Mother, Son Killed While Trick-Or-Treating

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- A mother and her 9-year-old son were struck and killed while trick-or-treating on Halloween, Westfield police said.

Both were wearing dark clothing and walking on a street with dark sidewalks when they were struck by a Toyota, Westfield Sergeant Brian Boldini said.

Roberta A. Salois, 47, was taken to Noble hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her 9-year-old son, Steven X. Smith-Salois, was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he died.

The driver of the Toyota, Anne R. Schlichtig, 26, of Westfield, was questioned by police.

She was driving on South Maple Street just after 8 p.m., when her car struck the mother and child.

Police said they will determine if charges will be filed.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Hell, you left out the story about the 12-year-old trick-or-treater who was shot by a homeowner who thought the kid was breaking into his house. The resident, a convicted felon, was so convinced the kid was breaking in that he loosed 30 rounds into the kid.

Quote:

SUMTER, S.C. — Police in South Carolina say a 12-year-old trick-or-treater was killed when a convicted felon fearing a robbery fired nearly 30 rounds with an assault rifle from inside a house.

Sumter Police Chief Patty Patterson says T.J. Darrisaw died Friday evening after being shot multiple times. His father and 9-year-old brother were also shot, but were treated and released.

Quentin Patrick has been charged with murder and assault and battery with intent to kill. Police say the 22-year-old ex-convict told them he'd been robbed and shot in the past.

Police say T.J.'s family attended a Halloween celebration in downtown Sumter, 45 miles east of Columbia, then stopped at Patrick's house because the porch light was on.

The father and his four children approached a home with a porch light on about 8:30 p.m. EDT while their mother waited nearby in a vehicle.

As the family was at the door, they thought they heard fireworks. The 12-year-old boy, his father and brother were all hit by the gunfire. The boy died at a hospital, Coroner Verna Moore said. The other two children were not hurt.

T.J.'s father and brother were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Which is $2,000 more than my 160 mph Triumph cost new.

If memory serves, the Supra Turbo was electronically limited to 155 or 160mph. The Chief Engineer on the car stated at the time that ungoverned models "easily" reached verified speeds over 180mph.

Fewer than 9000 of the 4th-generation Supra Twin Turbo were sold in the U.S., because they started around $40,000 at the time. But if you were one of those lucky few, unmolested examples still sell for around $25,000-$30,000 today. That's a pretty damned good rate of depreciation.

We paid 35000 brand new. It is the 89 model - very rare and I have had it to 120 and then chickened out

Ah, the third-generation model, the "JG" series, right? Still a beautiful body; I liked them better than the 4th-gen. I remember Car&Driver magazine summing it up thusly: "Think of the Supra Turbo as a Porshce 928S with a $20,000 rebate." That's pretty damned high praise.

My own personal "chickenshit threshold" seems to be 137mph. I've done it three times - first in 1981 on a 1980 Yamaha 850 Special, wearing shorts, no shirt, and no helmet (young and invincible, that was me!), second in a '95 Nissan Maxima (they said it would do 140, but I couldn't get it beyond an indicated 137), last in a Subaru WRX STi. That time, I had no idea how fast I was going - I punched the throttle on a stretch of freeway and felt like I was doing about 90, maybe 95. I noticed I was coming up really fast behind a knot of cars, and wondered why the hell they were going so slow, until I looked at the speedo and saw it reading 137mph!

I really liked that Scoobie, but that one drive taught me that I simply couldn't afford that car. The payments weren't the problem; the tickets were! :)

The CRX I currently drive has a "theoretical" max velocity of 148mph (I built a custom-geared transmission for it, utilizing a very tall overdrive 5th gear set), but it simply doesn't have the power to overcome the wind resistance at that speed. I've pushed it a little beyond the speedometer's max indication of 120mph, and it was actually pulling more strongly at 115mph than it was at 90, but I started thinking too hard about the ticket I might get if I kept pushing, so I backed out of it. I generally "cruise" the little monster at 95-100mph on the highway, and it feels rock-solid at those speeds.

Damn, that's close.. like.. 1mph close.

Theoretically, the speed of a 1999 Olds Alero is electronically limited to 112mph - but theoretically, all the black boxes work, too.

Nailed it to 136mph before I backed down on a deserted secondary highway at something like 3am.

And she will chew your ass in a quarter mile too, of course, slowing down with those disastrously designed brakes is another matter.

Heater don't work, radio don't work, power seats never DID work, AC don't work, trunk lid latch is busted and held down inside by pallet straps, and the dash is lit up like a xmas tree most of the time over stuff like low tire pressue due to temperature changes and howling for an oil change and wiper fluid refill....

But revving at me is a bad idea, especially if you're driving some riced out piece of shit with a wide tip on a stock muffler and hacksawed springs with phony badging, cause this west virginia shine runner hatfield descended bastard will EAT YOU ALIVE.

Sure, it's a piece o shit, but it's MY piece o shit, and that evil sixpack under the hood runs clean and smooth as the day she rolled off the line.

Heheh... Point taken. I prefer a "sleeper" myself. Nothing looks out of the ordinary or less-than-stock on the CRX, *UNLESS* you happen to tear down the motor and transmission - and you'd need a really good eye to spot anything odd there, too. It's the little stuff - higher lift and duration on the camshaft, adjustable cam gear, port-matched intake and exhaust, a 4-2-1 Honda-made exhaust header that I took the time to tack-weld the stock heatshield on, close-ratio gearing, lightened flywheel, domed pistons instead of the stock dished ones, and other subtle but effective mods, NONE of which are visible to the naked eye.

