Funny, from the title of the thread I thought someone was begging you to stop posting new topics every few hours.

HKCavalier

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

HK,

Me too. Actually, I thought it was going to be specifically against Whozit posting a new topic every couple of hours, or at least against the bagel thing.

America loves a winner!

Much like the push by some to limit terms a person can serve in Congress, maybe there out to be a limit on how many threads one can start ?

Just an idea.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I know I'll be accused of feeding the troll, but I once again have to ask Zit if he ever bothers to read the articles he links here. There is no mention anywhere of Obama being identified as a son of a slave.

Stop it, Zit! You're the one making everyone else sick.

AURAPTOR,

First, by proxy, since I won't respond to whozit until he drops the bagel: Persosnally, I love old threads with 150 replies. I was actually very frustrated that my reply to River6213's thread "How Do You handle Death", so I have linked in my thread "I aim to misbehave." But back to the main point.

Since I'm designing my own forum, I really truly appreciate suggestions like this. I have nothing against Haken and his page here, It's been great, and will continue, but there should be a place for more controlled discussions. Endless new threads are the ADHD which disrupts constructive thought, much more of a hazard than very long conversations. I don't know if River's 2 1/2 year thread is the longest running on, but clearly too long for the system. Some have been alive for a very long time. At the moment, "I want to be a part of the hate" which was created as a place for people to vent their personal bigotry without fear of retribution, has been threadjacked by everyone, including myself, and mostly now is about the definition of evil and its validity, and some of that is civil, and some of it is a raging crossfire, though not yet a full out flame war.

But more specifically, yes, it should, but probably that limit should be weighted. Seniority should play a minor role, to prevent out and out trolling, but more, I think, the number of responses that you get per thread should weigh in. A lot of people here post a fairly high number of threads, which each get a lot of response. I post maybe three a week usually. I'm about to start one because Frem asked me to, and because I want to test the serenity rules. And, also, because I want to discuss the topic.

But Whozit has posted probably 3/4th of the threads, and his total number of reponses to all of his threads combined is probably fewer than that of most users.

BTW, I also have to say, I envy your ability to use language effectively. In my communication obsession, the ability to put something down as a one liner is an art I need to master.

I've been posting storys of funny and/or current events to discuss, but like most threads this one has spun out of control. It started as me complaining how the press is drulling all over Barry's train stunt, now it's over the amount of threads I post, many YOU and Rap reply to. If it was'nt for new threads you and Rap would'nt be able to come up with NEW one liners.

Much as I enjoy using Zit there as a chewtoy, I find him far more tolerable than any form of "moderated" discussions, cause that always, ALWAYS leads in the end... to NO discussion, or none worth a damn - cause if you go against the flow, the banhammer comes out, and thus 95% of "discussion" on those types of boards is one faction trying to bait the other or schmooze a mod into a banning, so they can claim victory without having to actually support their argument simply by silencing the opposition.

And the idea of seniority having any real clout is a total invitation to a form of closed-circle cliqueism that kills boards dead, dead, dead.

What I call Zombies, actually - boards where anyone who hasn't been there X amount of time with Y amount of posts or more is automatically dismissed and thus generally leaves in short order so you wind up with maybe 6-8 people endlessly discussing the same crap they prettymuch all agree on since everyone else has been flamed out of town or bansticked, no thank you.

So gimme the crazies, the shills, the maniacs, I'll take em all, long as we keep discussions open enough for all to participate, however, in the meantime - if one gets too frustrated with it, they can amuse themselves via this website.

I'm sure you'll get a good snicker or two out of it at the very least.

"moderated" discussions

Oh, god no. I would never suggest such a thing. Moderators are like govt.

Rules inherent in the system reward constructive discussion and content, and discourage trollism and spamming.

No discussion needs the following threads:
1. Here's a story I haven't read.
2. Gimme traffic!
3. This wedge issue will invoke a pointless heated debate with conflict but no resolution or insight.

Actually, that third has a use, it swallows up some otherwise non-contributing members into their very own personalized thunderdome.

We've all been on IRC, because, let's face it, we're old. So I don't think anyone is going to suggest that discussion needs a moderator.

Quote:

Not necessarily. Absolute seniority (like nazi forums actually do use) would, and hand Finn a hammer. But new accounts that troll, there's really no reason to encourage that. It was a minor point, because it's not an issue here. But it's a potential issue.

Strunk and White attacked

It's not the crazies that are causing the problem, but face it, this board has discussed for many years now and collectively gets less done than any group that does not have a twelve sided die, a tv and list of pizza delivery numbers.

Getting an interesting discussion started here is intensely difficult, and the fire burns quick because pretty soon two members start at each other's throats over something dumb.

So, you don't like the idea. Suggestions?

Much fun.

I like it the way it is, even with the flaws - someone once likened it to dinner at the table onboard serenity, complete with Jayne being packed off to his room for his naughty mouth, and it often does resemble that, yeah.

Didn't Jayne take a bagel with him to his bunk?

It's not like the serenity dinner table though. There are endless quarrels and insults, and no one ever gets sent off.

The secret is Jayne will be in his bunk because he has a closed circuit camera system.
