thus endith my economics lesson for the day.

Tell that to Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs, and Mark Cuban for starters. They all became billionnaires from companies that were losing money. And lots of multi-millionnaires were made from IPO's of companies that never even had revenue. In the 90's it seemed like great Capitalism, today it seems like great fraud.

The IPO scams disappeared, but the players moved into the mortgage scams. This time they had friends on the Senate & House Banking and Finance Committees.

De-regulation - versus - Over-regulation...that's the key here. Many from both sides of the aisle warned repeatedly of problems with Freddie & Fannie. Those that voiced concerns were threatened with racial discrimination lawsuits, etc. The general public was constantly told that Freddie & Fannie were strong, but all the insiders knew it was a house of cards. Banks were forced by law to make bad loans, it's that simple. Affirmative Action for Housing was a PART of this mess. Lots of blame to go all around, particularly from the SEC.

Here's more on this aspect of the crisis:(quote from recent article):
"The Los Angeles Times reported that, starting in 1992, a majority-Democratic Congress "mandated that Fannie and Freddie increase their purchases of mortgages for low-income and medium-income borrowers. Operating under that requirement, Fannie Mae, in particular, has been aggressive and creative in stimulating minority gains."
Under Clinton, the entire federal government put massive pressure on banks to grant more mortgages to the poor and minorities. Clinton's secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Andrew Cuomo, investigated Fannie Mae for racial discrimination and proposed that 50 percent of Fannie Mae's and Freddie Mac's portfolio be made up of loans to low- to moderate-income borrowers by the year 2001.
Threatening lawsuits, Clinton's Federal Reserve demanded that banks treat welfare payments and unemployment benefits as valid income sources to qualify for a mortgage. That isn't a joke -- it's a fact.
When Democrats controlled both the executive and legislative branches, political correctness was given a veto over sound business practices.
In 1999, liberals were bragging about extending affirmative action to the financial sector. Los Angeles Times reporter Ron Brownstein hailed the Clinton administration's affirmative action lending policies as one of the "hidden success stories" of the Clinton administration, saying that "black and Latino homeownership has surged to the highest level ever recorded."
Meanwhile, economists were screaming from the rooftops that the Democrats were forcing mortgage lenders to issue loans that would fail the moment the housing market slowed and deadbeat borrowers couldn't get out of their loans by selling their houses.
A decade later, the housing bubble burst and, as predicted, food-stamp-backed mortgages collapsed. Democrats set an affirmative action time-bomb and now it's gone off.
In Bush's first year in office, the White House chief economist, N. Gregory Mankiw, warned that the government's "implicit subsidy" of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, combined with loans to unqualified borrowers, was creating a huge risk for the entire financial system.
Rep. Barney Frank denounced Mankiw, saying he had no "concern about housing." How dare you oppose suicidal loans to people who can't repay them! The New York Times reported that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were "under heavy assault by the Republicans," but these entities still had "important political allies" in the Democrats.
Now, at a cost of hundreds of billions of dollars, middle-class taxpayers are going to be forced to bail out the Democrats' two most important constituent groups: rich Wall Street bankers and welfare recipients.
Political correctness had already ruined education, sports, science and entertainment. But it took a Democratic president with a Democratic congress for political correctness to wreck the financial industry."

NOT TRUE.

STATE regulators, consumer agencies and attorneys general noticed an increase of PREDATORY lending but were FORCED by the administration through the OCC to NOT enforce their consumer protection statutes or their banking laws. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/13/AR2008

FURTHERMORE - as an example - Countrywide steered roughly 50% of people who qualified for regular loans into subprime loans. After making an excess of money (fees and points) on these bad loans, they THEN sold bundles of these illegal mortgages as investment packages.

NO ONE FORCED ANYONE TO MAKE BAD LOANS ! They were driven by GREED and a FORCED LACK of regulatory oversight. Pure and simple.

Jong, if you want the economic ponzi bullshit that started em down that road....

Follow the financial practices of America Online, and then ask Time-Warner how they felt about being sucker punched when the mask came off.

And then go ask how many of the execs responsible now live overseas.

I'd dearly love to see Steve Case swing from a rope for setting an example that lead to so much misery - AND for deliberately fostering and feeding an underground market that was even worse.
(Trust me, you'll know, it'll practically steamroller you from the side when you start digging into their finances.)

Actually, that is VERY TRUE. Groups like ACORN would protest banks and force them into making bad loans for undeserving applicants.