And it passes state-mandated emissions inspections with flying colors, although I wasn't at all sure that it would (I built it before we had such things, and worried myself sick before I took it in for the first time).

No "fart-can" exhaust, no graphics, no spoilers or wings, no stickers, no flashy paint, no badging at all, nothing that would make it look the least bit out of the ordinary (except for the 15" wheels that I pulled off an Acura Integra GS-R).

Still, I make it a point NEVER to rev on Detroit Iron, unless we're on an autocross course. :)

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

The ironic thing is that when my car was stolen, all the little bastards took from it was an $80 CD player, the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and the seats. They busted up the interior quite a bit, but I can replace all that. I already had a spare set of CRX Si seats in storage, that were in far better condition than the ones that were stolen, and I can replace the dash, console, and other interior bits. They left the original floormats (which sell on eBay for $400 a set), they left the optional center armrest (which sells for $500 on eBay), and they left every part of the drivetrain untouched. Anything that was actually rare or desirable, they left. Idiots.

And if they're not driving a CRX, the seats are useless to them, because CRX seats ONLY fit a CRX.

The ECU was a completely stock unit that can be had for $50 at a junkyard. It was in the car because I had my "normal" ECU out for some tinkering with the chips. We're playing around with a launch control feature, which will allow me to keep the throttle floored while it holds revs at 3000rpm for a hard launch. No feathering the throttle; just floor it and sidestep the clutch, and you're away.

The car was recovered a couple weeks after it was stolen, and it will once again be my project car. Only this time it has several layers of physical and electronic protection to keep it from wandering off... And I'll likely do some further tweaks to the brakes and suspension, plus I have a few new ideas for more transmission tricks, including equal-length axles to alleviate torque-steer problems. While I work on all the mechanical goodies, the chassis will be going in to have every last ding and dent taken care of, and will get a fresh coat of Torino Red Pearl paint. As always, it will look and sound like a bone-stock CRX.

Raises hand sheepishly ...

I have a 1995 POS Toyota that doesn't go fast at all - gets great gas milage however (33.5 mpg in real life). Be that as it may, it is and was necessary transportation.

So after my first stolen car here is So Cal I turned an ordinary dashboard switch into a kill-switch. You would have to tow my car away to steal it.

I always snicker at the thought of anyone trying to start it, even with a punched-out ignition.

No one is gonna steal an Alero, it's got a horrible rep, a laundry list of active recalls, the manufacturer is defunct and if you don't know the crossovers you'll never get parts, and it's bluebook value is practically a black hole of suck.

And it's an OBVIOUS piece of shit with a run down, worn out look inside and out, just another tired, weary soldier of the daily commute war.

But yeah, it packs a lovingly maintained and downright evil GM LA1 3400 3.4L and she can bash out a 1/4 mile in the high 14's despite being an automatic.

I kinda like the beastly heavy stock flywheel cause she maintains a nice 72mph cruising speed at <1800 RPM easily, and not bad MPG on that neither - and of course, I couldn't afford to screw around with it if I wanted to.

Everything else on the car is crap, but the motors a right nice piece of work, and on a FRESH set of brakes and rotors (look up Alero brakes, you'll hear no end of bitching, design flaws and recalls galore...) I might, just MIGHT hold my own even in an autocross.

In the left side of the glovebox are two items you really don't ever wanna see me reach for, one is an old cassette tape of some of the rawest banjo pickin, fiddle sawin bustouts ever heard west of the ohio river, and the other is a plug of days'o work apple flavor - I ONLY chew when I'm about to do something ballsout lunatic.

So if I slot that tape, and bite a chunk offa that plug, check your seatbelt, grab the bottom of your seat with both hands and start praying to your divinity of choice, cause you're in for the ride of your life.

FYI, my mother was a demo derby champion, if that tells you anything.

LoL, from the Wiki...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldsmobile_Alero

Often misdiagnosed as a failing fuel pump, a problem with the Alero is the security system's seizure and cut-off of fuel delivery to the engine, resulting in the vehicle not starting or stalling while driving. It is not known exactly what triggers this to happen, but it can be diagnosed by turning the key to the "ON" position and checking for the "SECURITY" light on the dashboard. To reset the security system, leave the key in the ignition in the "ON" position for ten minutes. This problem will continue to occur, however, and a replaced ignition switch should relieve the problem.

More common problems reside in the suspension and brake systems. The front strut mounts are prone to wear, and creaking emanating from the front end may be one symptom. The front brake calipers, pads, and rotors contribute to premature rotor wear. It is not uncommon to resurface or replace warped front rotors after just 20,000 miles of use. Further, the front wheel bearing is another common trouble spot. Both the bearing and its internal wheel speed sensor are prone to failure. The bearing has failed so often that GM has issued a revised axle nut and torque specification to ease the axial load on the bearing assembly. The speed sensor's failure is characterized by a "triple warning", wherein the ABS, TRAC OFF, and SERVICE ENGINE SOON lights illuminate either constantly or intermittently.

They're being generous, I've replaced warped rotors in as little as 2500 miles - this thing EATS the friggin things cause the engine heat is directed right onto them which burns up the pads, wears out the struts, causes the whole front end to shake, screws up your alignment and also wears out your tires - once had triple trouble when a strut BROKE due to that at the same time the sidewalls blew out through one side of the tire, THEN all the lights come on and the brakes hardly worked.

I've gotten to know the little signs that the brakes are about to go, but a lot of Alero owners learned them a bit too late, expecting them to actually last 10K miles or more, and paid a price for it.

Ain't nobody gonna steal that car, nobody WANTS that car, hell, not even me, but I am too broke to replace it.
