John Hirst, head of the Met Office, defends the record of the weathermen after they predicted a mild winter. Andrew Neil asked him to justify his "performance bonus" and salary which is higher than the prime minister's.

I would remind that "global warming doesn't just make everything warmer". I know there are enough here who don't believe in global warming that this will bring the house down on me, but I'll say it anyway. It CHANGES WEATHER; it's changed ours, much across our country, and virtually everywhere else around the globe.

Keeping order in every verse

Well, this is our worst winter since records began. We have got temperatures of minus 22 in southern urban areas, which is unheard of.For the first time in living memory,I couldn't get to work because of the weather. And there is nothing Wonderful about all the white.I suppose those folk who live in Scandinavia and Canada and such places will be wondering what we are fussing about, but the fact is,we just ain't used to it.We don't really have any effective contingencies to combat this weather, which is why it's causing us a big problem here.

For example: all the ice melting in Greenland leads to an influx of fresh water in the North Atlantic, disrupting the Atlantic current. Which is the major conveyor of heat to Europe and the UK. Hence global warming = cold UK.

OK, I don't think that's happening, nor am I convinced that it's even likely. That current is pretty damned big and would be hard to disrupt. But that's my ex's favorite end-of-the-world disaster scenario. Well, end of Europe as we know it scenario. Who knows? Maybe it could happen.

But funding research to find out would be wrong. Because, well, it's just WRONG. We need that money for starting wars.

Exactly. Calling it "global warming" isn't accurate, really. It's GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE. And as it goes on and accelerates, you can expect ever-wilder fluctuations in the weather. Most global climate change scenarios I've seen pretty clearly predict this kind of thing, inasmuch as you CAN predict unpredictable weather.

I might also point out that you'd kind of expect the UK to be colder than the Antarctic right about now, being that it's winter in the UK and summer in Antarctica... Next you'll be pointing out that it's warmer in Texas in July than it is in Antarctica! Would you consider that proof of "global warming"? ;)