ACORN recognized very early the opportunity presented by the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) of 1977. As Stanley Kurtz has reported, ACORN proudly touted "affirmative action" lending and pressured banks to make subprime loans. Madeline Talbott, a Chicago ACORN leader, boasted of "dragging banks kicking and screaming" into dubious loans. And, as Sol Stern reported in City Journal, ACORN also found a remunerative niche as an "advisor" to banks seeking regulatory approval. "Thus we have J.P. Morgan & Co., the legatee of the man who once symbolized for many all that was supposedly evil about American capitalism, suddenly donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to ACORN." Is this a great country or what? As conservative community activist Robert Woodson put it, "The same corporations that pay ransom to Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton pay ransom to ACORN."

One source, but as is stated in the text, as reported by Stanley Kurtz, which you can google to your heart's content and find it easily enough.

Roaring economies eventually come to an end, after how how many straight quarters of postive growth ? Some would say we NEED a slow down.

WMDs were moved to Syria, in the MONTHS leading up to the war, and or some were buried , in the vast Iraqi desert. Doesn't matter, the U.N. approved of military action, we took it, took out Saddam and his sons, and the surge is working.

Job well done !

Rue, you're going to have to face reality soon enough. Quit listening to the kook- fringe assholes who are against all that is good and moral.

And for the WMDs - Uhmm, if Rumsfeld KNEW where they were, then he KNEW they were in Syria - right ? SOOOooo - was he just pulling your leg when he said they were near Tikrit and around Baghdad ? I mean, after all, if you don't trust Rumsfeld, who DO you trust ?

Thought you'd get the Star Trek/ Cardassian Mind control reference. -

Guess not.

Examples? Already given. Read again.

Back when I made the 'roaring economy ' remark, the economy was indeed doing very well, despite the lies and distortions the Left and the Mainstream media was giving. We went all over this, GDP, low unemployment numbers, low interest rate, no inflation, positive big ticket items. industry orders...ALL pointed to a strong, healthy economy. This was how many years ago ? 2 , 3 ? My POINT was that, despite what we were being told, the FACTS pointed to things not being bad at all.

WMD ? We gave Saddam MONTHS to do what ever he wanted to do w/ the WMD he had, and he seems to have skirted it across the border into Syria. We can't claim that, because it involves charges against another country, and w/ the admitted failures of intel already out there, no one is willing to stick their neck and put their job on the line now. One thing's for certain, EVERYONE assumed Iraq had WMD , in much greater numbers than we found. Saddam himself admitted to having more, but when none were found, folks simply expect us to shrug our shoulders and say " oh well, that's the end of that! ". No ruttin' way. The risk is far too high for us to close our eyes and look away.

Facts lead to truth, lest they're tweaked some.
For instance, current economic instability began in Carter years, got the pins set by Clinton's policies, and Bush rolled the strike with his 'no rules' cowboy mentality. Left wants to say it was all Bush, right wants to say it was all Clinton, tweaked facts will support either view, un-tweaked facts shows no one's clean on this.

Empty talking points, not facts, are all you bring to the table.

Bush rolled the strike with his 'no rules' cowboy mentality.

Sadly for you, the facts don't back that claim up. Bush wanted to reign in Fannie and Freddie. Tried 34 times, he did, but only to have the Dems deny him. From the NYTimes, of all papers...

September 11, 2003– The Bush Administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago.

Under the plan, disclosed at a Congressional hearing today, a new agency would be created within the Treasury Department to assume supervision of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored companies that are the two largest players in the mortgage lending industry,

The new agency would have the authority, which now rests with Congress, to set one of the two capital-reserve requirements for the companies. It would exercise authority over any new lines of business. And it would determine whether the two are adequately managing the risks of their ballooning portfolios.

The plan is an acknowledgment by the administration that oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — which together have issued more than $1.5 trillion in outstanding debt — is broken. A report by outside investigators in July concluded that Freddie Mac manipulated its accounting to mislead investors, and critics have said Fannie Mae does not adequately hedge against rising interest rates.

Among the groups denouncing the proposal today were the National Association of Home Builders and Congressional Democrats who fear that tighter regulation of the companies could sharply reduce their commitment to financing low-income and affordable housing.

Bullshit! Now you're spinning, to try to save face. You're attempting to do what most Libs do, and that's change the topic of discussion when you can't back up your position. The 'cowoby' reference was solely on the matter of ECONOMICS, and didn't have a gorram thing to do w/ the war in Iraq. Stick to one topic at a time, if you can.

Sorry, but that's not how Bush sees it. It's how the LEFT sees it. Remember Paul Begala's famous quote, on Clinton making up laws via Executive Order ? " Stroke of the pen, law of the land.....kinda cool " . That's the view the LEFT has, that the President is KING, which is all fine and dandy when YOUR guy is in the Whtie House, but not for Bush ? Fuck you! You accuse Bush of doing E-X-A-C-T-L-Y what Clinton DID, while giving Clinton a pass ?

