Well first, thanks for asking. I'd have to say that there is validity to that point of view. But I don't think that's always necessarily a bad thing, and I would also say that Democrats/Liberals have their own 2-way entities of support, including some corporations, lawyers, teachers, Hollywood, unions, cultural and arts organizations, climate change advocacy groups, etc. Obama Admin just recently awarded a large no-bid contract to a company that supported Obama in the campaign for them to develop an anthrax antidote. Repubs are probably more guilty of that sort of thing, but it has occured on both sides. It's easy to label Republicans as the party of "corporate interests", but I believe corporations have donated more money to Dem candidates than Repubs in recent times. I may be wrong on that assertion, but it wouldn't be by that much if I am wrong. I really don't know if labels mean anything any more. In many ways, the overwhelming majority of us have turned into Independents. Only the most extreme left or right of center folks support their party's positions and actions 100%. For me personally, it usually comes down to deciding to defend the "indefensible" or not...usually not.

I agree with J--not about corporate donations, bur about the parties. tho i fully agree both sides get more than their share! The parties I see are more like democrat hard, moderate (which seems to incorpotate R + D, and nut-wing righr. I went Independent some time ago.

As ro the sock puppet thing, as usual I'm shocked, again, by what's possible here. Disgusting.

But would you agree that the right has moved away from the original core conservative values

in say environmental issues, or away from fiscal conservative values, or in terms of smaller government...

I may be mistaken, and will look for cites if you want... but didn't the size of government grow substantially under Reagan, and both Bushs ?

I don't mean to pick on the repubs with this, I am just concerned that they not only have been hijacked by the far right fringe, but that they have been pulled far enough over that they are really no longer viable to the moderate independent voter base...

and if that is true, then the Dems dont need to worry about their base either, and go further left...

Also, if the Republicans have moved off the core values on keys issues...

why hasn't their voter base made it an issue at the conventions if no where else... the candidates seem to send too much of their time trying to pick up support from the super Christian right, or other far right elements... but the moderates don't seem to be heard over top of the screaming...

The same is starting to become true of the dems, although Obama is moving more slowly

The only good thing I can see coming from this is the possibility of a new more centralist party forming to bridge the gap between the far right repubs and the far left dems... but that hasnt happened yet...

Jong,

I just reread your post again and the last line

" I really don't know if labels mean anything any more. In many ways, the overwhelming majority of us have turned into Independents. Only the most extreme left or right of center folks support their party's positions and actions 100%. For me personally, it usually comes down to deciding to defend the "indefensible" or not...usually not. "

Really seems to hit the buttons in questions of foreign policy...

Both partys seem to want to go to exactly the same place, they may take slightly different tacks to get there but they go straight there anyway...

Is it the advisors all seem to come from the CFR ?

or the lobbys pushing for war ( Haliburton, arms manufacturing, etc ) that strong on both sides of the aisle ?

crazy to think despite all the election talk and posturing... you get exactly the same thing in the end... and it winds up being something the majority didn't want

sigh

have they started that third party up yet ?

One thing I have noticed over the past year or so is that just about EVERYONE seems to want an alternative party.

I propose a middle party. We'll call it The American Party. Our symbol will be the Eagle - fuck a bunch of donkeys and elephants, we're American Eagles, bitches!

Among other things, I'm sure. But that's probably the big one for most of us.

Yeah...thats what we said. Completely fabricated and baseless hate.

For example...Halliburton. They were in a specialized industry. Only a couple companies were in that industry. One was American, another French, another Russian, and one Chinese...of those only the French company could have competed with Halliburton for the contract (the others were in no position to make the commitment or provided the services on the scale needed although the Chinese have since become involved through a seperate agreement with the Iraqi govt, but in 2003, they were not really an option). Somehow I don't have a problem giving the contract to the American company over the cheese-eating surrender monkeys.

Yes, that was based on completely fabricated and baseless hate, too. Hate of Saddam, by Bush and Cheney. Fabricated and baseless "intelligence" and accusations gave free rein to that hate.

See? "Hero" is right - it IS all about fabricated and baselss hate. He's just dead wrong about which direction it's coming from. But he works for the government, which his own party says can't do anything right. To quote his own "hero", Ronald Reagan,

Quote:

The best minds are not in government. If any were, business would hire them away.

As Reagan pointed out, "Hero" here is definitely not among the best minds...

(Of course, those who look up to Reagan for saying such things tend to utterly disregard the fact that he spent a great deal of his life IN GOVERNMENT, clearly proving that he was NOT one of the great minds!)

WhoEverYouAre: I think the bull would be a better symbol too and have no idea how they came up with the elephant (does anyone know?), but I'm sure the bull (which would work, as in bull market) wouldn't be considered; too easy to jump to bullshit. That is the last time I will address you, you are now noise on the wind to me; if you're serious, come in as a real person and deal with us--otherwise, go screw yourself.

Problem with using a turkey as a mascot is, it has a negative connotation in this day and age. When something's a dud, it's called a "turkey". Not really the message you're going for.

Ignore FakeRappy as if he were the real thing. That's my new take on it. :)

Yeah, I know about the turkey; works the same for the Republicans choosing something other than an elephant--which still mystifies me!

And yeah, I fully intend to consign him to the "wind" factor; doesn't matter which one it is, just offends me a bit more that someone would so carefully fake everything about another's posting style. No matter; neither one is worth my time or notice.