So your claim is that it's all Clinton's fault, that it started in '99, under Clinton and the Republican-led Congress, and that in the ensuing years when the Republicans had control of the House, the Senate, AND the White House, they did absolutely nothing to correct the problems. Yet somehow, they DID try, but "the Dems" denied them, even though they were badly outnumbered by the Bush Rubber Stamp Company's crew in Congress.

Is that about the size of it?

Yep. Only the Dems were never " badly outnumbered" as, you put it. The GOP didn't have the majority size they needed in order to accomplish what was needed.

And let me guess... that they couldn't get their majority to vote to fix the problem is still Clinton's fault somehow. Even during the 6 years between Bush becoming President and the Democrats regaining a majority in the House (but NOT a majority in the Senate).

So there were six years of solid Republican control of the Executive and Legislative branches of government, and they couldn't get ANYTHING done to fix the problems which you say they all so clearly saw?

That doesn't speak very well of Republicans...

Facts lead to truth, lest they're tweaked some.
For instance, current economic instability began in Carter years, got the pins set by Clinton's policies, and Bush rolled the strike with his 'no rules' cowboy mentality

YOU started this off by talking of the ECONOMIC situation. Then, when I clearly gave evidence to support my point, which showed Bush attempted to stay this crisis, years ago, YOU did the pussy move of duck and dive by trying shift the topic to Bush going into Iraq, which didn't have a god damn thing to do w/ the topic of discussion. Iraq doesn't have 1 damn thing to do w/ the mortgage crisis or the stock market tanking, and you KNOW it. Your ' cowboy mentality ' of Bush was NOT about Iraq. Why can't you be a man, FOR ONCE, and admit you got your ass handed to you? OH, you're too much of a punk to admit it, is what I'm guessin'.

You DO know that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac don't actually write loans to consumers - right ?
That the problems are due to the orginal banks and lending organizations - right ?
That the problems are FAR bigger than either corporation, and that 'reforming' either one or both would not have solved the problems - right ?
That 'reforming' them would have been rearranging the chairs on the deck of the Titanic - right ?
And that blaming those corporations for bad loans is like blaming the yellow leaves on the trees for the approach of winter - right ?

You DO know all this - right ?

BEAR STEARNS BAILOUT
http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/03/16/business/paulson.php
Bear Stearns had made a fortune in mortgage-backed securities but faced a possible collapse after those investments soured.

ARMS AND SUBPRIME LOANS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_housing_bubble
The crisis began with the bursting of the United States housing bubble[1][2] and high default rates on "subprime" and adjustable rate mortgages (ARM), beginning in approximately 2005–2006. For a number of years prior to that, declining lending standards, an increase in loan incentives such as easy initial terms, and a long-term trend of rising housing prices had encouraged borrowers to assume difficult mortgages in the belief they would be able to quickly refinance at more favorable terms. However, once interest rates began to rise and housing prices started to drop moderately in 2006–2007 in many parts of the U.S., refinancing became more difficult. Defaults and foreclosure activity increased dramatically as easy initial terms expired, home prices failed to go up as anticipated, and ARM interest rates reset higher. Foreclosures accelerated in the United States in late 2006 and triggered a global financial crisis through 2007 and 2008. During 2007, nearly 1.3 million U.S. housing properties were subject to foreclosure activity, up 79% from 2006.[3]

It's funny, to see you , once again, side step the entire issue, to offer nothing but childish insults and obfuscate your way out of dealing w/ the facts.

FACT - The current home mortgage crisis in no way, what so ever, was influenced by the Iraq war. I know you'd like to think so , but the fact is, it doesn't. Not one bit.

Buh...buh....buh....all those BILLIONS W wasted on Iraq MUST have had SOME effect, right ?

Nope. None. What we're dealing here with is a crisis that's many times the ENRON collapse, and yet not ONE of those who brought us the problem are being QUESTIONED! No, those at fault, primarily the Democrats like Barney Frank, are actually being looked to to SOLVE this issue, if you can imagine that.

Sorry, there I go again, dealing in the real world, where you're stuck in the ethereal realm . You'd rather dream up baseless scenarios of childhoods for folks you've never even met. You'd rather project your fears and shortcomings onto others as a way to retaliate on a message board when you really have no clue of how to reply and still make yourself look competent.

I know, what was I thinking ?

That's not quantifiable, and therefore out of the realm of factual or not. It is MY OPINION that the cavalier attitude demonstrated by the current administration did nothing but embolden the weasles on Wall Street, and that they merely more furiously toiled at it, following the example set by your glorious leader. Okay, yeah, I didn't know Bush's boys had an eye on what was going down, or that they even voiced a protest, but it can't have been too loud a voice seeing as I never even heard of it before.
